As I near my 500th post (499, wanting that name change), I ponder how other kids my age view Starcraft. The normal ones.
A bit of my Starcraft history: When I was 5-6, I saw my sister's friend (~15 at the time) play Starcraft. I thought this game was awesome, but didn't know what it was. I went 2 years before i went to the east coast, and found one of my parent's friend playing Tree Defense (which I'm surprised hasn't been replicated). I asked my parents for Starcraft, and my world changed.
Now before this time, I had been playing Runescape (level 15 w/ level 40 mining+smithing LOL) and Maplestory. I fell in love with Starcraft, instantly. I first started with the campaign, but not knowing you could have more than 4 workers, i failed epically. I got discouraged, but went to play UMS. I did this for 2-3 years. After that, I watched my friends play at a LAN (for a birthday). I learned many things (like >4 workers is good) and reaver drops. I couldn't pull these off, so I went back to UMS.
Then my life changed as i entered 7th grade. I met my best friend, (NitrOuS, changing to NoOn soon). We played a match of regular BW. Remembering reaver drops, i won that match, and he began to rush turrets (LOL). This was the turning point for my Starcraft: BW time. We probably played 600 games in this time, bolstering my XvT to my only matchup I could play (at a E level).
We found Teamliquid.net. My friend got into the beta ~May 2010 and I had a dry spell from SC. He got bored of all the cheese in SC2, and we went back to BW. My computer could not run SC2, so I persuaded my parents to let me build a computer for $900 as Birthday+Christmas+Learning Experience. It runs Sc2 beautifully now.
After the beta, we played BW again. We frequented Teamliquid and now I visit it for about 45-60 mins a day. I play starcraft for ~2-3 hrs a day.
On the day of the release, I hitched a ride off his mom (which I now knew pretty well), and got Sc2. We played it for 6 hours a day for the next month.
Then 8th grade started. I learned I was moving at the end of September, and was saddened. We continued to play starcraft like nothing was wrong (cause starcraft is awesome)
Now we still play ,and I am 1300 diamond rand and he is 1500 diamond terran. I feel more connected with them than the friends i have made at my current school.
Starcraft: Brood War is the most awesome RTS ever, and even though my roots are rather recent, they are forever embedded in this hell of and awesome game. I still pop in and play a game or 2 on ICcup (losing 3/4 of them lol).
Starcraft 2: WoL is the RTS that I currently play the most. I think this game is MUCH less demanding APM wise, but i liked muta stacking in BW. Micro being my forte, I find hellions, banshees, phoenix, mutas to be my favorite units.
Teamliquid: The most AWESOME FORUM EVER CREATED. If this was a religion, I would be in the top 1000 of the followers (maybe 5000?). I LOVE this site, and its my top visited sites. I close it, and thanks to google chrome, i open my top 3 sites. which happens to be TL. I do this ~5 times before i realize it.
As my 499th post, (substituting as my 500th post, as 500 post is overload on the name change), i proudly announce:
I LOVE YOU STARCRAFT AND TEAMLIQUID.
OK EDIT: by friend is much more awesome than I am. He just more lurks than posts, every thing he says gets contradicted, he is annoyed at that. (eg. hellion tank counters stalker immortal. immortal shield killed by 12 tanks, tanks own the rest)

awesomesauce indeed
whats gonna be your new name

TeamLiquid loves you too, good luck getting your name change

Lol, you remember when you were 6. Also wish my parents let me have a computer when i was 13... hell when i was 17 it would've been nice. But grats on being in diamond, you know, for not being a generic 12yr old bronze player.

Fellow 13 year old here. I love this game! I'm pretty bad, but whatever. I'm only plat, but my PvT and PvP are both pretty solid. Love BW as well, can't play it at all but whatever.(Was a D- in BW)

Dude I first came here when I was 13, back in january 2003. It's literally been my homepage ever since. This community is just the best, and starcraft is indeed the best game of all time. Good to see someone your age actually has respect for BW and started off as a BW fan. That's awesome. Keep being awesome.

one of the coolest 13 y/o out there for sure ;P
damn im old (24)
|
ahh man so young!
i was about your age when i first got in touch with BW haha
|
Great post! Reminds me in a way when I was 8-9 years old and watched my dad play SC.
|
When I was your age, I thought turrets could hit ground units and tanks hit air.

When I was 13, the internet was my older brother whacking off when I tried to use the phone. I was scared of the internet for a while after he got charged like 100 bucks for one of those porn site viruses.
|
When I was your age, I played Fastest Possible and massed Carriers. :\
And prayed that nobody called my house while I was playing.
|
im 12 in january brah.. Whats good now brah! Lol. I played BW when i was lkie 7 got sc2 eventually and almost about plat level.

I remember getting home in 7th grade and using the internet for porn, but I'd have to do it in short sessions because my mom would call to check in on me. Kind of tricky to explain to your mom why the phone was busy for half an hour when you don't have a girl friend.
I think I found BroodWar when I was in fifth or sixth grade. Me and three friends played it religiously for years. We would always get together and take turns playing NR 20 FASTEST. Good times =]

This blog is made from awesomesauce. I had a similar experience with counter-strike, though never went to lans
also, Damn i feel old (19)

I missed playing bw on lan with my friends
Damn I feel so old...

Reading this blog made me realise I got into SC probably around 13 years old. Can't believe its being so long

Winning even 25% on ICCup these days is actually pretty good.....

Tell your friend to stop going to the SC2 Strategy board and start using Liquipedia instead. There's a much better load of information there.

Hmmm, if one could go back to that age in this new modern world. Would be a cool experience indeed... Man that's an awesome write up you did there. I, you and probably everyone here absolutely loves SC/SC2 and Team Liquid especially and people of all age helps contribute to that experience. Stay awesome, and take care of your youth! Dont grow up too fast

Kids like yourself scare me. :p
You'd be much better off playing some team based game (like the generation of CS kids) where you're forced into interaction and learn teamwork and social structuring. You should also pick up skateboarding and/or a guitarr - just look at Bieber - feel the pressure!
|
You are definitely among the more mature 13 yo's I've seen on the internet. Proof of what Starcraft can do for you =)
|
you are awesome bro wish i would've been smart enough to get into rts at your age. but nvm, i'm still pretty young so it's alright. i'm more and more tempted to play some BW lately as well. maybe i'll hop on iccup for the first time of my life? :D
would love to see this spotlighted, manifesto?

Nice blog mate, makes me smile

Agreed with TL being the best forum ever. That is, of course, if you're talking about the TL of 5 years ago.
+ Show Spoiler +deal with it

God brings me back. I remember discovering SC1 and AoE1 before either had xpacs when I was 12 years old. My friends and I spent endless hours in basements playing these games.
Though most of them sucked/still suck at sc/sc2.
Anyway awesome it's working out for you and gl improving.

Most intense in the late 90's ofc. It's not really the same feeling with skype or vent than having everyone in the same room. Plus you play more games and have loads of fun. Damn I got all nostalgic.
As for feeling old, I got atleast one old classmate with a kid that is 14-15yo... Think she got him around x-mas but my memory is kinda bad.

That sounds way more like starcraft there bud. You are hardly every going to see that in cs, especially when you are playing on a clans dedicated server with tons of admins. Now halo, that is a different story, It's easy to call someone a fag when you are never going to play with them again.

SO TRUE. i hated that thing.

Great story and very nicely written for a thirteen year old!
|
This is awesome, and I never would've guessed that you're thirteen. Thanks for sharing your experience +_+
|
Word i was crankin on SC when i was like 12 or so too. You'll be good in like 6 more years:D
|
*sigh* I miss those days of play Starcraft: Brood Wars with my friends in middle school... and high school... and college... :[ I barely get to play now.
|
Man I remember when I was 13 and used to play red alert (the original!) and BW on dial-up. My friends and I would struggle to stay up till 2 am (lol, it was a struggle then now its early for me) because our older siblings would want the phone or computer during the day, but it was epic nonetheless.
I think even the novelty of staying up that late and playing against each other, which was otherwise a rarity for video games (for me at least) as everything was so console oriented then, made it more special than regular gaming today. Definitely miss those times ;'(
But yeah this thread is nostalgic. It's adorable how you're at exactly 499 posts because you wanna change your name haha.
|
A) Your mom probably regrets letting you build that computer, lol.
B) She shouldn't worry, you're very articulate for your age. I wish most junior high kids in classes I teach could write like that .
|
thats awesome!
make sure to keep having fun from this game, it's the most important thing =)
|
Cool man! You remind me so much of me. Convincing my parents to let me build a computer and lanning on BW for 8+ hours with one buddy, getting only good at one match up- all sounds exactly like me. I hope you're in good shape. That would have made all my versions of those memories soooo much better :p
|
Damn I feel old (29 almost 30). It was a good read. 5/5

Lol, sup Roger (yeah thats his name). Nice blog.
