Here we go again. It's time for another DotA2 blog. Did you all get to read flamewheel's blog about Anti-Mage? Amazingly in-depth blog. I know he has more coming. I'm personally hoping for a guide on Omni-Knight as it's one of my favorite support heroes.
But this blog is about going back to the basics. A lot of you might be completely new to DotA, others have played the game a few times and some might even know all of this. No matter if you're an amateur or pro, I think you will enjoy this. Also don't worry, there's keys too.
Table of Contents I. Runes II. Lanes III. The Time of Day IV. Pulling V. The Jungle VI. Rax & Towers
RunesAt the beginning of every game and every second minute (00:00, 02:00, 04:00, etc.), there will spawn one rune in one of the two rune locations. There's 5 different kind of runes in the game. It's random if they spawn in the top or bottom location, and it's random what rune will spawn. - Double damage runes increase base damage by 100% for 45 seconds
- Invisibility runes cause a hero to become invisible for up to 45 seconds (invisibility is broken if the hero makes an attack or activates a spell)
- Haste runes allow a hero to run at maximum movespeed (522) for 30 seconds, and while Hasted that hero cannot be slowed
- Regeneration runes very quickly heal a hero back up to full HP and MP. Like a salve or clarity, these break upon receiving any damage.
- Illusion runes create two illusions of a hero that can be used for scouting, extra damage, or simply confusing the enemy
Back to top LanesThere are three lanes on DotA and there are more than one way to go about the lanes. Laning and how to lane a lineup is very complicated and you need a deep understand of the game to actually do this properly, so that is something we'll go into some other time. Maybe flamewheel will write a blog about laning, maybe I will. Who knows. Anyway we have the three lanes. There's the top lane, middle lane and bottom lane. The most common way to do your laning is having a solo middle and two heroes in each of the other lanes. Middle lane is sort of even between the two sides, but the bottom lane favors the Radiant side and the top lane favors the Dire. People might even argue that the top lane favors the Dire more than the bottom lane favors the Radiant. Why? Well for starters let's talk about why one side is favored in one lane over the other. - The capability of creep pulling.
- The safety due to being close to your tower (anti-gank, easier to play defensive).
- The architecture of the forest.
- The distance between your enemy and their tower can be utilized for killing easier.
Those are kind of the four aspects of why one lane is being favored over the other. However people might argue that the architecture of the Dire forest is a lot better and nice than the Radiant forest. Also as you can see in a video further below, there are more creep pulls from the Dire forest than from the Radiant. But doing a 2-1-2 set up with the solomiddle is not the only way to do it. There are heroes in the game that can utilize the jungle very efficiently and create sort of a 1-1-2 scenario where you have to solo lanes. You could also be tri-laning a hero to get two solo lanes too, which would be a 1-1-3 scenario. Tri-laning is the most difficult way to run your setup. Tri-laning requires a tremendous amount of game understanding as it is most oftenly not just three heroes sitting in the lane at all times. One or two heroes often stand out of experience range early on, but the threat of them being there forces the enemy to play defensively, may even force them out of experience range. Also you have a good opportunity of ganking middle lane a lot while still maintaining total domination of the lane where you've been trilaning. But it's a difficult thing to do as the supports come out underleveled and kind of plays with their back against the wall, so you need to be able to recover without compromising other heroes or your job as a support (which is wards, ganking and making sure the others in your team are having the time they want to be having). Back to top The Time of DayDotA is much like real life. There's a day and night too. It's a fairly simple concept, but a lot of people don't think about it nor do they act differently in the given time of day it is. But it is actual one of the core and most important features of the game. The difference between day- and nighttime is the vision that's provided to you (pictures further down will show you the difference). The difference in sight has a huge impact to the game. Ganking in the different hours of day is very different because the enemy will be able to see you later in the gank, but he will also have an easier of escaping by juking and utilizing the trees to obstruct your vision of him. However this is a thing everybody needs to get used to and understand. Another cool feature regarding the day- and nighttime is Balanar, the Night Stalker. His 3rd spell which is a passive booster gets activated during night and he will receive a ton of positive attributes to him, such as movement speed and attack speed. An amazing and sweet feature of the game. Back to top PullingPulling is an efficient way for a support to gain a little bit of farm and you gain extra experience from it. Besides those two things, it has a few other benefits. If your lane is pushed too far ahead and you want it back, closer to your tower so it's easier gankable for you or if it's too risky to be that far ahead because you leave yourself open to get ganked. And you deny your opponent experience from the creepwave that you pull. Smart, huh? I've recorded two videoes that shows how you can pull as both Radiant and Dire. The first example in each video shows you how to stack a camp and note the time it's done at (between :51-53). You can do this for any camp and it's generally a good thing to do because you will get a few more camps to play around with which will increase your camp. However when you are pulling, you always want to stack the camps first. If you don't do it, it won't deny the whole creepwave that you're pulling in and that actually ends up pushing the lane instead of pulling it back. Important!! In certain situations you can't always get to stack (maybe they've warded your pullspot to block your camp). If so you can do the trick of doublepulling which is shown as the last example in both videoes. When you're watching the Dire video, in the second example you will notice that I don't get the ranged creep in. It's because I chose a "bad time" to pull according to where our lane was, so the ranged creep got aggro from the other opponents creeps. If you just do it as I've done it, but your lane is pushed a little further towards your opponents tower, it will work perfectly. While we're at the pulling thing, we can talk about blocking a pullcamp too. If you're too close to the spawn or have vision of the actual spawn, you will block the spawn which means no creeps will spawn. The funny - and great thing - is that because of that you can actually block spawns from spawning with a ward. This can be very useful to prevent people from having total lanecontrol who'll try to just keep stacking and pulling. Back to top The JungleThe jungle is one of the most interesting places on the DotA map. Certain heroes are designed to farm the jungle from level 1, other heroes benefit a lot from it in the mid- and lategame and some heroes just don't use it at all. What's so interesting about it is that you can center a lineup around it and make the whole farming/level aspect a lot more efficient in a lot of ways. All that stuff is a little bit deeper than what I want to go into. There's a few basic and key mechanics in the game, you have to know about the jungle. You've already seen what it is like to stack a camp and what benefits it has. To those of you who aren't aware of it, you can stack a camp up three times. Now you're thinking three times total or at the same time? At the same time is the correct answer. You can do the stacking maneuvre two times which will lead to the camp having 3 sets of neutral spawns. When they're killed off, you can start stacking again. Now.. The camps have different difficulty and spawn different creeps with different "advantages". Some creeps have a lot of HP, other camps have a lot of DPS and some are just not very strong. I've done a little addition to the minimap, so you can see where the creeps spawn and their difficulty. It's pretty easy to guess what is what. The green ones are the easy ones, yellow is medium, red is hard. But what is the blue one? It's the ancients. Ancients the strongest neutral creeps in the game and require serious business to be able to kill them - not something for a level 1-3 hero. They are also magic immune. RoshanRoshan the Immortal is the most powerful neutral creep on the whole DotA map. He is feared by everybody and only a few heroes with great farm can take him down in a one on one combat. His abilities are: - Spell Block. Roshan will block one targeted spell every 15 seconds.
- Spell Resistance. Roshan has a 75% spell resistance.
- Bash. Roshan has a 15% chance to deal 50 bonus damage and stun for 1.65 seconds on an attack.
- Slam. Roshan can slam the ground, slowing the attack speed and movement speed of units and heroes in a 250 AoE for 2 seconds on heroes, and 4 seconds on units. Slam also deals 70 damage and costs Roshan 90 mana to cast. Roshan will not cast Slam unless there are 3 or more units near him.
- Illusion prevention. Any illusion that attacks Roshan will be instantly destroyed.
- Devotion Aura. Roshan has a Devotion aura that increases his armor. The aura starts at +0.5 armor, and increases by +0.5 every 5 minutes from the first creep spawn. Roshan's aura has a maximum increase of +5 armor.
When Roshan dies, he will drop one of the most valuable items in the game: The Aegis. The Aegis will let you respawn at the point of death with full HP and full MP with a 5 second delay. It's basically an extra life. The Aegis is only alive for 10 minutes. If it's not used within those 10 minutes, it will magically disappear as Roshan respawns again (he respawn 10 minutes after his death). If you manage to kill of Roshan three times in a single game, he will start dropping more than just the Aegis. He will drop a little bit of cheese too. Haha. The cheese restores all your HP and MP instantly, but it needs to be activated. It's kind of like a mini Aegis. Back to top Rax & TowersIf you want to break down the main purpose of the game, it's all about eliminating your enemies throne. You do that by destroying towers and their main base. But it's very dependant on your lineup when and how you want to be pushing your lanes out. Different lineups require different timings and playstyles. In every lane there's three tiers of towers. The higher tier tower, the closer to their throne it is and the more gold it will give you for destroying. It will give your whole team a set amount of money if it's lasthitted by a creep, but if the last hit is done by a hero, that one hero will receive a higher amount of gold and his team will receive less. What happens when you destroy the rax? First of all, let's be clear. In every lane there's two rax, one melee and one ranged. When you destroy the rax in a lane, you gain a constant push as that lanes creeps will grown stronger for you. But also very importantly, it decreases the bounty on your creeps. Not only are the creeps harder to kill, but you also decrease the income of the enemy team. A very strong advantage at any point in the game. When the rax' are destroyed in all lanes, you will get mega creeps which are stronger than any other lanecreep. They do about 100 damage each and have a lot of HP. I have never seen a team comeback if they're up against megacreeps. Back to top

Thanks for the guide! The last time I played DotA with any success was when it was a somewhat popular vanilla WC3 map, and the current state of the game is overwhelming. I'd love to have a key.
Very nice info, and GL to everyone hoping for a key Followed you on twitter. Thanks for sharing the eternal joy and happiness that is DotA 2 with the TL community.
Awesome blog man, been following u on twitter as well (SlayersZero) hope I get to join ya in dota 2 beta soon (need a key!!!)
A shot at winning you say? Here we go. Like the blog !
Yes, I'd LOVE a key, please. :D
Good introductory blogs. It seems like you're writing a bit more frequently now?
very very helpful indeed. hoping to get a key soon but ive not been lucky with those valve's random draws :<
Great series of blog posts man, as someone new to dota this probably helps most out of all the guides.
Here's hoping I win.
Very nice guide, I like how you explained the game in a basic manner but supply's more complex information easily understood. Really good work. The videos were very nice also!
Nice writeup of the basic basics. I'd love a key, so I could reply with more insight to back it up
Nice one Robin!
Great guide! I liked the videos where you showed how to pull neutral creeps. Your guides really makes me pumped for DotA2
Articles like this make it so much easier to get into new games. I love it!
HEY! Thanks, but I want some props for my two recordings (the youtube videoes!) :D
I think positioning should be stressed from an early time. Positioning is what typically keeps a person from being okay to good, from good to great, and from great to pro, etc. It's like Macro in SC2, it should be a basic that is worked on from the very beginning so it will be a mechanical process in your head, you're always aware of your position, even when you're actually not aware of it. Too many times I've seen bad positioning throw away a lane, or even a game.
Thanks for the guide, look forward to more great stuff!
Thanks for those creep pulling videos.
I found those in particular to be really useful, makes it way easier to see and explain the concept.

Thanks for yet another good article with betakey giveaway. Not being lucky last time, I'm rolling the dice again. Good luck to all entrants.

An important aspect of DotA is Line of Sight, which like you write is affected by whether it's day or night. But one important aspect are hills. Like in Starcraft, being on cliffs or hills give a very important advantage. Since I don't have DotA2 beta, I can't say how it works in DotA2, but in HoN your hero "gives up" chasing an enemy hero if that hero enters fog. So here's a good tip for people: Use attack command into fog to avoid your hero "giving up the chase". Beware that any nearby enemy will be your new target, so be sure to only use this if the coast is clear.
Just thought I'd add some tips Also, NEED betakey
As somebody who got into DOTA through LoL, I find these guides are really handy, even though I can't play the game yet :D
Good read! There were some things that i didn't even know about, certainly some things about Roshan. I will definitely link this to my mates who have no experience in Dota, yeah you guessed it... LoL players.
Been following you on twitter for a while, keep the good stuff coming!
Awsome to see you trying to get TL into dota more now that dota2 is comming out, hopefuly we can get a nice dota comunity going here
Good and handy guide! Great job doing it
You write nice blogs

This is definately going to be a challenge. :/ Only have played LoL as any kind of MobA before.
Very well written guide I must say. Even though I have never played Dota before I have grasped the basics of the game through this. I might get started on Dota 2!
Don't really 100% agree with Flamewheel's guide on Antimage, however this is a nice introduction for new players who wants to get in to dota2.
Linked this to a mate and he's never played dota before so hopefully he'll gain some knowledge
A thing regarding creep pulling, when I'm Scourge (I don't know the equivalent in dota2) I always creep pull at x:15 and x:45 so you don't miss any creeps. Slightly different timing when you're sentinel, but it's a nice rule of thumb for me atleast
Cool guide! Hoping for a key
Bumble, you need to be more concise than this for your beginners guides. I know this is very concise already, but it needs to be more graphical than textual. The reason being is that there is a lot of information to digest on paper which funnily enough translates into very little in game.
Edit:
Also, you should highlight some of the popular hiding/juke spots in each lane.
Another nice blog, great job robin :D
Hi, just wanted to say that the guide was great and I'm sure it will help out many new players both in Dota and Dota2. Keep up the good work.
Great guide. I wonder if the feeling changed from the original to Dota2.
Thanks for the guide.
I'm a dedicated LoL player but want to transfer towards dota 2 once I get the chance and this guide is another step closer to the goal I want to achieve. Dota 2 just looks so much more fun
Thanks bro! Apreciated alot!
I would really like to learn more about what champions go into certain lanes and what the core item setup is on every type of hero.
I hope that Dota 2 will be fun as I've grown tired of LoL and its simplistic approach to the genre. Dota seems to have alot more depth and details to learn about.
Good luck to all for the keys!
Great guide on the basics!
Very nice guide for people who haven't played a lot of DoTA, or those who played but are still not so great at it.
Awesome Guide Bumblebee, what a gentleman and a scholar. I think something that is underrated is really watching the minimap, as if it's Broodwar you're playing. Especially in pub games, you have to pay attention yourself not everyone always calls missing and its a good habit to get used to.
A pretty decent guide, maybe a bit too concise, but overall decent.
Loved the blog! I'm dying to get into DotA 2. I have friends who said they'd teach me how to play. =]
Oh my gawd, good to see all these guides showing up, obvious that it will help grow the scene ^.^
Very nice, cheers

Yep. This actually can't be stressed enough, especially for new players who simply can't understand why they are being ganked and losing games, even when they are farming decently. Get it in your head that if you die, it is YOUR fault for being in the wrong place relative to your enemies' map presence.
Being constantly aware of not only your positioning, but the enemies - and the opportunities that presents - is a big part of what makes the difference between "decent" and having the potential to go pro.

very nice written guide, gl everyone
Bumblebee, you had me at "Dire" and "Radiant".
Thanks for the guide. I never realized that you could double-pull as radiant. I played dota for along time and never knew that. The guide was short and sweet -- the best way to write a guide.
Haven't ever played DotA but I've played LoL. Thanks for this guide! Explains the differences between DotA and LoL to me more!
Nice read, though I'm only doing this for the key, I kinda feel bad. I miss playing Dota with my friends, LoL and HoN are good but just... Not the same.
Thanks for the videos! They really helped with understanding the explanations
Thanks for the guide basics guides like this are useful to even veteran hon players as over the years S2 had made so many minor tweaks to the basics information like this makes me go "oh yah thats how it works in dota, I remmeber now"
Good easy read. The one thing I'm not thrilled about is going back to the 0 minute runes of DotA after the removal in HoN. That was an amazing change for pub games and, in my opinion, made the game more accessible to new players.
On November 06 2011 00:36 Senx wrote: I would really like to learn more about what champions go into certain lanes and what the core item setup is on every type of hero. ... The first thing to learn is that playable characters are called heroes in DotA and not champions. Secondly, explaining what heroes go into certain lanes is challenging. The nuances of each hero make it difficult to categorize past support, carry, and jungler while those don't explain what lane they'll go in. You need to view the two full team lineups. Thirdly, it would be a lot of work to cover the "core item setup on every type of hero" because there are over a hundred heroes. You should look up each one individually rather than one gigantic guide.
great guide for beginners.. keep up the good work ^_^
Well I've been following you through twitter and now here's a chance for me to win Dota 2 key. I'm looking forward to it!
You are right. The day/night feature is definitely a detail most of us miss to understand unless it's Balanar we are talking about.
i had to install dotalicious client again because of gamescom and played for about 2 weeks. now you keep teasing me with keys and i had to play there again. weirdly enough the cpts there want you to play trilane most of the time. in addition its very frustrating to play support in public games. help!
I'm superrr bad at DotA. I really like these. I think they help me understand a lot of things that I didn't before. Thanks for this man! Isn't pulling the easiest way to get creep farm anyways?
nice guide, good luck everyone!
Nice that will help new players a lot :D
Thank you for posting this. As silly as it sounds have have been having trouble seeing differences between Dota, LoL, and HoN and this showed that the games fundamentals are the same but with several KEY differences. It is these differences why I can finaly understand some of Dota's popularity in comparison to other similar games and I will now be checking out the game upon it's release for sure.
Cool guide
Could someone explain the key differences between the LoL jungle and the dota one? I'd be really interested since it's a mechanic that I like quite a lot in LoL
Awesome Beginners guide! <3 Dota2
I had no idea this game would be so ocmplex, actually excited to play it.
Pretty good guide, especially for people who are new to the game. I think you should touch a bit more on the laning of the game however, it's quite common to run a 2-2-1 lane, and having a solo on one of the sidelanes rather than mid. And you should definitely mention the possibility of having for example an earthshaker or a sand king just roaming and hardly laning at all to set up kills all over the map, though I guess this is most common when running a trilane, but definitely not the only way to do it.
Oh and cheese doesn't instantly restore full health/mana, it's like 2000 or 3000 hp (cant remember) and slightly less mana if I recall correctly.
Not wanting to nitpick or anything, but it's worth mentioning!
Can't wait for DotA 2 to go out ! The International tournament really made me want to play it ^^
this is a really good guide. Thanks for posting this!

I love you Bumblebee.
I've never played a moba and intend for Dota2 to be my first (no matter how nervous I can get about a hostile community =p), so I've been religiously reading and taking notes from this blog series haha =)
thank you.
Very nice guide.
In HoN people often block the creep pull by putting the ward in the forest next to the creep camp such that it is blocked and the ward cannot be counter warded, does this work/ is this done in DotA as well?

I played some Amumu, but from some very obvious and easy to understand perspectives are that stacking makes a big difference. Pulling makes a big difference too because you can kind of sustain your jungle stay longer. That all the creepspawns doesn't have one set of creeps, but different creeps can spawn there and some creeps are harder for some heroes than others. Also there's no Smite ability and there aren't a power-up like blue and red.
When you mention pulling creeps to deny them/help jungle what do you mean by stacking the camps first?
Nice guide, it's good for new people to understand the game. For me in a lesser way, because I already play the genre for a long time, but good for the newer ones nonetheless.
The Blog is really awesome Bumblebee. It explains the basics around the Map itself perfectly. But really outstanding are the pulling movies. I think it really helps some newcomers in the DotA scene when they see those pulls, to do them aswell. But i think you can put the secret shop in the jungle aswell, for the bigger.. and better items. And damn, i hope i got the lucky draw on one of the key's.
Great guide. Really nice for people who are just getting into it. Hopefully you are able to write a really indepth guide on laning, as atleast for me, it is the most interesting and one of the most interesting phases of the game. Keep it up :D Hopefully I get lucky and get a key ;p
Awesome, thanks for the post!
I'm looking forward to the laning post. I should be able to get a basic enough idea of heroes by playing bot games, but you can't really just play bot games and learn the current laning strategies. I'd like to have some idea of what they are and when they are useful (like trilaning) before I put myself against other people. I'd rather not drag my team down too much!
Will be keeping an eye on this blog.

It's kind of a pub thing to do because you can easily counter it. Take your courier and use it for vision between the trees. Also the vision that those wards provide are great - you gain a lot of intel from them in the laning phase.

Nice Post, I like it, but this "I have never seen a team comeback if they're up against megacreeps." is wrong, I lost a SIG when my Team has achieved mega creeps -_- Its kinda fun playing vs Pl, Troll and TB in Lategame with Troll Ultimate

I'm desperate enough to enter any and all beta key contests tbh.

hmm I would have expected some guide about wards too but this seems cool for basics, also you didn't cover the ancients(but that doesn't matter that much). good guide for newbies.

Well..shameless response for a betakey ^^"
I couldn't read the entire thing because I already play a lot of Dota/Hon, but what I read seemed fairly spot on.
I played until level 30 + a bit in LoL and it was a really really dry and boring game at that point even playing with a bunch of different champions. I watched some "professional" LoL and the "pros" honestly seem just as skilled as regular DotA players. I'm not saying they're bad, but I think DotA 2 would probably be much better for them to play.
With that said I'm really looking forward to DotA 2.
Nice guide! I can't wait for this game!
You could always add the numbers for pulling, xx:45 and xx:15 for those who didnt notice. Otherwise a great guide!
AHhhhhhhh when DotA 2 comes out it will be a very difficult decision. Keep playing HoN which Ive already dumped money into and all my friends play? Or play DotA 2 cause it will be the better game?
Choices....T.T
Either way thanks for doing all this for us keyless scrubs xD
Hey, I would love a DOTA2 beta key! Great write up btw!
I've seen guys rosh at level one a few times. What kinda of hero lineup do you have to have to be able to do this? It seems rather hectic. Also what's the point of stacking, is it only if you can't kill the creeps off so you stack then kill when you are able to?
EDIT: I see it's in the pulling step. Interesting never knew that.
Nice little guide. I like that it's not too extensive, just the most important basics. What I would actually be interested in reading is some kind of DotA1 to DotA2 guide that explains all the differences. Even if DotA2 is supposed to be an exact copy of DotA1, there will most likely be some subtle differences. Might be a little bit too early for something like that though, since it's still beta and stuff changes rapidly.
Thanks for guide, and a chance for key.
Cool guide Bumblebee! I've never played any Dota games, but this blog (and the previous ones about dota) gives a pretty good idea about what it's all about :-)
Nice posts as always. I'm most interested in hearing about tri-laning since I stopped following DotA before that became popular. If you come out with a couple laning "sub" articles about the different lane setups you mentioned ( 2-1-2,1-1-2,1-1-3) that would be cool. There is a lot of both basic and advanced information about laning that would be incredibly useful to have laid out in guides like this.
Great guide. Useful for anyone looking to get into DotA. I'm glad people take the time to post these things, they definitely add positive interaction within the community and help to build it.
Also, today is my birthday (no joke. November 5th. :3) A beta key would be the best gift ever.

Either way thanks for doing all this for us keyless scrubs xD Obviously DOTA2 is the right choice!
Feels like HoN is going to die anyways when DOTA2 is released.

Nice guide, even if it seems very basics compared to your others guides imo. However the videos were very interesting, learnt some new tricks :D Thank you ! <3

Cool guide, ive never played DotA much so ill definitely keep this bookmarked for if and when I get into the beta : >

- Invisibility runes cause a hero to become invisible for up to 60 seconds (invisibility is broken if the hero makes an attack or activates a spell)
- Haste runes allow a hero to run at maximum movespeed (522) for a minute, and while Hasted that hero cannot be slowed
- Regeneration runes very quickly heal a hero back up to full HP and MP
- Illusion runes create two illusions of a hero that can be used for scouting, extra damage, or simply confusing the enemy
This needs a little polishing. DD runes last 45 seconds and Haste only 30 seconds (it was nerfed from 45 in DotA 1 several years ago due to 45 being absolutely insanily overpowered). Invisibility lasts 45 seconds after the initial 2? (its 2 in DotA 1) second fadetime. Illusion stats are: Rune of Illusion When activated, creates two illusions of the Hero for 75 seconds. The illusions deal 50% damage and take 400% damage. Which means the 2 illusions are actually pretty solid damage dealers on a long ranged hero in the earlygame as well as long duration scouts for, say, the next rune or that Storm heading your way, trollface grinnin'
I do not have access to DotA 2, but if the mechanic is the same as DotA 1 I would also add that Invisibility runes, unlike Windwalk abilities, do not allow you to walk through units, which means an Invis-hero can actually block enemies while Invisible. This is pretty unique.
Source
Edit: Also while Balanar quite clearly is the hero benefitting the most from night from both skills and vision (given that he has 1200 vision at day and 1800 at night, when most other heroes have 1800/800), there are some heroes that also benefit from night by having better nightvision range than normally. Enchantress has 1800, AA has 1400, Puck 1200 and if Luna gets implemented as in DotA 1 she will have 1800 through skills. This means that certain heroes are harder to gank and can gank easier than others during the night time simply through vision advantage.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this game so I can get back to nerdraging at feeders (and getting raged at for feeding) :-)

Nice Write-Up. Can't wait for the Release! I hope they manage the Leave Issue..

I'm giving up forumlurker-personality for a minute to get a chance at one of your keys
P.S. As a new-ish HoN player wanna thank for the advice so far, it's been great helping me progress, 1650 mmr rating atm and climbing

Really useful guyde. I play ARTS games for at least 2 years now, and some of these concepts weren't 100% clear to me(I guess I really am bad).
Thx for the write up!

Interdasting, coming from someone who's only really played + Show Spoiler + with my friends and had no idea what the fuck I was doing, this just makes me want the game even more.
Will defiantly be getting it when open beta/whenever it's out happens.
Sweet guide. now lets hope i win this key :3
Thanks for the guide.
And it also it reaaaaally nice because of added beta key. :D:D
Awesome guide. I just got into playing MOBAs and it's pretty fun, even though I'm just playing co-op vs. AI for now.
How viable is it to play a jungle hero in Dota compared to LoL?
somewhat incomplete guide but I enjoyed reading it. You could have included some basic item orders essential for things like jungling.
Nice vids though
good guide. one tiny thing you may want to mention is the fact that the regen rune gets cancelled upon taking damage. you go into detail for how invis breaks and whatnot anyways.
Very nice guide and video! Usefull even for noobs like me XD
And the videos are very well done and clear if u know what u have to watch (the lack of sound is bad though )
It's always nice to see more people getting guides like this so that they can be properly introduced to the game. Thanks for doing this writeup, Bumblebee!
I shall win all keys!Oh and good duide btw

Great stuff as always! Got a few of my friends interested in dota and they learned a lot from this ! Saved me time aswell <3 :D

If you triple-stack a camp, then kill all of the creeps from 1 spawn but leave the others alive, will it stack again on the next minute?

Been playing DotA since 5.56 and have had no luck with a key yet, would love a key!

On November 06 2011 01:02 GogoKodo wrote: Nice posts as always. You can totally write a whole guide about tri-laning but essentially it's a lane composed of 1 carry and 2 support (usually stunners) with the idea of dominating the lane so that the carry can farm. Crixalis/Crystal Maiden/Sven/Earthshaker are great supports for a trilane for example.
There can be very different compositions depending on the carry ofcourse but a rule of thumb is that you usually want stunners so you can control the lane. Your carry will most of the time be defensive so it's important that one of your support who doesn't need as much XP creep pull. It takes alot of coordination to have a good trilane but IMO the most important parts are:
Awareness (warding in particular) Positioning Communication Knowing your role (IE a support harassing/denying while the carry farms)
You should check replays/vods if you really want to get into detail about trilanes though.

Thanks for the guide, it will really help if i get in

Interesting, I might get into Dota a bit more. Tried some LoL but didn't like that too much
Nice guide that explains the basics fairly well, it seems to set up your next guide as a lane guide! I think this is a good foundation for new players and it would lend itself to a followup guide of choosing heroes, starting items, and then basic laning concepts.
I especially like how you stressed double stacking THEN pulling, when I saw a pulling section I immediately hoped you would stress that point. You would not believe the number of times someone pulls with just one stack, causes the lane to get pushed, and then gets all defensive when I ask why they didn't double-stack. So you did good by describing that it is about lane control and keeping the lane in a favorable position .

very nice guide. keep it up bumblebee!

Well thx for the blog. You make me even more crazy about the game every time i read a new blog from you.

How can i get the key? I'd like to get a beta key
Very nice guide, this is the best thing for noobs to get in the game. The community can be so aggressive you should go in with some basic knowledge so you don't get flamed too hard.
I used one just like this when I was starting. Very nice! Hope TL can have a nice dota community
"DotA is much like real life" ^^ Nice noob friendly guide))
Runes is most important things in game for Solo players in the mid lane,i mean with one of double damage you can change the destiny of the game with gank. Basicially Mid lane is most important lane,at the Top and Bottom lane, support heroes so important,if you supporting your teammate well and denying creeps good, your team has a good chance for winning that game. Also ward locations very important in top/bottom lanes. I hate the night, when my opponent team has Balanar and run away from me T.T
If you are getting ahead in lanes, you have two chance, give thoughest damage your opponent tower and be ready for action,or pull back.If you able to get attack from natural creeps to your new creep wave, this pretty good way for pulling back.
Jungles are paraside for heros like Ench/Chen/Enigma.Also most important for ward places, you better find good ward location for not getting ganking
Roshan,hmm...Very hard if you not winned 5v5 combat, but if you take aegis of the immortal, this give good chance for pushing your enemy.Aegis of the immortal is pretty good with tank heroes.
After getting first tower of the your opponent, you just need to gank,2nd tier towers for mid/late game, when you win a combat,Get a roshan or get your opponnent 2nd tower.
Also i would like to play DotA 2,but no beta keyyyyyyyyy ((((
Great guide that covers the basics that everyone needs to know
Sweet guide! - I’m so pumped up for this game!
thanks bumblebee for these blogs. i dont need em BUT you lower the number of noobs joining in dota for the first time. i guess many TL user who have never played dota and are considering switching, wont be that lost now... keep up the nice work and spread the word! dota ftw (after sc2 ofc) :D
Great guide for beginners. Thank you!
Really helpful guide for new players, just what people need to get into DOTA2! (And hopefully I might get a key too soon!)
Once again, a great guide. I'm not sure if you covered it in your support blog, but perhaps you should consider adding basic ward spots like covering the rune/jungle entrance and such to your guide.
Edit: Oh yeah, your second video is copyright blocked in the US :<
@ the questions about jungling and trilaning. Trilaning is effective because when done right, the carry WILL get farmed (at least in the early laning phase ), but as described in the OP, the people supporting that carry suffer immensely. I personally believe that a jungle hero is almost always better (with the jungler being with 1 or 2 heroes in the lane) because you get nearly the same benefit without any of the sever consequences. Having a jungler that can gank is a HUGE threat to the enemy that they HAVE to address (by investing in wards and just always being aware of where the jungler is etc.) And I think the threat of the jungler can be just as effective and beneficial to a farming carry as two support heroes who sacrifice their gold/xp for the sake of his farm.
I wish I had access to one of these kinds of guides when I first started playing ): I guess getting raged at is half the fun of learning dota though. I remember when I first started playing every game the lanes were set up 1-2-2 with top being the solo. Could not understand why that was not the optimal setup for the longest time. I also didn't know what the hell creep pulling was either until like 3 years after I started playing, when one of my teammates asked me to do it I just loitered around my tower, unsure of what to do but because I didn't want to be called a noob I didn't say anything. Lost so much exp that game D: Great guide!

Wowow! Nice creepstack demo very clean...
Great guide. I want to play this game so badly.
Now hopefully all new players read this, or experianced players nicley suggest this or coach the newer players rather than raging at them
Creep stacking is definitely one of the coolest mechanics in the game, imo. Nothing beats earning 1k gold in around a minute.
Good guide, also the whole pulling to kill neutral creeps always seemed very tricky to me.
Great summary. Although some of the elements works the same way as in HoN or DotA, I caught a few details I did not know about. Especially pulling, that is something I could improve on. The videos was a great help.
Great guide. Would help a lot in my LoL -> DOTA2 transition. If i had a beta key that is.
It's worth noting that Roshan, like every other creep, get's stronger as time passes, and not just because of devotion aura.
As written in PlayDota.com:
Every 5 minutes (starting at first lane creep spawn) Roshan gets stronger, gaining: +500 hp, +10 damage and +0.5 armor (given by an aura). He will reach his maximum strength at the 45 minutes mark, which is:
HP: 12000 Ground attack - Damage: 155-155 (Chaos)(128 melee) Air attack - Damage: 280-288 (Chaos)(700) Armor: 8
Maybe a little more talk on creeps, damage types, native spell resistance, stats, etc. could be worth it. It's something that is never really explained in the game, and anyone that played Warcraft 3 is familiar with it, but an outsider may be confused when his spell that should be causing 300 damage doesn't kill a character with 290 HP, whatever "pure damage" means or even stranger things like mixed damage.
i've forgotten how to creep pull, this is pretty neat.
also, the image intro in the video looks so sweet.
I must say, i was somewhat indifferent about Dota 2 (even tho all my mates where lusting after it) until i saw that NaVi video from The International...
OMG THOSE GUYS ARE PRO!!!!.
I now understand the hype and all the hours ppl spend practicing :D

That brings me to a question about DoTA2, is that bush still there?

nice writeup

Hope I win a key

Very nice guide! I hope I get one!

Thanks for the guide! I can't say that I've been the most interested in Dota 2, but wow, I never thought that I would be reading a full guide on it. This makes the game look very interesting now! Can't wait for more guides, because I definitely think I'm gonna pick this up! (plus hope for a beta key )
Very nice guide, had my mate read it so he knows what to do =)
Nice Guide and a good read aswell. Keep it coming.

Thanks Bumblebee youve taught me most of what I know about Dota Keep on making them and i'll keep on reading. =)
nice guide to explain it all for newcommers and maybe freshing up your mind!
Thanks for the write up. As a long time dota player I feel some 'true' RTS fans look down on the game as an inferior, less skilled product. While no game can match the demands of a Brood War, dota is extremely rich in strategy. I think this blog is a great jump start for new gamers looking to get their feet wet in dota and even teaches them a few tricks to boot.
Thanks for the blog, and for being generous with keys!

Awesome guide Its interesting that if you dotn stack them It pushes instead of pulls it
I'd love to be able to teach my brother and friends to play with the improved UI and servers of Dota 2! Perhaps luck will be on my side this time around.
Wow. Thanks a lot Bumble!
I've been watching streams for a long time, but your videos and explanations did a ton for helping me to understand the game. I especially liked how you covered the Jungle in good depth, describing the difficulty of creeps, how to stack camps and stop others from doing so!
These were things that simply watching the game unfold in a stream could not teach me.
Thanks again dude, you rock!
I wonder why no one has watched the Dire pulling. O.O;;
Well organized guide, big ups for this!
Yep, very helpful thread. I just hope (wishful thinking) that the community will be a bit less bm as it's in LoL where it's sometimes really appalling how often you get cursed at (or team mates). IdrA in SC2 is sometimes considered BM, in LoL, there's a million worse then him in that regard XD.

This is a pretty good post for new players, something dota really needs

Luckily for me I already know how!

nice guide, at least new players will have "basics" to start with.
One thing I hate about positioning is that when I'm farming and there's a fight, I need to leave the creeps and go fight -_- as an initiator is ok but as supporter (who rarely gets a chance to farm 1-2 creeps to buy wards) is really irritating. As ganker/semi is different story though 'yummy kills' xD
This is a great guide for newer players.
As for myself, I never knew about pulling.
Will help out the newer players, good stuff about stacking creep pulls!
Whaaaaat.. I'll try reupload it later. I just listened to my Spotify while doing it T.T
Great guide, could use a ward section or at least a ward guide link. I think if you include jungling/pulling its a must know. But good work, would love a key. Dota for life!
Thanks for the guide! I was playing a lot of Dota 1, but I haven't played again in quite a while (thanks to Sc2 ). So this comes as a great refreshment.

Yeah, a ward guide would have definitely been nice. In other ARTS games I play, I get some weird delight from placing wards for my team. I love having such a huge impact on the game with a simple action.
Please consider this! =D
Dota2 looks more promising everytime I see it.
great guide, just one question though, the stacking up to 3 camps part is it because after 3 camps there's too many creeps so it's really hard to, or the game literally won't allow it to happe. anymore? I remember when I uses to play, you could have stacked more but was just really hard to do, but that was a while ago
Can't wait for the actual release too! Hopefully I can transition to this from HoN.
Cool blog like always dude! I really apreciate the pulling vods because I always fuck up when i try to pull (well not always but way more than i should). So i give you a ♥. You know you want to give me a key now that i gave you a ♥ =]
Nice, detailed guide! Here's hoping
As a dota veteran (since 2006) you have hit every point spot on. I think you should include a section as to Fountain shops vs Side shop+Secret Shop. This way some ppl in pubs etc will know what items they can get from the side shop and might affect their initial buy. I for one took a long time to figure out where the secret shop was to buy a damage weapon for my recipe -_-". On top of your trilane post, I also think you should put a section on roaming. Adding to the roaming part, perhaps a section on hero roles (Initiate, tank, carry, support, gank)
awesome that you help out people who have not that much knowledge about dota keep it up
Great guide! I've played vanilla dota for a long time and I've been anticipating checking out the second installment. Cheers and good luck to everyone hoping for a key!
3 points I would like to add:
1. Juking 2. Vision 3. Basic mechanics
1. Juking There are several areas where due to the fog, you will be able to escape from enemy's vision in close range when you are in the midst of trees. I don't have a Dota2 account, but based on DotA experience, there are many spots in sentinel jungle where you can experiment and escape their sight.
2. Vision Vision is important. While unlike SC2 where blink to fogged areas are forbidden, blinking to fogged areas are totally legal in Dota. However, a blind blink might have unintended results especially when trying to engage. Hence, there is a rise of tree-destruction tactics in order to obtain greater vision. Notably, beastmaster's axes are used to obtain vision of the level ground in nearly all patches of trees next to all 3 lanes. This greatly helps in preventing ganks as well as to obtain vision on jukers or on enemies intending to use the trees to aid in their escape.
3. Basic mechanics - Minimap As a beginner, you might be focusing on the main vision too much. However, it is very very important to check the minimap every 5 to 10s so that you can get information on the situation. Several things to note: Number of dots on the screen, proximity of the dots.
When you glance, do a quick count of number of enemies on screen. Enabling different colors will allow you to find out which enemies are actually missing. If you check every 5 to 10s, you will be able to tell the position of the enemy you last saw and second-guess the direction of movement. The downside is, unless they TP, you would be guessing their movement based on last seen position. This would take abit more experience, but one will get better over time.
Proximity of dots will show you how close your team mates will be to engaging. If you see that they are getting dangerously close, quickly click on the map and have a glance before deciding if you'd be using your tp scroll to support. In addition, do a quick count of the dots first. The enemy team might not have fully revealed their heroes and are waiting to take extra kills from ambitious support heroes.
Do remember this point. It's like driving and checking your mirrors every once in a while to get a hang of the situation. Hope that helps beginners (and nets me a dota2 key).
glhf.

I'm looking forward to the dynamic Day/Night mechanic that DoTA has over it's clones/brethren through the use of vision ranges and Night Stalker's unique game play. Gonna be fun.

Very good blog, while it covers the basics pretty much there was a few stuff I learned like the different runes duration (invis/DD/haste not having same duration, btw what about regen/illu?) and some of the stats about Roshan. And the videos about pulling will be a good help, I don't know how many times I've tried to explain it but without a vid it's not working well TT

Sometimes its nice to see articles on teh fundamentals everyone takes for granted. Its differences in the players' understanding of the fundamentals which seperates a good from a great player (among many, many other things, obviously).

Nice post, the day/night stuff kinda surprised me. Hope to win a key
Hey dude, thx for the guide and the contest for let a luck at all. Hf & gl all!
Very nice guide, will definitely help a lot of people out! =D
A nice and thorough guide!
Well, I played quite alot of DotA, so these info ain't really new for me. Good effort though. Could use a Beta Key. Good luck to all!
really good blog, very helpful for the new DOTA people
nice blog. i havent played dota for a very long time (stopped around the time when eul left the project) but reading your blog makes me excited about its hopefully glorious return
I actually quite like the videos to do with pulling the creeps. Its pretty wierd seeing (raptors?) and those golems instead of the normal dota ones lol
You can actually triple pull as sentinels (imbalanced jungle) but the creeps won't live long usually - depending on what spawns you get
It would be so awesome if I win this Oo
Awesome guide! really outlines some key concepts of DoTA
Appreciate the guide.
Thanks for the post, helped to understand the basics about which i have already been reading and watching a lot :D. I am an avid LOL player, got interested in Dota 2 from the time they announced it , later I found out about LOL and picked it up with it being F2P and now am totally into it,
But with time after reading and watching the old dota games and the new ones , i found that LOL lacks the strategic depth that DOTA and Dota 2 offer. I am kind of bored with LOL, I tried playing HON too but i hate the graphics and it was too hard for me to distinguish stuff in the screen with everything being too dark and also the models being low LOD (Level of detail).
Me being an avid fan of Valve, am totally excited to see their involvement with Dota 2 and not to mention Icefrog, here is to hoping that I get into the Beta and sate my thirst :D
Loving all the TL dota blogs great stuff guys looks amazing keep it up!
dota 2 is gonna be soooooo epic. i wonder if it will kill LoL
Great blog! Hopefully this will help the newbies alot.
Those videos are really useful in explaining creep pulling! Hope to see more of these blogs, would really help the newer players in understanding the game better in a short time.
Good guide, this would work well as a preface to a guide on hero archetypes and how they work. Some people don't understand that playing support isn't just buying wards and stunning people, but managing the creep stacks, counterwarding, and zoning enemy carries.
Hey, great blog entry. It contains a lot of information and these are handfully presented
Amazing guide - I use to play a lot of dota with my buddies on Garena a few years ago... those were the days. I will use this guide to help me regain some of the lost dota mechanics and hopefully not feed too much ^^
Thank you
Really basic guide. Took many games to get this understanding of dota.
Thanks for the awesome guide, I can see this being very useful to loads of players!
Also, thanks for giving us a chance at keys! Good luck to all!
This was a pleasant read, very good guide. It is great that there are guides for Dota 2 already!
Nice article, you broke down the information really well.
I love Team Liquid and I love you Bumblebee. This is just the kind of guide I need. I've been going crazy trying to learn as much as I can about Dota2. Can't wait! <33
Cool, thanks for explaining some of these obscure (and weird, tbh) aspects of the game
Great guide! ive been waiting for dota2 too come out to make the switch from LoL, you're really hyping me up about it
thank you thay was exactly what i was looking for, complete basics guide for somebody who wants to get in this game ( me )
Neat write-up, cool to see some more DotA stuff around here every day~
I love the whole night and day thing and always have since I first started playing. It's not just for heroes like Nightstalker, it adds a whole new level of strategy where you can plan to gank right when night comes around and your enemies' vision range is lower. Of course escaping from enemies is much easier during night time and it allows for some pretty sick getaways.
Runes really allow for a whole new game in itself for the mid lane. Whoever dominates the runes has a higher chance of dominating mid, and sometimes it just becomes a chase to the rune spots. Of course this means that wards on one of the spots becomes very important so it doesn't become a guessing game on where the rune is. This is where supports shine!
Really nice guide, covers up some really important basics that a lot of people might not know about
Thanks for writing this up. I have really been eager to get into the Dota 2 beta, but I didn't play much of the original. I played a lot of LoL and some HoN though. I got pretty decent at LoL (1600 elo) but the game kind of stagnated, and the people you meet on the ladder was just too much. I would really like to get into competitive Dota 2, and these guides are a great way to learn some of the basics before I even play. I have one question though, are there a lot of comps that revolve around using a jungler, or is it a niche strategy? I know in LoL it was essential to have someone jungling, but I'm not sure about Dota. Hope you can reply to this, and hope I can win the beta key!
Great guide, hehe never knew Roshan had a 75% spell resistance, I just thought he was immune.
Great guide! Hopefully I will be able to finally switch over from HoN
Really nice read, it will be very helpful for newer players looking to get into Dota as I know it can feel like a constant uphill struggle, especially when you're getting flamed for being new! Kudos.

Great guide, now give me that dota2 ygm.
I read the post 2 times now, This is incredibly useful thanks!
Surprisingly informative. Good article!
Nice guide, I should give it to all my noobie dota friends lol.
I wish that they would remove the 00:00 rune like they did in HoN, it's much better.
Probably should've mentioned that killing jungle creeps 15~ seconds before a new wave spawn will block the next one from spawning. Handy thing to know, so you don't end up waiting for a whole minute for the next wave ><
Else a decent guide for newbies I'd presume, would be difficult to put myself in their place!
Great post. Have been looking for a good Dota basics guide to get me into the game. My only MOBA experience is LoL and HoN, this fits exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Thanks for the guide, haven't seen such a detailed dota guide since dota-allstars days, you should write more realy awesome stuff.
Very nice guide as always, When pulling dont autoattack, try to deny your creeps asap, you can deny even 3 creeps with a single pull sometimes.
Sweet guide and I'd love a key
Hey there bumblebee, I hope you this post will see
I've put some time, in writing this rhyme
Since getting into the beta, Would make me wait less on the ETA
For you I'm just another lad, who soon might be very glad
I know this isn't much, but atleast it has my own touch
Thanks for the guide, way better than the most I've read.
You forgot to add Secret Shops, Couriers and Wards! While I understand this is a more basic guide, those things are still important concepts to learn for anyone at any level.
Great basic guide.
Nice guide, I hope I get a shot at winning!
Very helpful guide for new and old players that went to LoL. Can't wait to see what other DotA guides you bring into TL Bumblebee! Also is there a perhaps chance of a DotA 2 team in the works? o.0
Thanks for the guide, look forward to more great suff! Keep it up.
i really would like to get a key
probably this is was already answer but:
is there a difference between HoN's Jungle and Dota2's Jungle?
Umm choo-umm-chumm chophks chophks chopks (Warcraft II Ogre mound sound).
Thanks!
Nice beginner's guide, there's just so much to dota that it is hard to encapsulate them into a brief post, but this is a good way to start newbies off with.
Nice guide, I love seeing non-Starcraft stuff on TL! :D:D
Great writeup! Wishing for a key ROUND 2 !
Guides like this really helped me when I was taking up DotA a few years ago.. Nowadays I can direct newbies to said guides. Helps me, in a way, too. People pick up the basics faster - my pub teammates might actually be decent. (read: not horrible)
Thank you! x)
EDIT: On November 06 2011 00:09 Bumblebee wrote:They do about 100 damage each and have a lot of HP. I have never seen a team comeback if they're up against megacreeps.
Really? I suppose by this you mean all 3 lanes of megas.
the must know about dota! really, your guide should be stick on every dota forum !
ye he did mean 3 lanes pushed, it's literally impossible to recover when you have 3 lanes pushed
So much posts!
Besides, you should put info about wards, everyone should know wards>.>
Great guide. The videos on creep pulling were especially helpful. It's always seemed like such an advanced and difficult technique to pull off, but now I think I might just try it!
This guide just gets me even more hyped about the beta
You should absolutely write something on juking, use some of those juke spots maps and whatnot. One thing that pushed me away from lol is the terrain. In dota ALL trees that are on edges of normal paths are carefully placed(well, 90%?) And since you can cut them down, those deeper into the forest are also placed carefuly. Knowing the existing paths, how many trees you need to cut down etc can be the difference between life and death. I know its hard to write a full guide on it, but you should at least mention that in the next basics related blog.
I don't understand DotA and never did. :[
Amazing guide yet again for any beginner out there. Nicely written, thanks.
i hate to admit but i realized i have to look at guides during my transition from hon to dota 2, and this is an excellent guide. thanks!
Nice guide, I think you should also talk about denying as well for both towers and creeps, and how it keeps lanes not overextended and vulnerable to ganks. Although that might be more of an intermediate thing, I think people should know that denying helps
Great blog series on Dota guys. Keep up the great work ! I'm looking forward to more advanced stuff
Very thoughtful of you to do guides like this, thanks!

Nice Guide, altough you should have written about class roles. That would have been nice.
Great guide, and good luck to all trying for a key.
Looks like a nice guide for newer players.
Great informative guide! Thumbs up!
Best basic guide of yours so far.
I'd add that dead bodies from creeps/neuts and heroes themselves can block neut spawning if they are present for the required time when neuts respawn every minute. Not just wards! Also maybe a picture of the boxes around each neut area, which should be the same as dota 1.
As seen here in detail: http://www.playdota.com/mechanics/neutralcreeps
very nice guide, i like all the good info that is being posted on TL for a dota noob like me to use if i get a key
Nice guide, especially with the jungle information.
Nicely done, glad i could find something like this on tl, gonna brush up my skills a bit
Very good guide for new players. Although I am not new to the genre myself, guides like this one really help to eliminate a small portion of the enormous learning curve that DotA 2 has.
I'm still keyless, unfortunately
Why did they have to change all the names.............
Edit : whoooooooooops those are just the new names for Sentinel and Scourge I guess.
Whats Quick Buy?
Nice and easy to read. GL all!
Nice guide! Cant wait to play this game
I think I'll be showing this to my new friends coming into DotA. Thanks a lot Robin
Great Guide for basics in dota being a pretty casual player who hasn't played too much since 2007 this is exactly what i have been looking for to get back in to dota and brush up on my skills!
Looking forward to more guides would love to see some more advanced guides too!
Thanks for the guide! Think this will benefit a lot of new players (of which there are bound to be loads)
Nice guide
Nice to read up on the basics again. I played a little bit of DotA before I got into HoN and it's nice to see the basics are exactly the same so I won't have to start over come DotA 2!
Great guide. I've been playing DotA for a while but I've never cared for the duration of the runes. Had no idea that invis lasted for 45 secs. <3

Thanks for this, it's always hard to get people to start playing DotA now, maybe this will help if i show them~!
The pulling guides are a super nice touch, really great guide overall very helpfull and informative.
Great guide. Love the key contests.
Oh nice I am so interested in this game can't wait to play it!
Nice guide, Didn't actually know the full details of Roshans abilities until now :p
This is a great guide, and I hope I can pass it on to friends this time around. Some of them would quit before they would pick up on common sense elements like using your towers for protection against enemy units and heroes. *fingers crossed*
This is actually a pretty good beginners guide to the basics of the game; I also didn't know that Roshan dropped cheese after killing him 3 times - that's interesting...
A lot of people underestimate how strong the creeps are, especially at early levels. If you have a strong creep advantage in lane (e.g. you have 6 melee creeps, 2 ranged creeps, and a catapult vs. 2 low health melee creeps on the opponent side) that's a great time to use your stuns, the creeps will kill the remaining creeps quickly and then pounce on the opponents and can do 200-300 dmg, especially if they get trapped by a tree or something. The fact that you can't run through creeps/heroes is huge early game in lane.
Really nice guide! Hopefully you make a follow up about laning. Would love some advanced tactics!
Nice read, realy want a key =)
Very useful stuff. Hoping to get into Dota 2 whenever I get my hands on a key. Stuff like this will surely help a ton
Nice guide just a little correction for you: Jungle ... not something for a level 1-3 hero. Most of them are also magic immune.
Other than that a good write-up for beginners though you leave the most important thing (imo) untouched: getting to know every hero so you can judge the possibilities of your enemy.
haven't played in a couple years, but super excited for this game!
It might be worth mentioning that you can use quelling blade to remove the trees if you are pulling with that item in your inventory. Instead of using a tango.
As for always wanting to double stack pulls, I can't agree with that. Using a single pull to get a dual creep wave is great if you have pushing heroes like chen or pugna on the lane. Usually means ~500 tower damage at a minimum.
Question, did they change cheese in Dota 2 or is it still 2000 hp and 500 mp? Since you said it restored full hp/mp.
Thx for the guide, looking forward to release.
Awesome guide. I'll pair this with your support guide for when I play some dota and be the best i can be!
i haven't really played dota too much but coming from a HoN pov (which is similar to dota) looks like a good guide for people who are starting into the game.
Thank you for this guide. I haven't played DotA in ages and your post reminded me of how awesome the game is. Please keep posting blog updates! It is my hope to see Techies in the game soon, my fondest memories are playing with my best friend in a Pudge/Techies combo.
Awesome post, could you talk about how to jungle in the next one, which camps are best to stack, when to stack, when to pull and overall gameplay strats with the different jungle heroes? Thanks
Good Guide For People That Basics is Everything
Thanks so much this really helped! I Never played DoTA, only HoN, so this was a nice way for me to learn all of this. Really liked the pictures and videos too!
really nice guide hope you continue with the good work should give some new players an idea about the game mechanics
Winning a key would be great!
Nice guide. I hope to see more guide like this in TL
Good guide. It's nice to see one that sticks to the basics.
Nice overview of the basics :D glad u kept it short and concise haha. Also thank you for giving out keys to the TL community <3
thanks for the guide ! i´d love to get a key
Thanks a lot for providing quality content to TL. I'm new to DotA, but not new to the "MOBA" genre. So this helps a lot, thanks! Here's a post for a shot at that key, also...
Thanks for posting this I never really got into dota when i was playing wc3 but found this genre more fun than I thought after playing a bit of LoL, hoping for a dota2 release soon.
Great guide as usual. I've been a DOTA fan for a long time, but I'm no where near being that knowledgeable about it. Your guides really shine light on it for me.. Thank-You and keep them coming!
Great guide, there's actually a lot of stuff about rosh I didn't know.
I didn't need the guide, but I read the guide. Now I hope I get a key!
Love to see more and more DotA material on TL. Can't wait to play DotA2 feels like I've been waiting forever.
Glad people are writing guides on fundamentals. The barrier to entry for DOTA has always been notoriously high, and it's time for it to be lowered. Thank you for this.
Nice guide, though about the rax I think its very important to note that melee rax's are significantly more important as the creeps just push so much harder. Though they have the same HP though, the ranged barracks has significantly less armor making it easier to kill so you may have to choose it if you're really pressed for time D:
Hope I winz key D:
The most basic of basics. Awesome. How about a guide on positioning? That's something noobs seem to get mixed up all the time.
Hey thanks for the guide! Love it! Great for starters and those trying to stray from other similar games into Dota2. Also, thanks for the chance at winning the beta! Thank you!
Cheers for the "tl;dr" on pulling. I have played DotA for around 4 years now, clocking in close to a thousand games... but not until now did I think that one could double-pull like that as Sentinel. :/
I'm always so amazed about the intricacies of DotA that I never appreciated.
Pick me !
Pretty cool, Should be helpful if I get a beta key.
Like some other people said in the comments, it would be interesting to add a little section on the melee/range rax and how the melee rax has priority on the range one. Also, maybe mention that the runes can be kept for later inside a bottle?
Anyhow, awesome guide, you and flamewheel are making wonders. I'm glad to see your guides are way better and noob-friendly then most guides out there, even on the dota forums. Sadly, these are mostly guides for new players and my friends and I have been playing for a couple of years now so it's not really helpful for either of us. However, I do have some friends who are willing to try DOTA because of the DOTA2 hype these days and I'll make sure I direct them to your guides so they can prepare for their couple of first games.
TL:DR GREEEAT BLOG
Do you plan on doing a guide for warding spots? It's probably THE thing that everyone should learn when they get into this game.
I love basic guides. When I first started DOTA all of my friends were better than me. But, being so competitive, I like read 20 guides a day and watched pro replays. I quickly passed up all of my friends.
One interesting thing is going from a basic guide to a more advanced one. Things like first rune is :00 and getting it for your solo middle is like imba gg.
Thanks for the guide, gonna help a lot for when I eventually get a key
Nice guide that all players that are new to dota need to read.
I really love what you are doing with Dota 2. It's precisely what we need in the Dota 2 community. Skilled players that are willingly spending time helping new players from a different game genre. Thanks on behalf of a-know-nothing about dota person. After reading your blogs im more pumped up to give Dota 2 a shot. In fact, i recently started playing Dota 1 because of this and with your guide i feel like i have a decent grasp of the game basics/mechanics. Really looking foward to dota 2! Hoping I can join you in Dota 2!
Would love a key! erikstj on twitter
Awesome guide, very good for all the new and mediocre ones. All basics included! Looking forward to the meta game blog, if there is one in production !
Would like a key if I were to be so lucky :d
nice guide
and +1 a ward guide would be awesome
Nice guide, would nee some jungling advices on which one to kill first/etc =D.
Great guide, reminds me of the good old days!
Keep looking back to the banner :<. Good guide.
Nice guide, thanks for writing it
Great guide, would be sick if you went in depth of different heroes in the future.
Agreed, sweet guide. Looking forward to a hero composition guide if you ever write one!
Awesome guide hope you make more in the future!
thanks for the guide fingers crossed
Really helpful guide for players new to the genre, or even to DoTA itself. Somehow I didn't even know that Roshan dropped cheese after 3 deaths, even though I have played DoTA forever.
Nice to see these really well done DoTA2 articles getting attention on TL.
This was really helpful! Thanks for the info and the chance to win a key!
nice guide, looking forward to getting a key
I can't say I have anything interesting to say, but I might as well throw my hat into the ring! I'm a long-time LoL player looking to give DotA2 a shot-- having only minimal DotA experience playing with friends a few years ago, posts like this are really helpful to remind me of the differences between the two games, so thanks for the guide!
Always good to see a guide like this. Thank you. :D
Great introductory guide. I look forward to any future guides you'll write up~ Good luck to everyone for a key.

Thanks for the guide, I stopped playing dota years ago so this was great for refreshing on the basics.
It is always great to see a guide when laying a new game, even if it isn't really NEW!
Great guide, keep up the good work!
Very informative! Thanks a lot!
Nice guide Bumblebee. Although I already knew all this stuff, its nice to have so I can show it to my friends. I've tried to explain to them the differences between Dota and LoL but so far all they've understood is that you can "kill your own creeps?!?!" and that its somehow harder. Thnx again!.
Always good to have a guide about the basics. Also really neat to see the Dota 2 community picking up here and will be awesome to have more stuff like this in the future.
Great read. I really like the fact that the DotA 2 community on TL.net is stepping it up with all these awesome guides.
I like the organization and clean-look it gives off. Good job!
Sweet guide, looks like it will help once I get Dota 2. Bookmarked.
Well, I'll echo the thoughts of everyone else and chime in and say great guide. One thing I think people who write guides, (I tend to read alot of them) underestimate is the power of good images and visual representations of the things they are discussing. It makes such a huge difference. You may think that the things your describing are clear enough, or dont really require a screenshot, or are just plain lazy, but honesty is a huge addition. So I was pleased to see you incorporate alot of screenes, just reinforcing the topics you were talking about.
A key thing that I think is a very tough topic initially to grasp for most new players is the idea of creeps, and that you dont actually want to be pushing them up towards your enemy, at least intiially. What makes it confusing is that it seems so counter-intuitive. "Hey, these creeps are pushing towards my tower, I WANT to kill them and push em back, isn't the goal of the game to push towers and eventually kill their base!?" When you explain the concepts of ganking and distance from your own tower, and the dangers that it entitles, it all makes it quite confusing for a beginner. Heh, just another aspect of Dota that takes some time getting used to.
I almost feel that jungling itself is such a different aspect of the game then just standardly playing in a lane, that it requires a bigger description, but then realized that it would almost be overwhelming for most newer players, which would be counter productive for this guide. Just like normal lanes, one of the huge benefits of being in the jungle is that, since most people dont ward/keep track, you will generally always be missing, and could always be available for a gank or something mischievous. Makes them play more cautiously and you can sometimes exploit that fear.
This is actually an amazing guide. Coming from a low-profile DotA background, having spent most of my time with LoL(though not that much), I was looking forward to relearning a lot of the differences.
It's nice and simple, with some general tips that you'd have to find out to know. Thanks for the guide .
This is really good help for the beginner. Its hard to explain the concept of this game for sure. Good guide!
Nice Guide, the videos are going to be useful for for a lot of people(Including me )
Good guide, now if only I had a beta key... ^_^
Very very nice post....keep up the good work!
Hey Bumblebee,
Thanks for these blogs man. I was a huge fan of DotA in War3, and have been looking for something to fill that void for awhile. I tried getting into League of Legends. Alas, it is just not the same. I don't even enjoy HoN as much as the original. There is nothing like the feeling of running around as N'aix, and people are afraid to fight you when they are at full HP. Ahhhhh...the memories.
Please keep up these posts! It's awesome to see someone so dedicated to DotA, and TL.Net that they are willing to put in the time and effort to put out guides like this. Not nearly enough people are dedicated to teaching the new age the nuances of DotA, and i'm glad to see someone has taken that responsibility.
The same goes to Flamewheel. Thanks for the guides from you too man. I remember playing that guy in DotA, such a beast of a carry if he got a BFly.
Thanks again guys! Love the Blogs!
Cheers,
~Jitsu

Great guide, ever since coming back to WC3 dota (a month of so ago) I never realised the night vision decrease was so drastic. I guess aga really is amazing for nightstalker ^^.
Anyways a key would be nice .
This is a great guide! Thanks for posting it up!
Great guide, you and flame are really stirring up the community to be pumped for DotA 2!
This is great for starter people. I have taken lots of time off Dota so I think it might be time to start up again!!
Thanks for this again.
DotA 2 would be a great game I'm sure. But I think that it is too much of a direct port of its predecessor. I guess the Valve team and Icefrog decided it would be safer to make a similar game and not change too much similar to how Starcraft 2 followed up on Starcraft. I started playing DotA since the Invoker patch and was unfortunate to not witness the full evolution of DotA from the very beginning but I have seen how the game have so drastically evolved since the first time I played. DotA was limited by its Warcraft 3 engine and I was wondering what do you think DotA 2 should introduce to the genre?
I mean no disrespect to other players if some of what I said offended others.
Very informative guide by the way, great way to gateway the genre for newer players. Keep up the good work.
Very nice guide! Really helpful.
Very nice high-level overview of the basics of DotA! The game has a reputation of being very intimidating to newcomers, so it's good to see content like this be put out there for the community.
Nice guide, I play LoL but that is the only moba I have ever played. It seems to me that Dota has a lot more depth once inside the game than LoL does, though there are masteries and runes outside for LoL. I really want to try out Dota 2 though, especially since the LoL client is the worst thing that has ever happened.
This blog was a good read, it looks extremely helpful for beginners. I'll show this to a few of my friends if we get beta keys ~
Thanks for that good guide!
Can't wait to play it.
Very complete guide, will help a lot of the newcomer dota2 will have.
The usual time for pulling is (:13~:15 or :43~:45), although I'm unsure of the top pulling as radiant but it should be around the same.
Cant wait for the game to come!
Is DOTA harder to control than LoL?
Good read. And I'm not gonna lie, I made an account in hopes of getting a code. I'm bad like that.
Nice guide! And good luck to all of those looking to get a key
It would be nice if you could include places to ward to block the jungle spawns that also give good map vision at the same time
Great guide for people just getting into dota, like me ;3 thx.
Don't know how you'll randomly choose from thread posts (especially with the influx of random redditors ), but nice discussion of DOTA basics (even let me know a couple things I was unaware of Roshan).

Hey I'm trying to learn this genre out recently. Is someone able to show me some basics in a hon game? Plus thanks for the guide bumblebee.
nice guide bro! cant wait to play dota2 anylonger
Thanks for the writeup, I didn't know Roshan only slams when there are enough enemies around him!
I actually did not know about the night/day vision range mechanic.
Thanks for the guide.
Thank you for the guide, I honestly did not notice any sort of day/night thing before but now that I know there is a big difference and that certain champs get benefits, I will have to keep a lookout when the game is released.
Nice guide. Wish there was some stuff like this that was easy to find when I started playing DotA. There are a lot of guides on playdota.com but are not as concise and easy to understand as this.
Nice guide, gimme key NAO!!! Been a Dota fan for a few years
Nice Guide man, now i know how to pull like a boss, keep up the good work!
Why do you keep dangling the keys in front of us like so many carrots!?
Awesome writeup, the strangest part of all this is how similar DOTA/DOTA2/HoN/LoL are in these respects (towers, barracks, minion waves, farming, etc.), but just from tweaking numbers in minion HP, damage, attack speed, they feel like completely different games, rather than offshoots of each other.
Now, back to checking my email every four hours.
I would like a dota 2 beta key too ^_^
Great guide on the basics
Cool writeup, you gonna cover some more advanced stuff later?
Nice guide! Very informative. Hopefully I'll get that beta key so I can use the guide!
Wow, this game is a lot more like League of Legends than I thought. Wish I could pull creeps to my minions in LoL, would make jungling so much easier. :D Great post, and posting here for a chance at a beta key if you don't mind. ^^; Ty!
Thanks for the guide, and the drawing! Here's to getting lucky
Really good info especially the jungle and pulling info. New players picking support heroes can really benefit from reading that.
Thanks for the guide. I haven't played DotA for a while, and this helped refresh me on some of the things I forgot & even missed.
Nice guide. The pull videos are actually quite helpful, as I had never tried the concept of double pulling... maybe you should go over common ward spots too, which is good info for newbies.
I haven't played DOTA in a while, been playing LoL instead, so good to catch me back up to speed in time for the beta/launch ^^
Absolutely Love this guide, The similarities between HoN and DotA are really close, cant wait to try it
Nice guide, definitely looking forward to more!
great help for someone who's only just dabbled in some DoTA-esque games such as HoN and sucked at them.
much appreciated!
Good thread here, definitely some great advice for people hoping to get into Dota 2!
I have never played DotA or any like game before, save watching various SC2 pros goof around in between laddering. This guide was very helpful in getting me to understand some of the basic strategy in DotA2, as well as the play value. The game seems to have more depth than it appears at first. Your videos were also pretty helpful, I did not understand pulling at all until you showed it. Overall, great blog, and great intro to DotA2! I would probably play it if I get the chance
great guide, hopefully i can win the beta key, been playing dota for a long time.
Nifty guide, could you add spawn/respawn times for jungle mobs to it?
Great beginner's guide! Hope I win!
Can't wait to get my hands on techies!
I think the most understated concept of DotA and MOBA games in general is map control. Gaining map control is first achieved through proper warding, in order to have vision over hot spots in the map at all times. The ability to have constant vision in multiple parts of the map is the most important part of successful teamwork and communication, which leads into better synergy in teamfights and the removal of unnecessary ganks.
Tower control directly leads into map control, as towers innately help with managing creep flow in lanes. Removal of these towers means losing a lane, and that means quite a bit in a game like DotA. It also means that roaming is much more effective, because having a tower advantage in a lane allows players to forgo pushing a lane in favor of a possible gank on the enemy team. There are numerous other advantages to playing safe and focusing on towers to win lanes, but I'd rather leave the details to more experienced players than me.
Kudos on the guide, and I hope that there are many more! I can't tell you how much I appreciate players like you educating those new to the genre. It can only be a good thing!

I quit lurking for chance, Yes Please!

Hey Bumble, I also had a question. I saw that you had said your favorite support was OmniKnight. My build with him differed what I was facing, but I found that, even at max level, I would leave only two points in Repel. Because my heal couldn't go through my own shield, I felt that having it's duration last 10 seconds instead of 20 could be a lot more beneficial than the 20 seconds of Repel without healing. Thoughts?
Thanks for helping out the community.

A very insightful guide. Thank you.
Thanks for the writeup. I've only played DotA and haven't been following any events or streams so I didn't know much about Dota 2 until this. I've also been following SC2 via TL, but have never made an account until now.
awesome guide, thanks and thanks for giving keys to the community.
Wow, brilliant guide, I thought I was a pretty good player but even I learnt things from this! Thanks a bunch :D lol if I get a key, I will honestly kiss someone's feet on the street.
My bro plays dota, and he mains furion. Teleport ftw!!
Very nice guide.
Guess I better go along with the rest of the herd by saying 'great guide'! :D
Would be awesome to finally be able to play dota 2
awesome guide , keep it up ^^

I always felt that that additional 10 seconds sometimes did more harm than good.
Another awesome guide. Might also want to mention that killing melee barracks is better than the ranged due to difference in creep numbers.
I believe there was a game with old MYM vs Na'Vi in Farm4Fame where they came back from megacreeps. It's one of the top rated on gosugamers.
Well, as a complete newbie to the Dota genre, this guide gave me nice view of the basics of the game, will surely help me in the future when I am free to play Dota 2.
Though, here comes a newbie question, the... Moon Priestress, doesn't she has "extra's" in night time as well? Or is it really just Nightstalker that gains something "extra" when it's night time?
Not that I am doubting the info provided by Bumblee, just something that crossed my mind from watching streams here and there, could be my imagination in the end. ^ ^
Also, there are no Heroes that will gain something "extra" in the day time?
Either way, thanks for the nice guide Bumblee and for the others you made. Still need to check those though, just found out from this guide. xD
good guide for us newbs! :D
I want DotA2 :D Thanks for the write up
Well written, I wish stuff like this was around when I started back in the original DotA :D
Thanks for writing this, i'd love a key.
Good to see a very solid guide for beginners. After countless hours of playing DOTA, these things become like second nature though.
Really good guide. I haven't played DotA seriously in a few years, and this helped refresh my memory. Good writeup

Coming from LoL into DotA I never imagined there were going to be this much difference, ty for the insight.
Now I better get myself war3 if I dont wanna scrub it out, bot games here I go!.
Mummra could use a key, please.
Definitely a post I'll be referring all my friends to to give them a intro to dota 2 when we eventually get into beta. Good read!
Did wards bypass the nighttime vision restriction? cant remember how it was in wc3
Nice write up explaining the basic concepts of DOTA, I have quite a few friends that are interested in picking up DOTA2 when the game launches and I will recommend that they read this to get some of the basics down!
Great guide Crossing my thumbs, cant wait to play.
Shameless entry post for giveaway. Good blog though.
Nice, exactly what the dota community needs in order to stay alive, instead of killing anyone who even attempts to learn the game
Great guide! It'd like learning the game all over again :3
Very nice guide, always a treat to read such thorough works.
As a question, do you think you or flamewheel will be writing up a guide on hero roles (initiation, carry, support/babysit, etc), and/or proper laning (special focus on playing mid, obviously slightly different based on hero but I feel like people need to know to control runes/gank appropriately)? Would love to read a thorough version, and I know it'll help out the community that is new to dota. :D
And of course, fingers crossed for a key!

Tbh i came for only the key, at first place, but then i read your blog and i think these kind of information is a must for new players. Well done
Nice guide section of Roshan, didn't know he had so many skills! How long did it take to make this guide? 10 hours?
Never could get into HoN, but I loved Dota, so this game will be interesting for sure! I'm guessing I'm not gonna like it as much as I did Dota (and the wc3 engine), but definitely gonna give it a shot.
Key would be awesome indeed!
I've fascinated by your pulling guide and you are so good at it. I really want a beta key so if you could hand out one to me that would be perfect!
Gj on the guide. Will be very helpful to newcomers. Here's to hoping DotA 2 gets as big as SC2 and to me getting a key

I could only find the one discussing supports, which did indeed reference to a previous blog being about lineups, and I'm assuming that's the one where you discuss overall roles. I'll dig it up and give it a read, thanks!

Brings me back to the good ol days before HoN and LoL came out T.T. Can't wait for Dota 2 ^_^
Nice guide , I played a fair bit of HoN, this has been helpful to understand the some of the differences and also the similarities .
Thanks, keep it up!
Thanks for another awesome guide Bumblebee! I'd really love to see a detailed guide on Omni-knight too, as it is one of my favorite heroes for sure. I didn't knew about that double pull before now so I thank you for your wisdom it is highly appreciated. And that you have taken the time to do youtube recordings too that's just sick, you and flame wheel are doing so many and awesome dota 2 guides its sick, I really hope I can play you sometime when ever I get a key. I had the chance to test dota 2 at Gamex in stockholm today which was really awesome, played both as witch doctor and anti-mage in 2 games, felt sooooo gooooood!
Great guides so far! Thanks for all the information! Can't wait til DotA 2 release :D
Pretty good guide, but perhaps mentioning tower attack priority is a good addition.
Cool introduction for newbies, thanks!
Hope I get a Dota 2 key, but if not, thanks for the guide!
Nice Blog. I didn't really like DOTA games until a friend forced me to sit down and play some LoL. Now I don't play much else. I'm hoping for a key, but with all these other people, I doubt I'll get one...
Awesome guid, here's hoping im that #183!
I really want a dota beta key xD
Wow,
I've been playing League of Legends for quite some time now but haven't really played DOTA. I'm seeking to play DOTA2 once it gets released and this really seems to sum up a lot of the differences between LoL and DOTA
Great guide for beginners, hope I win the key :D
nice post, would love to get a key, getting tired of LoL
Thanks, useful stuff right there particularly for those who are looking to come over from LoL and such, where things like creep pulling just don't exist.

Posting here on the rare chance of the beta key

I've been meaning to try out a game like this for ages; thanks for the beginners' guide
Great guide for newer players, but I already know most of it. Here's to hoping for a key!
Thanks for the great guide, never knew that creep stacking was such an important aspect of DotA! Usually only played for fun with my friends.
I'd be interested in knowing how wards work in Dota2. Specifically if the same spots as in Dota still apply. The best ward spots used to be slightly tricky. I wonder if they've made those spots easier, and if there are some new sweet spots for warding.

Very helpful information, can't wait to get started on dota2

28 pages! Whoa the Dota 2 interest is spiking significantly! I like that the basics of the game can be put so clearly and succinctly but the intricacies and effects of laning/jingling etc have such big impacts on the game. I feel for beginners a lot of the time games are won or lost in the laning phase.
The YouTube links were a great example hehe I appreciate the effort!
Thanks for the guide, very detailed and useful. Looking forward to more in-depth posts about DotA.
Lol DOTA FOR THE WINNNN!!! Gonnan play it religously
Thanks a lot for the pulling description and vids from Bumblebee, these are great info for a newbie like myself. About the runes, does a bottle have to be empty to get a rune and does an empty bottle auto grab a rune? This is a really basic question but last time I tried asking a basic question in a similar game (HoN; how to share a courier) the abuse went on for about 30 mins
Thanks for the guide, never played dota but looking to get into this one
Bottle autograbs the runes in DotA2 no matter if the bottle is full or not.
Thanks for a great guide! This guide makes me more excited about dota2!
I've always been terrible at pulling camps, hopefully the video can help me out in that area. For your next guide could you do one about positioning?? Like in a fight where should each type of hero be, when should they come into the fight, where should they be laning, how can a solo avoid early ganks in a lane, especially against 2 stunners etc?
I want this beta so bad but im kinda new so this is HUGE for me, thanks man!
I played DotA for a long time but I didn't know about Roshan's devotion aura. Nice writeup overall.
Great guide, as a new player this is very helpful!

So getting a key would be pretty cool... just saying <3
Really good guide though!

So if you stand near the rune the bottle just grabs it? That might not be necessarily good right? What if you're waiting to give it to someone on your team?

From what I've heard from people in the Beta, if you right click the rune, it goes straight into the bottle, no matter if it's full or not. What you can't do right now is use the rune before sending it to the bottle, but that's something that would happen very, very rarely.

Really nice guide. It's also important to note that when you have a regen rune it goes away when your HP/MP are full so if there any beneficial spells you can cast right after getting regen they're basically free since the regen rune will refund the cost in seconds. Fingers crossed for a key as well!

Great post, thanks! I've watched a few DOTA2 games, but haven't quite got a grip on most of the basic concepts yet, and this post certainly helps with that.
Cheers!

Thanks so much for the guide, waiting for more!!

Good job Bumblebee! Very informative indeed. The only thing missing in my opinion is a section about towers. More specificially how they work. What are they going to aggro? When? Is it possible to reset etc. Back in the day it took me quite some time to figure the tower mechanic out

Nice guide. I have a few friends who I want to introduce to dota (they have only played LoL), and this guide should help explain some major aspects of the game to them.

Really good guide. I hope that people embrace the new players rather than ignore them.
nice article, hoping to be a lucky guy!
Very detailed guide, and I just want to add a little bit to the pulling video.
For pulling, I think it is mostly for lane control, so single pull is considered useless because single stack of neutral won't kill many creep. In my understanding, I usually do the double pull or I don't pull at all. Either I waste one pulling to spawn two wave of creeps or I do the double pull. The trick (or not really trick anymore) is to have tango for Radiant so you can open a path and pull the second group of creep. Usually when the creeps' overall hp is down to half, you can pull the second creep and let them attack you in front of your creeps. Beyond that, since Icefrog rework the spawn that corpse don't stop spawning new creeps, you can do triple pull in Radiant if you do double pull around 26 sec for every minute. You should be able to pull your creep to the second wave before the first wave re-spawn, and you usually have to take some damage to clear all the creeps because your creeps will be dead. Anyway, if you manage to do that right, your lane will have so much advantage since you gain extra exp and your opponent lose one wave of exp. Even if we play 2v1 in the bottle lane, we will both outleveled the other side =).
Again, hit me with a key please.
Great basic guide
I have quite a few LoL players who haven't played HoN or DotA but are interested in DotA 2. I'll definitely show them this guide! Thanks!
thanks for the pulling video! I've always had trouble with that
Australia8532 Posts
Stack pulling is always better than single pulling because single pulling pushes the lane as the creeps dont die and actually end up back in the lane around the same time as the next creep wave leading to a double wave push. The only time i'd single pull is to get the lane back for a small period of time to set up a gank, usually from mid.
Man I am excited for some epic rune battles at zero minutes!
cant wait to see what other blogs you come up with, these have been more than exceptional. i can't wait for the beta to open up so i can hopefully play with you and other TLers. also though, really liked the creep pulling thing because while it sounds simple, for me it was always hard to put into practice. ;\
You should talk about creep equilibrium. Basically whenever you attack a creep it pushes the lane forward and when attack your own creep it pulls the lane back. Same applies to towers attacking creeps, random spread of creep dmg, and the way the creepwave engages.
General rule of thumb, the closer the creeps are to a tower, the safer it is because people can port in and the lane is closer to your side of the map
So after reading the guide again I want to add some things that are maybe worth editting in.
Illusion runes create two illusions of a hero that can be used for scouting, extra damage, or simply confusing the enemy
2 images. Last 75 seconds. Take 300% damage. Deal 35% damage.
Regeneration runes very quickly heal a hero back up to full HP and MP. Like a salve or clarity, these break upon receiving any damage.
Regenerates 3000 HP and 2010MP over 30 seconds. 100 HP/s 67 MP/s.
The Time of Day
Maybe you can add that one cycle takes 12 minutes. 6 minutes day and 6 minutes night time.
Yeah thats about it. Maybe its already to in-depth don't know (just ignore my Post then :p)
Awsome Guide especially the pulling videos

good write up dude. alot of this stuff i havent really thought about as ive been playing for so long and shit just came by instinct eventually. good to go back to basics every now and then ^^.

The clock starts at 6:00, which is where daytime starts. It is considered to be day between 6:00 to 18:00, and night from 18:00 to 6:00. Each complete cycle takes 12 minutes (6 minutes day and 6 minutes night). There are only 2 ways of interrupting this cycle, and it is with Night Stalker's ultimate, Darkness and Luna's ultimate, Eclipse. While under the effect of it the clock will be paused.
Are you sure there wasn't a NS ingame? If that was the case, it may actually be a bug in Dota2, PlayDota should be acurate on something as simple as this.

Can't wait to get the game (and preferably a beta key).
Thanks for the tips man! appreciate it

Thanks for a guide I can point my friends who play LoL toward. I'd recommend watching Luminous' guide on jungling for more detailed information, but this was a nice summary.

Looks like I shall need some luck here
Pretty good write up, but when I first saw the title I was under the assumption that this would've been a "complete beginner's guide to dota" type of blog.
You should probably clarify that at least a minimal understanding of the game is required, as the blog goes about a lot of basic stuff, but not basic enough for people completely new to the game to grasp (at least IMO).

Damn, lot of replys here.
Great guide, even though all of it's available elsewhere.
thanks for the write-up - hopefully i'll get lucky
Awesome guide again :D Hopefully we get a guide on doing multi stacks and what creeps are the best for using Helm of the dominator on and what not :D
Another submission, great stuff. Good to have it all in a basic guide for dota nubs like me.
wow, i really didnt know about the night/day factor in ganking. i only knew it affected balanar
Nice job, keep the dota content coming!
Amazing, might actually pick up Dota2 with all these guides going around
u can comeback from megacreeps if your team is co-ordinated +farmed - charge straight to the throne!

Congrats on the featured post. Great info as always.
Fingers crossed! I haven't played dota in a little over a year now so this was most helpful.
Here's to hoping! But mostly thanks for the jungle minimap
Great guide skimmed over it real quick; I used to play dota all the time but now I play HoN frequently and I am looking forward to DotA2.
thanks for the guide, I'm looking toward Dota 2 as I've been playing the orignal Dota ever since 2004. Brings me my nostalgia!
Looks really nice and it was a good read indeed.
Maybe you should add another section into your blog, which might include champion guides or first impressions of new champions.
=)

I've been playing hon for a while and though I'm not super duper good, I gotta say it's a pretty good writeup. Seeing how many people at my level (1700ish) don't know this kind of basics, it should definitely help the beginners. Good job. ^^
Been a long time since I played dota so this info is actually pretty helpful. I'm really excited for dota 2 and would love to get in on the beta. Hope I win a key!
I didn't learn anything from this guide (I've played DotA for years), but I read the whole thing and will link it to some friends of mine who are going to give Dota 2 a try when it comes out. Very well-written, clear, and concise guide! Thanks a lot.

Team Park wants Dota 2 beta keys!
Must pubstomp with Tiny~~
Great guide.
In my opinion though, i kinda dislike players who excessively stack and pull camps. Nowadays when the opponent see the creep waves disappear, it's cue for them that they can most definitely get a free tower kill especially if they have chen/enc/furion/enigma. Like most teams never ever pull creeps against Navi because doing that means instant loss of T1 tower.
Creep pulling is good but don't do it excessively because the heroes in your lane might not be able to hang on into the towers which is very important as well.
Great guide Keep it up.
I enjoyed this a lot and learned some details, despite having read a couple of guides already. Big thanks! Hope you don't mind me pointing out some parts that made me wonder, or were perhaps just minor typing mistakes.
On November 06 2011 00:09 Bumblebee wrote: Lanes There are three lanes on DotA and there are more than one way to go about the lanes. I think it should be "there is".
Middle lane is sort of even between the two sides Does that mean it's not really perfectly even? Interesting.
scenario where you have to solo lanes. "two"
so you need to be able to recover without compromising other heroes or your job as a support (which is wards, ganking and making sure the others in your team are having the time they want to be having). This sentence ends abruptly - "your job as a support"... is something? ("will be unsuccessful", perhaps)
If you manage to kill of Roshan three times in a single game, he will start dropping more than just the Aegis. Does the 3 counter include both teams, or is there a separate counter for each team? ("kill off", by the way)
Rax & Towers If you want to break down the main purpose of the game, it's all about eliminating your enemies throne. "your enemy's Ancient Fortress" ("throne" is from Dota 1, but they changed it for Dota 2, as it's too WarCrafty )
Basics that I thought could be briefly added: Ability, Level, Experience, Last-hit, Deny (particularly Denying towers) All in all, awesome introduction, thank you for posting it!

I've never played DotA, but started playing LoL last year. Great guide for a beginner like me and hopefully I can win a key too
Great guide man, I used to play dota in middle and high school then moved onto lol for a few years. This guide really refreshed things for me about Dota. Thanks

Played dotes for 6 years, dying for a key.

Been ages since I played dota 1, would like to try dota 2, very nice guide, especially about pulling, great memories =)
Always loved dota! May I please get a key kind sir?

Looks like you put a lot of work into this, always good to see people helping out those less experienced!
As basic as it gets for learning DotA. Even though I've been playing it for ages, I still learn something new everytime I read guides. Thanks man for refreshing my basic DotA knowledge. :D
Good guide. I definitely want to try out night stalker now cause of the day and night mechanic.
There's something you you might want to add to Roshan, but I don't know if it works in Dota 2:
M-moving illusions onto Roshan will not cause them to dispel, but they can tank Roshan and ranges heroes can freely hit Roshan until the illusions are gone.
Amazing guide for us DoTA noobies
Nice guide! I never played the original DotA and I barely touched HoN. I have played alot of LoL though. I am interested in DotA 2 lately though, already entered in to get a beta key.
Decent guide for new players, Not much of a use for a big player like myself though. GIVE ME THE KEY.
COUNT ME IN FOR A CHANCE AT THAT KEY
Great beginner's mechanics overview, by the way +1
Nice Guide. Too often people start writing these things and think people just should now stuff and not realize there are those who have never played the game before and need the extra help. Hope to see more.
For someone who has never played DOTA, but has played some LoL, I'm interested in trying out the game. At least now I don't feel as if it is a 100% completely different game, except from what I've seen is that the game snowballs quite hard.
Cool guide :D. I really hope i win the key!
Hello, friend. While I can't understand what I'm typing (a little too drunk), I trust that you will. If you want a fun friend to play Dota 2 with, I'm your man. I'm not usually drunk.

After 10,000+ hours of DotA, I'm still looking forward to DotA 2. Might as well try my luck for a key.
Nice guide, really looking forward to Dota2
Played dota for quite awhile. Looking forward to the Dota 2 release. Nice blog on the basics.
i dont know how i'm going to split my time between dota2 and sc2, and d3 as well. jesus stop making great games for a little while
Good read for the basics, was glad it showed pulling most of all. you would be surprised how many people don't really know how to do it.
Great write up, should help beginners a lot.
If it's not too much trouble, do you think your next guide could be a write-up on the intricacies of laning and drafting? I've played DotA a few years back casually and have a good grasp of the game's flow, but whenever I watch casts I'm absolutely stumped at the casters' analysis of what hero should get picked/banned next, and also their predictions of which heroes will go to which lane.
Yeah I'm not very good.
Now that everybody's been talking about DotA 2 and after seeing a bunch of vids/pics of the game, I have to say I'm actually surprisingly looking forward to it. Lol, I started playing DotA back in the W3: Reign of Chaos so I still remember the good old days of HOSTING shenanigans and moments where people would be buying recipes thinking they gave stats. And I'm CONVINCED I started the Rikimaru trend of getting Diffusal Blade, but that's a different story for a different day I suppose.
Anyways.. I Ended up becoming a beta-tester for new DotA patches that were periodically coming out back in 2007ish till about 2008. Sadly I kinda got kicked out after showing off new patches to friends of mines so that and the fact that the community started dieing down in terms of people, skill, and "manners", led to me quitting DotA about a year and a half later (About 6 years of playing). No matter how good DotA 2 is though, nothing will ever beat the EARLY days of W3 DotA!
Haha, well... I planned on saying a few words about the blog post but after I began writing a few things about DotA I really got hit with nostalgia . So good job on writing about the basics and I'll stop here before I write a whole blog post myself
Awesome read, will be looking forward to future posts by you sir.

nice writeup for noobies, very concise guide.

I actually haven't touched actual DotA since for nearly 4 years, so this really brings me back. HoN just doesn't carry the same feeling

Thanks for this great guide!

Hey nice guide. Can illusions still block roshan, they dont attack it they just tank roshan hits.
EDIT if you're doing another back to the basics guide, i have an idea of doing how to last hit in lanes, when to use spells to farm etc.
Nice guide ... Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the guide! Great insight on how the game works at a basic level
Thanks for this guide. It's really nice for people who are just getting started on DotA.
Nice one ! I have always neglected the value of creepstacking and when i pull then only on the very basic positions. Really liked the two videos and i think i will play around a bit more with creeps in the future. Doesn't seem to be hard at all and i see where this could be very valuable.
very nice guide
especially liked the way you got the lane creeps to fight the 2nd camp - id notthought of that!
Heres hoping for a key
One thing you didnt do was indicate which creep camps are hardest and which are easiest. I remember my first jungle experience when i attacked the hardest stack in jungle at lvl1 and thought this game is broken
Great guide, Bumblebee! It describes a basic level of DotA to all players. One thing you should mention is that it is always preferable to destroy the melee barracks rather than the ranged barracks because the super melee creeps that spawn have a larger effect than the super ranged creep.
Another suggestion might be adding a section of juking paths, but I think this could get complicated towards new players.
I have played dota for like 4 years and I still didn't know the respawn time of roshan. Oh well, you learn something new everyday. Great guide!
Great post, can't wait for the sequel to the best MOBA of all time!
Nice guide. I just wish every pubbie could read this.
It is nice to have concrete example of creep pulling. Also I did learn that you needed to kill Roshan 3 times to get cheese. I thought it was a modification for a previous patch that had been removed some patches after, because I got a cheese one time and never again. I can't remember if we killed Roshan more than 3 times this game though
Nice guide!
IMHO
1) Give a little something on team strategies. I.e. turtle > gank > push > turtle etc. 2) Explain some basic laning. I.e. 2-1-2 - 1-1-3 - 2-1-1-jungle etc. 3) Explain some basic picks and roles. I.e. Carry, support, babysit, roam, tank, initiator etc.
This helps newcomers and intermediaries to get over some early hurdles and spare themselves a bunch of flames and complaints --> better community
And... crossing fingers for key =)

keep them coming, these guides are helping alot.

Thanks for the guide! I played DotA back in the Wc3 days, Omniknight goooooo!

Great writeup for the newer players of DotA, hope i win!
really good guide, hope to see more from u soon!
a very well-written guide! thank you
how often does it change from night to day? every minute? every two minutes?
nice introductory blog, i really like what you guys are doing with these, i had no idea TL harbored so many dota fans, so blogs like flamewheel's came as a bit of a shock. keep'em coming.
pretty good guide for new players :p
enjoyed it, thanks
EDIT: just a small typo in this paragraph But doing a 2-1-2 set up with the solomiddle is not the only way to do it. There are heroes in the game that can utilize the jungle very efficiently and create sort of a 1-1-2 scenario where you have to solo lanes. You could also be tri-laning a hero to get two solo lanes too, which would be a 1-1-3 scenario.
thanks for this guide, really enjoyed it
Awesome guide. I play LoL and some HoN but I've never touched DotA. Cool to learn some of the basics and how they are the same and different from the other games. Hope I get a chance to check out the beta.
a good guide to the basics of Dota. Well written, will probably be my go-to guide when trying to teach players about the game
Oh! That was a nice video (pulling/stacking).
But I think you could give some more insight on the runes part, I heard a friend say it's not random. There's a sequence you can check the first runes, and then you can tell where the next one will appear.
Amazing guide bumble! This will be a good point to start for people that are new to the genre. On the other hand i think there's a lot of people that have played some kind of DotA-like game but not too much of real dota (like me, i played some dota but never learned how to really play, but i have played fair amount of HoN and LoL), so, could you write a guide focusing more on the in-depht picking and laning phase? i think that would be much needed for tons of people trying to move into DotA2 Also i think you should try to edit the time of the pulls for the videos, instead of pointing the clock with the mouse, because at least on my netbook i couldnt even tell what was the time. P.S: I learned at least why roshan drop the cheese, i thought it was random lol, also, GIMME THE KEYYYYY
Nice guide, it is sure to explain concepts to new players to the dota-genre or differentiate dota from its counterparts. I hope flamewheel does make that laning phase guide. Laning has so much depth to it!

Awesome guide! Every post you make like this just makes me want Dota 2 even more ><
This is a very nice guide. It covers the space between the players who know their way around your run of the mill DotA-like and the players who can play DotA quite well. I think it is great to see these concepts being put together in a concise guide here. Thank you.
I think the guide explains the game perfectly for a new Dota player. I play Dota since a long long time now, and i didnt even know that killing rax gives less bounty for the enemy when they kill creeps :D Nice to know, funny that I can still learn stuff after, I dont know 4-5 years playing (Dont know exactly)
Great write-up, I especially enjoyed the pulling guide, I've been playing DotA for over 5 years now but had never actually bothered trying double pulls by tango'ing a tree like that. I'm off to try this out right away! :D
Good guide, enjoyed the read. Also crossing thumbs for the key! :D
Good guide, keep going.
Btw, I think you should also post your articles in the dota2 section.
nice guide for a new dotaer. i expect more guide posts
great guide for anyone starting the game or even for those that have played dota before. The jungle pulling part was very informative for me since I could never get the timings right.
Post 183 here I come! (jk). Nice guide, read it all even though I've played dota for years, very easy and enjoyable read. You could have done a segment showing a triple pull on the sentinel camp just for cool points. Also sometimes an "imperfect" pull of only 3 melee creeps is better if you're a support pulling because it means more of your creeps will die = less exp for the enemy.
Quite nice guide, Unfortunatelly omni isn't used in competitive games....
Wow Really nice guide. Im really looking forward to this game hopefully will be able to play it if i get a key :D

People should stop reading all these specific guides, instead just go and play HoN / LoL, they have alot of the same elements, start off with LoL if you havent played a MOBA before, thats the best way to get a head start on all the other new people out there
Thanks for writing this guide. Made me understand about the basics to DotA a ot more now

I was in a game which both sides have mega creeps. Occasionally there are heroes which can stop megacreeps, as far as I recall.
I could imagine how useful such a guide would be to newcomers. Thumbs up for generating content and interest in the game as well!!
Sweet intro. Dota seems like an insanely hard game to play, but guides like this make it a lot more accessible to everyone ^_^
Nice guide I haven't played dota in so long I forgot the exact time for pulls.
great guide. thanks so much for all your contributions! keep it up! bringing fresh players into the game is what its all about.

Great guide for the newer players, look forward to any more future guides, also great to see you doing these beta key giveaways!

Good guide, but i feel like last-hitting/denying should have been mentioned as well.
Nice blog ! I would not say that creep pulling is part of basic dota knowledge But it is indeed a core mechanic of thé game. Looking forward to meet some liquidians on dota2 !

DOTA from WC3 was one of the funnest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Playing it for years in and out of WoW, I got to experience how it evolved from developer to developer. Icefrog was a champ, he championed balancing rather than adding stupid flash like HoN has done. More power to him and I KNOW DOTA2 will outclass HoN, it's because of who's behind it.
Great guide/blog. This will help people that come from LoL or people that are completely new to DotA a lot.
I hope a lot of people get to play DotA2 since playing DotA was an amazing experience for me.

That means post #3 (which in reality is post 2 because the OP counts as post 1) has won the contest! Congratulations to Taanstafl, I'll send you your key right now.

Wow, thanks everyone. Fun fact: this contest was held, almost to the day (off by one), on the anniversary of the last time I won something on TL (I won a shirt in one of the weekly contests). Clearly, their random number generator is smiling down on me. Thanks Nazgul!

Great guide, thanks for the work you put in!
Could you give a list of times when to attack the creeps to pull them or stack them for Radiant and Dire?
