Leo Lewis in Tokyo - For most universities around the world illegal meteor-mining, politically explosive space colonies and wars waged between teenagers in robot battle suits are treated as the stuff of pure fantasy.
For Japan, they are the stuff of high academia.
In an attempt to inject “the most inventive possible thinking” into Japan, representatives of many of its most august universities are to become a “virtual faculty” of the Gundam Academy — the first academic institution based on a cartoon.
Next year dozens of engineers, astrophysicists, doctors, anthropologists, linguists — even town planners — will begin discussing how to convert the science-fiction series Gundam, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, 66, into reality.
The agenda will be broad: the Gundam comic series has been running since the late 1970s and its storylines have constructed one of the most complete and complex future-scapes in science fiction.
Central to Gundam are the huge, occasionally dysfunctional, battle suits used by the characters to settle squabbles that arise as humanity fights over resources and power. The robotic engineering, the low-gravity control mechanisms and the life-support systems will all be subjects at the Gundam Academy.
One aeronautics expert involved in the project said that, as a serious scientist, he can see clearly which parts of Gundam are technically feasible and which are not.
Nuclear-powered thermal rockets and spherical helper robots should be pursued, he said.
At a recent symposium held by the founders of the academy and academics, there were lively discussions about emulating the protective coating which prevents the fictional battle suits burning-up on atmospheric re-entry, and the airbags that protect the pilot from the violent lurches of battle.
The underlying storyline in the Gundam series is one of political strife, endless war and the challenges that arise when mankind begins to move away from Earth.
Shinya Hashizume, a professor of urban planning and architecture at Osaka Prefectural University, said: “Gundam presents the reader with many challenges that we will encounter. It is vital to begin conducting research into these. Scientific research in Japan desperately needs a flow of new ideas.”
If they are successful, the founders of the project told The Times, institutions and companies across Japan could embark on new fields of research: everything from the perfection of a universal translation device to moon settlements and the construction of a mega-particle cannon.
Shinichi Nakasuka, a professor of astronautics at the University of Tokyo and one of the founders of the academy, said: “Studying fiction is an excellent way to get ideas about the future. Scientists often restrict their way of thinking to what they factually know. The comic shows how ordinary people without much deep scientific knowledge can come up with very good ideas.”
JAPAN. Seems as though many different kinds of scientists, companies and stuff will start trying to bring some of the Gundam universe technology into reality. So TL, would like some Haros or a a universal language translator... or something else?

I wrote this thing randomly about some new upcoming games that could help e-sport exposure and take it to newer heights. There are no real facts but it could realistically happen I think.
I'm going to answer this question with a very firm yes. Of course people will ask me for a reason. “Saya, why? It'll just be your opinion right?” Well of course, most speculation is an opinion of some sort. But I feel that in the coming years e-sports will make a HUGE jump to the next level. Higher than the biggest games currently are. The reason I say this is because two things are happening right now in e-sports. People are starting to catch on (That's to say sponsors and organizers) more and more that e-sports is becoming bigger. The current generation is lending itself to that also, I believe. Another thing is that there are games coming out in the future that may help boost e-sports higher in an international sense.
First and foremost, the number one candidate that will cause e-sport to erupt is Starcraft 2. It may very well become the next staple competitive RTS for a relatively long time. I envision that there will be many tournaments, and many people all over the world already know about the longevity of BW and what it takes to play that game. So many people will try it. And many new people will try it too, like the younger kids that weren't around much for BW. It will help everyone. It will become international. Say, like the WC3 scene. (Also please note that I'm talking about e-sports as a whole. I may not like some games but that's not what I'm going for here.) We'll have tournaments with different appeal. Different ages, races, countries, backgrounds, stories. Will the WC3 players make it higher? Will the BW players make higher? Or would a random kid thats like sixteen years old with a fresh mind for the game to mold make it? It should break many barriers. I also believe that in it's gaming infancy the tournaments will pick it up rather quickly and we will see exciting things come from that.
The next thing I want to touch on, is the evolution of the fighting game world. Starting very recently, fighting games are now moving on to the online world of gaming. It can't be only going to your local arcade anymore. With the release of multiple games, such as Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur 4, Tekken 6, and the various other games that are going to be available to play online. It used to be that the best players had a good community around their area with good people to play with, so that they get better. The other people who were not so lucky had to figure things out on their own and travel to get actual experience.
The online idea is to breakdown this barrier a bit. If it can connect more people together, more people can learn from each other, play versus other regions/countries/what have you. There will be online tournaments, offline tournaments, things with prelims, stuff like that. The net kids will show up to tourneys to show their might to the arcade players and etc (Well, only if the companies don't fuck up and the console versions are identical to their arcade counterparts). Sponsors and organizers will have to take note of this. I remember listening to an interview djWheat had with Justin Wong. He asked something along the lines of, “Justin if I gave you 2 million dollars what kind of tournament would you run?” Justin responded with SF4, SC4, Tekken 6, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (All of which are familiar games, can be played casual/hardcore and have online play). He also explained why. He said that those games would be the one's that could bring in the most people, whether hardcore or casual. I agreed with what he said. Fighting games could rise to computer game level. Also another thing, is that the players who go to the events can socialize and become new blood in other games too. More people will help the scene (Whether good or bad ;_; look at Halo lol).
I know my points are really unorganized but I'm just writing a bunch of crap I'll forget about. I don't know much about the computer FPS category, but I do hope that a predecessor will come soon. Perhaps a new game that will rise about quake/counter-strike. Also I'm not trying to make older games disappear either they can stay! I guess WoW Arena can stay too, I mean a lot of people actually play that so I don't mind it being around. Also more tournament organizers should have more varied game lineups, such as WCG, and you know events that have more than one genre of game. I say that because gamers themselves should connect to more people even outside their game, because if more gamers come together good things may come to be. Let's go e-sports!
Yeah. Stephen Lynch songs aside, this is about grandfathers... Well my grandfather in particular. I'm writing this on a whim maybe because I saw something inspiring, or something subconscious made think of doing this. My grandfather's condition hasn't been totally awesome as of late, but he still keeps going to work and owning all the 'kids' at the boat company. He fiberglasses boats or something like that. They offer him supervising jobs and he doesn't take them. The reason being he can't “speak english”. He's been working there for a long time now. Last night my grandmother and my mother took him over to the hospital for monitoring and thats when a little switch flicked up (or down according to how your lights work).
It'd be pretty empty in the house if he was gone, eh? I live with my grandparents (its actually pretty damn cool cause old people rock. The details of why are a bit out there, but it had to do with a little inter-family dispute we had about the restaurant (and me lol) which is way long gone now. My gramps was a pretty mellow dude. He didn't talk much unless he really had to and usually he just grunted a lot hahahaha. He'd come home and eat and then watch his lakorns. He liked to play cards too, but it was usually kind of asian stuff (I can't really tell you what card games, I only know them by watching) Yeah he'd pass time playing cards, or checkers with a fabricated board and lots of beer caps (one side up, one side down yeahhh). He was really cool, and kinda random since he would just buy stuff whenever he felt like it. “Oh lets go get a new refridgerator,” “Oh, I want a new TV,” stuff like that. He'd buy me stuff if he felt like it lol.
Other than that when I was growing up I didn't really know him that much. I knew that he, my grandmother and my mom came to America around the time of the Vietnam War. Yea my mom and grandma have told me stories about what he did during that time. He was pretty badass I guess. He was a soldier but when they were called up, I guess there was a period of disagreement or some shit, because a lot of the Laotian soldiers fled across the Mekong to “safety” Thailand. Basically he turned into a wanted fugitive. He left my mom and grandma at the village (they lived in Pakxe, in south Laos) and told them that he would be back to get them. And after a while, when he got enough money he put it on his word.
He was going back to get them. First he paid some military comrades or friends or something to send a message to my grandmother that they would be leaving the next night. Apparently the villages are tight -knit so if unfamiliar people aren't seen everyone would be alerted, so the “scout team” had to arrive at night and crawl through rice paddies and stuff. They got there successfully and got the message to my grandmother. They packed up for the next day, and they gave the land to great grandmother to tend to (she's still alive btw. Amazing? Yeah I talked to her about a month ago on the phone rofl :s). They had to leave and go through the rice paddies at night too. And when they met up with gramps he carried my mom while hacking through random crap with a machete for at least two days until they got to the Mekong.
Also, there were Laotian patrols that they had to be careful for. Those dudes were shooting defectors. Luckily though Thai dudes were out to watch for any refugees and bring them to safety. My mom described it as one of the longest moments of her life. Debris was every where in that river and it was totally murky. The boat wasn't a really strong (or heavy, w/e) boat. So if they drifted into huge crap it would be trouble. They went in and got across slowly, no patrols showed up and they weren't hit with any debris. Hey, the danger was still there. They stayed in the camp for a while until they got a sponsorship from a church to move to America (They made it to Michigan. Lol, asian people in michigan.) Gramps is a pretty cool dude. He's always family first even if he doesn't say so. Always looking out. Looking out for others more than himself. Haha, my grandma and mom also told me he was jailed for awhile after smashing some guy's face in too. He hasn't been back to Laos ever since then either, so I want to take him back at least once. If you read this thats cool, I just thought I'd share and get this off my chest. I'll probably read this later and go O_o!? But whatever. Its just that Gramps is a baller.
Well, the past week I was on youtube just watching random stuff, and usually things the related tab kind of catch your eye. In this case I was searching for music and stuff, and found some really interesting/cool people. I haven't heard these people before and I thought I would share.
Fingersmoran - I guess he and his brother are a band or something. Most of the vids are 6string bass and his bro on electric drums. Pretty good.
Marie Digby - She's pretty good and pretty :o She got on to Carson Daly Show with this vid
David Sides - This dood is pretty good on the piano lol. He takes popular like rap and hiphop songs transposed (is that the word?) and actually makes them better (aka the dont have lyrics)
Xcentrictz - This guy's vids are freakin' hilarious. He covers the songs and has his own video for them which are great.
While in the IRC channel today (or yesterday or whenever it was), Mr. fanta[Rn] was linking pictures of pretty girls and stuff. Strafe told him to make a blogpost etc and he did, I believe.
After seeing that, I was downloading more photobooks again (like a few every once and a while) and I looked at my collection, and decided that I will share it. I have assembled 8 photobooks and collections from my HD and have picked out 10 pictures from each to post, as well as give you guys a download link.
They are idols that I really do like, and they are high res pictures. No joke lol. :D
Now I talked too much so lets get it started!
Ueto Aya - Breath
This is Aya's fifth photobook, and I think she looks very nice in it. There's a bunch of fun photos in it. I've been a fan of her for a while now. She was also a spokewoman for Gundam believe it or not
Horikita Maki's second photobook was shot in Portugal I believe. This photobook has some great shots of Maki. She's also an actress and I watch a bunch of her stuff so.. yeah.
Hirano Aya, the voice of Haruhi and Misa, proves she isn't just a pretty voice ;D I enjoyed this photobook, had alot of good setups and collage thingies.
Would you guys believe me if I said she was 30 years old? Well she is, and to be honest, she can still hold her own against the 20 year old idols. Aki is one of my favorite idols :D
Ogura Yuko - Koi Gokoro, Lolinco, Ringo to Momo and Yuko's Secret Room
Ogura Yuko is a very beautiful idol, although most of the photobooks listed are from 2002, when she was about 17. She's matured really nicely I would say.
Featuring idols of different ages, Bijyo Megane 2 brings out the beauty of... well beauties with glasses. I don't know most of the idols, except for Horikita Maki and Wakatsuki Chinatsu.
