EDIT: Part 2 is here http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=231706
So as some of you guys may know, I spent this last weekend at MLG Columbus translating for the Korean players at MLG Columbus. It was an amazing experience, and what made it even more amazing was all the close interaction with the staff members and of course, interacting with the Korean players. I can’t thank all of them (both the players and the MLG staff) enough, so I thought the best way to thank them all was to share my experiences with all of you so you can see how amazing the MLG Staff are and telling them bits of their story (aka how I made their life difficult) and the story of the Koreans players. MLG Columbus was amazing and I’m definitely looking forward to Anaheim at this point!
Also I do apologize for the lack of pictures making this a HUGE wall of text. I don't have a camera so
So, one of the questions people asked me the most was how I got this opportunity, especially since I’m not exactly known for my SC2 knowledge since I’ve only started following SC2 since TSL, which puts me behind on the knowledge of the Korean players too. Anyway, Hot_Bid asked the TL translators if any of us were going to Columbus for MLG and if we were going if we could help out as translators. I wasn’t thinking of going before I heard of this opportunity, but I did remember Lemonwalrus asking me if I was going to Columbus since he was going and he was driving. Hotel fees would be split + travel cost would be relatively low, so after talking with Lee a bit, I decided to make the trip. Lemonwalrus booked everything and we were ready to go!
So I spent some time catching up with SC2, learning all the names of the players and especially the unit names in Korean (Since Korean unit names are actual translations now I needed to know how Blizzard translated them). Anyway, it came Thursday morning and it was go time!
Day 0
So Thursday morning Lemonwalrus and LDK pick me up and we grab a quick breakfast and take off. We stop at McDonalds for lunch at Lemonwalrus’s insistence (“we’re going to a fucking Mcdonalds”) and he kept driving on looking for gas as we were running extremely low on gas. We luckily find a mcdonalds in the middle of nowhere in Indiana (attached to a shell!) and we head over there and grab a quick meal. We talk about starcraft a bit while we’re there and a guy comes up to us and asks if we were going to MLG Columbus. He turned out to be CDRdude on Teamliquid and he had stopped at McDonalds to download podcasts and he overheard us say the word “Zerg” and there was two nerdy guys and an asian so he just assumed it lol
We keep talking and keep driving EXCEPT we suddenly realize that our cell phone time is an hour ahead. We were now in EST and the three of us couldn’t figure out that Columbus was on a different time zone. I was supposed to arrive at 3:30 so because of that I arrive at Crowne Plaza Hotel just in time instead of having an hour leeway. And we didn’t even have to speed!
I walk in the lobby and I see Hot_bid and TLO and I stare at TLO for a while since I forgot what I wanted to say ahaha. The other TL staff are there and we talk for a bit and we head off to the airport to pick up the players with Lee, Josh (Clutch8), Alyssa, the camera guy (sorry I forgot your name T_T) and Wax and R1ch.
We arrive at the airport and we have some downtime since the Korean players were supposed to arrive at 4:30. I was thinking of making signs but instead later Wax and I just decided to use some meme to make them noticeable (we used the Kong Ganji picture). We attracted a few people who were around including the guy who tattoo’d Kong Kkajima on his leg! All the way from Italy :O
As we do this we see Idra. Mr Chae goes up to Idra and tells him that MC is his opponent. Mr Chae later reported in his twitter that Idra sighed when he heard that.
We finally find out where the players will be arriving and we move over there to baggage claim seven. There were some other people here and they joined us as we waited for the Korean players. Now there were two escalators at this area going down and we surrounded the right escalator, but the players actually went down the left so we had to move and cheer and such. Right now I’m still awkward (sorry, that’s just how it is being a UChicago student) but I do manage to introduce myself to the players as their translator for the next few days and we get on the van.
We’re on the van now and we do a quick interview. I’m sure you already heard me butcher Kiwikaki’s name on the interview (and I apologized to him in person later so it’s all okay I hope!!!!). It took a bit to get in the zone to be able to translate but my Korean was a bit shaky overall. It was also very hard to hear in the moving car but I did my best D:
We arrive at the hotel and we get the players to their rooms after the check-in process. LosirA actually managed to lock himself out of his room within 5 minutes of arriving at his room. Anyway, we all met at 7 to visit the venue as it was getting set up. They were introduced to the staff working there and Lee gave the Korean players a tour of the area. During this I realized how much I haven’t used Korean in a bit so I didn’t know how to end my sentences because I kept getting them mixed up in my head. But I think that got better as my Korean got better as the event went on.
Anyway, after we (Josh Alyssa me LosirA Moon Daniel (who is a wemade executive) MMA Mr Chae) got back from the venue we went to the burger place next to the Hotel (Max & Erma’s). July joined us halfway through, and we ordered some nachos as appetizers and got burgers (except MMA who got a pulled pork sandwich at Josh’s recommendation and he got it he was like “The meat is so shredded how do I eat this…”) Anyway the burgers were like 6 oz big and the Koreans freaked out about how big they were. They all liked the burgers and they wanted to go back later but I never had the time later to go back out to the venue to get them these burgers so I’m really sad that they didn’t get to get those burgers again ;; The relay was going on at this time and actually before I came I was planning on getting the Koreans to participate but they were really tired and they just ate so it didn’t happen. After that we bought them water from the hotel and they went to their hotel rooms. I stayed around until 11 or so since my hotel was 6 blocks away and we were going to go pick up MC so I just sat in the lobby and surfed the web.
So 11 came and Alyssa and I went to go pick up MC. We arrived and I took out my laptop and pulled up this picture and waited for MC. I saw MC and he walked right past ;;; and so I had to go get him. He was really out of it and really tired and we headed back. . I asked him about foreigners and he said that progamers in korea and outside korea are of the same level, but the skill level in Korea is much higher in terms of the ladder players. He seems very knowledgeable about foreigners and asked if Naniwa was there, and then asked if a few other players were there. He then asked if Fuzer was there cause he thought he was a funny guy cause apparently he drunk commentated.
Alyssa asked him what he did on the flight and he said he just watched movies slept and ate. This led to a discussion about a kdrama named cityhunter MC was watching and he ended up summarizing the kdrama for her. That's not something that happens often! Anyway We get back to the hotel around 12:30 ~ 1 AM and he goes to sleep. I give him my number just in case. I walk back to my hotel and that's Day 0.
Day 1
I woke up about 6 AM cause I couldn't really sleep so I was just lying down and thinking. An hour or so later MC calls me at 7 AM because he was hungry and so I walk over to the hotel. I couldn't call him back and I couldn't find him in the hotel registry (most likely due to the fact that he replaced Bomber on the hotel list). About 8 he calls me again and by then I managed to get to the 12th floor thanks to Daniel and I was talking with LosirA (all the Koreans did not sleep well cause of jetlag). I take MC and go down and take him to the breakfast buffet at Erma's. He says he likes the continental breakfast style so he ate there again the next day.
At 10 AM we meet and I talk with MC a bit and we talk about Idra a bit (he's like "Aren't American players really bm?" and I answered "Oh are you think of Idra? It's only Idra") and then it led to a discussion about Idra and then I showed them the TSL 2 Idra vs Nony game (thanks CTStalker). I also showed the video to Mr Chae before and he laughed pretty hard. The players were like "yeah that's typical of Idra" and such.
Picture of me showing the players the Idra vs Nony game, courtesy of CDRdude who was bored and so he texted me and so he was waiting for the players with me at the Lobby
I buy them muffins and drinks and stuff and then at ten-ish we head over to the venue and they warm up for a bit and then they just started browsing playxp and such. I get introduced to more MLG staff including Sundance (This could actually have been the day before but my memory is hazy) and the commentators like DJWheat and Day9. Day9 is literally my favorite personality I met at the event. He is amazing to talk to IRL ahaha. I also meet Torch and Torch actually went and talked to LosirA and told LosirA that if he wants to play Terran for fun it's okay. Day9 trolled Dignitas team by pressing the arrow keys when the players were playing and Naniwa just gives him a glare. I heard later that Naniwa did that to some other players though. Day9 was hopping around like a fairy between keyboards and pressing their arrow keys while the players were playing. MC was playing MMA off race (MC played Terran and MMA played Protoss) during that time and Day9 pressed on MC's keyboard and MC just laughed but Day9 was very disappoined when he hopped over to MMA's comp cause MMA did not have arrow keys on his keyboard.
Anyway, I noticed that a lot of people complained that there was a lot of downtime between matches. But most of the downtime was used for setting up time for Korean players who are really really sensitive about stuff. MMA and MC I believe just used default drivers but LosirA used a very specific version of a logitech driver and Moon had to uninstall every razer mouse driver before he could use his mouse properly so they just set him up on his own machine later (and LosirA did the same the very last day). They also had to tweak settings before every game to perfection and that took time.
There was actually supposed to be a showmatch around 12 or 1:30 I believe which got canned. It was supposed to be a BO3 2 v 2 event between Koreans and other players. That was a shame. We let the players do whatever and Moon and Daniel left and then I asked the players if they wanted to eat something and they said yes and so I asked Lee where I should take them and he recommended the North Market and so I took them there.
From there the players (MC LosirA and MMA) were pretty overwhelmed by the number of choices there. I ran into a starcraft 2 team who convened there for lunch and one of them (Peter) recommended a few places and the players liked the Pho place and so the players ate Pho and some spring rolls and grabbed Jeni's Ice cream (for LosirA and myself), Vitamin Water (for MMA) and Diet Coke (MC). We head back in time for the fanmeeting. Wax got his forehead signed by Moon during the fan meeting o_o;
I guess this is a good place to talk about the overall atmosphere. Constant requests for pictures and signatures and that was fine for Day 1 but in the later Days I had to bring the players to their next location and they constantly got bombarded and I felt terrible for refusing them so that the players can get to the next place on time because there were so many requests. Not including the fanmeetings I think at least 100 people asked for signature/pictures for EACH player over the course of the event when we were on the move o_o;
Anyway around 4 PMish Korean players start getting really tired. When MC said he's in terrible condition you better believe it: By the time he was in his hotel room and I left it was like 1 AM. He called me at 7 so at most he got six hours of sleep and from the sound of it he's been up way before and combine that with all that airplane bullshit + running around and such. I talked to him after the Idra match and he was like "Augh, my condition sucks, I kept missing the minimap". MMA literally passed out between the matches in the player lounge for like an hour and LosirA kept trying to find times to go to sleep between the matches for like the last 6 hours or so. Games started at 5 and after the game with Idra I asked Alyssa and she got him a can of Nos. MC ripped through the rest of his matches after that.
Thankfully Daniel was there to take care of Moon for the most part so I mostly had to concentrate on LosirA MMA and MC (CSN was mostly taking care of July). But yeah they were getting really really sleepy as the games went on. We all (including Moon and Daniel) eat dinner and wait for the last few games and MMA was crashing in between games at the pro lounge and MC was pretty good with the energy drink.
Also in Moon vs Naniwa: Apparently Moon needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of game 1 and he started slipping after that. He wanted to go to the bathroom inbetween games but he wasn't able to... so he had to keep playing and so that's that story.
And then LosirA vs Incontrol happened.
The LosirA Keyboard problem
So I think this was the main source of the complains about "too much downtime between matches". Anyway, the issue was pretty much LosirA's keyboard which started malfunctioning. Incontrol lagging wasn't actually Incontrol lagging but it was LosirA's keyboard malfunctioning (since his H key would stop working after that). In the first match, they paused and then LosirA's keyboard eventually stopped working completely during that pause. They called me at this point so I had to run from the feature station (was helping MMA) and ran to the main stage. Anyway, since LosirA could not continue after that pause there was a regame. LosirA said there needed to be a regame but his opponent would need to agree with it and Incontrol was a great sport about it and actually gave LosirA the option of a rematch even though he did not have to since it was LosirA's keyboard for some reason malfunctioning at the main stage (it had worked perfectly fine in the feature station and normal computers around, which is why we also swapped computers during game 3 of that match just in case it was the computer). Incontrol was such a great sport throughout this entire debacle and he had all the right to demand a forfeit but chose to go with the regame. So thank you for being such a baller
Anyway, without the details: Incontrol's "lag" was never actually incontrol but it was Losira's comp fucking up. Everytime after the lag Losira's H key would stop working. The first game: Losira's keyboard COMPLETELY stopped working and that's why there was a regame. Losira obviously wanted a regame but he wanted to get Incontrol's permission first, and Incontrol basically said that he thought he was ahead, and so he would accept a forfeit, or a regame. Losira obviously takes the regame, and his H key also stopped working in the middle of the regame but he said that he didn't say anything cause he was winning. More issues with that, and after the second game we pretty much told him we can't stop because his H key stopped working after that and he agreed, but in the middle of the second match Losira's keyboard COMPLETELY stopped working and he was playing mouse only. It actually was not a mistranslation in the interview. LosirA actually said he only played with a mouse after a given point in the game because his keyboard flopped completely during the game. After that Losira thought it was the computer so we quickly swapped the computer but it wasn't (see the lag screen? all that meant was that Losira's shit stopped working) and luckily for LosirA there wasn't a problem other than the H key issue (so he just made hatcheries with mouse). He just said he made all his hatcheries with his mouse. Losira then did a long interview but that was fine cause I knew what he was going to say so I just had to confirm what he was going to say about it.
SOOOO what happened after is that MC finished his game before Losira's second game started so Losira was using MC's keyboard during this time. I also ran into Kennigit and I told him the story and I was like "I'm sure there has to be someone here with a QSENN keyboard that Losira could use...." and Kennigit was like "yeah there has to be" and he was completely and utterly right -- he actually ran into GosiTerran who apparently just got the QSENN keyboard today, who agreed to let Losira use it for the remainder of the tournament! I actually didn't know GosiTerran was SixJax.Major who played with LosirA later since I thought his name was SixJax.Memories or something like that so LosirA didnt know he was playing against the person who lent him the keyboard later. But thanks a lot, GosiTerran, for being a great sport and letting esports happen by lending LosirA your keyboard
Anyway we were walking back after that and Losira felt really bad about the entire debacle so he wanted to say like "I'm sorry for this entire debacle and so to pay the fans back I will play Terran in my next match for a little show..." and then later on decided against it. I told him if he really wants to do it to say it AFTER he wins and gets the interview and do it suddenly so the commentators would expect nothing and freak out like mad. MC then commented like "I could have beaten Tyler with Terran" (The next day I talk to Tyler and he asks me if MC had said anything about him and I was like "... do you really want to hear it" and he says yes so I tell him what MC said and Tyler was like "well he's mistaken". I then told Tyler that MC was counting on him to beat IdrA and Tyler said that "if I beat IdrA he owes me dinner". I told MC later and he was like "why should I buy him dinner it's for his own benefit". Shame this story didn't develop). We get back and the players go back to sleep and get ready for the next day.
To be continued....

Great read! I liked the TL shirt!

milkis so qt. glad to hear the losira thing worked out. also
"Game 2 happened and no, it actually was not a mistranslation in the interview. Great read! Good job translating during the MLG. You made a lot of people rofl irl when you accidentally used english instead of korean =p

It's fun to see people talk about places like Max and Erma's (which has some pretty decent burgers) and North Market (which is a fun place to go to). It sounds like you had a blast. I wish I didn't have a massive exam on Thursday that I had to study for through the weekend. T_T

Thanks for the recount! Was really interesting to learn about how the Korean players were.
Lol at Day9 messing with the players.

Great read! cant wait for the rest. Reading this I couldn't help but think how impossible it would have been for the Korean players if you were not there to help them.

this was an AMAZING READ, thank you so much! i love hearing about everything behind the scenes...esp. all the food parts hahaha
|
lol awesome writeup. Losira so cute locking himself out :3 T_T
|
Great great read. Thanks for helping me procrastinate ;D
edit: i still think MC sounds sorta like a cocky asshole. But the others sound fun! Major looking like a nicer guy.
|
LOL, I saw you in the TL shirt translating, and remembered someone mentioned in the PL update that you were going to MLG, and I though "wonder if that is milkis?" Turns out it was. I was thinking about saying hi, but the opportunity never presented its self, and I though it was a little weird to be hunting down someone who may be someone I have seen on the internet.
|
T'hanksfor sharing, I'm eagerly waiting for part 2 :D
|
lol at MMA passing out in between matches :D
|
Cool write up. Looking forward to the write up of the next few days.
|
Amazing read thanks. what i got out of this was that the koreans was super tired on day 1. Probably that was why MC lost to idra 2-0.
Also, Major has alot of hate from people at TL. But the guy is actually a nice guy in RL. Props to him to allow Losira to use his keyboard.
|
Awesome, been waiting for a such an article with a focus on the Korean perspective (the real heroes of MLG Colombus). Great insight onto all the little details and especially how much their condition was affected by travel in pool play.
|
Thanks a lot for this nice read! Waiting for part 2!
|
Just finished reading, awesome! I'm kinda new to TL, whats his new icon mean?
|
I wish I could be an english to english translator for team liquid some day. I guess one can only dream of such a prestigious position. Anyways, thanks for the good read.
|
I enjoyed reading it, can't wait for the next part! I actually didn't know Major was GosiTerran. Thanks for all the info that we didn't see, it's really interesting!

Thanks, you did a great job and you're cute <3 Awesome event and writeup.

loved the read

I expected MC to seem like less of an asshole in person, but everytime I read one of these behind the scene things about him he just sounds like a dick.

I cannot wait for part 2. Thank you very much for describing the conditions that the koreans were in. They sounded absolutely exhausted with MMA dropping off and Losira trying to find places to sleep...
Also, props to Incontrol for being amazingly manner. And thank you SO MUCH for being an amazing host to the koreans!

hahaha, the icon cracked me up. good read and you did great at mlg

YOU THE MAN MILKIS
I must now find some milkis and try it out.

Milkis so cool
I didn't know you looked like that though! For some reason I imagined you as a skinnyish dude, not sort of chubby. Great read and props for being such a cool dude and translating at MLG!

Thanks for the write up. Looking forward to more of it!

Oftentimes when I hear stuff like MC saying he's "in terrible condition" and Losira complaining about his keyboard, I often think that it's some excuse for how poorly they played when in reality, the players are actually trying to make the best out of a shitty scenario.
Those of us sitting at home enjoying the stream and bitching about downtime don't realize there's so much happening behind the scenes at large conventions. Thx for giving us fpov on the inner workings of the event; I'm looking forward to your next post
|
terrific read o_0 good thing mlg has Nos as a sponsor looking forward to the rest
|
awesome to hear the story behind the scenes can't wait for part 2 as for koreans having trouble, i think they should plan their flight a day earlier to get in better conditions as it is sounds pretty bad
|
Thanks for the blog
also lol, day9 being day9 xd
|
really enjoyed reading the behind the scenes action. especially regarding the korean players.
any1 who isnt retarded could see in the booth cams that the koreans looked completely dead the first day. (but u couldnt say anything without some1 making some racist remarks about their eye shapes and blahblahblah) but they looked completely DEAD tired.
But i knew that thje community would RAGE when MC said he lost to idra cause he was simply over-tired. and when we read that MC travelled all day/night and followed that with 3-4 hours sleep, its easy to understand that they really were dead tired... but i wasnt going to try to convice people that MC was just tellingh the truth.. cause people didnt wanna read/hear excuses from MC... even if they were true.
Also really cool reading the Losira stuff.
Keep posting these, they are awsome.

Milkis is the man.
I was one of the refs (black hat, short asian fellow) and I wanted to thank you for all your help, I only speak for myself (as I'm sure everyone else at MLG is very much thankful for your translating), but you always were around when I needed you thus by the end of the tournament, most of the feature/main stage staff could kor-english our way into explaining what we needed from the players since we just followed your lead. ^___^ I'm not sure if I thanked you enough at the Tournament, since it was quite hectic the entire time but I'll leave this reply and pm you my thanks ^^;
Thanks again and I'll definitely fellow your blogs in the future. Great write up!
|
Amazing write up, 5 stars. Can't wait to hear MMA's take on the command centre debacle and the Idra gg.
|
I never realized the translator was Milkis until one of the last interviews with MMA. Thanks so much, you did a great job, and great blog ^_^

nice read milkis, you were great all weekend its nice to get an inside look on how everything was at MLG.

Awesome read,and awesome job! :D

Awesome article, man. Good work at MLG. Can't wait for more!

Wow, quite a jam-packed weekend and it's not even done yet! That's pretty awesome though, seems very exciting. Can't wait to read the rest of it.
Nice icon.

Behind the scenes stories like this are so awesome because they bring out the Koreans' personalities in a cool way. What they thought about the american food, what drinks they chose, jetlag stuff, laughing at TSL2, Losira locking himself out lol, etc. And even an honorary mention for our national hero, Fuzer! Thanks for writing this.
|
great writeup looking forward to the next installment. Pretty cool that you got to be the main translator for MLG just due to your status and a translator here at TL
|
Awesome writeup - thanks a ton!! Just curious, do you know who won the offrace match between MC & MMA??
|
Gotta give props to Kennigit and Major for getting that keyboard to Losira. Losira may be good, but not mouse-only good.
Awesome of Incontrol for the re-game, though I wouldn't have blamed him if he wanted a win against Losira. (But he'd probably be torn to shreds by everyone doing it though.)
|
MMA not having arrow keys? Haha what a badass.
You should be proud of yourself for having served tens of thousands of spectators. Give yourself a million pats on the back.

Man, that was a good read. First blog I make it all the way through. Was looking for some inside information and this was really informative
So many fun moments, and I have even more respect for the koreans after reading this. They sound like really cool guys.

I think the MC and Nos drink is the 'best' advertisement Nos could have hoped for during MLG. Drink Nos, finish third in MLG!
|
Great read. Thanks for the post. Tyler really needs to stop criticizing MC and look at his play style for pointers. MC is by far the best Toss in the world.
|
I want to learn korean. Then I can associate with famous progamers and be awesome....

That aside, an excellent blog.

I think SlayerS_Alicia would disagree with you :0
Being a translator sounds like such a rough job though. Good to see you had fun while keeping the players happy.
|
Good read!!! cant wait for the rest ^^
|
Dude, that is a super detailed account, You put a ton of effort into this man, thank you.
|
Thanks for sharing man Also lol at your en-en translation skills
|
Damn Major, I knew u would be a bad ass in real life! U almost caught up with Idra
|
Wow if MMA, Losira and MC were dealing with jetlag/sleeping issues that much I can only imagine what July went through since he had to go through the open bracket. And it's a shame Incontrol and Losira couldn't have a perfect Bo3, I was really looking forward to that.
Great job at MLG though
|
Great story.
A lot of the players are good sport (Incontrol & Major). All of you guys made MLG so great!
Looking forward to read the 2nd part.
|
quite frankly MC's terran would probably roll tyler
|
Great read. You are the man Milkis!

Noooooooooooo! I'll be waiting impatiently for part 2...
Honestly though, you did a great job this past weekend. Congrats on getting to do it again at Anaheim, and thanks for the blog!
|
Awesome read and insight. Also goes to show how nice certain players really are.
|
lol. fucking awesome man. after reading the whole thing, i can understand what went on back stage and with Korean players especially. inControl, thanks for being such a sport and gentleman during the whole debacle and really you earned my respect as a gamer (i thought you were a douche) love the story and can't wait for the part 2
|
Jelly I am. Ah, to dream of a life of esports.
|
|
that was really nice of Incontrol. And of Major.
funny how losira with mouse only plays better than most players
|
Nestea said in an interview that he thought losira's terran might be better than his zerg so that was a shame we didn't get to see it
|
You lucky son of a bitch! Hahaha
Well at least this motivates me to keep learning korean, so maybe I can be in your position in the future!
You did a really good job as well, so props to you for that. ^^

Get this man a camera now!!!!

Awesome read, I eagerly await the conclusion. Hopefully you can include something about how they felt about the entire weekend seeing as it was their first time out of the country for a couple of them (not necessarily about the competition more about American food and their experience here, the event so fourth). Anyways 5 stars I enjoyed it!
|
Ah Milkis, the one guy who I can't help but think of every time I walk past a vending machine in Korea (no homo).
But seriously, this is a great read. Looking forward to the next part.
|
wow thanks for sharing. nice icon!
|
btw, is there a video somewhere of milkis' english-english translating?
|
Awesome job man. Thanks for your hard work for sharing the experiences!
On a side note, I can't believe Losira beat Incontrol playing mouse only for half a game. What a baller.

Awesome article. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I really enjoyed reading it. You helped clear up a lot of the stuff regarding Losira's keyboard.
|
That made me laugh so hard. Thanks for the awesome read.
|
Great read Milkis! I can't wait to read about the rest of the days! Also, thanks for being a badass translator all weekend long :3 . Edit: Whoa, I totally didn't realize the English->English icon, that's awesome haha!

Great read Kelly :D. I hope you get some more support pm like the last time you did in GSL rofl. Also kudos for Major and incontrol for being awesome.

epicccccc write up!!! Incontrol and gositerran are freaking champs. end of story.

I couldn't find that video about IdrA :/
|
Great read!
Loved the insight about Gosi's philanthropy ^^
|
LoL How can you play mouse only? Losira is a beast.
Now I have to watch game 2 Losira vs Incontrol again to see how he played that game. Without hotkeys? Without a-moving? WHAT??
|
Mc makes me to feel proud.
|
Thanks for the writeup, always interesting to read stuff like this. Looking forward to the next part.
|
Awesome post. Can't wait for more. You were AMAZING at MLG.
|
Thank you so much for blogging about your experiences... I really love hearing the transparency of what the players are actually thinking... I can only wish that I would have actually attended. Waiting patiently for the next post <3
|
Excellent write up, waiting impatiently for part 2!
Hoping to get the inside scoop of MMA and Losira especially!

Looks like u had fun. Got anything from MLG for ur efforts? (not money)
Cant wait for the next story.

Thanks for the great writeup!
Team ONE having lunch with the cool Korean Pros. Apparently they love Pho as much as I do:
From left to right -> Peter (news writer), Namhcir, Losira, Fireflash (co-manager), MMA, MC, Rumcake (manager), Dasuki, Gatored, and linko.
All 3 pros and of course Milkis are awesome and super friendly.

So good, thanks for taking the time to translate and to do this write up! This was so well written, I love the little details the most, like what drinks the players ordered. Can't wait until part two!

Can't wait for part 2!!!!!
This was really fun to read and a great insight into some of the players, but also to the nuttiness of the event itself. Really cool of InControl to be a sport and also princess for loaning his keyboard. I know when I used to travel for competitions (very minor sports stuff) little bits of hospitality like that always made memories.
Thank you for the write up Milkis!
|
Need Part 2 omg, this is too good @_@

awesome blog, can't wait for the rest
wouldda been funny to see losira play terran, MC too but idk if he could have beaten tyler in tvp
good job with all the translating over the weekend

Great writeup man- thanks for all the translating that you did- it was great. Im sure it was difficult because you were put on the spot always =]. Good luck in college.

The MC comment about Fuzer is hilarious. I love that guy, so funny!
|
Thanks for providing the insider's perspective. Looking forward to part 2!
|
Cool writeup.
What happened to smiley Losira?
In the GSL he always seems like the happiest player but in this tournament he never has a smile.
|
great write-up, enjoyed every second of reading this. also LOL at milkis's new translator icon, en-en ftw!
|
If this could work out, I would really like if Koreans could get there an extra day early to work off the Jet Lag.
|
Your accidental translation at the champion ceremony had me laughing. I appreciate the enthusiasm and hard work you put in!
|
That was an awesome read I hope part 2 is just as detailed :D
|
I was at the event and I just want to say this is a great read. I really appreciate that time you took to tell about Losira keyboard and Moon taking FOREVER to get setup. I figured something was up but having a confirmation is nice. Thanks again!
|
man thanks milkis. TL.net has always big walls of texts, which i am not used to.
this was the first of them which i read completely and i really liked it!
seems like MMA, MC and LosirA were in good hands and thus were able to do so well :o
|
Really fun read and happy you had a blast! I can not thank you enough for all the translating you did!! <3 <3
Also GosiTerran is a hero for lending Losira his keyboard!
|
The more interviews I read about MC and his egotistic out look on other players(specifically non-Koreans) the more I want to punch that lil' shit in the mouth. Every other Korean spoken with in interviews or with other players have been completely manner, MC shows up and its a BM shit show.
Huge props to iNc for his sportsmanship and Major for helping out Losira.
Thanks to the Koreans that came to MLG and conducted themselves in a manner that was professional and sporting, It was a pleasure to watch.
O ya and thanks to Milkis for doing all this for the community, you sir are a true gentleman.

Thanks for all the comments so far. I'll answer a lot of your questions when I write Part 2... I don't know when that'll be since it's graduation week this week and I have a lot of work to do that piled up over the weekend T_T. I'll try to do it soon though!
But specifically.

I can tell you he is not egotistic... He's pretty confident however. As far as I can tell he does it (the comments rather) to please the fans and to create hype, since he has a very high opinion of foreign players especially Thorzain Naniwa and Idra... Just realize that what they actually say in those moments don't always reflect what they actually think. That is especially true for MC. He's a pretty nice guy outside of it.
|
great writeup on your experience!

Thanks for the writeup, sad I couldn't hang with you more than I did, you were totally cool. The event was amazing, and it's equally amazing to hear all the little stories behind it all.

Hey Milkis, thanks for sharing this in a such awesome write-up :D Can't wait for the next part!
And also good job at translating over there!

thank you for a great read.

great read, milkis be balling
|
Thank you Milkis for the write up. Very informative and clarifies a lot of things.
One small thing. IMHO when you translate you make it sound more bm than it really is. I don't know if you're trying to create tension or hype by doing so, or if it's a mistake. Regardless, you hold a lot of power as a translator and you've earned that title with hard work. Best of luck in everything you do. Congrats on graduation.

The thing about translating anything from Korean to English, you lose the layer of formality that Koreans have... the only way to capture that is to use the passive tense and it takes a lot of work to make the passive tense sound properly to still have it capture the original meaning. I have the same trouble when I translate stuff from KR -> EN even when it's written because of that so since I was interpreting I just did everything raw, which can give that impression, I think.
If you have suggestions though I'd love to hear it since it is something i've been trying to deal with for a while
|
I should have trolled you IRL and said i was QS ^^

awesome read. Great work!

That was really cool of you to step up like that btw. I thought you handled everything really professionally and knowing you are "from the community" makes it even better.
I really liked the part where you watched the TSL2 with them

fuck geoff is a baller, thats so awesome of him. I cant personally think of another gamer that would happily take a regame, after CLEARLY being ahead against his hardest opponent in his group. Thats really big of him. Youre an inspiration to everyone geoff :D

I think you did a great job.. you can't really help some of the phrases sounding more BM..such is the nature of translations. (I guess unless you wanted to enroll in some kind of translation course.)
A note about MC, I remember seeing the guy on some show on GOM with the female GSL caster, and he commented on how he puts on a sort of arrogant persona to create a bit of hype and make the games more interesting (loosely paraphrasing - it's been a while since I've actually seen the show). He might seem a bit over the top compared to the other Korean pros, but I don't think he's actually like that in person, as Milkis seems to be stating. Anyway! Great job - looking forward to the next one

Such ignorance. Props to Milkis for clearing up MC's personality (even though anyone with any observational abilities whatsoever could see that MC does what he does for show and that he's actually a nice guy). Maybe you should get punched in the mouth instead. So damn tired of these uninformed judgments of MC.

Major props to SixJax.Major for lending his keyboard.
Thanks for this article, I am really looking forward to part 2!

WOW thank you for writing this. who cares about pics when you wrote in such detail. Thank you again and can't wait for the remainder of the piece.

Looking forward to part 2. Would like to know more about Moon and July though (I know you said you weren't particularly looking after them.

Haha I didn't notice the icon first, that's a nice touch. I feed on this behind the scenes stuff, I put it in my oatmeal to sweeten it up. Thanks for writing!
|
I was so upset when I was asking Losira to sign my keyboard and you said no . But then he signed it anyways :D
|
Thank you Milkis for this very interesting read. I loved the story about MMA/MC/Losira going out to eat.
Any particular reason those three were always hanging out and Moon and July were doing their own thing? Other than them having different people there helping them while Milkis was generally with the 3 who ended up being finalists (karma? no pressure ).

Wait what, MLG didn't cover your expenses?

Amazing write up, thanks Milkis. I love the glimpse behind the scenes cause it really allows us to truly appreciate all the work it took to make this possible. Plus it's always fun hearing silly stuff about Losira and Day9
|
Thank you for everything! I'm sure that if you weren't there, the whole LosirA incident would have been much worse.
I hope you continue going to MLGs! They should seriously fly you out to each one now.

I liked the part where you started talking English to SlayerS_MMA during the champion interview. Well done my man :D.
|
Wow, MC is the Korean Idra. Probably attracts the same kind of fans. I find it funny how Idra's fans and haters have these huge debates about how one guy's bm is totally different from the other's when it's pretty apparent to everybody else that they're the same person. And if you like IdrA, why are you concerned about bm in the first place? (lol) I'm a fan of neither but I'll admit that at least the fans of both are consistent.
|
Thanks so much Milkis for all your did at Columbus :D

Nah, MC doesn't whine about balance, and he doesn't let his emotions get the better of him. And from most accounts, he's a really nice guy IRL. So nope, I don't think Idra and him are similar.

Really fascinating, so great to have someone embedded in the whole situation. Thanks so much for the detailed write up, IMO this should be featured in a liquid weekly.
|
Milkis, you've done a great job imho. I know how hard it is to interpret a foreign language (for me it's either Japanese or... English ). You must've felt a lot of pressure during the whole event, but you seemed calm and did great. Thanks for your work man, that made the Koreans feel good and gave the fans and staff an opportunity to interact.
|
Also in Moon vs Naniwa: Apparently Moon needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of game 1 and he started slipping after that. He wanted to go to the bathroom inbetween games but he wasn't able to... so he had to keep playing and so that's that story.
