OMG ALREADY! guys, we know BW is more technical, we know it's harder, we know you need more apm, we know MBS and Auto-mine and infinity control groubs are waaay easier then how it was in BW. Anyone who's ever played both knows this already. And anyone who hasn't well they do now cuz of the amount of pure bitching and raging that are on any blogs or the general forums where SC2 forum posters and BW forum posters have the misfortune to cross paths.
WE KNOW YOU HATE IT! but really, this is 2010 now, Starcraft II IS out wether you like it or not, if you want to stick with BW then that's awesome, that's great, I hope you do because I'm a big BW fan, never had the APM to be great but i was a solid D/D- and I never ever ever want it to die. But seriously, why do you guys put down anyone who ever mentions SC2? it's great that it's out, it's a new, totally different game, it's got great potential as showcased by many of the top tier players who've only just started to play around with as many possibilities as they can, and it's bringing a magnifying glass over the e-sports scene. Don't you guys want e-sports to be huge? well, guess what, if it becomes huge in the west, it won't be because of BW, cuz that's been going on for 10 years. What we need is fresh blood, wouldn't it be AWESOME to have leagues HERE for BW and SC2? or even just for SC2? giving true potential to e-sports outside korea.
Anyways, little rant here cuz im just sick and tired of moronic one line post that say crap like 'lol, nub, play bw or stfu' or some stupid crap like that doesnt bring anything but a potential flame war to threads. We don't come on TL to argue which game is better, they are BOTH great IMO. some SC2 players disagree, some BW players disagree. So let's all agree to disagree, we don't need to flame one another, as far as I'm concerned we all love e-sports and the Korean pro-scene wether it be the GSL for some or the OSL/MSL/Proleague for others. We love these games, both, individually, but we do NOT need to insult each other over the games we play.

Thank you for posting this for me.

Do you seriously think that all of TL hates SC2? Or even a majority?

the Dagon Knight3993 Posts
I'm not sure why, but I really do feel compelled to click on blogs even though I know what's going to be inside them.
Then, when I get in here, I hate myself.
This whole debate has been done to death :/ It's disappointing to go around in circles over and over.
|
SC2 being 'too easy' is a bullshit excuse for people to just hate. The game is pretty hard and deep as it is. Do people honestly think they'll be disadvantaged because of the lower skill ceiling? To me, just sounds like people making excuses that BW carry overs might lose to fresh RTS players because it's easier.
How many amazing players are there right now in SC2? Not that many... You can tell the difference between true gosus like tester and just another high ranked ladder player.
|
I dont think its reasonable to go into an BW thread and go "FLASH SHOULD GO TO SC2 CAUSE BW SUCKSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" or "SC2 is so much better this... look at the imbalance of terran in BW!!!!" I really only see SC2ers being derailed if they do something obnoxious as that (most were warned/banned too)
|
i think a lot of us who are primarily concerned with BW feel that the community is putting BW out to pasture before it's really necessary. In some ways I guess those who really care about it don't want to see it die a sad and slow death, but would rather it go out in some dignified manner by passing the torch to SC2. For me, I'll wait until I find SC2 entertaining to watch, but the way I see it right now is that the game is experiencing a mini-boom because of its newness, and the actually redeeming qualities of the game are a bit hard to gauge at the moment. Most people on this website don't "flame" eachother anyway, but I think the defensiveness of BW-focused people is justified due to the game's heritage vis-a-vis the novelty of SC2.
|
All I know is that people who don't share my exact personal past times are boring scrubs with no skills.
|
I don't have a problem at all with the things that make SC2 "easy", like MBS, automine, etc.
The problem I have is the way that Blizzard is going about their balancing of the game and how simplistic all of the new units are. First off, the maps are absolutely horrid. They disallow for any kind of safe economic play whatsoever. You're forced to be aggressive off of one base, or else you lose if you do any kind of economic opening at all. Expanding on that, there are hardly any decent spellcasters in the game, and there are hardly any units that can be used defensively to allow you to fast expand, fast tech, etc.
This TL article pretty much describes why I still can't bring myself to like SC2 more than BW so far: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=120471
|
could you show some examples of said behavior? are you reading the sc:bw forum or something?

I don't hate SC2, it's just that I don't like part of the crowd that it attracted. By this I mean people who spew ignorant statements in response to both BW and SC2, and those who bm on a regular basis.

I hate blizzard and gretech.
|
I agree with the majority of your post about people who aren't willing to accept SC2. The only think I don't really like is how the opening screams something along the lines of "FINE, YOU'RE RIGHT. I AGREE MR. OH SO RIGHTEOUS ONE. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? I DON'T EVEN CARE". To me it just feels like an ignorant thing to say in an argument/debate. It shows you lost your cool, which is not something that backs your argument.
edit: I know this is a rant and not some well thought out proof-read essay, but just throwing my thoughts out there.

I'm not saying that ALL TL hate starcraft 2 or that even a majority of TLers do, I'm saying it's really obnoxious to be going through a thread or a blog and have that snide, derogatory comment thrown in there by someone, FOR NO REASON.
Like I said, I love both games, and loving one more then the other or loving one and dislking/hating the other does not mean that you get a viable to be unpleasant. For some people Starcraft 2 IS their gateway into competitive RTS. Some people hear of this amazing website, and this amazing community which, literally, it took me an hour at most to absolutely fall in love with TL and just adore everything in it, and love how kind and how supportive people on here are. But ever since SC2 came out it seems that some people are just really bitter, because their, im gonna say childhood even tho it may not be really accurate, love is being replaced slowly but surely.
And yes, I also am sad to see BW go little by little, I'm sad that the skill ceiling is lower in ways, but I love that these added touches to this new game, like auto-mine and MBS, in the long run, that will help a different layer to the game entirely, where we will see things that are just amazing from people that put a lot of thought into their play, but don't necessarily have the hand speed required to do it in BW which is so much harder to master and so much technical.
so yes, you can look at this and say that it's a useless blog, that it's a useless post, that you've seen it a trillion times before. Even if it has been posted before, it's obviously not gotten the message across, there's no need to be obnoxious or anything (i actually mean desagreable, but cant find the english word for it) about someone preferring SC2.
plus wat if a newbie comes on to TL and wants to learn and share his SC2 passion with all of us, what if he stumbles upon of those threads, where someone has to say something derogatory and then someone agrees and, like, pokes their BW only pals to come post more grievances they have with SC2 and then that little newbie (i feel noob and newbie are two very very different terms btw) decides that, you know what? he won't register to this community and you know what else? he'll miss a hell of a community and he'll miss meeting some great people and he's the one thats gonna be punished for it, just because he can stumble onto the wrong thread.

We know SC2 has better graphics, we know SC2 has more tourney money for foreigners, we know you want everyone to worship SC2. WE DON'T CARE AND DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!

I'm more concerned because a lot of the people doing this are otherwise reasonable veterans of TL. Random people spewing caps-locked garbage about BW is one thing but people with thousands of posts writing massive diatribes about SC2 fans is another.

do you even see the ignorance in this? I'm not trying to bring down BW or raise SC2 up, like i said multiple time, I love both games. What I'm saying is that YES we've heard your grievances but what the hell do you want us to do? boycott it? turn back time to like 2007 and kill Dusting Browder? there's nothing TO do really. One day you'll have to accept it that the starcraft scene is shifting towards SC2

Grobyc, I know what you're saying, and yes I did lose my cool there a little, I started off with a strong temper but then I did calm down and just wanted to get some of these points across. Nothing is static, nothing is permanent, organisms evolve, the earth changes around us, the sun will die out one day, and Starcraft: Brood War will be replaced sooner or later.

this. But really these kind of people come with any game, it's just that TL has had a huge influx in its population so naturally you're gonna attract every whacko possible, like even the people that will some day only visit gosugamers are still here for the moment cause they've yet to be banned.
I really really hate how many tards it has brought it too, but to get a huge following unfortunately even the bm idiot has to like it cause there's alot of them out there. But tl is doing a decent job and slamming those people into their place.
It also naturally does this because of the trend of games becoming more mechanically simple to attract more people, just like everything else in technology!
I hope by the end of the year though that the sc2 forum will be cleaned up alot more because it's an ongoing and painful looking process lol, i cant even read that part of the forums for fear of overwhelming rage.

if your favorite pastime for the past 12, 10, 5, or even single year is being eaten alive you'd feel bitter. its (mostly) misplaced blame, but it has to go somewhere, and blizzard is often seen as a single entity with sc2.

I like BW more because of strategic diversity and the larger scale of the game, with more things happening at once, and more micro. I couldn't care less about SC2's lack of mechanics. Stupid thread.

I played BW since Day 1 and am not bitter in the least. BW was my favorite game for 12 years straight. But it has run it's course. Nothing wrong with something new.

just because i've only recently discovered TL.net does not mean that I haven't loved SC forever. I got it when i was like 10, and i have played it alot since then, I use to play like once a year for a few months and only once i found TL did i get serious about it.

I hear Terran is even more imbalanced in SC2.
|
prolly has something to do with the fact that a lot of sc2 fans who never played bw just want bw to die off. if you want some examples you can read any of the kespa/gretech threads.

I'm glad that the OP has a very tolerant attitude, but the negative vibe of hate for players from both games comes from well.... players of BOTH games. SC2 players in the gretech/kespa thread don't see the merit in BW at all, and they'd much rather just have it dead. As a former BW player, I think that's a total affront to my pastime. SC2 is an amazing game and it can and should develop on its own merits. BW players should respect that despite the need to nitpick on certain weaker elements of the game, which have already been brought to bear esp. the lack of truly dynamic game-breaking spells. More than likely, we will see players grow and innovate, but as of right now, the old and the new are trying to fall into place.
It's rather inevitable there'd be lots of butthurt players on both sides. So in response to the OP, just brush off the hate. E-sports will continue to exist, even if the professional scene weakens tremendously. I think SSBM/SSBB as well as the street fighter games are a really good case in point. The games will find their niche audience, and esports will continue to stun us all. I for one am hopeful.

If e-sports becomes huge in West, it won't be due to SC2 either.
I've seen few past leagues outside of Korea for many reasons. When I watched ESL (IdrA vs Demuslim), I saw a potential. A potential for a game to succeed. Despite what everyone else said, it seemed like SC2 was quite enjoyable with various strategies, counters, controls etc.
And then I tuned into MLG, looking for the same potential that I saw in ESL. Instead, all I see is mediocre plays, bad unit controls, horrible placement/build orders etc. To sum everything up in one word: crap. I don't even know how some people from that tournament considers themselves to be good enough to play at a professional level; it was like watching 60 ROCKs playing against each other. Horrible Cheesy games that were at least bearable due to day[9] casting.
SC2 has some potential, with some fixes that I think are required (seriously, why do we see ball vs ball all day? It's like watching 2 soccer balls moving through a map, and each player is trying to score the ball into the opponent's main. And no, don't compare the balls to recall; it's a completely different issue here). However, with the given gameplay at the moment and what the players are considering themselves to be (it was like some D player from iCCup playing in a WCG qualifier just so that he can be called a 'progamer'), I don't see it succeeding.
Gom's actually doing a good job with GSL. Although foreigner participation is limited (due to the fact that the players have to stay in Korea), they are giving everyone a chance to become part of a huge tournament, and selects the players through a huge open tournament. This means, unlike some tournaments, only best of the best will end up on Ro 64 and be televised.
P.S. Every e-sports has a great community behind them. However, for SC2.... well, let me quote from my friend.
Friend:i just went into the SC2 strategy section I will never be the same again
me: why...
Friend: well everyone was like "ohh sc2 forum is so bad and filled with retarded people" so i checked it out and needless to say, i raged
me: why did you rage...
Friend: the intelligence level of the posters is so low itsl ike "I base traded with a Terran 3 tiems today, and all he did wasl ift and remake his base. Lift buildings is imba!"
He and I were joking few days ago about how we can reach high diamond and turn pro if we had SC2 with decent computer. But after thinking about it, I don't think it's a joke anymore.

So imagine you play SC1 since the 9th grade of high school. Then you discover TL and find the niche community with a lot of well-educated and pleasant people (for the most part) revolving around a game you like/love. They all seem to appreciate the knowledge base TL has and respect for the game of SC:BW.
Then you see the events that have unfolded recently after years of fandom of PL, OSL, MSL and most importantly the players, only to watch professional SC1 and SC2 tear a lot of those establishments apart.
I'm not blaming any party involved, but the fact of the matter is TL is based on SC1 and professional BW in Korea, KeSPA being horrible or not. I feel like people have forgotten where TL came from and it's going to rot from the inside out. This is coming from someone who has no ill-will towards this website or it's people (well, minus new posters who seem to only comment on 'balance issues').
TL;DR I can't stand new posters who have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to SC:BW and the development of a community over a game that yes, was hard to be good at. You want longevity? Or just some new units every year or so when the expansion pack comes out to get people to buy a game yet again? If you want longevity you need to foster an eSports community that's like a free market.. you can't monopolize the tournament scene in Korea, and monopolize the way people connect to each other (the ohsogreat BNet 2.0).
How much of SC2's success is owed to professional BW in Korea and elsewhere, and how that sustained the game? Well, TL owes its existence to it...

bad analogies, knitting and sewing arent the same, u cant knit with a sewing machine. someone who's played rugby has no reason to associate with football in the first place. any and every guitarists plays both accoustic and electric because the range is bigger and you can get different sounds from each.
and just like scbw and sc2, no-one's asking you to switch, if you dont want to then dont. people who try to make you do it are idiots. I wish that whole kespa/gretech thing wud just end and scbw and sc2 co-exist as e-sports (dont we all?)
oh and to the guy who said that watching SC2 is like watching D level ICCUP, um, HELLO!!? the game is a MONTH old! that is exactly the kind of idiotic statement that adds fuel to the fires

I'm sorry, I thought we were here to state our opinions, not to bash at someone who says 'D is like Diamond on SC2'
If I'm adding the fuels to the fires, then so be it. Because it's only telling me that you never read the whole argument; you only skipped to your favorite section (a.k.a. majority of SC2 players are D blahblah), then bashed on me using that.
Oh, and a month old or not, people with 70 APM considering themselves to be pro is ridiculous.

I agree. I'm glad that the Liquid clan can have a second life thanks to SC2. I don't really hate SC2, but I hate what it implies for the BW scene, and I hate what Blizzard is doing in Korea, so I'm boycotting this game.

The hate comes from a VERY vocal minority. Just ignore them. Most people will agree BW is the best game of all time. However SC2 is out, It's fun, and people don't NEED to be NaDa to play it at a highly competative level. However people like NaDa can and will still beat other 1200-1500pt diamond players
|
We don't (or, at least, I don't) hate SC2. In fact, I love SC2 as its brought many of my friends who were tired of playing BW back into RTS gaming which I can enjoy with them. What I dislike are these new lil SC2 kiddies who disrespect BW, and think they are great gamers just cause they can reach some level of diamond.
|
I personally hate SC2 and boycott it because Blizzard/Gretech are literally trying to kill BW in Korea. -__-
|
I want to see pro SC2 because I want pro e-sports to grow outside of Korea, and it's a fun game to watch.
I want to see pro BW because it's an even more fun game to watch.

I don't think this is really necessary...
I mean sure, I sorta got bored of playing SC2....but I definitely don't hate it. >.>

If Blizzard and Gretech could just back the fuck off and let BW co-exist with SC2 in Korea I'll support the game 100%.
|
I can't buy a game when the developers are being so stupid. What makes me angry is that so many sc2 enthusiasts eat the shit that blizz feeds to them. I am fed up with that- but really sc2 is an ok game. Too bad the people who made it are beyond terrible. (why are they trying to kill bw?)
I just don't understand....
|
I find SC2 quite enjoyable to play and even to watch from time to time.
In fact the SC2 crowd, while disappointing in previously unimaginable ways, is not entirely deplorable. Still, I have one salient beef with the SC2 crowd, and that is specifically with those among them who truly believe BW to be unworthy of respect. Some of the most endearing relics of my childhood were games from BW's era, so the criticism of its graphics as a reason for discounting the game entirely particularly annoys me.
I've come to terms with the future of Starcraft, but it seems many new SC2 fans can't even be bothered to revisit the past.
Oh well, it's natural for people to be disinterested in the past. If an inclination towards learning from the past existed in people at large, no society with access to recorded history would ever desire war.
|
I play SC2 solely because of matchmaking. I estimate my BW skills to be below D- at the moment and the only way I can find games against people my skill level is through bnet 1.0 which has lots of hackers. I still like BW better both to play and watch.
|
Although I don't have SC2, I am a quite a bit saddened by the fact that blizzard made the decision to make it easier than BW. Basically, they lowered the ceiling at which you can max out your skill in that game, which means more people can reach that ceiling, which in turn makes the game not so awe inspiring as BW did. That's my only quarrel.
