I was headed to New York for work so I managed to stop by IPL3, IEM and MLG for a few days each~ I'm just gonna combine all the photos into this post so I don't end up spamming three separate threads. :D
Mandatory PS: Please feel free to share the photos with the rest of the community, but please don't crop my watermark away and do credit me if you use them in any articles. Thank you~
I probably have the least photos from IEM because I only went for a day and it was mostly to watch my player Edge play ;; but I guess it at least gives you an idea of how the venue was like~ very different from MLG/IPL but still nice nonetheless :D
IEM NYC took place at New York Comic Con in the Javits Center. The IEM venue itself wasn't huge but I think it was quite nicely setup. The casters booth was positioned at the very front of the IEM area where passersby can take picture of them easily, against the back of the live audience, who'll get to see them on the huge screen on the stage.
I also really liked how they had screens for every player's player cam, made watching matches really easy when the game I want to follow isn't casted.
Casters booth!
The towers were really pretty ;o

All the SC2 players play their matches on the stage! I thought that was pretty nice.

Performance wise Edge beat Elfi in his group but lost to FruitDealer and Axslav T.T I'm sure it was a great experience tho and I'm proud of the fact that he managed to qualify for the event~
Omg you have no idea how long I was waiting for you to upload your picsssss :D So freaking amazing as always ahhhh Still so sad I didn't get to see you at IPL T___T I hope you're feeling better though ~ so much traveling recently !!

Lol I appreciate the love ;; but Rachel and Anna are amazing and should definitely not be replaced (not to mention awesome personalities as well)! And Milkis is translating bonjwa ~_~

Yeah, they're great, and Milkis is fine but you're the best. Susie was excellent too.
I love the pictures, they captured some things that aren't often seen on the pro scene like the seriousness with which casters go about preparing for a cast. Apollo, wheat, doa and even catzpajamas were all focussing really intensely on the job at hand in their pics.
Omg pressure to update the IEM and MLG photos now.

Wow really nice pics again as expected! Can't wait to see the iem and mlg ones. Now I know what painuser was talking about when he said the main screens could have been bigger. Holy cow those are tiny screens and I can't see anything going on in any of the pics showing the main screens.
I think it was a mistake to have 2 first person cam view screens, because in theory it sounds good, but then you end up with 3 tiny screens that you can't see anything on. It's not worth the lost screen real estate to fit them in. Just have 1 baller main screen like last gsl finals had. That was the most amazing main screen I've seen in e-sports so far.
Solid stuff! Can't wait for the updates to appear. Also wondering if you're planning on doing a self picture. Always interesting to see the face behind the camera Edit: uhh I mean a self picture at an event...

Yeah if you don't it in the front it's hard to see anything at all especially for people like me with bad eyesight T_T

Few questions regarding the lighting - Are these handheld or tripod shots? Did you use IS lenses? What was the exposure time on things like the booth picture? What ISO were you shooting at?
I had a really hard time with the lighting at the main stage. So many different light sources and the booth lights caused a lot of shadow and highlight problems. I ended up having to shoot at ISO 1600 handheld with 1/8s or lower (IS saved me there) for a lot of my shots and the noise caused me some issues. A bigger problem was I didn't have the focal range (17-55) to actually get good composition for player shots in the booth so having to crop so much amplified my problems.
Came in here expecting some standard pictures and was blown away and how good they were. Very nice job and thank you very much. These put me right there at the event.
Wow, very nice. Thanks for sharing. Can't help but notice that in Korean stages, the player booth is right in the middle of the stage, while in foreign event the casters are. I wish they put more emphasis on the players. :-/

Looking forward to the IEM and MLG pics!
These are all handheld. I absolutely hate having anything other than my lens attached to my camera (straps included) because I feel like it just hinders my movements -_-;;;
I used the 70-200 2.8L mostly no IS. For events I generally shoot on Aperture Priority so I don't really know. Probably generally around 1/40~1/100 or so for ISO 3200. You should definitely get a long lens ;o

I think it'd be pretty sad if the purpose of me going to an amusement park is solely to take photos for someone else, I'd probably rather just have fun if I were travelling ;; but anyway I was sick so I couldn't go ^^;

I would when the other updates are here ^^

Um afaik for gomstudio player booths are on the sides the last time I was there. @_@;;
Not really. If the lighting is clean/single colour usually the colour noise isn't too bad. I've shot some concerts those get really tricky if you go too high so I usually try to stay in the 1600 range. Then again some cameras just have better sensors so you can push it a little bit more and get away with it so ^^;

Haha, true true, but I didn't mean taking pics of them as like a job, but as like taking pics like you would if you were on vacation. Kind of like how milkis was just taking random camera phone pics.

I've done as high as 3200, though it means more work in post. But Lightroom 3's noise reduction algorithms are magical :D
On some experiments I did with the Nikon D700, 6400 was actually surprisingly usable for webish sizes (like maybe to 1280 wide) after some NR tweaking.

I dunno how IPL lighting compared, but at MLGs, I've tended to use a 28-70 2.8 for the main stage and side stages (Stations A and B), the 70-200 2.8 for players in booths and zooms on the main stage, and a 50 1.4 for when I can sneak past security to take a shot of a player in a booth. The 50 1.4 was actually really good at the A and B stations too, especially since from the side, the player isn't affected by the narrow dof too much.
Plush red seats are so pretty~! Thanks for the shot! I am keeping this and posting in on my facebook! I will upload some IPL photos as soon as I get it approved. [Guy closest to the camera]
I must say now after MLG that IPL3 was more enjoyable event than MLG orlando. Maybe the most enjoyable event so far. Or maybe its just nostalgia after seeing these pretty pictures from the great event... either way, good job!

The IEM photos are good, and understandably scarce, but not a single shot of dignitas Killer? A seemingly up and coming latin american progamer deserves a little bit of attention, you know.
