Saturday, 23 August 2008. LR's move-in day at the University of California.
3:30 AM: Sleep.
9:00 AM: Wake up. Shower. Finish packing. Prepare to leave. Get call saying there are long lines and I should come later.
11:00 AM: Finally leave house. Arrive 40 minutes later.
12:30 PM: Finish unpacking. Lunch with parents; they leave.
1:30 PM: Hang out with random people. Go back to room with roommate around 5:00.
5:00 PM: Return to room. Organize everything meticulously.
5:30 PM: Friend calls about dinner.
5:40 PM: Roommate, friend, and I leave for Crossroads. We meet some of my HS friends and their families there. Return at 6:30.
6:35 PM: Return to room. LAPTOP IS MISSING. I look everywhere for it, but my beautiful VAIO and its power cord are both gone. My roommate's Macbook Pro is still on his desk. Clearly VAIOs are cooler.
I go downstairs to alert the RA on duty. I then call the police. The police tell me to stay where I am. My third roommate is afraid I'd suspect him and tells me to rifle through all his stuff. I think he worries too much and just wait for the police. Then they call me and tell me to meet an officer outside Cunningham. I do so.
6:45 PM: We traipse off with two RAs [mine and the one on duty] to go meet Officer Koh. He's waiting with another girl. She had her laptop stolen as well. I'm surprisingly calm, but it's probably due to the sheer shock of it all.
6:55 PM: Officer Koh gets a call on the radio that they've arrested three men - one of them has two laptops, a nondescript black one and a silver Sony VAIO. +10 points for the good guys.
7:10 PM: My laptop and I are reunited. They had me verify that it was indeed my laptop; then they took my personal information and had me sign some forms and released me.
7:15 PM: I return in triumph to Davidson Hall. I am now known as 'that kid who got his laptop stolen on the first day'. I am now an advertisement for Sony and for the UCPD.
Amusing appendices-
1) The other girl was in the room right next door when her laptop was taken; she walked back and saw two strange men walking off with her computer. That's how the police got the descriptions of the perps.
2) She's actually an RA; she was talking next door about the importance of security and protection of personal property.
3) All of her money and credit cards and electronics were on her desk. Only her laptop was taken.
4) They actually were about to release the perps because they had no concrete evidence. Then they found an illegal weapon on one of them. 10 15 saved my life.
Now there are police on every street and around every corner. Hyuk.

Yeah, so after a long spell of thought/visiting/discussing and all sorts of sundry... whatever the fuck people do in order to make decisions, I've chosen to attend UC Berkeley for the next period of my academic career.
I'll be enrolled in the College of Letters and Science; hopefully I'll be admitted to Haas for the Business Administration major. Otherwise I'll be doing Economics.
For housing I applied to:
1) Bowles Hall 2) Unit 1 minisuite 3) Unit 2 minisuite 4) Unit 3 triple 5) anything else
I'm wondering as to who else is/will be attending Cal. Any and all advice/comments/questions/whatever you want to talk about is welcomed.
I know Evanthebouncy is currently a freshman there, but I'm not too sure on any other people.
+ Show Spoiler [Why Cal instead of LA] + Initially I was dead set against Cal. At the time of my application it was my last choice. Then I got rejected from 8/10 schools I applied to, and was left with LA and Cal.
With the applications and admissions proper being largely fait accompli, and unwilling to appeal any decisions, I was fairly sure I'd be attending UCLA. However, my parents' insistence on Cal [since Berkeley is one of the ~5 schools Asian parents are aware of] persuaded me to visit and research both before choosing.
I find the Cal campus to be unpleasant to the eye with its hodgepodge of discontinuous architecture. Furthermore, the city of Berkeley itself is seedy at best: apart from the BART station and perhaps the Telegraph/Durant area, there is little to no reason to venture out past the University confines.
UCLA on the other hand is beautiful and relatively clean. It also has a closer-knit community feel due to the proximity of the residence halls, apartments, and Greek houses to one another. Westwood is both safer and more interesting than Berkeley, and I prefer Los Angeles over San Francisco as a city.
Yet after all was said and done, despite my moderate/conservative beliefs and strong adherence to aesthetic values, I chose Cal. As for why:
1) Academic prestige. Sure, people say that amongst the top 25, education doesn't differ much, and I believe it. A UCLA education won't be far inferior to even a Harvard education in terms of raw learning. The contacts/professors/name value of Berkeley is still greater, though, and beneficial in the long term.
2) Better [actually existent] business programme. Haas' undergraduate Business major is third in the nation; Anderson does not have one. Considering I am planning a career in Investment Banking [mergers/acquisitions, probably? not too sure on that part] it was a great incentive to choose Berkeley.
3) Branching out more. This argument may sound somewhat sophomoric, with all the nonsensical talk about 'diversity' and 'learning to accept others', but I do think a change of locale would benefit me. UCLA, despite being in Los Angeles, is still isolated from the dreary aspects of urban life. Though I once lived in comparative poverty, it was so long ago that I've forgotten all about hardship. It may make me a better person and open my eyes to common adversity.
4) The fact that I don't like the campus/area will help me concentrate on studying. UCLA would be too much fun and games, and I'm afraid I'd get sidetracked. With the Cal campus being more spread out, I can choose to go party or to visit SF when I want, but it's quieter when necessary.
5) Family pressures. Being raised with traditional Chinese values in mind, filial piety and loyalty to my elders is quite important. Since they're all supporting Cal, this was a large factor in my decision.
6) Convenient location. I can get home in an hour. Yes, it's a bit close, but not too close. The benefits of this are considerable, considering increasing gasoline/airfare prices. I also prefer Norcal weather over Socal weather.
I'm sure I'd have more fun at UCLA, and it may result in a slightly more enjoyable college experience. However, after I become accustomed to it, Cal should not be far inferior in either of those regards, and the other benefits entailed above outweighed my initial desire to become a Bruin.

While I'm writing news entry, I figure I'll field some questions here. So fire away, I'll answer as honestly as I can with the information I have.
I am, naturally, not an employee of Blizzard Entertainment - even if I were, the game and all aspects of it are subject to change. Basically, what I say is going to be based on what I saw today, and not much else.
I'll do what I can though. Go!

Gimmicky. It is expensive [150 minerals, need spawning] for its ability [160 hp, 2x8 damage] and is really only good for building defenses. It's my least favorite addition to the game, and I found myself rarely using it. I'd rather have six lings [unless larvae count is low, or I really, really need to build static D.]

I don't see it killing SCBW. I see it being more successful than War3, but as it is, it probably won't replace SC1 entirely. I do think it's headed in a better direction than most expect, though.
On March 12 2008 14:25 EmeraldSparks wrote: How hard is it to get sizable army into enemy base via tricky methods?
Nydus worm is good for mass transport, if unscouted. It moves while burrowed, though, and detection is rarer in SC1 - so it's not too hard to use. Phase prism + warp gates = too expensive to be efficient. Same with dship, IMO.

Also curious when exactly they become available. Late game I'm guessing?
Hatchery tech. Needs lots of gas to make, though - like 50 for 1. It does 40 damage in a small splash radius [I'm talking TINY, I blew one up in SoG's min line and it killed TWO drones] 60 hp. They're basically expensive, low damage, low splash, intelligent scarabs.

How are the drops? Can you do neat tricks with them? An example like tank "shotgunning in a dropship" or like dropping a lurker in and out avoid getting hit by a photon cannon.
Harass any good? Do they appear to be quite slow and expensive? (phase prism vs speed shuttle etc.) Thanks.
They're a bit more sluggish but that's b/c we were playing on faster speed and not fastest. Fastest not available yet. Control is similar on most units, though. Mutalisks can no longer move and shoot, but melee units handle similarly. Ranged units can still be danced like dragoons.
Usual drop tricks are fairly viable. I don't understand the lurker question? Why would you be dodging cannon bolts with unburrowed lurkre? And it's harder with Z since you have nydus canal.. it's not overlord.
Phase prism has speed up like speed shuttle. It's ok, I guess. Storm drops 'work' but you need 4/5 storms to cover a min line b/c storm radius is wimpy.

Do Zerg still have scourge? Will Flash beat Stork in the OSL finals? I have to sleep soon, but Ill be back with more questions in the morning.
Yes, I played all races. It feels like an alpha game. Sounds are still not worked out, even some unit portraits are the SC1 portraits just put in to have some placeholder. No single player yet.
MBS is too easy to macro. Muta stack must be done ghetto way [right click on unit/mineral to stack] and cannot move while shoot. They're trying to fix that though.
Zerg uses nydus canal worm thing. Lair tech. That building also gives you Hive upgrade ability. [replaces queen nest]. Nine. Yes. Can make CC an observation sweepy thingy.
Hardware unknown. A little bit WC3-y, but more polygon count. No. No. No. Unknown. Yes, can see cloak shimmer. It doesn't really affect it one way or the other. Maybe it makes cheese easier a little. No. Yes.

How are carriers, will Stork still be able to use them like he used to? Will Flash still rape without goliaths?
Yes, even more maybe - building placement is a little more artsy [but buildings are clunky] so he'll be able to make nice bases. Cannons are stronger [125shield 125 hp] and they warp. Plus, things like the nullifier allow for some early gimmicks. We didn't really get to use them much, though. There were a LOT of things we didn't get to fully explore, to be honest.
Charge is even better than speedlots, comparatively. Jackals do splash, but less damage than vuls. Also no mines taking out half your zlots before they reach the enemy [although also no mine bombs anymore..] Immortal/Lot rapes mech. One of the games I almost lost vs Raistlin involved immortal/lot/DT breaking my tank/jackal line.
Lair tech Jaedong will be insane because lair tech Jaedong will have lair tech Dark Swarm. I told Dustin about that, and some other Zerg overpowered-ness. Probably will be nerfed; dark swarm may even be removed.
The phoenix is a weaker Corsair. Somewhat more HP, similar top speed, crappy acceleration, no splash [unless overload] But that being said, detection isn't free anymore - so phoenix/DT is at least as viable as sair/DT
Maybe. He was really raving about it according to the Blizz guys.
Carriers operate essentially the same way. We played on relatively small maps, so carriers didn't see much time.
Terran vs Protoss lategame is really a fuck without golis. Thors shoot air, I think? But it's a bit stupid to be using thors antiair. Vikings work, but that involves starports and factories. It's a different game. Infantry still dies to storm [even though storm is weak]

Roach rush for Zerg. Works against all races. Baneling rush is not as good. Mutaling still works. Lurkerling is ok, too.
Protoss had a lot of gatefirst strategies since the maps we used were iffy for FE [two entrances]; some2gate zealots into stalkers and then DTs.
Terrans had walls into infantry or walls into mech. 1fac CC still works, as far as I can tell.
We didn't really get to play enough to find out 'oh, this unit combo is best', and also since our opponents were not really similar level it didn't MATTER what units we had midgame. We just had so many MORE that it was irrelevant. Like at one point I had about 180 supply of hydras vs. a couple dozen marines and two tanks and I was just like .shrug. w/e.
Yes, it's fairly violent and brutal and quick. Even at faster speed. I'd rather have played on fastest, though; it did seem slightly slower than SC1.

On March 12 2008 23:34 zdd wrote: how is the unit reaction time? many modern 3d games have horrible unit reaction times, which makes the units a pain to micro
Fast. Originally they were toying with slow reaction tmies on things like the Thor, but they removed that since Thor was sucking against small units. One zealot could beat a Thor, for instance. So they took out slow reactions.
It seems a little slwoer than SC1 but, again, might jsut be b/c of faster speed setting instead of fastest.

No, it's like a weaker sair. Bad acceleration, no splash, similar cost/hp. Does not hit ground anymore.

9. Nydus worm ignores every terrain.

11. Zerg hatchery has two rally points for drone and combat unit.

It felt beastly. Quite powerful looking/sounding. It does indeed cost more, and does do more damage/have more HP.
I used metal in TvP; it seems 'feasible' but it is weak vs zlot/immortal. I nearly lost one game to a DT/Zlot/Immortal break against my jackal/tank line; fortunately I can macro like iloveoov in SC2 so it was no problem.

I don't know about the chance to miss. I do know that, in one game, when sog's cannons were firing on my hydras from high ground, I was able to have vision of them.

Since you said that they recognize that the game needs to be tested by higher skilled players, did they say when they're planning on getting that testing? It came up when you were answering about MBS/macro issues, but it seems to me that pretty much everything they're doing would significantly benefit from higher skilled players doing the testing. In my opinion, they'd really benefit from some dedicated RTS players playing their weekly builds for 60 hours a week every week to really get at the heart of balance issues. I just can't imagine that the testing they're currently doing is truly productive. They're probably just skimming the surface and making adjustments based on that. I'd hate to see some fan-favorite units or abilities get scrapped because of limited testing indicating that they're imbalanced. If you can provide any info you might have picked up on any of this from them, I'd be glad to hear it!
I asked them about pro feedback, and whether or not they plan on hiring a group of pros to augment their current 2. I do think that having more high-level players working for them would be beneficial, but I'm not running the show so yeah. I recommended for them to hire more korean pros, since I'm sure some of the lower-tier ones would jump for the opportunity. They said that they plan on getting most of pro feedback during beta, and aren't really looking to hire pros en masse during alpha.
So I guess.. wait for beta? It won't be too long in coming.

If you haven't seen YellOw against NaDa, go and watch it. Now~
The prelude to the confrontation was rather gloomy. We few YellOw disciples were beset by the cruel jibes of his antis and summertime fans. In the live report thread, eight or nine people predicted that NaDa would take YellOw on tourism bus.
The game itself was yawn rape. YellOw annihilated NaDa mercilessly with strategies straight out of 2004. Nobody does 2 hatch muta into mass expo guardian rush nowadays - except YellOw. Fell out of style in late '05 anyways, after this kind of crap started happening:

'06 seemed like YellOw's last hurrah - a run in OSL stopped by Neo Emperor Casy. Again denied by a Terran 2-3 in the last stretch of StarLeague. Shinhan 3 was very ugly. His one win was against Shine[Name] - not exactly a proud victory. Despite OnMedia rearranging StarLeague rules for him, he was unable to win against TT of all people and fell out of SL.
He's been in a rather bad funk ever since. Highly depressing for us fans. For me, there were a few months with no Reach and no YellOw in major leagues - painful. Reach is back, but YellOw kept failing in offlines.
Reach/YellOw 2v2 got KTF to first place in SKY Proleague '06 second term. YellOw didn't do well in 1v1s, though. His fans slowly dwindled away, and more and more people turned their back on him and called him muktwi.
Then yesterday's games came. And, to my great delight, he triumphed!
This is by no means his return to dominance. I don't expect him to roll over everyone like he did in Olympus. Yet it's a start - and to see him back in StarLeague would be enough. Here's to 홍진호

So Reach is 2-0 in StarLeague now. Granted, his opponents have hardly been worthy - Iris and BiFrost's TvPs aren't so fearsome. Yet, he is WINNING. Convincingly. In a Manly fashion.
Next is PvZ. He says his PvZ has gotten stronger; however he died in ProLeague T-T. Winless in single PL matches. So, while he's only lost one game through his OnGameNet rampage, he's dropped five or six in ProLeague.
Depressing.

I believe that he will crush Shark, still; his PvZ isn't so atrocious as that. It's not like Shark's ZvP is amazingly powerful. However, if he meets sAviOr next round, I will be worried. I stand by the foolhardy belief that he will win, but their record speaks against it.

I also followed BAD ADVICE of HonestTea and co. and did not Kongdance (T_T I like kongdance).
So my date and I have a fairly long history. It's random, and would need some time to tell. It's not that important though. Suffice it to say that I like her - unfortunately, I didn't really get anywhere, for lack of trying. Totally not like Our Mudang Hero. 100% success rate for Reach.
So it was somewhat uneventful. At least we did not have dolphin attack and require 1a2a3a4a.
However, I think recently I've become too much of a nice gm Asian boy who studies hard for his SATs and tries to maintain good grades. It's boring, and does not fit me.

In accordance, I will push it my own style. Be more carefree, and do not worry so much about what people expect about you. Live life in the moment, and have fun. That goes in part with why I like the MagicN's so much - they seem to want to do things their way, whether it works or not.

I will just have ramblings mostly about the Korea Telecom Freetel MagicN's; new developments, how they're doing, what I think of them, and the like.
Once in awhile I might talk about some other players.
Most entries will be focused on progaming though, with little deviation.
I promise one thing: my blog will have the sexiest photos ^^;
