Then again, who's dad isn't. JKJK
But seriously, my dad is Racist to a point where I feel the need to confront him about it. Now he is not the average stereotyped racist (redneck, patriotic beyond need, etc), but sometimes he just makes me shake my head at things he says. Now hes lived in Canada for his entire life, and as far as I know there has been nothing big in his life to make him racist.
For example, yesterday evening when I was at the grocery store with my dad picking up things for dinner, he saw a few people in arabic clothing (long robes, woman had her face covered). My dad then said quietly to me "Hey, I should go over there and say 'So, how about that Osama?'." Of course I was upset that he would even think of saying such an offensive thing. He constantly makes sarcastic pokes at people who are not white (there are other people he doesn't make fun of as often, but still). He says "When I am at an airport and I see someone in a turban I get a little nervous" and "Theres too many immigrants taking the jobs that Canadians should get" among other things. The most often racist thing I hear from him though is his imitation of the call-center employees that have heavy Arabic/Indian/Asian accents. I know they can get annoying, but there is no need for racism.
This is simply appalling to me. Even though every person in this world is a little racist, there is no proper reason to be this bad. I want to confront my dad about this racism, and tell him how he should not say or even think some of these things, but I have a very hard time confronting people who have authority over me. I wish there was something I could do to stop him from being so racist, but every time I try to talk to him about it, he just argues in favour of racism and we get nowhere.
Sigh.
|
Seems to me like he's the kind of guy who makes jokes under the banner of, "It's funny because it's racist!"
Are you sure he's not joking? Some people are pretty good at dead-panning, and if he doesn't ever actually go out and act on the jokes, what's the problem?
You're his family, so he likely feels comfortable to share his idle thoughts with you, regardless of how good or bad they are.

what i dont get is why you don't just let him be the way he is. the idea of being "racist' is fucking retarded. people just have stereotypes is all, and trying ot "correct it" as as about as productive as talking to a wall.
its people that look at others and condescend about something that he or she does that ends up causing problems today.
for instance i am the biggest racist in the entire world. i routinely flip off people of a different race and refer to caucasian people as a word commonly used to refer to things you eat with cheese. Come at me bro. Will it do anything except just get everybody pissed off? Highly unlikely. Do something more productive and get on with your lives and everybody will be happier, instead of making problems.
Now, if your dad is actually going up and being a disturbance to people, thats an issue, but that doesn't seem to be the problem here so theres nothing to worry about.
|
Sounds like he's just trying to be funny
If it really offends you that much then maybe you should talk to him about it.
My dad, and pretty much every dad I know makes jokes like this all the time >.>
|
Just say: "Shut up Dad" every time he says something like that. He'll eventually stop doing it; around you at least.
It's extremely hard to change someone's mind away from racism, it's a long term siege/persistence fight, rather than giving that person a major one time epiphany and they're cured of it magically.
My grandfather said the n-word once, that was a neat experience. Was the original limerick of: Catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollers let him go - replace the modern tiger with...well you know. He didn't mean it offensively, that's just how that song was way back when.

As much as I disagree with the majority of this post (moreso the approach than the content, I guess), the last line that I bolded is dead on. I'm with him on this one.
I agree that your dad's behavior is quite inappropriate and racist, and based on the Osama remark, uninformed too. Obviously just because someone is Muslim doesn't mean they have any affiliation to Osama (Duh). While all this may be true, in the end, as long as he's not harming anyone, I don't feel it's too bad to just let him be.
|
I just don't see the need to make fun of another person just because they have a different skin colour/accent/clothing style. There is no point to racism, and that is why it makes me upset. People make fun of different people just because they want to, and while people have the freedom to think what they want, Racism should not be something you even joke about.
Off topic: It seems whenever I try to predict replies to my post, i get the exact opposite of what I predicted.

sorry, but... your dad is an asshole.
|
I agree with you, OP, but it's just not a battle you can win. Taking someone who has racist tendencies for years and years (I'm assuming your dad is like at least 35 or something older) and talking to them about it for 5 minutes isn't going to change that. The best you can hope for is that it becomes less and less apparent as future generations grow up.
So yeah, although you're totally 100% making sense in terms of it being stupid and wrong, it's as Caller was saying, like talking to a wall. The best you can do is to ask him to not say such things around you, or simply call him out on things he says that aren't factual. Calling him out on his OPINION is going to get you nowhere.

Lighten up man, it seems you have a chronic case of, "I'm going to feel offended /for/ these people, whether they care or not!" entrenched in your bones. Everyone jokes, makes offhand comments, and yes, makes fun of one another - is it really worth the portion of your life it requires to go out of your way to be offended for someone else?
Now, if they're genuinely upset I can understand taking the defensive stance. The problem arises in that you only address comments shared in private, between family members.

"When I am at an airport and I see someone in a turban I get a little nervous"
Who the fuck doesn't?
Most things we fear are exaggerated yet most would be (a little) nervous from seeing Arabs boarding a plane just like a lot of people worry about turbulence once airborne even though it's extremely unlikely to cause a crash.
"Theres too many immigrants taking the jobs that Canadians should get" was imo the only racist comment made by your dad that you told us about.
EDIT: Still, that last one did paint him as a nationalistic racist douche whom I hope you won't turn out as.
EDIT2: I guess my point was that being an honest dick who makes racist, sexist and anti-semitic jokes doesn't make you a racist
|
Haven't you said this same thing couple times before already? (Japan Tsunami case? or smthn)
Too bad tho. Should be pretty embarrassing to go to the town with him if he shoots comments like that.
|
You said he was sarcastic? Thus making him not a racist. If he was genuine about it, then yes, he is a racist. But if he's just fooling around, you know, being "sarcastic", you need to re-attach your balls and harden up.
Btw, how do the blog ratings work?
|
No one hijacks a plane while wearing a turban, ever. The guy wearing the turban is probably the least likely guy to do anything at all.
Anyway, his beliefs can never transfer to you, because you understand what it means and want no part of it.

My point wasn't that Arabs are dangerous. My point is that when Arabs with bombs are all over the news then it's only dishonest to say that terrorism doesn't cross your mind when you see an Arab guy on your plane.

Older people weren't brainwashed by numerous multikulti organizations and weren't living in globalized world as our generation, so yea, it's pretty natural they think this way and I can assure you there's nothing you can do about it when they've been thinking this way for 40/50 years. If it really offends you, just go and tell him, if you say he's not some hardcore rasist I see no reason why he wouldn't stop talking about it infront of you.
I don't really want to go into this topic, but if he says that when he sees people at turbans at airports and gets little nervous, it's perfectly rational and natural behaviour in consideration of previous experience. Imagine you are bitten by a dog. Next time (and pretty much every time in future) you will be more cautious when playing/meeting with a dog, even though it's completely different dog/breed.
I'm sad that there's growing hate (well not hate, but kind of hostility) towards korean things in my region. Hyundai started factory here and since the beginning it's been nothing but problems. They didn't adhere to our laws of ecology, working there is pretty much slavery (well, probably normal from asian point of view) and generally, hell, even their korean managers can't behave at a golf course. Everytime I mention I'd love to visit/study in Korea in future, my family don't understand at all :/

Your way of thinking is definitely a way that I would like people to think. Racist jokes enforce racism.
Plus, inappropriate jokes always makes me laugh and they wouldn't be inappropriate if everyone thought they were funny.

That leads to the last paragraph that some people seem to be skipping. I have trouble confronting people who have authority over me. Its not that I can't state my opinion to him, it is that whenever I do, he always has something to counter my opinion and nothing gets done.

Well comparing Fat-people jokes to Racist jokes doesn't always work. Obese people are obese because they let themselves get that way, while people of different races have no control over their skin colour/culture.
If someone choses to let themselves become obese, then fine, they made that choice knowing they will probably be made fun of. However, people didn't choose to be what race they are, and making fun of someone because of they stereotypes of their race isn't fair.

I am Asian myself living in a predominately white country.
I have been made fun of in more ways you can imagine. But I will admit that I also laugh at jokes made about Jews, black people, Germans, Americans, Rednecks, spanish people, well frankly the list goes on.
As long as he does not bother anyone with his jokes then it doesn't matter to me, however if you mind it(therefore he bothers you) then feel free to speak up about it, it is your dad.
Stereotypical jokes can be fun as long as noone is present whom it might offend(Did I write that right?). It is however disgusting if people do it in front of people to whom it may concern.
Edit: Ever watch a black/colored person do Standup comedy in a predominately white country?Half the jokes are stereotypical, guess what, its golden comedy most of the time. However there should be borders as always.

That is pretty light hearted stuff, not agreeable necessarily, but no real cause for you to react so strongly. I don't really agree with the argument about immigrants taking jobs from natives (especially in Britain where half the people who complain are unemployed/wouldn't do the jobs done by Poles/middle eastern immigrants) but I can understand that it is frustrating, like people who whine about balance in video games. Same logic.
When you meet British/ Scottish nationalists who insist that wogs (old racist expression, not sure how common outside of UK) can't run businesses and can't understand modern culture, and that they dilute mainstream culture (such an ambiguous argument lol), then you can start to get a little concerned. They're very common in UK and Scotland right now unfortunately.
Just sounds like your dad is part of an older generation who held different views and never really had to meet the groups of people they were encouraged to be suspicious of by the media.

:D don't mean to overly psycho-analyze or anything foolish like that, and living in texas, I know exactly what you mean about feeling awkward around racism. Really though, nothing your dad said is really very racist... It's pretty normal to identify with your "own" culture than someone elses.
I feel you feel this way because you really haven't been around true racism that much... That's a good thing :D Half of my neighbors still, after the birth certificate, still don't believe he was born in the US. I don't even dare repeat the things I heard during the last election. I also know plenty of white people who's best friends are black and routinely use the word "nigga" and it's not even the slightest bit racist. Maybe my experience simply comes from Houston being such a diverse place, to the point to where a fear of being racism can sometimes even be percieved as rascism and while knowing nothing, I somewhat feel like your just afraid of thinking you might be racist if you find his jokes funny.
But then, I suppose if it's bothering you enough to make a blog about it, you really should sit down and have a talk with your dad... Maybe not even necessarily about the "jokes" but something closer to the heart of what he actually feels. Understanding trumps all or some shit :D

Don't be ignorant and make assumptions.
|
Yeah I'd have to agree with much of the sentiment here that you should just let it be. My dad says much worse then this on a regular basis, to the point where my family says something to him EVERY time he makes an offhand comment like that.
I've personally given up as I've realized my dad doesn't want to stop making these remarks, and I'm certainly not going to be the person to change his mind. At this point I've actually come to enjoy the remarks, as like most people said, my dad never acts on or goes out of his way to make sure the people he's talking about knows he's saying it.
I'll just assume you're somewhere in your late teens-mid 20s like most of us here on TL, and I can tell you that our parent's seem like they'll be the last generation to carry this type of latent racism. Obviously racism is always going to exist, and I along with everyone else would be lying if we said we never once made a discriminatory/racist/sexist/omfgwtfbbq remark, but our generation seems to be the first to realize people aren't that different from each other.
Also just to comment OP on your remark regarding obese people, I thought I remembered reading something about obesity being genetic for some people, maybe not in the context you're referring to, but if it is genetic then obesity would fall under the same umbrella. Good chance I'm not correct, but figured it'd be worth mentioning just in case

That's... not that racist.
If he told one of them "hey, where's Osama" that would be racist. But honestly even my really PC History teacher makes those sort of comments occasionally. Heck, yesterday my friend and I were joking about the estudious indian stereotype, and about how all the indians in my APUS class pronounce Woodrow Wilson Voodrow Vilson. Sure, it's mildly "racistishy" but just really a joke.
Heck, look at the T Mobile Ads.

I see no racism. It could just be joking and feigning ignorance and generalizing for the sake of humor. Or it could be actual ignorance. But where's the racism?
That is unless when you say he argues for racism he is saying something like "x race is superior to y race in terms of z" where z is something considered inherent and fundamental to humans.

Before we are Hindus, Muslims, Christians or anything like that, before we are asian, afroamerican, white and all that - we are HUMANS.
People need to understand this and stop harming each other in the name of nonsense like e.g different appearance.
Having said that, I think there isn`t anything wrong with making racist jokes, as long as they aren`t a result of racist beliefs/opinions, aren`t judgemental, mocking or done with any ill intentions.
However, I believe that when one encounters manifestations of real racism, one needs to be forthcoming and direct without overcaring about consequences. Though, one shouldn`t blame racists for being racist, judge them for this or try to forcibly impose one`s own beliefs on a racist person, one should express one`s position and beliefs about it, strip the illusions of reason behind racism like one would strip bandages from a mummy and act whenever racism becomes an expression of injustice.

She got pregnant at 17, married the father and then divorced him, doesn't work at all and lives off welfare and child support while living in a house owned by a friend. Her excuse for not working is that she has to take care of her kid but her kid is almost 5 years old now, the only job she's ever had is working at Wendy's. Everytime I see her I want to punch her in the face, it wouldn't be so bad if she didn't act like she is hot shit and deserves all she gets and more. I live in a predominantly black neighborhood and I've never encountered anyone who is as much of a leech on society as she is.

ya, shit talk about non-white people being on welfare is hilarious (at least, when it happens where i'm from), cause in my province, immigrants all go to school, and welfare is 99.9999% seasonal-working white hicks

As far as the original topic you said you have talked to your dad and he just makes racist counterarguments. Are his arguments actively supporting racist beliefs, or is he making those kind of jokes because he thinks they are funny?

Like people have been saying, it's counterproductive to try to fix someone's actions when he himself doesn't see what's wrong. The best option I can give you is this: accept your father for who he is whatever what he does (sounds corny I know, but he's still family). You have to understand that he grew up in a different generation, and he doesn't necessarily agree with today's standards. As far as the concern you have for his influence on you goes, I wouldn't worry a single bit. According to numerous number of studies, peers have a much stronger impact on your character than your family does.
But I wouldn't necessarily call your dad a racist. Maybe ignorant and lacking empathy.

DON'T DO THIS. Seems pretty disrespectful of your dad, no matter what views he hold or jokes he makes. Doesn't really work out in the long run. The better alternative is keep silent for like 3secs or look at him semi-sternly.

Your dad's jokes aren't an air born disease or anything. You seem to really be offended by racial jokes, so you would have to make a conscious effort to make jokes like your dad makes. You've outgrown the impressionable era in your youth, I don't think that his jokes will affect your views/opinions on other races. You're being a bit over dramatic imho.

Going to disagree completely, do do it, and no its not "disrespectful".
If your father can joke about (or legitimately assume) that arab people are going to be saddened by osamas death, and that you should provoke them, you can tell your dad to shut up, that is definitely an appropriate time.
I'd follow up with calling him a coward, and remark upon the fact that he would never tell those people in person what he just told you.

Ok that's a little racist - anyone who subscribes to Adolf Eichmanns views is messed up.
OP your dad sounds like a humorous guy moreso than a racist. My father loves to make terrible imitations of Dell technical support and it brings our family together for a great laugh at the dinner table sometimes. Might not be you flavor of humor it seems, so just dont respond to your Dad and he won't make unfunny jokes to you.

Why are you so serious about it? I think it is really funny. My dad used to be a communist (hmm... still is perhaps?) and wanted revolution. He also thought that all religious people are retarded. He clearly doesn't like arabs, somalis and romanians (he tells romanians to fuck off when they beg for money :D), but doesn't have problems with other people (such as asian people). I guess he has some personal issues with somalis since they almost literally took his job so i guess it makes sense to hate them (all though i don't know the full story behind this job taking thingy). I'm not making this shit up.
But seriously... you should respect your dads opinion and don't try to tell him what to think if doesn't really agree with your arguments (that's brainwashing).

Funny "racist" father times:
Alright so when I was in Grade 12 we had this grad dinner thing at a local town hall. Halfway through said dinner was a showpeice sort of thing, where members of my class would perform various things, one girl played piano, some hot chicks lip synched to some old song and a bunch of the hippies played some hippy music while dressed up in funky clothing. It was really just something to watch while conversing.
Now I lived in a very small, rural town and there is almost zero racial diversity here but the only black person in the school was dressed up as a tiger (?) and was playing some sort of bongo drums for the hippy band. As the hippies started to play their song I half heard my Dad say "There's a tiger on the drums!" (He was sitting pretty far from me - it was a big table.) I just stared at him bewildered and said "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?" really loudly, stopping all conversation at our table of 10 or so people.
My Dad stared back at me with a half shameful half really confused look and I asked him again what said and he mumbled "... there's a tiger on the drums....?"
Of course then I realized how stupid I was and had a big "OHHHHHHHHH" moment and it took a couple of seconds for the rest of them to get it but when they did oh boy was the joke ever on me hahah and I have never felt stupider.
But later that night my parents won the raffle for the all expenses paid cruise so it all worked out.
tl;dr don't call your father racist unless you want them to win a cruise.

You're not too sensitive corvette. Good on you for not liking what your dad does. It's the racists who always try to blow everything off as a "joke" and let this type of shit slowly creep up in society. A lot of the people in here calling you emo, etc are exactly that type. They think as long as they're the first ones to start casting stones and telling others to chill that makes them right.
It's the same technique they used to use to oppress and silence women. Oh, why are you bitching so much? Why so sensitive? It's just a joke. It's just a little ass grab. Just a little comment about your clothes etc. Why so worked up?
Same shit, different day.

So how old are you? I would like to know that because the older you are the more independent you can be from your dad. And thats an issue here.

I'm just wondering which part of Canada you're from. In the cities/suburbs, nobody is straight up racist, but then almost everyone's a closet racist. But I find that when I travel out to the rural areas, when I go camping during the summers, a lot of Canadians are pretty blatantly racist. I remember going to an outlet mall 3 hours outside of Toronto and I can see the difference in the service given between the Caucasian customers and the Chinese/Koreans customers.
|
I don't understand the problem. Everyone (Who isn't a hard ass) has laughed at Jew jokes and made some before. Most of my friends make fun of their own race (Aboriginal, Asian, White, Jewish, etc) and I poke fun at them via racial jokes, and no one gives a fuck.
If someone does indeed appear to get upset or more sensitive to things such as race and racism, I will tone it down and try to be more tasteful. I do not consider myself to be racist (Racism is the belief that there are inherent differences in people's traits and capacities which are entirely due to their race, however defined, and which consequently justify those people being treated differently, both socially and legally. Alternatively, racism is the practice of certain group/s of people being treated differently, which is then justified by recourse to racial sterotyping or pseudo-science. woo wikipedia) in the slightest. If anything, I simply make note that in my experiences a lot of the stereotypes people accociate with being racist tend to be true, eg a lot of black people I know play basketball but also seem to be somewhat on the slow side mentally, a lot of aboriginal people smoke and/or are alcoholic, so on and so forth. As long as you don't act upon the stereotypes obviously when you are meeting someone, I see no problem with taking note of things such as these.

Wow, I don't see any of this as racism except the 'immigrants are taking our jobs' thing. Everyone makes jokes at other peoples' expense. Like others have said, people makes yo momma or fat people jokes all the time. Making a joke about a race doesn't make you a racist imo, actually holding beliefs that the race in question is somehow inferior makes you a racist. Also, I find your statement about fat people choosing to be that way obeseist - a vast majority may have caused their own issues, but some have major issues which cause it.
edit: If you really want to hear about racism you should listen to my boss. He straight up says 'niggers' all the time and today had a conversation about how he's not a nigger because he cleans his shit up and does a good job(he's a construction contractor). That's racism to me, making some stereotypical jokes isn't.

I don't think he is honestly serious about the things he says, I've always considered those kind of comments jokes, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at them. I don't think they are any worse than a mom joke or fat person joke or anything like that. If he actually confronts these people and legitimately tells them this kind of stuff to their face then I think it's a problem. Until then, I think you are taking this too seriously. Replace fat jokes with sexist jokes and it doesn't change much. The comparison wasn't the point of my post. The point was that they are often joked about and laughed at, whether the stereotype is true or not. Unless it becomes harassment, I think you are overreacting and just need to let it go.

Most times somebody is the "victim" of a joke whether it is fat , old, short or ugly people. Should we stop telling all of these jokes so as not to offend a demographic?
I have muslim friends who tell great self depreciating jokes and then go on to rib me as a white. They aren't racist, quite the opposite, its a sign of maturity that we can take it. It opens our eyes to the differences and helps us tolerate them.
If it really bothers you and you think he crossed some line then speak to him about it. Posting a blog about it may salve the concious a bit but it has little practical value.
It's because of political correctness that the world has "waitrons" instead of waiters and waitresses, "holiday" trees instead of Christmas trees and so on. If your dads comments stem from ignorance, correct him. If its you being too PC, then lighten up, I want my waitresses and Christmas trees back!

Although I am asian myself, I sort of think it is funny that a full-grown man is saying things like that.
I would say, as long as he doesn't act on his racism, directly affecting people, leave him be.
Everyone's bit racist.
|
Only you know how serious he's being, but these sound like totally mild instances of joking around and that you need to toughen up a bit.
Oversensitivity is a flaw in a character and you should seek to stamp it out of yourself, because its pathetic.
|
Enjoying racist humor has no correlation of actually being racist. Does your dad ever take action to harm or offend people of other races? From what your dad says, it's pretty clear that he's the racist humor kind of guy, because I don't see actual racist people phrasing it like he does.

Most things we fear are exaggerated yet most would be (a little) nervous from seeing Arabs boarding a plane just like a lot of people worry about turbulence once airborne even though it's extremely unlikely to cause a crash. EDIT2: I guess my point was that being an honest dick who makes racist, sexist and anti-semitic jokes doesn't make you a racist SERIOUSLY?.... so you got to get a little nervous when you see : Spanish ppl on an airpot (you know, they would be ETA's members), or people from central america, they might be involved in maras, or Italians or japaneses they are probably members of a maffia. South american are drugs dealears... this "war against terrorism" shit pisses me off so much, is just the american excuse for invading a country for no reason, and most ppl belive this shit, and end up making stupid comments about Arabs like "When I am at an airport and I see someone in a turban I get a little nervous"...
Honestly, I feel like suicide bombers would be smart enough to specifically NOT wear clothing that would attract attention / cause suspicion... for me, seeing a turban = k this guy definitely isn't a terrorist (not that that's my actual thought process XD).

I am going to side with the majority of the posts in this thread - which states that you are insanely sensitive about this topic eventhough your dad is just joking around. Its a form of sarcasm. You are 18 and this naive? Really?
|
You just sound easily offended, i'm pretty sure hes just joking around with you
|
Making fun of people from another culture is fine for me. Like saying; "they look like clowns in those outfits" or whatever and I think it's pretty harmless.
Having the political view that immigrants are bad is also acceptable for me but this depends on how well articulated this opinion is.
But then again to never be cool with people because they are different, like the constant puns or whatever would probably be to much for me as well.
|
I actually laughed at some of those things. I don't think your dad is a racist it sounds to me that he is just joking but of course that is impossible to tell over the internet, although you could be misinterpreting his tone as well.
I don't consider it to be a big problem because hes probably always going to be like that, it is probably to late to change his views on those kinds of things and as long as he isn't being overtly racist I would leave the issue alone. You could stir up a hornets nest if you aren't careful.
Take care hope you sort it out with your dad, or learn to live with it (everyone has their faults)

If you want to confront your dad, confront him. If you aren't going to confront him, then don't. I really do not see the whole point of you posting this blog just to inform us that you are confronting your Dad over his "racism".
But you post this blog anyway, and when people start calling you naive and overly sensitive (which judging from this blog you most definitely are), you can't take it and start banning people from your blog. If this is what you're like, I'd much rather hang out with your Dad instead of you, and I'm Asian.
Do I think racist jokes and wisecracks are harmless? No, I actually don't. But when you say "there's no proper reason to be this bad" I can't agree with you anymore.

Interesting blog, and some very interesting (slash ridiculous/immature/ignorant) responses.
To OP: Like others have said, damage is minimal, mostly stuck in your family environment, which makes it more your problem, rather than a systemic one. For the others saying it's just a joke... I like to think a good joke doesn't have to resort on bagging minorities (yaknow, those groups that cop enough shit in their lives already?). People generally grow out of that garbage after school finishes.
I remember confronting my dad about some racist viewpoints he held. He's an approachable person though, so it wasn't a big deal. I just said to him straight away: "Dad, that's pretty racist", and gave him an accompanying look of disgust.
I don't know if you could make that work or not. Like with the Osama gibe, you could just say: "Dad, that's really stupid, not all Muslims are terrorists." Try combat his irrationality with evidence and reality.

Sounds like you're young and got brainwashed by all the political correctness bullcrap they teach you in school/TV. IMO EVERYONE is a racist... it's just a matter of how racist they are. Don't spout the generic "we're all the same on the inside" line that they feed you in school/kid's books/TV.
It's almost as bad as that "Appearance don't matter at all, only the inside matter" line Disney/tv/books try to feed people.

Sheesh, who are you trying to score points from with your cynical views? In your opinion, everyone is a racist, but you don't even back it up with supporting evidence. Rather you just denounce it as brainwashing, political correctness, etc.
I suppose if everyone's a racist, then it's all good then, yeah? Let's just continue to be racist. Of course, not all racism is equal (guess who's on top?), but if everyone's racist then... what?
And I laugh at your criticism of schools and books. No, you don't sound like a propagandist or preacher at all...

Hmm... racism... Where do I start...
I strongly believe that your dad and his way of THINKING doesn't ruin anyone's life unless the hearer breaks from within after your father brings out some strong thoughts and opinions for people to hear.
In the case of racism I think that ACTIONS speak loudest. The actual choices you make based on your "knowledge" are what matter, imho.
See what I did there? It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses an eye (or a tear).

Well once you get your own stuff going, you can invite him to your home and 1. have discussion with him or 2. give him a warning that you A. gonna (insert word for a violent act) if he doesnt stop being lame or B that you will never see him again if he doesnt stop being lame
You cant dictate the thoughts of another human, but you can even out the inbalance that his jokes have created or you can prevent the inbalance to exist.
Most important is just do what you feel is the right thing.

You'd threaten violence against your own father? Stay classy Denmark.
How about talking to him? That is taking action you know.. holding conversation... Wtf kids these days. How did you guys get past kindergarten with social manners and interactions... wt...fwwaaawwwk?

Stereotypes != Racism
Seriously, this drives me crazy. A stereotype is grouping people up, the way your dad (jokingly) group muslims with OBL. That's not racist.
Racist is the belief that one group is inherently inferior/superior to another, or that one race should be mistreated by society or yourself, etc.

dont try to change yuor dad

Do you not think such stereotyping can lead to prejudice, discrimination, bigotry... racism?
It's one thing to stereotype Muslims as having brown/olive skin... it's another thing to stereotype them all as terrorists.

neither of those are racist.
they are discriminatory and ignorant. but i see no racism. muslim isn't even a race.
here's an example of racism. "white people are superior to black people because black people are genetically and culturally inferior."

Eh, substitute 'Muslim' for 'Arab/Middle Eastern', but correction noted.
Racism is a type of discrimination.

Don't know where you got this idea. Racism is a generalization of a race, which can be good or bad. That is all it is.
And yes, everyone is racist. It's hardcoded into humans to note differences and to make generalizations. And by everyone I don't just mean white people damnit :3
Anyway, racism doesn't always have to be wrong. Some dog races are inherently more loyal, agressive or prone to certain personalities than others. Is it not just vanity to think we'd be any different?

I think you're assuming your Dad has bad intent towards foreigners. I think he's just joking around. My Dad does the same thing, but I'm just like "Whatever."
|
My parents do this too. I really couldn't ask for better parents honestly, but some of the stuff they say makes me cringe just as much as OP. My mother always talks about being the N of the house, and my dad told a joke at a family/relatives get together about it being renamed "The Black House." Everybody but me laughed in approval.

Everyone's a racist. I fucking hate zergs and I think Z is EEembaHH
edit: I just lol'd HARD at whoever said 'a) threaten with violence to ur dad' ROFLMAO. ...yo dad stfu or ima beat yo ass ok

E-mail him some some Islamic death threats from a fake e-mail account... Worked on that Alexandra Wallace chick.

I recently attended a number of lectures on the anthropological theory of differences between racism and ethnocentric discrimination.
Stereotyping can very well be racist if the stereotype itsself makes racist distinctions; to announce that all black/hispanic/caucasian people are boorish and lack intelligence would be a racist generalisation - that is to say, a stereotype based purely on race. Conversely, to announce that all muslims (islam being a religion, rather than a race) are violent would be a cultural/sectarian distinction, and is likely more an ethnologic discrimination than a racial one.
I know it seems like a purely academic thing, but they really are quite different.

My dad is also insanely racist but he did grow up in a shitty neighborhood, was the only white guy on his college basketball team, and was a cop for 13 years working in terrible areas of nyc. So I guess I can kind of tell where hes coming from, but still...

My dad jokes around like this all the time. It's one of the few ways we're able to bond

They didn't have the internet when they grew up, they have to use other ways to get their racism out
