tv show weeds
  zulu_nation8, Jul 11 2008

I decided to take up a tv show and someone recommended me weeds. I liked mary louise parker in angels in america. But after binging the first season, finishing up just now, I've decided to stop watching the show. The entire glamour of weeds seems to lie within a pimping out of mary louise parker, who is absolutely adorable. They make her character vulnerable. She gets dominated by men, she has serious ethical flaws, she's always overwhelmed by her surroundings which bring tragic consequences. I feel as though there's a mild sadomasochistic appeal to her character. Every episode thus far has basically been she gets into deep shit, she fucks some dude, she (sometimes) cries, but there's hope in the end. Nancy, her character, doesn't really develop, she just gets into deeper shit as the season goes on. It's all really addicting because mary louise parker is so hot and she makes Nancy so likeable, but besides that I feel like I'm watching a really complicated porno. She just gets exploited too much. Does anyone have any other recommendations for a good tv show?

[Music] The Dodos
  zulu_nation8, Jun 30 2008

I've listened to a lot of new music within the past year but none have come close to making the same impact upon my indie music sensibilities as a humble two man American folk tandem who are The Dodos. They come from San Francisco, California and have remained largely obscure until recently their second LP, "Visitor", the one I got into, drew a lot of praise from critics who frequently compare them to indie sweethearts Animal Collective and label them as psych folk. However from listening to a lot of Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, etc, and fuckloads of music in general I feel the Dodos are not really psych folk nor able to be organized more specifically into a musical category other than the general genre of folk. They have a very original blend of musical voices that is the main appeal for me about the band.

The lead vocalist/guitar player Merrick Long sings slightly like Elliott Smith, but with a very different voice. His guitar playing is complicated, folky, rhythmic, and with some world music influences. It's essentially melodic with very catchy hooks which is indeed somewhat similar to Animal Collective. But the overall style has no comparisons I can think of in popular indie music.

On the other side of the guitar, the band's drums played by Logan Kroeber, creates as much of the Dodos' sound as Long's guitars and vocals. From interviews Kroeber said his drumming is metal influenced. I don't exactly know what that means, but his drumming has a very unique and powerful rhythmic sense to it, which sometimes feel even primal. It is an integral part of the group's overall sound but undeniably sepearate from Long's guitar. It's also like nothing I've heard before, but much more so than the guitars.

I digged up some of their live performances on youtube. They mostly sing about old lovers, memories but with some metaphoric political and social commentary in between.

Their single off "Visitor": "Fools"

One of my favorites, "Ashley"

A song off of their first album, "Beware of the Maniacs". "The Ball"

Another song off of "Visitor," "Red and Purple"

Hope you liked it.

Persepolis
  zulu_nation8, Jun 28 2008

This was the best movie I've watched in maybe a year. It is perfect. Perfect storytelling, execution, perfect art. The movie is the autobiography of an Iranian woman who lived through the Iranian revolution. The details in everything, the artwork, narration, pacing, dialogue, etc, etc, are so well done that they are mesmerizing. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in a good story and particularly women because the film is ultimately feminist. So yea, go see it now.

Paranoid Park?
  zulu_nation8, Jun 27 2008

It's a movie by Gus Van Sant. Just watched it, was a very masterful and intimate portrait about a teenager, can't say more or else I'd spoil stuff. The movie would probably be better if I was gay and into young boys though. As I was watching Van Sant's static or slow mo portrait shots I thought back to My Own Private Idaho and Good Will Hunting somewhat and thought he HAS to be gay or this doesn't make sense. I checked wiki just now and sure enough he's openly homosexual. Van Sant is obsessed with good looking young males but he also happens to be one of the most talented humanistic diretors ever probably. Anyways if any of you guys have seen the film I'd like to hear your thoughts on it or on Gus Van Sant in general.

Serious Discussion about Existentialism
  zulu_nation8, Jun 19 2008

In an attempt to make my TL experience more enjoyable and at the same time generate some meaningful dialogue, I would like to start a discussion about existentialism. First questions I have are, how is Kierkergaard's existentialism different from Heidegger's?

And

Has reading existentialism influenced your life directly in any way? If yes how so

ya all you people saying its a harsh sentence really need a wakeup call. The burning cross isnt just a message saying "get out". It represents a threat, the treat of lynching and murder. Did the guy try to kill the family? no. But what is the jail time for a bomb threat or pointing a gun at an innocent person? The cross imo is much more severe because it invokes the possibility that the guy is willing do harm to the family.
And whoever brought up pot...fucking moron. These are 2 separate things. Its not like the guy burned a cross in his backyard cause he thought it looked cool or something.
If you knew anything youd know that in the past they burned crosses on peoples lawns prior to killing and burning them due to their race.

ps you people are fucking pathetic. I am so sick of your childish and idiot posts.
w/e ban me. morons.

Just thought I'd throw in a few legal clarifications on some of these cases brought up.

I was in school studying aspects of the legal system when a case come up in Virginia, well, two cases that had been combined into one to be heard by the Supreme Court. In one, two idiots burned a cross on a black family's front lawn. In the other, a local Klan leader got a big ol' jamboree together on his farm and burned a 30-40 foot high cross about a hundred yards off of the highway but it could be seen for miles around. Both were arrested and found guilty of, more or less, intention to commit and threatening violence under a Virginia law that forebade the use of burning crosses as "free speech" as they showed a direct threat on life and a clear and present danger. The Supreme Court upheld the law banning cross burning as a form of speech not protected by the Constitution because cross burning, unlike flag burning and the like, has a history of surrounded by violence and the meaning is never one of protest or speech but of fear and hatred.

That said, 10 years is a light sentence. In Virginia it was up to 15 for awhile, maybe that has changed. Cross burning is not justified, the ACLU even gave up trying to defend it. These guys protected Communists during the Cold War and they just threw up their hands after this ruling. I was born and raised in the South and cross burning is never friendly but it is no longer a hate crime, it is now viewed legally as an unmistakable threat of violence, so white, black, blue people all have the same protection against it, and that kind of speech is definitively not protected by our legal system.

As far as the guy who got jail time for spitting in public with AIDS, if he spat on someone, I'd believe that story might be true as willingly and knowingly giving someone HIV is now a crime.

And for the black kid who got put in jail for punching the white kid under "attempted murder." That case is known as the Jenna 6. Look it up, it's a travesty of justice. The Supreme Court appeal is supposed to come up this year (?? not positive on that).

Some food for thought.

Oh, and stack is pretty much dead on in his argument, from a legal perspective.

A man in Texas was recently sentenced to 35 years for spitting in public because he had AIDS.

that was absolutely right IMO.
people with AIDS should be separated and marked (big tatoo on the forehead?), like in the past people with leprosy

this is harsh, but probably the only way to stop the pandemic

that guy was a bit of a scapegoat, to show others people with aids, that they cant abuse their sickness.

The chance of afflicting someone with aids through spitting at someone is so small that you could as well charge a man trying to delay police officers in the sun for intentionally trying to give them skin cancer.

Blood and a needle, otherwise the risk of getting the virus is extremely small. In fact anything but blood and needle have very small chance of transmitting HIV, even sex.(Chance from sex is roughly 1/1000, then imagine the chance of it in a small piece of spit with a very short contact time)
I am unbanned proof that TL doesn't ban people solely based on their opinions!

This was one of the most recent travesties in the American legal system. I was very pissed however that this incident wasn't even recognized until about 1 year later by the media, and the band wagoning on this case was ridiculous.

I missed how Drug Laws and Cross Burning fit in the same category, at least choose something else related to the first amendment to argue :/ (Granted I believe pot should be legalized, this thread is not for that discussion)

WOW I won a clan war game
  zulu_nation8, May 14 2008

So today svs played s.top for a friendly clan war, I don't know why I was in the lineup because I suck and am dota'ed out but very suprisingly I managed a respectable 1:1 vs a decent P, (Lv15ish like B iccup). 1st game I had just finished playing dota and forgot how to play zvp, 2nd game the P rushed me but I felt the power of mondragon in me and cracklinged him to death, afterwards he said he was tired, or probably didn't wanna face cracklings anymore and forfeited. So yay I got a clan war win 2:1, my first in about 5-6 months vs a good team.
