Has anyone gotten lasik done on their eyes recently? If so, share your experience please.
I live in LA and I did some research and narrowed my options to two doctors
1. Korean doctor $1,200-2000
2. American doctor ~$6,500
I found the Korean doctor through yelp (lol) and he has very positive reviews. And obviously he is a lot cheaper.
Now the second doctor is probably the best Lasik surgeon in LA or close to it. He has much better credentials than the Korean doctor (Harvard, John Hopkins) and a LOT of celebrities and athletes go to him.
I'm thinking, if I'm stuck with one pair of eyes for the rest of my life, why the hell would I not go to the best doctor there is? However Lasik has been around for a while so maybe there really isn't much of a difference between the two places.
What does TL think?!

Not going to recommend anything but in my experience docs who come out of Hopkins are huge assholes. Not all of them are but they seem to prefer arrogant douchebags with little regard for patient care.

Is "Neither" an option?
LASIK should cost abooout $2000/eye, these days, from very good doctors. I'd shop around a bit more. Look for a place that offers a lifetime guarantee on work.

You guys bring up fair points. I will probably look around some more. I just know that some doctors might charge premium price just because they are located in a rich neighborhood (Beverly Hills).

I got it done about two years ago now and it cost me $3500 and is guaranteed for life. I get free eye exams every year and if anything changes they will touch it up for free.
Lasik was probably the best decision I have ever made, I see 20/15 now and will most likely never need glasses or contacts ever again. I live in Canada and I got mine done at Lasik MD. Even if the cost is more than what I paid, Lasik is easily worth every penny. You will not regret it.

$6500 seems very high. I got mine done for $3400 (1700 per eye), from one of the best doctors around the the Kansas City MO area. That included followup exams for a year. Because of recent laws had to acquire antibiotic/steroid drops myself but insurance helped cover it. I would definitely recommend looking around a little more.
Edit: Man guy above me got a great deal. Jealous.

Wow, glad to hear things worked out great for you, definitely reassuring.

Korean surgery like this is always better than American.

My advice to people considering Lasik is:
Get it done from a reputable doctor in (or from) Asia. I did a LOT of research and the bottom line is that given the same equipment/technology, precedures done in Asia (especially China and India) will produce better results.
If you want to get a booking from the best Lasik MDs in China you need to book almost 6 months in advance because their long-term results are very good, simply because they perform the same number of procedures in two week as their western counterparts do in a year.
Practice makes perfect:D

Want show me some evidence of this better results?
Edit:
Actually curious on the literature regarding LASIK surgery since long term outcomes weren't well known and thus a concern.

Just curious, Lasik MD generally advertises as little as $450/eye; what was the resulting factor in a $3500 bill?

I want to do it, but a coworker in my office had a really bad experience with lasik and I'm worried. I'm not sure how they screwed up, but they screwed up. If I do get it I'll wait til next year so I can max out my flexible spending account again so it's tax deductible... I maxed out mine this year on invisalign. My teeth are 95% straight but a single tooth is moderately crooked (not even that bad), but it's bothered me forever... especially since other people not having perfectly straight teeth is super unattractive to me.
Eyes would be more useful though, especially while driving... I can never see the street signs until closer up. Not at the point it's dangerous or anything... but it's annoying.

Loloolol I thought we were talking about "cosmetic surgery" for some reason. Are Korean doctors especially reknown for the "non-plastic" kind of eye surgery as well?
|
What people are saying is true. An american doctor or a clinic like Lasik MD usually does a wonderful job, but the $6500 you have been quoted is far above what you can get for an equally competent procedure.

hey just adding my two cents:
I had lasik done a year ago, in ottawa, canada. My bill came to 4k for the two eyes. The advertised price of 450$ an eye only applies in the simplest of cases. My experience speaking with other has shown me that the majority of surgeries range from 3.5-6k. I had my surgery done by the best place in town, called Lasik MD. They are a very very large chain, and I do not regret anything.
I think if you're serious about getting eye surgery, you should NOT look for the cheapest price. They are leaders for a reason, and sure, you're paying more for the name, but I think it is worth it. Think about it as an investment in your eyes. I hated glasses, and I finally had it done.
Anyways, if you have more questions, pm me directly as I probably won't keep tuned to this thread.

Yes they do advertise that. Mine was so much more because I had extremely bad eye sight with astigmatism in both eyes. They had to use a different surgical procedure for me which is why I also have it guaranteed for life. A larger portion of my cornea was removed in order for the surgery to work.
It will cost you $450 an eye only if your eyes meet specific criteria, which rarely happens.

Best advice is go to someone who does this procedure very frequently. My doctor had done 10,000 procedures in his lifetime (at least) and the other doctors in his office had done the same or more. Do not pay more than $4,000 total and make sure that shit is guaranteed.

Just anecedotal and casual research (mostly from reviews) evidence. You don't really expect peer reviewed journal evidence do you? If I do ever go back to that hospital I'll take a picture of their long-term (5+ years) complication rate chart. Every Lasik MD there are ranked on the chart, and even the worst ranked optometrist had a very low 5-year complication rate (0.37%). You can do some research regarding this, but from memory in Western countries the complication rate hovers around ~1%.
The fact that they make their doctors compete with each other by public posting results (however cherry-picked or sugar-coated they might be) should make you trust in the familiarity and experience of these doctors. After all, competition motivates and begets improvement, ultimately benefiting the patients.

wish the lasik here guarantee for life. not too sure why there's a big difference in each of the lasik md offices. i went to one in toronto. when i went in to get more info and the eye check, the 2 main reasons that i didnt end going through were: 1)it wasn't guaranteed, as in if you eyes get bad again, u pay again to have the procedure done 2) they said there was a chance that 25% will come back
and ya, it is never 450 lol, i mean lasik usually attract people who have really bad eyes.

Lasik might not be for life, but isn't it guaranteed to give you at least 15+ years of good vision?
