(Please red the entire first post, PLEASE. Chances are I have already addressed what you are going to post)
"Hey guys, what's up! It's Quentin aka HuskyMUDKIPZ here and today I have a ____ video for you...." This is how I start almost every single one of my commentaries. I have been playing video games and recording myself in a fpview live commentary/let's play style for about a year now. My youtube channel has been growing at a pretty decent rate, I have almost 45,000 subscribers, and I have been having a lot of fun with it.
Approximately 7 months ago I started getting involved in the starcraft 2 community in a very minor way, commentating random games/streaming myself/getting involved in some actual commentating gigs both live and online. I have had a generally positive reception, I try to be strong in my opinions and I try my hardest to explain my reasoning when I make a statement like "This region of the map is good for protoss to hold for now, this is because...". I can also get very energetic and end up speaking pretty darn fast during intense battle moments. This blog is not about my commentating but about my name.
My alias/aka/persona is HuskyMUDKIPZ. This name comes from xbox live. When xbox live had the option to create a new account and receive a free month I was running through accounts. In march I tried to create a new one by the name of MUDKIPZ but it was taken. Xbox live suggested HuskyMUDKIPZ and I decided to roll with it. At this time I was doing Modern warfare 2, like almost any other person who tried to get in to the youtube commentating scene at that time, so I had no idea of the starcraft commentator HuskyStarcraft.
Fast forward to November when I purchased a new computer and starcraft 2. At this point I did have knowledge of Huskystarcraft but I didn't think I would be commentating sc2 because I was a lowly gold scrub. However at the end of december I started to branch out in to more games. One of the games I wanted to get super involved in was starcraft 2, this was mainly due to the community and entertainment I found through team liquid.
After continually casting/streaming for a few days I found that I was getting more and more and more and MORE comments/pms either asking me if I was HuskyStarcraft or accusing me of being a "copycat". I didn't really take it to seriously at the time because it was more of a hobby for me, something I was just trying for a bit.
Recently I have been trying to get a LOT more involved in the starcraft community, mainly through TL, but I feel like one thing that is really personally holding me back is my name and the constant insult that develops from that. I am not saying I am the bomb diggity when it comes to commentating, I really enjoy it and I feel like I can provide content that is entertaining and logical at the same time.
It has sadly come to the point where I feel if I want to get more professionally involved I am going to have to change my name. Personally I feel the emphasis is on the MUDKIPZ(note the caps o.o!) in my name, but people cannot see past the little Husky at the front. I really am not sure what to do at this point.
If I change my name, through dropping the Husky or changing it to something else, I am going to have to request a change on almost every single website I use. Twitter, TL, youtube, Gmail, other random forums, skype, a lot of different video games, etc. If I don't request the change then I feel like the ridicule and insult will only get worse as I try to get more evolved in the community.
I understand that you have to have a thick skin, but there is a difference between hearing "lol u r ghey" and having people dismiss you as a commentator because of a word in your name.
I suppose this has evolved in to a whine blog, but I really just do not know what to do.
Regarding HuskyStarcraft. I think he is a great shout casting commentator. I personally do not watch his stuff because I don't enjoy watching that kind of commentating but I think he does a great job bringing new people to the community and providing entertaining commentary for a lot of people every day. I am not trying to insult him in any way.
Also for those interested you can find my youtube channel via http://www.youtube.com/huskymudkipz . I mostly do minecraft and other easy to "let's play" games.

Honestly your name probably turns most people off because it sounds like HuskySC ripoff + 4chan meme. If you're really concerned with how you're perceived, you should either change it or go above and beyond to get your name out there as a serious commentator/community dude/whatever.
|
You're named after a starcraft commentator and a meme from 4chan whose heyday was sometime in 2006. Yeah, you'll probably have to change it if you want to be taken seriously.
|
I have to agree with above posters. I wouldn't consider watching your videos just because of your nickname. It's pretty damn bad. Imagine becoming a well known caster or something, people would call you huskyMUDKIPZ in real life. I can't even understand why you would want to name yourself MUDKIPZ.
|
I agree, change it to anything else. But for the love of god do not change it to something like ____Starcraft. It irks me when people have "starcraft" in their name and refer to themselves as ____StarCraft. No you are not Starcraft, the game is starcraft.

Changing your name isn't that big of a deal, just emphasise it at the start of the cast to remind others you have changed your name

I like your name .
|
I recommend xxXDeathViper420Xxx for mad cyber cred.
(regardless of the husky part I agree your name is pretty terrible and is gonna need some modification if you ever want to be taken seriously)

Pretty BM to use another casters name even if you had no idea about it. Show the REAL Husky some respect and change your nickname. It'll be easier/better for you and the community in the long run.
Btw, goodluck!

Yeah a name change would help you in the long run even if it is difficult to get all the changes done in the short run

Needs more plugging imoimo. Look at tasteless, he is the greatest commentator ever and he barely commentates games because of all the plugging he does.
Also, I can see why you would get aggro for that choice of name. Its not your fault, but internet communities usually are not exactly populated with mature and rational members of society. And I would probably change my name anyway if it was huskyMUDKIPZ I think you can do better than that, "xxXDeathViper420Xxx" seems like a good choice.

H to the uskyMUDKIPZ MuskyHUDKIPZ?

Hello huskyMUDKIPZ. I really enjoy your casting. If you want to become more professional I agree that you should change your name. Right now you are in the shadow of HuskyStarcraft which really cuts into your viewer count so i have this cool plan. You should change the husky part of your name to some kind of synonym for husky. Here are some examples.
burlyMUDKIPZ robustMUDKIPZ strappingMUDKIPZ brawnyMUDKIPZ

I think all of these names will give you the same emphasis on MUDKIPZ and also move you away from Husky. Good luck in becoming a professional.

if instead of writing this useless article you actually changed your name your problem would be solved now
|
hehe mudkipz! so funny i love 4chan too :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
|
You should change it to fudsky... F to the udsky.. fudsky. God I hate that guy.
|
friskyMUDKIPZ sounds pretty good too, them mudkips be so frisky.
|
Did you ever think the only reason you get views might be because people see the 'Husky' in your name and accidentally click your channel? I think you're wrong about which part of your name you need to get rid of. Really, you should be HuskyHusky.
|
I am not saying I am the bomb diggity when it comes to commentating, I really enjoy it and I feel like I can provide content that is entertaining and logical at the same time. You could make your name diggityMUDKIPZ, that way people wouldn't say you are ripping off anyone.
|
Why don't you just go with Quentin? HuskyMUDKIPZ will never be taken seriously.
|
|
Should change your name to Ravioli ;D!
In all reality, unfortunately, yeah, you're in quite the pickle. You will have to change your name but what have you considered of changing it to?
|
Have you ever read The Sound and the Fury? You should use Quentin.
|
Hey man, sorry about the overlap with the name and stuff, I know its annoying to be accused of things when you had nothing to do with them (besides, you and i already know that Husky is like a totally bomb name anyway).
I had to go through a name change at one point too and it wasnt very enjoyable. Even now I wish my YouTube channel had a different name, You just have to either take the plunge and start over (given, you will keep a lot of your active following) or tough it out for the end of time and always have to deal with a name you arent too jazzed about anymore.
Keep up the good work, the world could always use more gaming content !
|
Well I definitely didn't expect a comment from "the" Husky(lolwat). There isn't anything you should really feel sorry for as you had it first, but thank you for the sentiments ^^.
What kind of name change did you do? Was it a complete alias change? Also, did you have to transfer youtube channels?
Thanks for the reply ^^.
Also, I have been considering a (not so serious) name change by either dropping the Husky or changing it to another descriptive word. My intro, which has been ingrained in to my head over 500+ videos, has this flow I need to follow.

my brain just exploded at this post..i think you're baller in disguise

^ nope, it's gotta be another incarnation of Mr. "You Gotta Skate"
Yes it is quite hard to take you seriously with Husky as a prefix in your name, and a 4chan meme as the other half.

Lmao yeah other casters name + 4chan meme is not something people take seriously. Maybe Q-Man or something.

Yea the name is kinda distracting it really seems like a rip off = /
