So, I’ve been having flashbacks to Microsoft Word back when there used to be a little paperclip man who’d tell me what I had to do. “Hey, it looks like you’re writing a letter,” he’d say. I’d sigh and close him and moments later he’d be back, “Hey, it looks like you don’t like me. Why don’t you love Clippy?”
Honestly, he always seemed like he was just a bit too smug; whose idea was it to give him eyebrows? It was only marginally better than the idea to give him sound.
So, all these acid-flashbacks to Microsoft’s least-lovable attempt to make the “help” command accessible got me thinking: why can’t SC2 have an assistant like Clippy? If we did, what would it be like?
Clippy: Admittedly, I’d very likely get in some degree of legal trouble for my plan to straight-port Clippy directly into SC2. I mean, on the face of things he might be helpful; he could suggest all kinds of useful things, from build orders to ensuring you don’t get supply blocked. Maybe he’d simply tell you to keep building SCVs so you didn’t get lost.
Of course, once you factor in Clippy’s general level of ignorance, it’s fairly easy to see why he wouldn’t work out. It never looked like I was writing a letter, Clippy, I was eight years old. It looked like I was writing shit.
Honest Marine: The honest Marine knows what he does best isn’t strategy. He’s a simple, down-to-earth kind of guy. He’s got a gun; if he sees a zergling, he’ll shoot it. If not, he’ll probably go to a rave, dance for a while, get off his face on stimpacks. As a result, his advice isn’t what you’d call tactically versatile.
He’s never going to advise mech, because mech-play isn’t manly enough. He’ll also advise you to research stim as soon as possible, but you’ll probably want to ignore that; the last thing he needs is more stims.
Remorseless Probe:
Another prospective replacement for Clippy would be Remorseless Probe. I’ve been thinking about what kind of Probe would rush directly into an enemy base and drop a mess-load of cannons. He’d brave zerglings and zealots, dodging in and out between buildings, dropping manner pylons.
He’s a cold-blooded killer, he doesn’t believe in making excuses for anyone. You’re going to win, and you’re going to win his way. Of course, if you try to play a longer game, he’ll make fun of you, cancel your expansions, and probably call you a bitch. He’s a choice for the cheese-happy Protoss player.
Tastosis:
Tastosis will always offer sound advice, it’s just the kind of advice you usually won’t want to hear. If you’re a zerg player, you should probably consider building soooo many banelings.
Seriously though, have you considered getting more ahead? I think you might be ahead now. Honestly, you shouldn’t push now.
Take another base. Build some more drones. Get some more ahead. Are you building DTs? I hate DTs.
In an inversion of normal understandings, Tasteless and Artosis are wearing Bert & Ernie’s clothes. I’m not sure why, I think this was different when I started…
Detective Overlord: I love when a scout overlord tells me exactly what I want to know. He drifts out over the enemy base, gets a glimpse and then tells me all about it. Minutes later, when I haven’t seen in in ages, Detective Overlord can deduce what’s happening inside that unscouted base.
He’s a genius, and all you need to do is listen to exactly what he tells you to do, and execute it perfectly.
Admittedly, it’s an imperfect arrangement. You’ll have to learn Zerg. I think this says,
Once you eliminate all the impossibles, take whatever you’ve got left and attack him right in his improbables
Detective Overlord's hat and pipe differentiate him from normal overlords.

I'll make a template in the next few minutes, first I have to pitch my reality TV show:

Excellent blog. I remember always switching clippy with the dog back in middle school because the dog knew his shit and clippy was a jackass. Of course if they had remorseless probe, I would have used that one instead. Cannon rush the shit out of that letter.
that's just awesome! loved the overlord...kinda reminded me of day's overlord imitation would be funny if you really have that overlord around and sometimes you see just seans head popping up randomly on screen and make his sounds

This is superb. The bits about Clippy and his goddamned letter formatting rings so true. When I read the overlord's speech bubble, I almost fell out of my chair.

I like your app. Could you tell us where the default install location is? I tried searching for the .wav files and could not find them. Also searched for sc2assistant but it only came up with the zip file, not the install location.

Hi I believe you should be able to unpack the ZIP file into any folder anywhere.. (perhaps it needs permissions to execute). All the files required should be inside the .zip file, and should just be unpacked together, you will probably need to create a folder for it somewhere. I tested it off a random folder in the desktop and a folder in the default documents labelled /AHK.. you can then just click to run the main file which is sc2Assistantv1_0z.exe using a shortcut or directly from the folder itself.
note.. this app, only talks to you through your sound card, at the predetermined interval, you wont see detective overlord over your screen, or the talk boxes, but you can record and listen to any messages you like with any app that creates .wav files.

The problem is that Zerg does not really work in roman letters. There are like 20 different ways "Kreeeeee" could be pronounced, all with profoundly different meanings, and that is not even taking in "Kreeeee" or "Kreeeeeee"

Researchers frequently converge on the same idea at roughly the same time. Famous examples include the light bulb (Edison and Swann), telephone (Bell and Gray), integrated circuit (Kilby and Noyce), calculus (Newton and Leibniz), periodic table (Mendeleyev and Meyer), telegraph (Morse, Henry, Cooke and Wheatstone), telescope (Hans Lippershey, Drebbel, Fontana, Jansen, Metius and Galileo – each claiming they invented it in 1608 or 1609), and certain facets of the theory of relativity (Einstein and Poincaré). Some historians and philosophers of science believe convergence is the rule rather than the exception
Being the first to come up with something doesn't invalidate someone else's later, independent creation.

You're kidding right? His original post suggest that the whole framework for his idea came to him on his own surmise and whims, when it's clearly documented and originated elsewhere, 2 MONTHS before this did. Had it been a tribute to Blizzard's ORIGINAL WORK, it would of been different. Again, SirJolt pays no dues where credit is due. Shame.

What do you mean "you're kidding"? You really can't conceive of the possibility that two people independently came up with the same joke? The fact that it's been up on Blizzard's site doesn't mean that SirJolt saw it there, you're just assuming he did, and that's not really fair.

This is by far the best post in this thread.
I think there needs to be some kind of turtle inspired assistant. For the kind of player who thinks. 'Quick I might be getting cheesed, I'll build a forge on 7 food and 100 cannons and then move out when I'm maxed on 1 base carriers.'

What's happened here is that I definitely saw something Blizzard did, then tried to pass it off as my own and just hoped that people on TL don't really keep up with Blizzard news. It had seemed like such a good plan too.
