So over the course of the weekend I've been receiving a lot of criticism for my play and being put to blame for EG's seemingly disappointing second place finish in the RaidCall Dota 2 League.
I don't mind criticism, I can always either choose to ignore it or if it's reasonable and constructive, I can actually take it to heart. That's how people develope themselves and I am no different.
I don't mind being the scapegoat. I've worked as the lightning rod of the old MYM-team countless times over the years and know that sometimes someone needs to be put to blame.
I don't mind that the community is full of know-it-alls and people who likes to think that they have the necessary insight to pass judgement on how, what and why. Everyone's seemingly an expert. It's been like that forever, and I doubt it will ever change.
And yet it never seizes to amaze me just how stupid a majority of the people who utters their opinion are. Or at least how little they think and analyze before speaking up. You would think that since they're not the best at the game and thus can't pride themselves, their name and online identity on that merit, they would instead try their hardest not to come off as rambling fools and instead actually take pride in the opinions they spew out. I guess not?
Alright, so for the sake of self-insight and not just throw this off as yet another "it's not me, it's them!"-excuse, I'll be honest and admit that this has possibly been one of the worst periods in terms of my ingame play. I won't deny it as it's painfully obvious and sure enough, I can't really take pride in much of the play I did over the weekend. Sure, there's reasons from outside of the game that affects these things, but there always will be and I'm not one to use them as an excuse. I did not play good.
However, the accusations and reasonings coming from the community just portrays a bunch of dense people with an inability to think on their own two feet.
Let's bring some of the more popular ones up and address them accordingly:
First off, a lot of people are fast at comparing results between this weekend and the week prior where Universe played in my stead.
"The picks were horrible and his leadership/way of calling the shots is bad"
- Fear has been acting as the captain for over a month now and both picks and leadership has been passed on to him entirely. And while I'm sure the team played a much better tournament in the Root Avermedia Cup, I also think it's safe to say that the lineups and matchups EG got in that particular tournament severely outweights the ones we ended up with in the playoffs this weekend. In comparison, half the EG lineups comprised of Sven, Magnus and Wisp in the same lineup in the Root Avermedia Cup where as in the playoffs of RaidCall D2L, we let Empire have their dreamlineups 4 out of 5 games in return for... just about nothing. Could we have won with our picks anyways? Sure. Did we make it a lot harder on ourselves than we had to? I think so. Fact of the matter is, teams were unprepared for Magnus and Sven 10 days ago. A week later, everyone is doing it. And as I'm not currently captaining the team so I don't know why I would be singled out for neither picks nor leadership. It really can't be all that hard seeing who's Blue/Pink or on top of the teamroster during the draft.
"Maelk lost them the game with X hero"
- "Maelk mid QoP" has suddenly become the most popular thing to say since "0-20 Venomancer". And I suppose this is partially because of the lack of insight or overview from Ayesee and Draskyl, the casting-duo of the tournament. In our second game against ZERO, I had the pleasure of soloing Queen of Pain middle playing as Dire. Now, the hottest trend as Radiant is to pull the middlespot so to completely deny entire waves of experience from the Dire's middlelane. Something that was given all too little attention from the casters. Admittedly I played it overly aggressive from level 1 and opted for Shadowstrike over Blink and was punished by a Rhasta with an Invisibility Rune combined with KotL's Illuminate and Magnus' Skewer on level 1. That alone doesn't necessarily lose you the lane, although Magnus got the firstblood thus having a Bottle right away. What sealed the deal was the fact that Keeper of the Light pulled three full creepwaves before the 3 minute-mark allowing Magnus to be level 4 against a level 2 Queen of Pain. With the nonstop neutralcamp pulling from both Rhasta and Keeper of the Light, they were soon both level 6 and proceeded to push both midtowers with no help to be had from anyone on my team (because Dark Seer also lost his lane terribly and no AoE-spells on our supports). With the huge level- and goldadvantage that they now possessed, Rhasta had himself a fairly early Blink Dagger and as any seasoned player would know, going out on your own was no longer an option, even for a Queen of Pain.
What I don't get is why nobody flamed the shit out of Scandal when he lost his lane just as hard as Templar Assassin, again because of the pulls. Or when Sneyking got ganked continously and his team ended up losing 30-4, where was the critics then? Or, if we're sticking to just targetting EG-players, when DeMoN's Magnus lost his lane so hard to Sneyking's solo Bounty Hunter who proceeded to gank every lane and win the game singlehandedly. Or his Bounty Hunter against Funn1k's Clinkz. Or Fear's Clinkz against Funn1k's Dark Seer for that matter. All were sololanes who weren't even ganked nor pulled for yet those lanelosses alone cost us the game. Personally I think it's because of the surprise in me getting to play a solo mid for once thus everyone pays a lot of attention to how that's going to pan out having no regard for the circumstances surrounding it. Cause apparently when it's someone who solo's on a daily basis, it's okay to lose your lane so hard that you ultimately lose the entire game. And before anyone suggests otherwise, I'm not actually blaming Fear, DeMoN, Scandal or Sneyking for that matter, for losing their lanes, cause I know the reasons behind it - and it's perfectly justified.
Another good comment I read a few times, was how I couldn't carry with Sven. The game in question is the first game against Empire in the Winnerbracket Finals, where I play a support (4/5) Sven in a trilane where we're meant to give Juggernaut the kills and the farm in a game Empire completely dominates after getting a 13-minute Orchid on Clinkz. I think I already said everything that needed to be said on that matter.
Of all the games this weekend, the one I regret the most and the only one I'm actually ashamed of, would be the Pandaren Brewmaster where I was completely off my game with his ultimate. That was an embarrassment. But like I mentioned earlier, I had a lot of flaws throughout the weekend with unnecessary deaths or slow spellusage, and I was definitely not playing on par. But then again, nobody was aside from Funn1k, the MVP of the tournament, and even then he had a very questionable Sandking. I'm not trying to make excuses for myself, I just don't think some of these critics are using their head. And if they are, I wish for them to get a new one for Christmas.
Anyways, it's the night before Dreamhack and I'll get some much needed sleep before meeting up with the guys tomorrow. I made a promise on Twitter, that I had all intentions of winning this Dreamhack, and I'm going to do my best to hold up to that promise.
Lastly, to those who continues to wish me off the team, I'm sorry, but I'm here to stay. I'll bleed blue for the Evil Geniuses throughout 2013 and I'll do everything in my power to get us on top. I don't care if you hate me, as long as you still support the team, just as I don't care if someone dislikes any of my teammates as long as they appreciate the team as a whole.

Taking level 1 shadow strike against Rhasta honestly isn't that overaggressive, a 200 damage nuke at level 1, almost everyone will make that mistake in hindsight imo.
Good luck at Dreamhack.
Also I have a question if you are willing to answer, There were some moments were you casted (Starladder qualifiers)are you going to cast more in the future?

I think anyone giving you shit about lineups/picks is pretty delusional. Like you said, Magnus and Sven combos were laughable a couple of weeks ago, now it's the hot thing to do.
I'm glad you're just going to keep on walking, forget the haters man they are superfluous, just keep on fighting and doing what you love! :D Good luck at Dreamhack.

Great post Maelk, you will always be one of my favorite players. I think the flames you have received over the past months have been largely unjustified or just made out of ignorance. I wish EG the best of luck at dreamhack!

Ohhhh so Fear WAS drafting for EG this entire time. I was wondering what was up...
Anyhow, I have faith in EG to win Dreamhack. I got my shiny pennant all ready for the tournament.
go maelk

On one hand, it's good that you addressed some of these things publicly but at the same time, the people who criticized you in the first place are not the kind of people that will read this and go "Hmm, you know he's absolutely right. I should really think before I speak next time". Those people are, simply put, trolls. It doesn't matter how well thought-out and intelligent your arguments are. They just want to be mad and pretend like they're better than everyone else, cause that's what they do.

Best of luck, and don't let hater get you down. I'm sure you know that the lol/dota scene *tends* to be much more vitriolic than most esports in general in terms of criticism (which is saying something), so chin up and glhf at DreamHack

One of the better ways to respond to criticism. You're a pro, your detractors are not. If you know something they don't (or a lot of somethings) letting them know what they don't know is a good way to take care of situations like this.
|
I love you Maelk! YOUDABES!
|
I respect your demeanor, play, and leadership. I approve of your way of letting off steam, but some people will never learn to think before they whine. Good luck at Dream Hacker, I'm rooting for you and the rest of EG!
|
I hope you can regain a great form rapidly and hopefully win Dreamhack. Criticism is always present and I think you're good enough to filter and take in the constructive ones. Good Luck!
|
Really impressed with this response, not that I've been following the drama much but from what I've gained from reading your post and its discussion, this was a really great way to deal with the critics.
|
You're a fucking legend, let haters hate. You were captain of MYM haha... People just don't understand how team games work. Keep strong Maelk you sexy beast.
|
Do your best to pull EG back up to its status, but stop assuming your critics are so brainless. This line of criticism has been around since before TI2, and it definitely is true you were not in good shape at that point. Whether or not you guys can get back to the top and stay there is another story.
|
Good luck Maelk, everyone goes through slumps sometimes! Don't let drama affect you and comeback strong yo.

The only EG I love is the one with Maelk in it.

This x100.
There are way too many people spouting opinions on things when they don't fully understand the what and why. If a criticism is being passed on someone and it isn't a pro player or a highly knowledgable well respected figure then it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Maelk legend, enough said. GO EG! <3

Even more respect for my favourite captain, well done.

GO EG! GO MAELK! Can't wait to watch you guys at Dreamhack. Everything in life can get rough at some points, so it's nice to see you soldiering on dude. Really hope you guys crush all the critics, and even if you don't, screw em! EG chose you guys for a reason, and I'm sure it was a hell of a good one. Unfortunately there will always be people who call out the smallest things without looking at a bigger picture. All you can do is play and fix the mistakes, and try to rise to that next level. Nothing wrong with bleeding blue.

Dude maelk you are awesome. Excellent response, popular pro players in the public eye always get extreme hate for any mistake or things going wrong that are out of the player's control. Also, in SC2 and Dota, it is common for EG to get irrational hate for not winning every tournament, or getting second, which is CRAZY. Keep bleeding blue and good luck at Dreamhack!

good luck maelk, although you are slumping, your experience as a captain is crucial to EG's success.

Good luck at DH, Maelk! Just gotta get Radiant side and it will be smooth sailing towards the DHW finals.

what you've never addressed once is your age.
it's a known fact that after a certain point, as you age you're not going to be as good as you once were a few years prior.
why? not only because reaction times are slower and you've developed habits and muscle memory for a different game/playstyle but because people have caught up and surpassed your skill level
slayers boxer being the primary example but we can also look at boxing, basketball, football, whatever
how old are you now jacob? you're not as old as boxer but havent you announced your retirement 3x now? do it for real. stop being like hitomi who always said "i'm quitting dota for real this time". at least he really did quit dota eventually.
bottom line is stop lying to yourself

Best of luck in Dreamhack, Maelk.
Last I checked, none of the haters are legends in their own right in Dota, so what do they know?

Maelk, you're great. The Maelk Award is something to be proud of. You got it because they feared you. Keep on being awesome.

There is a lot of people who support you, they just don't make such an effort in letting you and everyone else know because nothing's changed so they don't think about saying it. I'm glad to hear you're in a solid position on your team, you are maybe my favorite player.

It's not your play that people hate, it's you, your actions, your condescending ways and your sense of entitlement. Some of what you do could have been forgiven in the past but you are 26 now. It's time to act like a grown-up by treating everyone correctly, and that includes the community.
|
What the hell is this? Just ignore it. As long as you think you're doing well and the team wants you, who cares?

It probably wasn't meant like that but by hating on Ayesee and Draskyl for their lack of inside or overview (btw they pointed out that mid was pulling) you are not exactly beeing a shiny example to the dota community you just criticized. Even if they made a mistake there you shouldn't be the one blaming them for it. I don't know if you realized but caster also get a lot of shit (sometimes rightfull sometimes not) and i hate it when people that have no clue what it means to be a caster (hint: you) talk shit about f.e. draskyl who is, when it comes to dota insight, probably the best caster.
Yes i agree a lot of people should think more before they blame others. Maybe even you Maelk (although you mostly had a point when you did so i can't really blame you for it).

He wasn't hating on them. He has been nothing but respectful in his tones towards them. Denying 3 entire waves of creeps can basically screw anyone over. I expect I will be fixed for this is pretty much a Radiant vs Dire disadvantage. [Radiant can pull from any lane, while Dire can only pull from strong lane.]

Maelk is the right man for EG. The bad boy of DOTA with a real opinion and the confidence to defend it. I'd keep supporting that. Who does that remind me of?
Love him or hate him, I hope you stay for another year Maelk!

Haters always hate on successful people because they dont have what you have

Of course people will be harder on the big names in the community than they will for someone like Scandal who's relatively new in the lime-light (of Dota at least). Loda, for example, got just as much flak in Zenith.
You, Maelk, still get more praise than any of the other people mentioned in your post. I'd expect a grown man to be able to ignore those who clearly don't understand the game on your level and say silly things, as this post isn't going to change anything about the situation you're in. And instead it's just going to be pages of comments supporting you saying "yeah, you're the man," and still people on Reddit/jD/Twitch chat/Whatever will tell you to retire.

Well spoken sir and good luck. I would keep the community at a distance when it comes to subjects like this. The more you show it bothers you or respond, the more they will troll just to get the next response. Just trust yourself, your team and play as hard as you can.
I'll keep an eye out for your next event and sign in to the client, EG pennant equiped.

Mid pulling needs to be fixed. I'm not sure if it would be better to somehow add the option to Dire, or just remove it from the Radiant side. I think it could be really interesting in terms of the metagame to see what happens when both mid lanes are able to be pulled... think about it.
On the bottom lane, creep pulling (and jungle) for radiant allows for a defensive tri-lane from radiant vs. an offense tri-lane or suicide solo from dire. Flip this around for top lane. So would what happen in a lane where both teams have even access to pulling/jungle? I think there's a couple possibilities, but a more even tri-lane vs tri-lane situation mid means more roaming to top/bottom, more contesting of runes, and more early jungle ganks. Thoughts?

The reality is the most casters, in both SC and DOTA don't really have any high level playing experience.
Granted draksyl is probably a bit more knowledgeable about DOTA than, say moletrap about SC, but it's not much.

Most people were saying coL was the Western team with a chance to beat Na'Vi on LAN. They weren't being 'shat on' by the community unless you look at minority comments, which are negative about every team all the time.

Draskyl was a professional player for a while and just elected to take the casting route, so to compare his knowledge of Dota to Moletraps knowledge of sc2 is ridiculous.. There is absolutely no comparison. Back in the HoN glory days he was really well known on the pro scene. He has exceptional game knowledge. Ayesee, on the other hand has pretty mediocre game knowledge.. He has a really good tone and voice for casting.. But his game knowledge and general awareness are really mediocre. LD is better, but not by a lot.
My top 3 commentators right now I'd say are Tobi, Luminous (I'd like to see more out of him.. I dunno why he isn't casting leagues), and Draskyl. GoDz is also pretty decent, has some good analysis. I think GoDz + Draskyl would be a really, really good casting duo.
The others are mediocre.
As for this blog.. As the person said below me.. I'm not a fan of how it was worded either. The tone of it appears generally moody/snarky, and overly defensive.
Don't listen to the haters.. Just watch your replays, analyze, and work on your mistakes.
On a side note... I'm really not a fan of Fear on the captain role.... I think his picks are really mediocre, and he gives strong teams (cough* empire) their signature heroes far too often. (just general draft mistakes). I think he's been a significant problem on EG now. Don't get me wrong, his carry playing skills are top-tier, but I really dislike his strategic play with drafting.
I think for EG to be a serious top-tier contender.. They're going to need a new person on the captain role at the minimum.

I don't like the way you worded this blog, but I still like you and I love EG and I think ALL of you are amazing players and you guys just had a bad day. Kick ass at dreamhack!

see as soon as you say the words confirmation bias you automatically "win" any internet argument. since you get to use any evidence against your point and then say any one thing and immediately render all the overpowering evidence moot. so congrats on saying confirmation bias. despite being wrong.

'overpowering evidence' being you saying that people are mean to US teams. You can carry on adhering to this persecution complex all you want. I'm telling you that US teams (not named EG) don't get any more shit than EU teams do, believe it or not.

Too many people trying to flex their Psych 101 skills in this thread.

Oh, stop whining, Maelk. You honestly should know better than that. You played alright considering the circumstances, you know that, the team knows that, don't go public about people on the internet hating. That's just dumb. Won't change anything and it won't help now or in the future.

Good luck at Dreamhack.
I tried to explain to some others for you, before this post. Also, I thought the "Maelk award" thing was endearing. You were 0-20, but you won. It's not like Veno does much late game besides ult and gale. The only thing else he can do is some ward blocking. If team is going to waste focus on a support, then let them. I won a game earlier because I was doom and they kept wasting Hex and Devour on me while we had a super fat carry that was ignored.
The only time I thought you really messed up when you shouldn't have was that you missed what seemed like more than half your claps on Brew.
It's sad how many "commentators" can't look at the minimap while watching the game and see pulls happening when they have both teams vision.

There are always going to be haters. There's not that many of them, they just really like to yell at people. It's sad one of the most experienced pro players has to make posts like these to justify his play to them.
|
Good luck at Dreamhack. Dumb people are dumb, just ignore them.
|
After reading this, all i can is that i hope you improve and good luck to you and EG on future tournaments! One bad tournament wont ruin your career!
|
so you're saying that the dota2 community is dumb loud and wrong? that's an interesting theory
|
Seize is when you take something. Cease is when something ends.. This was like yelling at me when I read this, probably due to the part that says people speak without thinking.
There are some other small grammatical/spelling errors that bothered me, but I won't make excuses for why this reply is so worthless, my post will also have these errors.
On a more serious note.. I don't play or follow MOBA's, but if you're going to make a post like this, just come out and make your points, your points were very good. I just don't think your post needs to be interspersed with common cliche's like "I'm not going to make excuses". I understand that ultimately your point is that people on the internet are dumb and don't know what they're talking about. But you are also making excuses, i'ts okay. I would have liked if you made better arguments about why your topic name is universally true instead of seemingly just defending your own image.
If you actually think that the people criticizing you don't know what they're talking about, then why did you take the time to write this post?
If I were you, I would have used this opportunity to invite some strategic and high level discussion about the nuances of the game, which would not only make your point about why people shouldn't jump on the hate train (the band-wagon was full) but also serve the purpose of growth and progress of your game, instead your post comes off as immature to me, and I wouldn't count myself as part of your community. You were close a few times to SEIZING my interest, but instead you may have ensured that my interest is forever CEASED.

Good luck day 2, but if you don't perform then you'll just prove the critics right.

It would not prove anything. It would suggest that the critics are correct, but it is not proven.

just looking at this post and with the comments like "FUCK all the others who say your not great, and, who the fuck gives a fuck about their opinion anyway."- just WOW. The fact that you are making a post about how you feel about YOUR VIEWERS, in such a negative way hurts me as a person. it hurts so because you spent your time to rage at your viewers, and going as low as "i dont know how the majority people of people (that again, watch YOU PLAY) can be smart enough to walk on their own two feet!" this tells me and the majority of the people that watch you, what kind of person you really are.

GG Didn't you ever figure out you shouldn't write stuff when you're angry? Great PR I don't get why public people aren't allowed to be angry at their viewers. I obviously understand the importance of PR, but the truth is many in the community deserve to get flamed.

Agreed. Just because you are a viewer doesn't mean you are freely allowed to be rude and / or stupid and get away with it. As a viewer you are entitled to your opinion, but so is the public person. I'm quite annoyed at the fact that since they represent companies, and teams and stuff, public persons are supposed to be spineless, opinion-less brainwashed zombies that are just supposed to smile and nod through all the stuff their public position can put them through.
Also it was a well written and interesting blog, and I saw no insult to it. Just a man coming to terms with himself, and some of the less desirable portion of the community. And if that part of the community feels insulted, well let them have it, they had it coming anyway.
