I finally broke into Master league in season 4 playing as Zerg. Zerg is a great race - don't get me wrong. But at times I find myself raging over the silliest things. Here's what Zerg comes down to: What is my opponent doing? Okay, how do I stop this while making as many drones as possible, so I can run him over in the lategame? Zerg is a difficult race, but to me, it was just too one-dimensional. I want strategy, I want variety, I want micro!
It took me almost three seasons as a Zerg player to come to that conclusion. I broke into Master league that season and only played one game - I was on a crappy computer and didn't want to risk ruining my MMR, plus I liked looking at that shiny little Master's symbol.
I'm now in the process of switching to Terran - I love the race. It's so versatile, and so incredibly difficult! Yeah, I said it. A zerg player, calling the Terran race difficult. But Zerg is difficult too- but for different reasons. A good zerg player needs to know when he is safe to drone, and when he needs to be making units. When he needs to expand, and when he needs to sit back and use his advantage in tech, or army size. A terran player doesn't have to worry about when to make SCVs - he should always have them in production. He also doesn't have to worry about when to make an army - he should always have army queued in all of his production facilities. What he does have to worry about, however, is micro, unit composition, and maneuvering of his units across the battlefield so that he doesn't get caught unseiged and overrun.
As I'm in the process of switching from Z to T, I find myself falling in love with marine tank. I love the strategic placement of tanks, the slow-choke pushing across the map, and the multi-pronged drops on opponents bases. I watched a replay of a TvZ that I won a few hours ago where I simultaneously managed to drop his third, his main, his natural, all while scanning and moving forward onto his creep with my main force and a bunch of seige tanks. Watching from his view, he had four pinging !!!!! marks on his map at once. As a Zerg player, I know how alarming and disorienting that is.
I encounter some BM from time to time - actually, pretty often. Which is surprising considering how standard I try to play. Usually the BM is from Zerg players calling Terran OP, which I usually just laugh off. I even messaged a guy once after a game and tried to help him out, saying I felt his pain. We ended up becoming friends and playing a few practice games. Yay friendship.
Anyways, on to the battle report. I've never done one of these before, so it should be interesting. But it ends in some pretty funny BM Karma.
We start off our battle on the lovely Cloud Kingdom LE, a map which I hated as Zerg, but I'm starting to really enjoy as Terran.
Aw yeah, it's me! Wishing my Zerg opponent some fun!
I scout a hatch first build, but no response from my opponent
I decide to open up reactor hellion - even though I usually only make four and immediately swap off for a barracks. I've been using a 3-rax factory seige-tank marine stim push. No idea if its actually a legit build, and TvZ is by far my worst matchup so it's probably not.. but it works in diamond!
Made four hellions, moving my expansion down and starting siege tanks!
At this point, my hellions scouted roaches. This was fine, as I never intended to stay on hellions anyways. I didn't want to run in and sacrifice them, so I held them at a watchtower and prevented map vision instead. It turns out my opponent only made a few roaches to hold me off, and then switched into infestor/ling off 3 base.
I moved out for my marine/tank stim timing attack, and as usual I botched my siege/unsiege micro, and ended up losing most of my army, but I took out his third and some drones!
Sorry buddy, I just couldn't let ya keep it up
I'm still on two base, but so is he! I'm feeling okay about this trade, as I'm working on my upgrades and now have medivacs to do some multi-prong aggression. Cool! I drop a CC near the rocks by my natural and begin to sneak my tanks up to provide a larger wall off of siege tanks.
After a really long game, about 35 minutes later, my opponent eventually overwhelms me. However, I do manage to land a nuke that killed 37 of his drones. Pretty awesome. I was definitely still in this game, but his army was just too large for me to manage. However, I was try-harding until the end, because I really didn't know how many drones he had left. I know Terran can make some sick comebacks if you just play smart! So I was being cautious, kept my units alive, when finally he came crashing into my third and destroyed a bunch of my stuff. In my head I thought, "Yeah, this is probably over", but I stuck with it and killed another two hatcheries. Then I got this nice little message!
Okay man, really?
I was almost more offended by the fact that he ignored my hf, and then said nothing all game and offensive gg's me. What an ass! So this only makes me want to stick it out even more. I killed a bunch of his ultralisks with my ghosts. The game was definitely still close! But then... the broods came rolling in and destroyed the rest of my army.
At this point, I get a little "ding" notification on the right side of my screen. I look at the clock. Holy shit, it's almost 6am. The notification says, "The system is shutting down in 5 minutes". Instinctively, I alt-tabbed to make sure my computer wasn't doing some kind of stupid auto-update thing and shutting down on me (it does that, pretty often!). But I couldn't find anything. Then I tabbed back into the game to find this zerg still cleaning up my buildings. Ding! 3 minutes until the system shut down.
GENIUS IDEA ENGAGED.
I lift all of my buildings and send them to opposite corners of the map.
GO GO FLOAT FLOAT!!
My opponent is baffled, he doesn't know what to do. So he resorts to being manner.
Good try man.
I was having none of it.
The system shut down with one of my buildings still floating. DRAW!
Apparently, BM Karma bites you in the ass sometimes!
