i don't know if there are any states like montanna were you need to fill up at every gas station because you don't know when you'll find the next one but you should be fine.
No one is going to kill you lol. Though, most small town people tend to be fairly conservative, if that is what you mean. That doesn't make them racist, and you shouldn't assume that they are, you'll be fine.

I think we'll renting a one way car. Just for the kick of it, my gf and I are both having internship in the west coast and we thought it'll be cool to drive back to Boston in a span of 10 days.
It can be very difficult to rent a car and drive it cross-country... I think most rental agreements have a stipulation that you can't cross the Mississippi river... I would research this carefully before obligating yourself in any way. Going for a 10 day drive just for the kick of it seems like a decision you might regret, though. So much of that trip is through nothingsville.
Yeah i'd check into the rental car company first. And you're probably going to get super bored unless you do something fun along the way pretty much every day. And you might want to kill your gf after being in a car with her for ten days. Stop by chicago evan :D
I went from New Jersey to San Francisco by way of New Mexico, so I can't speak for your whole way, but from Indiana eastward you'll be fine, and I'd assume folks west of that are hospitable as well.

Personally, driving through endless plains was surreal for me in its own way. There's nowhere around where I live that you can see for 20 miles pretty much all around you. If you can find the odd hill in the middle of those plains, you can even start to see the curvature of the earth.
i mean, i know it is a tired trope, but i could at least understand being a little hesitent about the south if you are not white... but to be afraid of that about areas you dont even know at all?? might wanna rethink who is being a bit unfair (or even bigoted) here...

the south is scary af dude when i was little and we drove across mississippi, it was always lock the doors, drive all night so we wouldn't have to stop there. especially in the smaller areas you can see some scary things
up north on the other hand, kinda meh. But don't be fooled into thinking that it's not a valid concern

Ok what the fuck. The south isn't some super-hostile hellzone where everybody and their mothers fly Confederate flags and drive big trucks with a shotgun and white cloak in the back. If you're Asian, people will stare at you because there are no Asians there for some reason. Sometimes you'll run into a lone idiot who will chew you out for being "un-American" or some shit if you have an accent and you aren't white, but that's about it. Maaaybe you'll run into a gang or a racist that is actually dangerous, but that's like running into a bear up north or something. Just stay out of the obvious bad places and you'll be fine.
Drove from Durham, North Carolina to Portland, Oregon. 3300 miles, four days, 12-13 hours each day.
It's safe. And although there is a lot of nothing in the middle e.g. Kansas and Wyoming, it's still pretty fun if you are with the right people.
EDIT: Plan your trips well so you are not sleeping in some sketchy town out in the middle of nowhere. I stayed in St. Louis, Denver, and Salt Lake City.

he said nothing at all about the south, so i am not sure why youre bringing up your story trying to justify something he didnt say. also his original statement was dumb and ignorant as fuck. how the hell can you even wonder about getting hurt by racists if you dont even know anything about the area?? so stupid
I'm asian and live in the south so I can provide some advice on how to avoid being lynched by an angry mob of KKK. The trick is, you figure out what football team they like and then shit talk their rival team (if you don't know and you're not in Alabama its safe to say 'Bama) They'll instantly invite you to a barbecue.
You don't have much to worry about in terms of racists, but you better watch out for MOOSE! those things will straight mess you up. If you see one, do not go up and take a picture next to it, or even a video for instagram because it will rob you, steal your car, and then come back and trample you. Dont mess with Moose. But besides that (and bears), you aint got not none problems for sure!
cross country road trips are an american tradition. go for it. the little diners where truckers stop are the nicest places ever. 10 days seems a bit much tho. most of the country is full of nothing.

Wyoming's actually pretty beautiful once the mountains start coming up.
I have been living in the south of the US now for 3 weeks and I feel very very safe. So I dunno why you would feel unsafe just driving anywhere. Obviously going for a walk at 3 am in the ghetto of a town isnt a good idea. Just use your common sense.
Just don't try to stay in Sac City, Iowa and you'll be just fine. That place was creepy as fuck. People took pictures of me, my family, and then went outside the diner we were eating at and took pictures of the van. Fuck that place. lol Other than that though I've never had any trouble

Yep, a lot of "nowhere" places are beautiful, including Wyoming.

You know there are inly two escalators in all of Wyoming? Both of them are in a bank. In the STATE. That is crazy.
Anyway, people who want to drive across the country need to read this article. It is awesome.

People in Idaho/North Dakota are questionable folk (maybe a little weird and overly-secluded), but other than that, it's not like you're in the South or something. Once you hit Minnesota, you'll have smooth sailing from there.
A few tips on traveling in the north:
Wyoming can be pretty beautiful, but once you get into the eastern part of the state and into North Dakota, there is fucking NOTHING there, so be prepared.
When you're in Idaho/Wyoming/ND/etc, you need to fill up at every gas station you hit.
If you're traveling in the summer, it'll quite hot and, once you get into Minnesota/Wisconsin, quite humid. Be prepared.
If you're actually traveling in the northern part of the states, watch for animals. Deer are most likely, and you'll probably see a lot of 'em. Will fuck up your car worse than you fuck up the deer. Don't fuck with a moose, and don't gawk at a bear, either. Random fact: Minnesota has a very large bobcat population and the biggest Timberwolf population outside of Alaska in the country, so there are actually dangerous animals in the northern part of the state.
Once you get out of Minnesota and partway through Wisconsin, you'll be out of the "middle of nowhere zone where there's a gas station once every 200 miles". Well, that doesn't even happen in Minnesota, but once you're in southern Wisconsin, you're in a generally more urban area.

I had a friend from Senegal who lived in DC for a couple years after leaving Africa. He was dirtpoor and had gotten clothes from salvation army. They gave him this Dallas Cowboys cap that he was proudly sporting, thinking it gave him the 'murican looks.
The first few weeks he didnt get why people were giving him dirty looks all day everyday. Until some security guy from a random museum told him that the 'boys were the skins' racial enemy :D
but seriously, op is either trolling or largely ignorant. Youre not crossing Darfour or Burma...Your traveling 'muricah on 8 lanes highways...

US road trips are the best!!
8-lane highways? I doubt you'll see those anywhere except southern California, the Northeast, and maybe a few other highly urbanized areas? Won't see any of those in the northern part of the country.

my girlfriend did a similar drive from vancouver, WA to milwaukee, WI. she did it in 3 days and that's including stopping in pullman at WSU from some famous ice cream shop, taking photos in front of mt rushmore (which i guess is a little underwhelming? lol). and a couple other minor stops. like others have said, once you get into minnesota you're fine. also, i was surprised at how populated milwaukee was. just watch out for the left lane exits. for some reason they are all over the place in the northern midwest.

pretty sure(as in I'd bet my life on it.) that you can easily travel through any half way "modernized" part of the country and be safe. Assuming you aren't acting like a complete prick to begin with. Besides anymore you hear more about "racially" motivated violence in police brutality then some random racist and his friends.
