Today, I woke up to an extremely strange email.
Subject: "Receipt No. 14534813"
My first thoughts were that it was just a spam email that I should ignore. However, being a Gmail user, having spam in my inbox is extremely uncommon (albeit not unheard of). Quickly, my thoughts changed to my PayPal or online banking account being hacked; had someone stolen my money via the internet? I became panicked. "What the hell do I do? Someone's stolen my money!". But, then, I calmed down a bit and realised I should at least read the damn email first.
So, I opened the email and gave it a quick read. The billing information listed in the email was not my address so I became instantly relieved. Thankfully, someone hadn't hacked any of my accounts. So what was this all about?
Apparently someone had paid for "1 year membership" for $119.98. Wow what the hell is this? 1 year membership to what? Why does it cost that much? Who the hell did this?
Luckily, the email contained both the website involved and the login username and password. So, intrigued, I decided to click on the website to see what it was. Lo and behold, it was some porn website(NSFW, obviously). My mind turned back to it being some sort of spam; perhaps it was just some form of advertisement they used to promote their site.
I attempted to login with the username and password that came with the email, surely it wouldn't work?
But, somehow, I managed to login successfully.
So, now, I've got access to someone's account, on some random porn website I've never heard of, that cost him $120. For some reason the person decided to register it to my email address so, other than his actual name and home address I have no actual way of contacting him to tell him his error.
What should I do? Ignore it? Keep the account for myself? Write the guy a letter to inform him (he lives in another country so that would be weird)?

Yes, finally content for teenliquid.com!

LOL.
I'll send you a packet of tissue to your mail address.
|
With his name and home adress it shouldn't be so hard finding out his phone number, get some free porn and then give his stuff back
|
o_O I'm guessing the guy has similar email address and made a mistake typing it in?
|
Haha, I'm sure the guy will get in touch with the site's support and probably manage to get it back. You should probably just enjoy it while it lasts.

I agree. Share account with community.Starting with me!

maybe its a Easter gift from one of your friends, or grandma !
|
Didnt you know? As a child on easter your receive chocolate covered eggs, but as a man, you get chocolate covered mushrooms! Happy easter!

If this is something your grandparents would even consider doing for you, you have one weird family. I'd say search him up on facebook, and post on his wall that you found his pron account.

Unless I'm missing something... the obvious answer seems to be to just contact the website? Tell them the account in question, etc. They're the ones who ultimately have power over their site to either fix these errors or provide a refund. It's not your fault, not your problem. The most you would really need to do is just make site admins aware of the problem and put it in their hands. No stalking the guy down on Facebook and sending him an awkward email required.
|
Looks like a sticky situation.
Better not rub it the wrong way.
Perhaps there is a deeper meaning.
This is really some seedy stuff.
Um... I'm out of puns. I need to get more sleep...
It would be mighty generous if you wrote a letter to that guy. Depending on your interests in this kind of material, you may or may not be interested in exploring the membership benefits before handing the account over or ignoring it completely.
On one hand, you can enjoy the benefits of a new-found acquaintance and some free material with little or no risk. On the other hand, you can ignore it and move on with your life as though this never happened. You call, good sir.

Either use it or delete the e-mail. I don't know if there are any legal problems with you using what he paid for, or if he could even track you anyway.

If it was something that wasnt as taboo as a porn account I would surely look him up and try to set it right. Maybe its easier to contact the web page in a case like this to keep it a little less personal ? I guess you could just delete the email and pretend it never happend as well.

If you retain control of the account how do you know the real owner won't accuse you of using his credit card? Best to contact the site and tell them about the error.

This is probably the best idea. Getting accused of stealing his credit card info and using it wouldn't be that fun...

Keep it! Be sure to send him a thank you letter.

Nobody is concerned it seems really strange that his e-mail was used to register? I find it a bit hard to believe he just randomly entered in your e-mail...
|
The email contained a note saying something like "If you have any problems with this transaction please contact customer services at *emailaddress*" so, based on some helpful advice from this thread, I've wrote an email detailing the situation (maybe I should have just linked them to this thread).
Hopefully they'll be able to contact the guy, either via slow mail or phone, and help him out. I'd write him a letter myself but I dunno how much it'd cost to send a letter to USA (although it can't be that much).
EDIT-
Just a note, my email address is "jimmeh@whatever.com" (obviously not whatever.com) and the username registered on the site was "JimmyTheTard". I'm guessing he just typed his email wrong? Or maybe it's someone I know playing a very expensive joke on me.
|
Actually it shouldn't be a problem, he set the username and account himself, so he can still login. You can either just ignore it, or use it;)
edit: btw, the OP says that you are a gmail user, so the "whatever.com" doesn't really help:D

anyway, you are a better man than i. i would have enjoyed that shit to the fullest.
however, other things i would come clean about. actually, i had emails beeing sent to me recently from wells fargo and other places for someone that had the same last name but different first name (same initial though). i searched facebook and using the email information, inferred her age and ended up messaging the right person. turns out she accidentally entered her email as mine for several things. i ended up forwarding them all to her and she changed them. felt good actually ^^

imo I don't think you should be in such a state of panic, instead consider how lucky you are. Through some unbelievable coincidence, you've been given 120$ worth of HD porn from one of the larger adult sites... just chill back and enjoy, there would be lots of people who would do anything for such a chance lol...
...and if your concience can't handle it, you can always give the account away to someone else who thinks he/she can handle it *wink* *wink*

They pay 120$ for porn now?

fixed.
It's hard to imagine someone doing that.
edit: And wow, the pun was actually not intended.

Lol whoops. Oh well, I guess people know my email now! Not that it was really well hidden, it's pretty easy to find so.

JimmytheTard?
It sounds like an elaborate joke lo.l.

Happy late birthday Jimmeh! I forgot to get you a gift, so I went off and bought you a porn account.

I think the best guess would be that the person who bought (lol) said pornography is very tech illiterate and decided they didn't want to reveal any personal information when registering so they put in a fake email address which happened to be our friends. Either that or the OP is setting himself up to explain to his ma why her credit cards being charged for porn.

This makes sense since who the hell buys porn if they're good with computers?

What do you do when you're met with an enormous stroke of luck/gift from god?
Post on TL blogs.

hmm seems like the best course of action would be to post the username and password

i wonder? if a bot necroes .. can we take advantage?
|
It's a next level marketing strategy by the porn company.
They send out spam mails with free porn accounts. Then when people get addicted to their porn and their memberships expire, they shell out the cash to renew.
Edit: wow didn't realize this was a necrothread
|
That's great man, it happened to me as well I've being jerking so much ahah!! but not an amount big like that. It was $35, two months.
