I'm applying to a few colleges, and I've never felt so wrong to be writing an essay.
The University of Colorado at Boulder's Flagship 2030 strategic plan promotes exceptional teaching, research, scholarship, creative works, and service distinguishing us as a premier university. We strive to foster a diverse and inclusive community for all that engages each member in opportunities for academic excellence, leadership, and a deeper understanding of the world in which we live. Given the statement above, how do you think you could enrich our diverse and inclusive community and what are your hopes for your college experience?
Demographics of CU: 30,196 - Degree-seeking students, a new record 25,408 - Undergraduate enrollment, an all-time high 15.1 percent - Undergraduate minority students, up from 14.9 percent 520 - Number of minority graduate students, the highest ever There are 520 minority graduate students enrolled on the Boulder campus -- which is 29 more than last year and 22 more than the previous high, set in 1995. 17 percent - Decrease in out-of-state freshmen
CU is incredibly easy to get in to for in state freshmen. I cannot stress this enough it is INCREDIBLY EASY to get in. A student with GPA of 3.25 and SAT combined scores of less than 1300 can be guaranteed admission. If you're instate and don't meet these requirements it's just fine because the median GPA and SAT scores of instate graduates who didn't meet the auto-acceptance policy are below those numbers.
I'm going to put it bluntly. CU is a slacker school. Within the last 10 years CU has been rated one of the top 10 party schools. Every single person I know who goes there says their classes are easier than when they attended high school. I fit this demographic wonderfully! I'm a slacker and I love every moment of it! This is the school for me! Now let's return to the essay question.
In a school that houses 4,788 graduate students 520 of them, yes 520, are minorities. The out-of-state enrollments are dropping, and enrollments of minorities are hardly getting better. The essay question for admission is asking how I'm going to bring diversity with my white slacker ass. I feel like I have some to offer, after all I consider myself at least somewhat smart, but are they serious with this question? So many schools ask questions that help you explain what defines you, and that is hard enough to answer, but CU's essay question crosses the line. At multiple instances they label their white middle class university as diverse and inclusive, and I have to explain how I'm going to add to that diversity.
It seems like the essay question is there to paint a picture of CU rather than to get information about myself. Please CU, could you let me explain who I am without having to lie and pretend to be a diverse worldly individual rather than what I am: A middle class white kid who's going to get into your school even if I write, "PISS IN THE ASS," over and over for my essay?
About two years ago I received a pair of these headphones as a gift. I have never owned better headphones. They are, as they advertise, comfortable. The noise-canceling leaves something to be desired; however, I've tested many of these headphones and not a one has better noise canceling than these do. The sound quality is amazing and consistent. The two setting of "High" and "Low" make me never have to worry about cranking the volume of some device that will cause me to jump the next time I turn it on. Seriously, these headphones are amazing.
That being said not once have they acted up until a week ago when the left earpiece suddenly stopped working. Naturally I was quite sad. I had to go back to my old apple earphones for my ipod and computer and well, everything.
I remembered something about a warranty so I decided to call them up. Oh, did I mention that they have toll-free quick service that you hardly have to interact with a machine to get? Also, there's the fact their number is right in the headset case unobtrusively. I was on the phone for about five minutes and next thing I know they are sending me a new set of headphones free of charge, of course I had to send my own back in. Not only that, but since the headphones acted up they are reseting my warranty, so should anything happen to them again I can get another pair.
I've never had such a pain-free encounter with any company, nor such consistently good service. (Until it failed ;p) My point is that if you ever have the need for a bose device absolutely go with their product. I am very impressed with how they work. I wish other companies were more like them. Thank you Bose!
EDIT: I thought I'd add in that these headphones do gobble up AAA batteries like nothing else. I forgot that part. :[
What is LARP? You ever see all those overweight men and women in a park with what appears to be multicolored swords? That's us! We hit each other and call out numbers and look like idiots. You know the best part? It's really, really fun!
IFGS
What do we do there? Well, it really depends. There are a different styles including high roleplay and high fighting and something in between. Roleplaying can be fun for everyone, and yes even you! Sometimes its fun to mirror something in your life, and sometimes it is fun to just be a troll! Roleplaying lets you do all of these things in a hilarious way. Even when roleplaying with people I despise I always find a way to laugh. Now fighting... I have never met a person who doesn't like to fight with the foam swords. It really is awesome... Beyond words.
Amtgard
Personal Experience I started LARPing when I was... Seven? Eight? I'm not quite sure... I went to a camp to do it and I really didn't know what I was in for. Every year kids would talk about how much they couldn't wait for summer to go on vacation to exotic places like... Florida or Ohio or something... All I waited for was one thing: Camp. In fact, when I went on a trip to Hawaii for the first time at the age of nine I remember crying since I was going to miss two weeks of sword camp! That was two magic items!
At the age of 14 with 16" long hair I was an up-and-coming shaggy hippy. That was when I played IFGS for the first time. IFGS is a live action role playing game that people have been playing for almost thirty years. I forgot what it was like to deal with people with absolutely zero social skills. However, I enjoyed it SO much! These people fought HARD. There were none of those rules to protect the young kids who came to camp. When you got hit it hurt... and it felt good! Oh by the way, we were in character playing for two days straight.
Two years later I am hired by the man who has run this camp since I joined up. Age ten I was practically drooling to go to camp. Seven years later I still am, but now I get paid!
Role Models They pretty much got it right
The Unexpected Let's face it... Being a LARPer carries a particular stigma. I don't blame those people for judging it. Many people involved are completely obsessed and cannot function outside of their little worlds. However, there are also LARPers among you... Don't be alarmed. They sit in your starbucks, they go to your classes, and SOME of them don't even stand out! Honestly, start asking people you know... or think you know. You'd be amazed at how many people have at least once done some sort of LARP or have had interest.
SCA
Wanna Play? Throughout this blog I've posted some YouTube videos. These are just some of the more common LARP organizations throughout the US. (There are FAR more in Europe, particularly in the UK.) If you want to play the best thing to do is just do a google search. Many larger organizations likely have a local chapter, and there might just be a smaller group itching for more members. If you can go to a weapons practice first. A lot of these groups will have one. It's free and you'll get an easing in. Then I'd suggest playing as an NPC. (That's a Non-player character.) It isn't as fun as playing, but it will definitely give you a good preview.
This will be forever known as the face of a loser.
If you're viewing this post in the future you may very well not remember a player called Lee Jae Dong. After all his relatively good hot streak ended quickly with a loss to a player you will surly remember....
For those future viewers I'll take you back. The day is August 2nd in South Korea. Lee Jae Dong stretches as he wakes up and thinks one thing, "lol i'm gonna crush that Orion nub lolololol..." Little did he know he was going to face the game that will ruin his career.
Meanwhile, in the CJ house Orion gets supportive advice from Kwanro, sAviOr, and EffOrt. Dreading what he expected.... To lose... However, he needn't worry for Orion was about to emerge victorious... The new zerg Bonjwa!
For those that don't want to click the link VNV Nation is a musical group that produces a variety of club music. They were previously self-defined as "Futurepop," but later said that they regretted labeling themselves as that genre. Most of the music is highly electronic with some piano, lots of drums and drum beats, and a lot of vocals. The vocals are characterized by "epic" themes with a, for the most part, hopeful overtone.
They just released a new album titled "Of Faith, Power and Glory" and I managed to get a ticket to their concert in Denver. Sadly, since I'm dumb I forgot to bring a camera so I could capture the event. Anyway, the name of the album should give you a basic idea of what I mean when I say "epic" themes. No, they aren't religious but they do oftentimes mention religions of all kinds and draw their lyrics from philosophies of many cultures.
All of these things combined create my favorite music. Hands down. Most songs manage to give me chills at at least one point of the song, or even a point in my life when I can really relate to what VNV is singing about. Keep in mind though that many people find the music cheesy and don't like it. With that in mind I'm wondering what other VNV Nation fans there are out there. What about other fans of the non-so-clearly-defined-genre of Futurepop/Darkwave/Synthpop/EBM/Eurogoth lurk Team Liquid? I'm particularly curious because of the variety of people who showed up to the concert. Also, if you've seen them please speak up! Their concert was amazing and apparently most concerts are very personal to the region and I'd love to hear what it was like.
If you're curious about the music I encourage you to check out the album "Empires" It's a favorite of many people. If you'd like something a little more mainstream go with their newest "Of Faith, Power and Glory" Most of their albums are great! I'll link a few things of note below.
I've been trying to setup some keybinds in City of Heroes. It's kinda a mmo tangent I go on sometimes to get my mind off of SC and "hard" games. There are a few keys that are utterly annoying and useless. For example the "-" key will scroll though your trays. Uh... You only ever have about 20 abilities and 3 trays that are always displayed is more than enough.
I'd like this key to serve no purpose at all rather than fucking with me when I mistype. I search the internet for a while on how to unbind keys. That is make a particular key do nothing. I can't find anything after about 30 minutes of searching. I then check the in game help and again I find nothing. Finally I open a petition as a final desperate measure. Here is my contact with the GMs thus far (It reads from bottom up.):
Response (GM Lloyd) 07/07/2009 12:18 PM Hello,
You can reset your keybinds by selecting "Reset Keybinds". It's in Options under Menu, under the Keybind Profile tab. Blue button.
If you have any trouble, please let us know!
Best, GM Lloyd City of Heroes Support Team
Response (GM Chirpysparrow) 07/05/2009 02:48 PM Hi LeperKahn,
Thank you for contacting the City of Heroes Support Team. I am escalating your petition to a Senior Customer Support Representative to further assist you. Please be aware, however, that there may be a delay in reviewing the issue, based on ticket volume at the time your ticket was submitted.
Someone will be in contact with you as soon as possible.

Customer (LeperKahn) 07/05/2009 02:41 PM Hello, Sorry if I wasn't clear but I don't want to change my ketbinds back to the default setup I'd like for certain keys to have no function. For example - selects the previous tray. I would rather have - do nothing at all. Is there a way to accomplish this? Thanks
Thank you for contacting the City of Heroes Support Team. You may need to reset your key binds in the “Options” window. To do this, open the “Options” menu, find and select the tab labeled “Keymapping” and click the “Reset KeyBinds” button. Once this is done click the “Save and Close Window” button on the bottom left of the window. After this you can use the default key binds or go back and set new key binds. We would suggest after saving the new key binds that you run the “/bind_save” and “/bind_load” commands. Once you do this if your key binds default or again seem bugged you may simply run the “/bind_load” command to reset them to your preferences. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us.
Thanks, GM Brandon
Customer (LeperKahn) 07/04/2009 06:21 PM Mac OS X: I want to unbind a few of my keys away from the defult. For the life of me I cannot get them to unbind. I just want a few keys to not do anything. Thanks!
Not only can a regular GM not answer my question, but after escalating it the "upper level GM" can't answer nor read any of the previous exchanges. All of their suggestions do the same thing: Reset the keybinds to the default setup which is useless to me.
Teamliquid I ask this: Does anyone know how to unbind keys in CoH so that particular ones such as "-" do nothing? Nothing being defined as when the button is pressed the game has no resulting action unless I am typing this key as a method of in game text conversation.

How can I get GMs to answer me? Can someone translate my question into the language of incompetent GMs?

Anyone else get this email? I never signed up for anything like this and it didn't show up in a spam folder. (I don't normally even get much spam.)

I'm spending the next 7 days in the state of Hawaii on Kawaii, I've been here before and I've done most of the "touristy" stuff. I'm planning on taking a boat trip to the Na Pali coast, but other than that I don't have any plans. Any locals with suggestions or people who've been here with good ideas?
