Hell ya I'm excited. I just got a refurbished Creative "Zen" player for half off the MSRP -- about $100. I used to have an iPOD mini and a FM transmitter, but some punk kid in my neighourhood stole it from my car. Anyway, I've been mp3 less for a few weeks and with a 40 minute commute to work everyday, I couldn't take it anymore =).

Anyway, iPODs suck. No seriously, if some other company came out with a mp3 player with the feature set the iPOD has it wouldn't get very far. (doesn't include the new "Touch", of course, that shit is sexyyy) What the iPod has going for it is very reliable software, it's fashionable, and a sleek interface. In my mind though, these reasons don't redeem the ipod.

Software: I prefer winamp over itunes anyday. It's more extensible, has more features, and the new version is completely compatible with not just the iPod, but any kind of portable music player. I don't think it's out for Mac, but who cares about Mac users?

Fashionability: The ipod looks very nice, ya, but so do a lot of other players. But really, looks and popularity isn't something you should be judging a $200 purchase on :\.

Interface: The click wheel is overrated. It's super sensitive and not very accurate. When I'm trying to choose between four or five songs, I'd much rather be able to press a button to go up and down. What the wheel is great for is being able to scroll down long lists very rapidly, but that's something the folks at creative have overcome by letting you scroll by first letter of the alphabet using a directional pad. That gives you speed and accuracy.

What really hurts the iPod though is its lack of features. It's 2008, and the nano/classic models still doesn't have radio or voice recording, which is standard with all its competitors. It also only accepts proprietary formats for video... increasing the chances you'll have to spend half an hour trying to convert the video to the correct format.

I'm not saying the iPod isn't a great product. I'm saying there are better options out there, that are about three quarters the price. For those of you looking for a fully featured flash based 4-32 GB model, I recommend the Creative Zen. It's got everything the iPod has (like literally. there isn't a single feature the ipod has that the zen doesn't, except maybe solitaire), and a user interface that's just as easy to use, if not as sexy looking. PLUS, it's got radio, voice recording, and a (poorly implemented) SD card extension. All that, and it costs $20 less at the 8 gig level.

ya, that was long, but i spent 4 hours today comparing different players, and damned if I wasn't going to share with someone.

Dear Subordinate, because that's what you are now, because I got promoted and you didn't, I have some things to say.

1. Learn to take responsibility for your mistakes.

Everybody makes errors. I don't give a shit if you screw up. I give a shit if when I call you out on it, you go ballistic and defend yourself. I give a shit if I have to tell you not to make the same mistake twice, three times, four times. I give a shit when you shift the blame to me, and in the most obnoxious way -- "You know I'm not responsible! You should've never given me the job!" WELL I KNOW THAT NOW YOU DUMB BITCH.

2. Stop trying to take advantage.

Our friendship ended when you decided to say in front of every other intern "who the fuck does he think he is." Who I think I am is your supervisor, and the guy who has covered for the fact that you come in 2 hours late every day for the last 6 weeks. That's who the fuck I am.

2. Respect is assumed until proven otherwise.

"Respect is earned, not granted" is the most ridiculous shit I've ever heard. How narcissitic do you have to be to think everyone in the world should work to earn your respect? How about having the common fucking courtesy to treat everyone you meet with respect, and consideration? Is it neccessary to put somebody down every time you open your mouth?

3. You are who you are. But my opinion bloody matters, and you damn well better listen.

Feeling good about yourself is not the only thing that counts. If I have to make you cry to get you to understand that I'm in charge, that's what I'll fucking do. It's good you're an individual, but if being rude, disrespectful, and obnoxious is part of your individuality, then fuck you we have a problem.

I'm sorry you don't have any friends, that your entire life is devoted to this job which you don't get paid a cent for, and that you have $350 in parking tickets and live on a revolving pool of credit card debt.

I am not your outlet for your personal problems. You don't get to snap at me and tell me to get out every time I come and ask you something. You especially don't get to YELL at me for inadvertently damaging your status in the office politics that's going on, that I want no part of (mainly because three weeks from now, I'll have nothing to do ever again with this office), and that I know nothing about. Instead, you could take responsibility for yourself, declare bankruptcy, and get a paying job, which your masters from whatever Ivy League you went to should land you easily.

holy shit i feel better.

hahaha, I feel so cocky right now, and for the stupidest reason. My friend and I got a ticket the same month a while back, and we both had to do traffic school. My friend believed the court clerk when he said that online traffic school takes longer, so he signed up for an 8 hour course. Myself, I waited 5 days before the deadline, and completed an online course in about 1 hour by saving all the instructional pages and using Scrapbook to search for the answers. Ended up with a perfect score on the final, and it actually cost me less.

Hahaha, I know I'm totally bragging about the stupidest thing, but it feels good to fight the man ya know?

i cant motivate myself to do anythign lately. i mean i goto work and work on projects there, and kinda crunch my way through stuff at school, but i'm not doing anythign because I *want* to. things that used to move me greatly now just bore me. im not depressed or anything... im just bored with life

does everybody go through this in college? did you get over it? it's making me anxious if the rest of my life im going to care this little.

I finally caught up with the latest season of BSG. a brief review, CHOCK FULL OF SPOILERS. Since it's the whole post, I won't spoiler it, but seriously, if you haven't seen it, stop reading.







the last season of bsg sucked. i mean, really, it was bad. it was bad like the new mike myers movie was bad, except briefly during the last episode, and then it was kinda cool for a while. but mostly it was just bad.

Ok, I'm exaggerating a little bit. I guess I'm just disappointed. My problem is with all the deus ex machina. Sure, it's easy to come up with crazy plot twists when they don't have to follow any known law of human behavior or logical sense, and you don't care how many plot holes you leave in the process. examples: Why won't Deanna tell us who the last Cylon is? Why isn't the chief's daughter special, isn't she a hybrid too (ten bucks this will be explained away awkwardly next half-season in one or two lines of dialogue)? For god's sake, the main plot line is driven ENTIRELY by divine intervention. Doesn't that strike any of the BSG writers as a bad idea?

(also that next to last sentence was ironic)

And the awkward weird mystical-religious-inspirational speeches. They are really badly written and really uncomfortable. Especially that part where everybody starts cheering after Baltar's sermon? That was so weird. I mean really, he's practically the Osama Bin Laden of the entire human race for a while and now he's got a popular radio show? I'm not going to swallow that in a million years.

I'm beginning to think what makes Olmos' performance so amazing is because his character (Adama) has so tight lipped. He actually gets to act, and not vomit words at the audience.

Sorry if you loved this season. I'm not bashing the show... seriously, i love the shit out of BSG. I used to think it was the greatest shwo on earth, but no longer. Anyway, I'm open to hearing other perspectives on this. There were definitely some awesome parts this season, like the Cylon civil war, and the last two episodes. But otherwise, it was really meh.

oh, and im also aware there was a thread in general about this. didn't feel like bumping it though.

in a fucking parking garage. Who the hell ever heard of a parking garage closing at 7pm? And refusing to let your car out? And this was in the middle of fucking oakland. I ended up having to take the BART and get a ride home. Tomorrow I have to take the BART back to oakland and pick up my fucking car, and pay $20.00 overnight parking. WTF kind of rip off is this? I mean is this typical in city parking lots? God I'm so fucking pissed off. It slowed my getting home by about two hours, so now I have even less time to write this 6 page paper on fredrick fucking nietzsche, FUCK.

Lately I've really been interested in photography. I think it started with that blog post I made about the woman who took pictures of her daughter growing up, and that really moved me. I've also been motivated by some of the really great photographers at TL =). You know who I'm talking about. Anyway, this is a link to a blog about a guy who took a Polaroid every day of his life until, well, you can guess.

So ... I want to take on a similar project. Well, in general I'd like to start taking high quality pictures. It would also be a useful skill for the career I have planned in journalism. Does anyone have some ideas how to get started? I'm artistically retarded really... I don't know anything about color or composition or whatever. I've always cared more about language. I'd like to know what a good camera to start out with is. I have a pretty good (but old) film camera... is it worth it to spend the money on film? Or should I get a digital camera? If the latter, what would you recommend?
