The last 2 days have had some serious ringing in the ears. Not really ringing, more like a super high pitched constant sound. I just had a doctors appointment scheduled for today luckily and told him about it. Unluckily though there doesn't seem to be anything to help it. Or it's untreatable. From all my google searching it seems it may be something called Tinnitus and that this effects roughly 1/10 of people and is fairly common.
Kind of a long shot but what I'm asking for here is anyone who has had a similar problem and what they've done to help, lessen, or stop this sound entirely. Tonight I'm going to go out and buy ear plugs and see if it helps at all. Doubtful seeing as the sound is being caused by my head but worth a shot.
So far I've also tried to sleep with a loud fan on but it didn't seem to help.
From what I've read the more you worry about it / let yourself get annoyed by it the worse it will get.
TL;dr - Loud high pitched noise, can't sleep. Suggestions?
|
might just be in your head. like brain wise thats making you think you're hearing something while your ears are fine themselves.
i read something about that in the paper the other day. it was a study done by a university too, so pretty legit.
maybe you can try smoking some pot before bed or go clubbing and get the noise to replace the ringing. give your brain a little jumpstart outta the ringing
|
Have your woman give you an old fashioned.
|
Try sleeping with some background noise to ease the effect of the high pich sound.

is it because the room's too quiet? i get similar sounds A LOT if there's absolutely no noise in my room. try turning on the air-con and go to sleep.
|
get really drunk, i mean it i got them sometimes too, never when i drink
|
This is common in people who are starting to have hearing loss due to noise (loud music, occupational noise, etc...). I would avoid listening to anything too loud for a while, or maybe forever. And you're on the right track with the fan, white noise sometimes helps. If it gets worse or doesn't go away there are options that are a little more extreme, but hopefully it won't come to that and it just goes away after a while.
|
How/when did it start? Did it increase or it was the same all the time? It can happen if you hit your ear/head I think or too loud noise. If both ears have the same sound, it's probably caused by some sound/noise, not a hit.
If it was me, I'd probably stay away from too much/loud sounds, probably chill in a forest or nature for a bit.

maybe listen to some kind of music to fall asleep?
|
if it's Tinnitus then it's due to damage - maybe someone hit you in the head or you feel asleep next to a big as speaker?
Anyways, I currently know two people with this condition. One constantly uses earplugs and hopes for recovery still. He says it's getting better.
The other one is my uncle and he drinks a lot before bedtime to coop with it.
Basically you could have this for all time since there's no cure and your best shot is to exploit things that makes you sleepy. Get air plugs asap and try to rest your ears. Nothing loud! gl
|
Could try listening to music until you find another way to deal with it? ;x (not loud music obv)
|
Get so tired that the only thing you'll be able to do is drop on the bed and drool all over the place.
|
Play soothing music while you go to sleep, it helps to distract you from the ringing. The second option would be just sleep when you feel really tired... while watching TV, you wouldn't even notice that you have fallen asleep yourself.
|
If you turn on your television without cable, ie white noise, it makes tinnitus disappear.
So you can either sleep with tinnitus or white noise!
|
|
Thank you for the suggestions so far keep them coming. Going to make a list of all of them and try them out.
|
I've found the best way to deal with tinnitus is to have something distract you from it its most noticeable when there is no sound, Ive had it since childhood and I've always dealt with it by having something else to focus on
most of the suggestions other people made should work. sleeping with in-ear headphones playing music, or going to bed with the tv on and watching something until I pass out is what I did as kid
|
Yes its common I have it and it can be terrible at times. It is very true that the more you focus on it the worse it gets. When it gets me I take a benedryl and try to go back to sleep.

I think generally this is the best, and perhaps the worst advice at the same time.
Tinnitus can, for some, be temporary - but it's no secret that many will have to live with this condition for the rest of their lifes. I get that high pitch noise now and again, but it always goes away after a minute or up to a couple of hours.
Now I am speaking from an entirely unscientistic point of view, but I think that the music thing is a great way to help you sleep. Soft ambient-ish music on low volume on preferrably speakers would probably do wonders for you. However if what you are experiencing is not yet chronic, I would suggest that you let your ears rest as much as possible. Which means no music and no computers or other electronic devices powered on while you sleep. It's always good to keep in mind that the most damaging sounds are the ones that we cannot hear (ie. the computer).
Again, I have no source or scientific proof to back me up (I'm sure there is, but I'm sure you're capable of looking it up on your own) and I would suggest you contact a doctor again if it doesn't go away on its own.
Good luck!

Melatonine can help you sleep in a safe and natural way but it wont remove the tinnitis. Just *prey* that theres something causing it cause there are several cases of idiopatic tinnitis that last a lifetime.
Edited cause it said CANT -_-

I would try some random tricks like:
(Ear pressure) Put your nose in the middle of your closed fist through your thumb and index finger so that your nostrils are 100% "sealed" against your skin ("ok" sign into "upwards fist"). Then blow air through your nose without allowing it to escape through your nose. It will pop your ears with minor pressure and that can stabilize your systems.
Tinnitus is a reaction to sickly loud music, so you shouldn't try to overstress your hearing ability with music now. Instead use like... something that makes your tired if you never get rid of it any other way.
EDIT: By the way, I'm more like what you would call "magic doctor". I kind of know weird things about human body after experimental studies and I believe in Jesus. I just hope you get fixed :D.
|
Ear plugs do nothing, since it's mental noise. I've had it since I was young and you just get used to it. The rainymood/white noise is probably best, there's also a link for the mp3 of it somewhere.
|
go to your doctor and try to get a prescription for Rohypnol... aka roofies from your friendly, local drug dealer. I believe its legitimate use is actually for insomnia. good luck.
|
there is a connection between antioxidants and tinnitus, so keep that in mind when making your daily diet choices =D
|
I've been getting short stints of it also in the past 6 months, but thankfully only lasting for an hour or so.. As a musician by career, its a pretty significant thing if it starts getting worse for me, there goes my job. This xmas, im trying to find some really really good earplugs and hoping that + taking more precaution around loud situations will help
|
I always keep watching something when i fell asleep. Hides that annoying sound from tinnitus

I think I may have the same thing too, but it never really bothered me at all. I just try and ignore it, and that seems to work for me.

Listen to some high volume bw tanks sieging.

Take it very seriously. One of my best friends had his entire life change as he suddenly found himself hearing high pitched noises preventing him from sleep. His was supposedly untreatable and has been going for more than a year. His ears hurt at every party, he needs to take antidepressants and sleeping pills and goes to a different doctor every 2 months, trying every possible solution.
I hope it just goes away, it's a lot more annoying than you think.
|
I get these if i use computer and listen to music/movies/series whole day, for few days. What helps, at least for me is to have a 2-3 day break from computer and keep volume of sounds surrounding me to a minimum (AKA rest in silent atmosphere for few days). Definitely not recommending listening to music or putting a fan next to you while you sleep.

Go to the local drug store and buy cold and flu medicine. Read what symptoms it treats, you want something that will clear your sinuses. The reason is that often ear problems are caused by sinus problems first. You just want to flush everything out and 'open' the tubes or w.e they are called in your ears. Spicy hot food, ginger tea, stuff like that will help. Don't try to stick anything in your ear.
These things worked for me when I was sick and had this problem.
Having really long hot showers helped a lot too and just gave some reprieve.
Do you feel pressure in your ears at all?
|
Maybe your inner ear has some problem. I got the same symton, and plus my ear hurt. Turned out I have to do an operation to fix. Try another doctor. The more something close to your head has problem, the more dangerous it is.
|
go to an ENT surgeon and/or find an otoneurologist
|
It has been said before but I would like to empathize it once again - stay away from all sorts of loud noises for a considerable time(preferably forever). No loud mp3/headset close to the ears, wear earplugs when you are in loud environments etc. Tinnitus is usually temporarily but if not taken serious it can become permanent and then you will have to live with this for the rest of your life.
|
Stop listening to music loudly and hopefully the ringing will go away.
|
|
I prescribe sex and a minimum of 8 beers per night. You will sleep like a baby.
|
its god telling you to stop maphacking
i had tinnitus in my right ear for about a week but it went away. just hope it goes away or it is easily fixable
edit:
and try to avoid loud noises and headphones

Honcast on a laptop next to bed. I swear, breakycpk knocks me out like a baby. I've always had trouble sleeping, but with his voice and the HONsounds in the background, I get sedated like a donkey shot with an elephant tranquilizer.
But seriously, low-volume music or an audio book is soothing and could help you ignore the sound you hear. Try it out.
|
Have you tried benzodiazepines?
A nice dose of Xanax or Valium will fix you right up.

This works with some versions of tinnitus, but what can also aid in reducing the symptoms is white noise (rainymood, etc); either way, if the symptoms keep occuring, see a doctor.
|
My first two thoughts were maybe try taking sleeping pills for a few nights and see if that helps just zonk you out regardless of the annoyance, or listen to quiet/soft music.
|
Music definitely helps in this situation, I am quite sure.
Wish you would play sc2 and show them how it's done by the way!
|
Chances are it's "only" caused by some form of physical/mental stress. I would suggest that you try to relax more if that could be the case. Sadly this includes not playing too much SC etc. And yeah I guess it will be kinda hard to really relax with that...
|
I have had that for a long time. It only happens when I think about it, and the more I think about it the louder it gets.
I'm guessing eventually your brain will just recognize it as a normal sound that is not worth registering and you will not notice it until you think about it again like me.
I think any kind of guessing will just lead to a self-fulfilled prophecy. I used to think it only happened when I was near electronics, but 1: that makes no sense, and 2: because I thought that, I would think about it every time I was near electronics (and if I didn't, I wouldn't be cognisant that it wasn't).
Try reading until you fall asleep or something, I guess.

Then blow air through your nose without allowing it to escape through your nose. That is the most awkward way to pinch your nose ever... Why not just pinch your nose without making a fist?
|
Well, you'll get used to it pretty quickly, if it's not temporary.
You need to hear something calming music or something on your headphones to block out the tinnitus, but it might just keep you awake even better.

TL;dr - Loud high pitched noise, can't sleep. Suggestions? i noticed that i can hear high pitch noises since i was a little kid. Most of the time it only come when im in a super quite environment (or have my noise canceling headphone on and play nothing). The best way is to do something and forget about the noise. In case of sleeping, go fucking do something until you completely exaushted and fall into sleep OR listen to some soft music.
I would recommend Yiruma piano. look it up for 3-4 album of his, they are soft enough that you should be able to forget
|
You're canadian aren't you? Weed fixes my tinnitus (I'm a drummer) and puts me right to sleep.
|
Avoid stimulation. I usually look up a half hour long video of white noise (e.g. a rain storm) and listen to that while I try to sleep.
P.S. Happy birthday!

The regular "push the sides hard with two fingers" may hurt if the nose isn't 100% clean or if it has been damaged by winter or something.

You will sleep better if you come back to starcraft. That is all.

Question / update: Why should I stay away from headphones? even if at a very low volume? I was thinking of getting some headphones to block a particularly annoying noise (my computer) and put on low volume/gentle music.
The last couple days or so have mostly been spent on quiet study in a silent room with no electronic devices to distract me. Seemed like it was helping last night but now it's still a constant thing to deal with. So far I don't think using any other sound to distract me is going to work, t.v. on or off I can hear it pretty acutely at all times. Being able to take my mind off it sometimes with reading and studying helps, however it usually comes back and can make concentrating on it difficult.
Obv I'm just going to see another doctor soon and try to see a specialist, because I thought it was getting better some time in the middle of the night last night as I sat awake. But, that definitely wasn't the case. ;p
|
You don't have to avoid headphones all together, just loud music etc... Sometimes the sound of tinnitus occurs at the frequencies that are "dying". Basically the sound you hear is the dying sounds of the nerves you are losing due to hearing loss or damage. It'll last for a little while until you completely lose the ability to hear at those frequencies. Don't get too worried, it's not as bad as it sounds. Losing a little bit of hearing is actually a natural occurrence as you age, but you want to preserve the rest of your hearing by avoiding really loud or damaging noises.
|
Well I heard that people generally can't hear high pitched noises as they get older. So if this is the sound of those nerves dying, WTF DIE ALREADY I don't care if I can't hear this particular pitch again. It's super high pitched fuuuuuuuuuuu-
|
Damn, every time I read this thread my ears ring like crazy. Stop reminding me, man! If I don't think about it, I don't hear it.
|
most commonly this is due to eardrum pressure, sure it could be tinnitus too, but most likely it's just earwax or something blocking your eardrum so that it makes a beeping noise.

In case you still suffer Tinnitus Testie, an article caught my eye about a therapy they successfully tried out on rats, a combination of sound therapy and neural therapy. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/nature09656.html
It is not yet tested on humans and not proof to work at all, as several other things, but they might start some clinical trial soon and maybe you can participate in that.
So sorry for you man
