I looooooooove power metal and heavy metal, two god tier genres. However, I feel that the songs I listen to are quite limited, and I want to get TL's opinions on some good power metal songs. Songs are listen to are basically the very common ones: some of Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Bullet for my Valentine and Stratovarius. The more guitar/drum there is, the better. If there are solo parts, even better! Vocals do not really matter :p Recommend away!
DragonForce of course. But you (like everyone else) probably already know about them. Afterall, they are the pioneers of the post-music and post-speed genres.. Nobody hasn't heard of them.
The Cage by Sonata Arctica The Power of One by Sonata Arctica I recommend the majority of Sonata's work before Unia, which has a lot of good power metal in it, before they switched genres. Especially the Silence/Winterheart's Guild/Ecliptica albums
Blind Guardian is fantastic too and worth a listen. Dragonforce is popular as hell so give it a shot. Look at Iced Earth/Manowar/Hammerfall.
My favorites are definitely Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. Oh and I am talking purely about Power Metal here. I never liked power that much and I stopped listening to metal some while ago.

I hope I dont piss off anyone, but half of their stuff sounds the same with ridiculous lyrics to boot.
Edit: I forgot about avantasia's metal opera. That stuff is fantastic and worth listening to. I felt I was missing something here.
Iron savior, primal fear, king diamond (the vocals bother some people. but his conceptual albums are so good and the solos are godlike). And Iron maiden, LISTEN TO MAIDEN. il put up some links after im done eating.
Operation Ground and Pound beats the shit out of TTFATF Valley of the Damned is classic, way better than any of the rest of the songs they did. Fields of Despair is great
Look me up, if you want those stuff I got them in my com.

Oh yes, these songs are fucking awesome, especially The Cage. One of my favourite Sonata Arctica songs EVER.
Listening to all the youtube videos, thanks for the recommendation guys, keep em coming!
avantasia - the metal opera (probably one of the best power metal album)
Iced Earth - Something wicked this way comes (whole album is good) Might not be what you're looking for
I think you might really like Children of Bodom if you dont mind the vocals. If you want a specific song to youtube my first which got me into them was Silent Night Bodom Night. I think its the type you're looking for
I think avantasia and children of bodom are the type you might be looking for while iced earth is just a personal favorite of mine that you might want to check out.
I just got back from a Hammerfall/Powerglove concert actually, haha. Was badass.
Here's my list.
Altaria Avantasia Angra Amon Amarth Austrian Death Machine Axenstar Axxis Blind Guardian Dragonforce Dreamtale Dream Evil Dream Theater (a little slower, but has some AWESOME SONGS. Glass Prison ex) Edguy Epica Evergrey Falconer (favourite++) Firewind Five Finger Death Punch Freedom Call Gamma Ray Hammerfall Helloween Iced Earth Iron Fire Iron Maiden Judas Priest Kamelot Kotipelto Leverage Lordi Majesty Manowar Megadeth Persuader Powerglove Rammstein (german) rhapsody of fire Sabaton Savage Circus Symphony X Turisas
I am definitely missing some. Power Metal is for real men.

When I enjoy a band, it's usually because ALL their music is badass. But, as you wish. Here is the Glass Prison song I mentioned by Dream Theater. Very unique. Was my favourite song for a while. It's a long ass song. Takes two parts for youtube.
Manowar - Hand of Doom Blind Guardian - Another Holy War Judas Priest - Leather Rebel HammerFall - Heeding The Call Freedom Call - Metal Invasion Rhapsody (of Fire) - March of the Swordmaster Gamma Ray - Dethrone Tyranny DragonForce - Soldiers of the Wasteland
I only have the revised version for San Sebastian haha. I actually have most of Sonata Arctica songs, but don't have time to listen to all of them and pick out. Any specific ones?
Btw, I can't find where to get Devil's Ground by Primal Fear and The Metal Opera Pt II by Avantasia, so... anyone will be kind enough to *ahem* PM me?

Use Demonoid for music.
For Sonata songs, here is what ill recommend from what I remember: My Land Blank File FullMoon Mary lou All of Silence, its their best album Abandoned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited The Cage Silver Tongue The Misery( not power metal though) Broken( Not power metal) The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me The Ruins of My Life Draw Me( not power)
Cant remember much from Unia/Reckoning Night. And I've never listened to Days of Grays.

I hate to have to say something all elitist and everything...but exactly what did Dragonforce pioneer? -_-
Well, if you go by their website, they're "Film Score Metal" yes, but most people I know (myself included) consider them to fit best in the Power genre due to the symphonic components and similar. Admittedly their style is definitely not for everyone, and if kona doesn't care a ton about the vocals and just wants guitars and drums they may not be the best fit. Although there are a few specific tracks that might fit well; I'd suggest Knightrider of Doom, Triumph or Agony, Unholy Warcry, and Dawn of Victory.
Kamelot deserves another mention because it hasn't come up enough in this thread, although they have a more vocalist centric style (though with Roy Khan doing your vocals you'd be dumb not to emphasize them). I'd suggest checking out the albums Fourth Legacy, Epica, and especially The Black Halo - the entire albums are so good it's difficult to recommend individual songs.
Additionally, as far as Dragonforce goes, yes, a lot of the songs sound similar, but if you really want fast guitars and drums and don't care about a lot else, Dragonforce delivers in spades. TTFAF is really not one of their better songs; it's just well known because of Guitar Hero. Check out the entire Valley of the Damned album for a better primer on Dragonforce than TTFAF.

Most power/prog metal bands, despite being European, sing in English.
About Dragonforce, my opinion is that once you've heard 1-2 of their songs, you've heard them all =P They seriously all sound the same =P Doesn't mean I'm not partial to Fury of the Storm and Soldiers of the Wasteland though...
These are some songs, but I would recommend the entire discography of basically all these bands.
Sonata Arctica - Eighth Commandment Nightwish - Poet and the Pendulum; there's a significant number of people who don't like Dark Passion Play, but it's actually my favorite Nightwish album, and I also like all of the one with Tarja. Blind Guardian - Valhalla Iron Maiden - Hallowed be Thy Name Dream Theater - Octavarium; haters gonna hate, I loved that album. Communic - Raven's Cry Epica - Reign to Surrender Kamelot - The Black Halo Symphony X - The Sacrifice
every metal thread on TL turns into an elitist circle jerk where people bash on the newer metal or bands that "have made it" and are "too mainstream."
It is really depressing you guys.. why can't someone say "I like Dragonforce, give em a shot" without everyone saying "They are fucking trash."
This is music, if it isn't his taste he won't listen. If it is however he will gain SO MUCH from it.. why snub him that opportunity with your nay-saying just because it didn't fit YOUR taste.
most of us can agree that country music sucks right? Well guess what? For others that is like, the most harmonic beautiful sound ever.. gives them memories and feelings of joy. I don't like it at all.. but I certainly wouldn't waltz around telling everyone that likes it they are bad/retarded.
agreed, it's like if someone posted a blog asking for country music, I would expect people to recommend "good" country music rather than "bad" country music
how many people here say dragonforce live? When I saw them with all that remains, in flames and a a band called horse I had an amazing time.
I listen to power metal AND i like DF. Am I powermetal enthusiast, nope. But I like the genre.
And yes boesthius you could word it differently: And get different messages. On the 1 side you come off like an elitist douche (metal on this site is tainted because of the laarge number of people that are that way) OR you could sound helpful and be like "huh, well if you like them try this X I think they are better"
I'm not going to crusade the matter since it'd be 1 versus 500 but I really think some of you should try and tone it down. I LOVE metal but almost never discuss it here because I am tired of getting judged for what I like musically.

I think that happens in every genre, but metal is probably #2 behind punk kids... god, those people are annoying. Cool thread though, lot of stuff to check otu

Let me guess... people say what you like isn't "metal"? Seriously just a guess.
Also to Konadora all of the bands mentioned are great choices but if you want a really good power metal experience I can't say enough about Kamelot - The Black Halo. It's an album and I do that because to only list songs would not do the entire event of listening to it justice.
edit: HAHA Macavenger said the same thing basically. It's also good to see the album mentioned a few times
These three albums are masterpieces. I have no idea how Ensiferum managed to make such an incredibly awesome debut album. I'm amazed to this very day. Visions is possibly Stratovarius finest moment and Nightfall in middle earth is on my top 10 albums of ALL time.
PS. Manowar are awesome too. I don't care if they take themselves very seriously or enter the stage on motorcycles. They make so good music.

Its funny how i know them but when it comes to mainstream music i just found out who keisha was like 2 days ago.
haha I have like no idea who any mainstream artists are. All I know is that all the popular radio stations these days play the same five songs over and over.
I was gonna say something like, "Just waiting for FragKrag to come tell everyone that their taste in music sucks and this is what they should be listening to", but then Inc had that post... and Frag, well he's Frag and I'll love him regardless.
P.S- boesthius is an elist douche, but a really cute one
Speed of Light, Stratosphere, Will the sun Rise, and Night Time Eclipse are all so fucking amazing. It's really saddening to see Stratovarius's later works though
Well.. I know it's not power metal... >.>...<.<... but the album Sound Of Perseverance is a pretty kick ass record for drums and guitar imo. Vocals also aren't really extreme by metal standards.
Worth listening to even if you end up hating it. lol
Not sure how useful more yt links are this deep in a thread, but I just wanted to say how AWESOME it is to see power & heavy metal getting some light ^^
My only beef with these threads is I end up listening to metal for hours on end and wondering where all my time went >.>
Luca Turilli - Demonheart
Judas Priest - Nightcrawler
If you like heavy metal, the Painkiller album by Judas Priest is about as good as it gets.

Yesss
I just played the song Destiny in my head, it's pretty awesome too. I think Infinite is a pretty kick ass album as well, although sometimes forgotten. Lord of the Wasteland from Fourth Dimension album rules too.
I wanted to bump this thread because I love power/epic/melodic/metal and I'm always looking for new bands. However I didn't see anyone post anything about a new band named "Pathfinder" which I really wanted to share, because I can't get enough of their new album! Check them out! ♥
