Grit - Long Term Success
So I was listening to a TED talk this morning and this lady who was originally a strategic consultant, then went into teaching kids maths had a realization. She saw that the smartest students didn't always perform the best and the not so smart students usually did pretty good. She wanted to understand why and did a psychology degree studying this exact thing.
She figured out that it was "grit" that directly translated into performance. It didn't matter how smart someone was, it didn't matter how many struggles they had, the people (and they did studies in everything from military camps to teachers in tough areas) that had the grit, the long term determination that they would succeed always came out better, no matter where they started.
This is an important life lesson and one that is easily forgotten. There is a reason why people such has Nelson Mandela through all struggles, came out and to lead more than a nation. There is a reason why Bill Gates is now one of the richest men in the world. They both set themselves a target, and kept striving no matter how hard the progress was. This can be applied to anything, if you want to do better at university, if you want to get better at a game, if you want to get better at relationships or at communication, you need to set yourself a goal or an outcome and achieve it, no questions asked.
And when the going gets tough, don't make up any excuses, solve the problem then keep on trucking. Do this, and you will achieve absolutely anything. Think of life as a long term marathon and not a short term sprint. Now think of something you can do right now and do it. Get the ball rolling.
