banner by the amazing deL+ Show Spoiler +*WARNING*Big pics ahead. (and if you want them I have even bigger ones)
Has everyone gotten used to the new design yet? When I first saw the new logo (which is what? six weeks ago?) I absolutely loved it and knew I had to do this.
"This" you say? The few of you who remember this blog may have a good idea of what's coming. First though, I'd like to thank suffeli for helping out and designing the logo. Now then, if y'all are ready, I present what's been eating away at my spare time for the last couple of weeks.
For those still wondering: It's the TeamLiquid logo made out of chainmail. The design of this has been quite a challenge. The MBC logo was something along the 30x30 pixels line. I got some pixelated versions of the TL logo from suffeli, but a simple 1 on 1 pixel conversion like I did with the MBC Logo would either become too indistinct to be aesthetically pleasing at all or so big it could protect the Trojan Horse. I therefore tried putting semi-pixels and quarter/three-quarter pixels in this, which was harder than it sounds since chainmail doesn't quite work like neat squares. It took some trial and error, but I'm really happy with the result!
Some stats: I used galvy (grey) and aluminium/aluminum (white) for this. The galvy will become a good bit darker over time so the figure will be more distinct (compare with the MBC logo *pic below*). The wire is 1.5mm (galvy) or 1.6mm (alu) thick (16 gauge). Total amount of rings is 6281. All rings have a 6mm diameter. This totals about 140 meters of wire. The whole thing weighs just under 2 kilograms.
Work in Progress I took some pics along the way, they're in the spoiler below:

What do with it?? When I first started out with it I wanted to, ambitiously, get it done before Gamescom. You know how SC:BW players have cheerfuls in their booths? I wanted to give this to Naz to take to Korea so the TL players could put it up in their booths. The project turned out to take much longer though and, sizewise, the thing is quite a bit bigger (and heavier!) than a regular cheerful (compare with the MBC Logo which is cheerful-size). So yeah, I really don't know whether I'd do them a favour sending this half-way across the world.
Naz, if you read this: I made this for you guys, I love TeamLiquid <333 and if you want it it's 100% yours. Maybe it can be a cool (unique!) decoration for the training house wall or a sexy convo starter at whereever it is you do your managing business. Just let me know. Until then it's going on my wall to gloat over or maybe I'll auction it to some TL-crazed fanboy out there for charity.
Well that's it for now. Hope this was enjoyable. Got another ring-blog coming up soon so keep an eye out!
- Pholon
EDIT: Almost forgot, but recently madea picture gallery with some of my stuff. Not much yet but I'll keep filling it up! http://picasaweb.google.nl/vincentkwakkel/MailGallery?authkey=Gv1sRgCOPSmt2_9YD9cQ#5516812333897277410

Holy Fuck.
You're truely amazing! X_X
|
Nice, all you need to make now is the rest of the armor. Good job, 5/5
|
that's awesome xD
Now add sleeves and send it to TLO so he can wear it for his next televised game!
|
Shit hot... that's intense... definitely worth it to keep. I wouldn't auction it off
|
Very nice job, it looks less wide then the actual logo but I've always thought the horse neck was to wide anyway. So you even managed to improve upon it!
|
|
Pretty badass. I'm sure it will look the greatest when the galvy gets darker, it seems to lack some contrast yet. Aside from that, props to you and suffeli too

turn it into a jumper and it should become the official TL uniform!

Its like knitting.
But for metal heads.

Put it on a staff so that in GSL2 whenever a liquid player marches into his booth he can have a squire holding that thing up in front of him like a herald.

ship it to korea. make liquid players wear it for every match.

It would be pretty cool if you can add it to the game ( having the TL logo on Startup instead of Jim Raynor's face).
|
oh wow, that looks epic... and time consuming!
|
|
Now all we need is a TL sword and people will have to think twice before cheesing our players in the GSL.
|
fucking awesome
make more pholon so we can go battle with them
|
i guess wearing it gives +2 awesomeness
|
Woah. I had a friend who made chainmail, but he never made designs with it. Awesome.

Time to wear it as I battle to the death (and go out looking like a total boss).

Pholon, you are a crazy man. ^^

afaik those were plastic painted to look like metal. Lots of movies do this simply because of the weight. I think the one in the new Robin Hood might be real. Ah also, fun fact: You know the series Heroes? This Asian dude find some samurai armor in a museum but it turns out to be a replica and then he travels back in time to meet the real dude? The replica has a bit of chainmail throat protector that uses a European type weave, but the real armor (when traveling back in time) uses a (historically correct) Japanese weave. Even though the series turns to shit I love them for adding this detail.

I've sold some stuff in the past but mainly small things like bracelets etc since, because such a lot of time goes into making this, it becomes quite expensive. Might sell some stuff on Saturday (probably not though) but I'll blog about it so keep a look out

Now that you mention it...yeah they were plastic. I knew TL was more hardcore then those scrubs :p

Amazing blog and work!
I want to see liquid players wearing full mail armor when they are in the boot.
That way even shaking hand with your opponent can turn into mind game ("shall i shake his hand? will he crush mine?").
Plus it would look totally badass
|
WOAH! That is awesome! It turned out really well and looks epic, must've taken so much time and effort. Your project gallery is great too! I love the jewellery you made, it's really unique and innovative. Have you ever thought about selling some of your work?
|
Send a mail to Blizzard, they should implement this armor as an easter egg in Diablo3!
TL-chainmail, whatever will this crazy community think off next. It's a very awesome idea and equally impressive execution though. How the hell did you get the idea to start doing chainmail inlays?
|

^ This. That would be so good. I would even pay for the shipping if neccesary. We could have an oGs player do this. Preferably Grrr... + Show Spoiler +or Hyperdub as punishment for beating TLO
How did you get into this Pholon? It isn't a hobby you encounter in everyday life. Do you play LARP's or something like that? Also how do you make this? Do you use a normal pliers that can be found in most hardware stores or is it special equipment?

I self-taught myself a lot by just looking at pictures. I think I came across an inlay pic (from this gallery I think) and just wanted to try it myself. The MBC Logo was my first attempt. Later wrote a guide on it too.

I saw a guy wearing a chainmail shirt at a concert and thought "hell, I can do that". Needless to say my first attempts were absolutely horrible but I read up on the matter and the basics are pretty easy once you get the hang of them. It kind of developed into more of a hobby and since 90% of it is just braindead cutting rings or making small units I can do most of the work while watching films or vods. I don't LARP and from what I understand you aren't allowed to wear actual chainmail during it? That's a massive killjoy tbh, might have gotten into it otherwise :p
I use mostly very basic tools (drill, pliers, wirecutters). You can pretty much spend 15 minutes in a DIY store and get started.

Awesome work, so how long exactly did it take you to make that all in all?
|
This is some seriously sexy stuff. Fight on holy knights of Teamliquid! + Show Spoiler +Moderators, bring justice with your mighty hammers! :3

About 20-25 hours of weaving I think. Making design and making the rings another 5 hours.

I'll actually consider this. It'll be a tanktop though or it'll be heavy as fuck.

you should make one with sleeves and all and wear it everyday... im sure youre gonna build massive muscles from wearing that all day!!

Awesome work. Looks really cool, especially when you see it will get dark in contrast with the MBC one. :D

manufacture that and ill pay for it.

I think this is what TLAF should wear, instead of those silly track outfits.

|
Amazing. If you wear that it just might work better than the legendary wolf shirts

Wow it's really amazing, love the simplicity of the light grey / dark gray contrast.
