This is just a personal rant, I just needed to type it out somewhere.

I just finished reading the live report of Jaedong vs ForGG in the MSL finals. I'm gonna spoiler the entire rest of the blog because it contains results of that and other/older matches recently in starcraft progaming.

Ball hanging left
  Nightmarjoo, Jul 07 2008

Hi TL, this blog probably will suffer from a bad case of TMI, you're forewarned.

I felt that the quality of this post would be way too low to warant even being in the general forum, hence the blog post.

I noticed while looking at myself naked in the mirror that my left testicle hangs noticably lower than my right testicle when the temperate is hot enough to warrant lower hanging balls, as opposed to higher, more condensed balls. I also note, that I am right handed. I was wondering, if there's any correlation there.

So TL, which if either of your testicles hang lower, and which hand is your dominant hand?

Poll: Which ball hangs lower, and what is your dominant hand?
(Vote): My left ball hangs low, and I am right handed.
(Vote): My left ball hangs low, and I am left handed.
(Vote): My left ball hangs low and I am ambidextrious.
(Vote): My right ball hangs low, and I am right handed.
(Vote): My right ball hangs low, and I am left handed.
(Vote): My right ball hangs low, and I am abidextrious.
(Vote): Neither of my balls hangs noticably lower than the other, and I am left handed.
(Vote): Neither of my balls hangs noticably lower than the other, and I am right handed.
(Vote): Neither of my balls hangs noticably lower than the other, and I am ambidextrious.

Absurd Theory on Zerg Economics
  Nightmarjoo, Jul 06 2008

I had posted this in the strategy section, but few people thought it had any merit at all, so I'm posting it here just in case anyone finds it interesting to read.

Ok, this is a theory I came up with while in the shower, so it must be good!

I'm sure you're all aware that when you finish a lair or hive, you gain a larva, right? What about using this to BUY larvae?

Zerg economics is unique and complex in that it's all about larvae management, specifically on whether to make a drone or military unit, but broadly: all your units are made by larvae, and all of your buildings then are made from larvae too. The longer a game goes, the more larvae you have. If you let your larvae go to three, you potentially miss a larvae development cycle, and thus lose a larva. Efficient builds are efficient for zerg when they best use larvae, when to make drones, when to make units, when to expo, when to make a hatch in your base, whether it's better to make a static defense structure and lose a drone or a military unit, etc.

My theory is: A hatchery cost 300 minerals and takes 120 seconds to build, and you lose a drone, so you then have 8 fewer minerals times however many seconds it takes for a drone to bring minerals from a block to your hatchery times the amount of times this could happen over the course of the game. A lair costs 150 minerals and 100 gas, takes 100 seconds to build, and you lose no drone. For half the immediate cost in minerals, along with a third the cost of the hatchery in gas you "buy" a larva. The building also has more hp and allows you to get more tech, keeping it alive longer and if you lose your main lair/hive you have a backup one already at lair-stage, but these are just bonuses, not something the theory strives for. Now, you lose gas by this but gain minerals, and gain a larva which never would have been produced otherwise, on top of still having an extra larva you wouldn't have had if you had made a hatchery (the drone). To put it into the perspective of terran and protoss, it would be like spending 100 minerals and 67 gas to make your factory able to produce two tanks at the same time for one time only, or spending 75 minerals and 50 gas to make one gateway able to produce two dragoons at the same time for one time only. For protoss and terran, this would give you one extra unit, ie you would be buying time, because you'd spend money to gain a unit in the same timeframe. Time, like larvae, is finite, so being able to buy it (or a larva) is allowing you to buy something you normally couldn't get otherwise. It's a bit more complex with zerg though. Imagine if you spend 150 minerals and 100 gas to get a lair with your nat hatch while your main already is a lair. You gain a larva. This larva could be 2 zerglings, or one hydra, which could be one lurker, etc. This means that you've spent money to increase the total possible amount of units you could have at a certain point. More units in the same amount of time, that is by definition, efficient. Imagine though, that you spend that extra larva on a drone instead of another unit. This means, that if you lose a drone to making a hatchery, static defense, or some upgrade or technology building, you have another drone to make up for it. If you need to make a hatchery, by making a lair you gain a drone, so making another hatchery hurts less because you don't lose mining speed, you have the same amount of drones as before you made that hatchery. If you don't have to use that drone immediately, you're now gaining 8 minerals every whatever-amount-of-seconds. After however many cycles of this, you've already not only paid for that missing 150 minerals, but you're gaining minerals. You could even say you're gaining gas, because you could put another drone on gas of a new expo sooner, because you have that extra drone already available for mining, so after a certain amount of time, you've completely paid off the money you spent on that lair to gain a larva, and are now getting more money in the same amount of time, definitively efficient.

In starcraft, all the little things add up over the course of a game. Two more lings makes a big difference over time, even if by itself it seems to make no or little of a difference. It's harder to see as the game goes on longer, and more units are involved, but when you look at low-eco games, you can easily see how the difference of one larva could change the outcome of a game, and these same things work just the same in a longer game, even if it's harder to see. Sometimes you follow a game and you have no idea how one guy won, because he was losing the entire game until he suddenly just wins. Just a matter of who made better decisions and/or was more efficient in the end.

How this could be useful: You're able to use all of your larvae, and are mining at such a rate that the amount of money leftover after using all larvae at all hatcheries is increasing. You feel the need to either make another hatchery or expo, because presumably you won't need a surplus of money in the near future, and want to be able to spend that money. Often, players just go ahead and make another hatchery, often in their base. This accomplishes losing a drone and gaining no minerals, but it gives the player more larvae than they would have by that time. Often I see players add hatches when they don't really need to, or won't be able to support that many hatcheries in the near future. Possibly their money goes high as they're teching, but as soon as they hit hive tech or something they'll have plenty to spend it on, and those extra larvae will just sit and be wasted. If instead of, or possibly to complement getting a new hatchery, players make lairs at all of their current hatcheries, they'd gain larvae to spend their money on without gaining more larvae than they can support. It'll cost money to do so, but if they need to spend money, why not be super-efficient in the process, and give yourself more larvae to spend money on, which according to my theory would pay off in the end anyway?

The theory isn't perfect, and perhaps its application is far less effective than I've made it out to be, but I think it's worth consideration atleast.
I think it probably can be useful in a game, but that you'd still need to learn when to use it and when not to, like all things in sc. Might be awkward to try and teach yourself the correct timing and scenarios when to use it, but imo it'd be worth it once you "mastered" it.

Also you can build hives later, it should still pay off given a long enough game or something.

Poetry (Mine)
  Nightmarjoo, Jul 04 2008

An on-and-off hobby I've taken up during the summer, is writing poetry :O
I've never been a poetic type, so I dunno how I ever got inspiration to try it, but I did so whatever. A muse is a muse :O

So here's all I've done so far. I'll put little personal comments under each one in ittalics.

Elegiac Sonnet for Dave

Dawn doth diverge from dusk as the dust digresses,
All over the land lit dark and bright confesses,
Valiant knight steward of thy tower expresses:

In majesty's hall crashes the kavetching chair
Derelict it is as I am wont of late Mare,
Save my name honour as I mean sorry sincere.

Caught amidst the tempest flung spiraling careless
Out the ferry quite contrary t'my wish boundless,
Turning calm t'eye refuge am I truly heedless.

Take from me what you wish, desire none have I,
Borrowing such martyrdom as epics claim sigh:
Yearning oft only for closure bliss give'th me nigh,

Respectfully all else I must deny for gay
Death alone solitude bring, down this dark doom'd day.

This one was done for/in memory of a suicidal friend. Luckily he ostensibly is no longer suicidal. This was the first poem I ever wrote, and I got inspiration to write it from Through The Looking Glass and What Alice Saw, which I had finished the night I wrote this. I don't care for the "kavetching chair" part, but otherwise I like this poem.

Love Couplets in Iambic Hexameter

I'd like for you to think upon one thing for me,
Loudly for the world to see I wish to decree:

Over all other things in importance I want,
Valiantly to illustrate t'you and even flaunt,

Eager as early bird who knows he'll get the worm,
Yearning like the bar'd student does to join the firm:

On top of the planet I lust to say it's true:
Unparalleled in my mind t'indite: I, love: You.

I didn't like this one much when I wrote it, but I like it more every time I read it, it just turned out really well I think. I didn't have any inspiration or motivation when I wrote this, part of what surprises me that it turned out well anyway. I wrote this not long after the first one, maybe a couple weeks after at most.

Why fog? - Couplets in Iambic Hexameter

The dawn rose veiled by the clouds the battle bequeathed,
And hardly could we see to return weapons sheathed,

Never to see that sun again could friends and foes,
Killed but for what aim 'cept to fog the sun with blows?

A mapper at broodwarmaps.net asked me to write a short poem to put into the description of a map he was going to make, but it ending up not fitting =/ Personally this is my favourite poem I've written. The title is stupid, but I just made one up to have a title.

Iambic Hexameter Quartets for Ryan

Rising above to strike opponents down he comes,
Yearning to clean the field of filth as the beat drums,
And eviscerate foes friends flee with eerie hums
Not quieted by the screams of evil in sums,

Killing all does Ryan my captain O noble
And pure leader he is yes, as the white opal
Itself, yet moves like his dark templar are mobile,
Moving in silence dealing precision able,

Inevitable is His victory always,
Not unlike the gods themselves he explores that maze
Cultivated by the random of life, his gaze
Hath no bounds but the infinity 'yond the haze.

Ever valiant and victorious is that Great,
Universally unchallenged cept to cruel fate,
Never faltering, always advancing, to sate
Gallant thirst for triumph Auir loves, foemen hate.

A friend of mine jokingly asked me to write a poem about his sc prowess, so I did I don't care much for this one, it's awkward.

The Hero Quintet in Iambic Hexameter

Zealous as any hero promised nothing but,
Earns the world and more with valiant deed 'thout strut,
Leans on none the world but hisself alone and what,
Does the world do but lean on him, let him get cut,
And amid all he perseveres, lone like the mut.

It's been too soon since I wrote this, only a week or two at most, for me to judge this one. I don't know if I like it or not.

Rondel of TeamLiquid

Terror stews in enemy's mind,
Egregiously ousting their lives,
As we overwhelm from our hives.

Making foes truly fear our kind,
Loosening mortal coils in fives,
Icy death embraces their blind,

Quagmires of blood all in a wind,
Under our plank do take their dives,
Igniting our triumph through rives,
Deftly Team Liquid dawns Earth-kind.

I thought doing five couplets in iambic hexameter would be boring, so I searched for some structure involving two stanzas of three lines, and one of four, and found the "Rondel". I don't really like it, 8 syllables is hard to work with, and I don't like the rhyme scheme of abb aba abba. I might make another TeamLiquid one with just five couplets in iambic hexameter, I'm just so much more comfortable with that =/ Overall I'm not terribly happy with this one.

Any kind of feedback would be appreciated, things you like or dislike, anything really!

BWMN Forever
  Nightmarjoo, Jun 11 2008

Ok, brace for impact. Some mappers at bwm felt that posting individual maps on tl, while can be helpful to the author, doesn't really help bridge the mapping and gaming community, and sometimes the ensuing flaming actually hurts the relationship between the two. So they had asked about someone creating a blog about the special maps of bwm, to really tell the mapping community which maps we personally feel are good, and why; to show the mapping trends and whatnot. I volunteered to do it, so let me introduce myself. I am Nightmarjoo, gamer of three years (as of january), and on-and-off mapper of three years. I don't make maps often, partially because I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, and partially because I'm lazy, even if that is somewhat contradictory. About two years ago, activity declined in bwm and I volunteered to be an admin on the site to pick up the slack of the inactive admins. I was active and enthusiastic about the site and mapping, so I was made an admin. I've handled many of the newsposts on the site since then, have held a significant role in connecting bwm with the gaming world, including getting maps into iccup. When people come to bwm with an idea, they usually end up approaching me. As a mapper I have a lesser role, I have won only two competitions at bwm ever, first place in the Map of the Month (MOTM) competition, with my map (4)Faoi and (2)Angband 3600 ft. 1.2. My biggest contribution to the site in my opinion, is in my critical and in depth analysis of maps. I put effort into trying to help the newer and weaker mappers as much as possible, because I remember how hard it was to learn just the basics of mapping, and how one person taking the time to point some general basics out helped so much, and how I had wanted people to help me by pointing out specifics in my maps, but there wasn't a person to do that. So I try and be that person. I am a competent but not great gamer, about a C zerg at the moment, and D+ protoss and terran. I play almost 100% standard and by the book, nearly always. I use my gaming experience and mapping experience to try and really picture how a standard player would play on the maps, and think of as many scenarios as I can to best point out the good features and possible flaws in maps.

The following are the newsposts for our MOTM competitions in itallics, and any commentary I have on them in regular print. Most of these are by me, few are not. I may not fully agree with some of what I said in the older posts, because as a gamer I of course improve and evolve daily, and thus my knowledge and understanding of starcraft improves, so my older analysises may be outdated / incorrect. Please note that when I post these, I try and make the maps look and sound as great as possible, and I try to leave out personal bias. The winning maps are selected by popular vote, so it's quite possible that I don't like the winning map, but it's my job to give the best and best sounding analysis I can regardless of the map. Now, I certainly drag my feet in posting the winning map if I feel it needs more work or a crucial edit, but most of the time there isn't any trouble. My point then, is that a lot of my commentary will probably be me critiquing the map whereas my old newspost glorifies the map.

I hope you enjoy this, it's a bit long, but teamliquid is usually pretty supportive in individual map threads, so hopefully it will appeal to you guys. These are some of the best maps broodwarmaps.net has to offer even if there are better maps. The maps are definitely not perfect, and many have only rudimentary testing, but otherwise they're all solid.

If it doesn't say "by someone", it's by me.

Over time the quality of the maps has improved a lot, and we've gotten so many new and absolutely excellent mappers, that the map winning second place usually is right behind first place in votes, and very close in quality. The second and third place maps recieve more attention in the later MOTMs.

Spelling and grammar was completely unmodified from the original post.
