Hey guys, just a few questions about headphones and mics ect...
I need to get a new headset and by chance came across this thread http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=148464 where the general concensus was that the steelseries siberia was the way to go.
Now i need some new headphones, but i wont be needing them for casting just general listening to music, playing starcraft and talking on skype or vent. As such im wondering if these would be overkill, considering i just use the onboard sound card on my motherboard and definatly dont consider myself an audiophile.
The final thing id like to ask is about one of the final few comments in the thread i linked at the top. It was that buying headphones and a seperate mic would be alot better. I have no idea if this is true or not but it seems logical so i guess i was wandering if you guys could recomend a decent set of headphones and seperate mic if that setup is better. Bearing in mind the fairly basic needs that they would be used for.
Thanks

What's your motherboard's onboard sound codec? e.g. something like Realtek ALC882. A lot of onboard sound nowadays actually isn't that bad.
What kind of music?
Would you want closed-back (sound isolating) or open (no isolation) headphones?
And most importantly, what kind of money would you want to spend?
Mic + headphones is modular and generally cheaper for the same quality because you don't need to pay the "hi I'm a dumb gamer that will pay a marked-up price for specialty gear targeted towards gamers" tax. If one breaks, you don't have to replace both parts. But an all-in-one headset could be more convenient.

ALC888 here, quality is good. I'd go with Headphones + Mic over a headset if you don't mind the extra wire. I only say that because I regularly ruin headsets by tripping over the cord and killing a channel.

Headsets are generally better @ drowning out background noise.
I have the Logitech G35 Headset (which is actually quite awesome, I dropped 100$ on it but the voice quality on the mic and the sound on the headset is really quite good) - I really like the ability to mute the mic just by tilting it up and also adjusting the volume and such with the controls on the side of it.
I also have a Blue Snowball microphone which has AMAZING voice quality, but it is extremely sensitive so I can't really use it when there is any background noise going on. Day9 and TheGunRun use this mic as well I think, I don't know of anyone else.
Really it depends on what kind of environment you are in, but the headset is probably the better way to go unless you live alone or are generally alone in a room in which case a stand alone mic would do just fine. I don't know about the Steelseries headsets from experience but everyone seems to like them.
