Three songs - Week 1
  Artanis[Xp], Jun 08 2008

Mkay, with all these regular vids being posted, I figured why not join in. However, since I'm too lazy to post it daily, I figured that a weekly edition might work better.

The songs that I will be posting will generally fit in either the Hardcore Punk or Metal (Heavy/Progressive/Power/Thrash) genre.

The songs are not relevant to being my top three songs of the week or something like that, simply three vids I expect the target audience to enjoy. I'll also put the lyrics of the song under it in a spoiler.

1. Dead Kennedys - MTV Get off the Air (Hardcore Punk)

+ Show Spoiler +

2. Municipal Waste - Unleash the Bastards (Crossover Thrash Metal/Hardcore Punk)

+ Show Spoiler +

3. Testament - Electric Crown (Heavy Metal)

+ Show Spoiler +

No clue if I'll keep doing this, but I hope so!

What is your favorite color? - Sketch from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The wings are not on fire! - A great sketch from John Cleese's How to irritate people.

You got something better to do then? OFF YOU GO! - Sketch from the meaning of life.

In a moment, he will think of the funniest joke in the world. As a result, he will die laughing. - Sketch from Monty Python's flying circus.

I'll bite you! - The black knight, a great and wellknown sketch from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Enjoy, and post some more here if you wish.

Lyrics game (Thrash Metal)
  Artanis[Xp], May 21 2008

Was a bit bored so I decided to make a small lyrics game.
Rules:
1. You're not allowed to google the lyrics.
2. Put all your answers in spoilers.
3. The questions are all about thrash metal bands.

EXAMPLE: Master, master, Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream.
Answer: Metallica - Master of Puppets

Seems simple enough to me.
Easy
1. Suspended State of cryogenics
Selective amnesia's the story

2. Society failed to tolerate me
and I have failed to tolerate society

3. Talking to you is like clapping with one hand
4. Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die

5. Murder In The Front Row
Crowd Begins To Bang

Hard
1. We arrive, and are blinded
by twisted rubble, and piercing light

2. They use fear like the press
In the book of deceit

3. Conceptualize, wrong or right
The ending of life
God save me now

4. it'll be too late when they finally see the light.
5. The bio-sphere, the place we live
It seems like we don't give a damn

I wish you all good luck, and I'm counting on you people not cheating.

4 albums for getting into Metal
  Artanis[Xp], May 11 2008

In the mood to write a blog.

This is a music-oriented guide for those that are interested in the metal genre but don't really know where to start, or the lost souls that are currently listening to numetal/metalcore. These are the 5 albums I would most recommend to anyone starting out with Metal.

4. Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes
Genre: Power/Heavy Metal with Thrash influences.
Description: Iced Earth is a band that is quite known within the Metal genre, with high critical acclaim. This is their most accessible record, with ballads such as Melancholy (Holy Martyr), Watching Over me, and Blessed Are You, but still packs quite a punch with Disciples of the Lie, My Own Savior and the Something Wicked trilogy. I would highly recommend this album.

3. Judas Priest - Painkiller
Genre: Heavy Metal/Speed Metal
Description: This album is probably considered their best album. The album starts off with the title track, which is an amazing speed metal track and an epic solo, though not the most accessible song. After that, the album slows down a bit but still has great moments such as Night Crawler and A touch of Evil, both are recommended tracks.

2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Genre: Heavy Metal
Description: Black Sabbath's most famous album, and the first real heavy metal album ever. This album single-handidly started the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (in which bands such as Iron Maiden got popular). The entire album is killer and you basically can't go wrong here. It's very accessible for someone who hasn't listened to Metal before, and a definite recommendation.

Just kidding.

1. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Genre: Heavy Metal
Description: The breakthrough album for Iron Maiden. This album contains the best song ever made in the world of heavy metal; Hallowed be thy Name. It is seen as Maiden's best performance to date. Other notable songs on this album include the title track, 22 arcacia avenue, and Run to the Hills. It's a shame some of the song on here aren't that good (Solar Eclipse in particular), but the rest of the album is just too good to pass up.

Close, but no cigar:
Metallica - Master of Puppets: I view this album as too overrated to be here, and the emphasis in this blog was on Heavy Metal. This is still a recommended album though.
Testament - The Ritual: Many thrash-fans don't like this album too much, but I think it's quite underrated. I don't think it's worth putting it with these 4, though.
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction: If any Megadeth album were to be placed in here, it'd have to be CtE since it's their best album after Rust in Peace, which I would deem too aggressive for starting listeners. It might've been worth an extra, 5th spot, but meh.

Now I'm sure a lot of metalheads will disagree with me. Note that this was written for those with completely no experience with the genre, though.

AND VIOLATE!

Went to a concert today. Tilburg was the stage, Turisas, Annihilator and Iced Earth were the bands. Starting time: 8PM.

Left my house at 6:20PM to catch the train at 6:30 which would get me in tilburg 45 minutes before the start of the concert. At the arrival in the 013 (stage name), I found out that the starting time was not 8PM but a bit earlier instead, as Turisas had already started.

Turisas is a folk metal band, and can be compared to Korpiklaani and Finntroll and the like. They put on a good show in old fashioned Viking clothing. I only got to see about half an hour of them, but they exceeded above my expectation, mostly with songs about beer.

Next band in the list was Annihilator (Thrash metal band). I didn't expect too much from them as I didn't really like their stuff on the albums much. However, live they were fucking amazing. Definitely rose above my expectations and they were probably the highlight of the evening for me, especially the song "Phantasmagoria" (huge mosh pit ftw) which is a true thrasher.

-Interlude- Some annoying guy kept fiddling with my hair despite me not knowing them, so I had to move places. I still don't understand his reasoning, probably to impress the girls he went to the concert with.

Last was the main liner; Iced Earth. I had high expectations for this band and the song Violate was the sole reason for me visiting Tilburg. To me, they dissapointed with their new singer, Tim Owens. This guy was brought in Judas Priest from a coverband a number of years back, and joined Iced Earth in 2003. To me, he sounded more like Symphony X's singer, which fits with Symphony X. Not with Iced Earth.

Violate fortunately is a song mostly dominated by the instruments, and it was still awesome. Stormrider was another highlight of the evening, with Jon Schaffer doing the singing instead of Tim Owens, and I would much prefer if he became the main singer for the band. All in all, they still put in a solid performance.

As I went home, I found out the train was 15 minutes late, which was a problem as I had to switch trains on the way home. Luckily, I still made it. Almost got involved in a brawl between a metaler and some guys that came back from going out, but luckily nothing happened.

Sorry, no pictures yet. Might find some later, so keep checking!
