Hello TL
Lately I've been reminiscing about my teenage years, and I'm starting to wonder if I've noticed a general trend of games getting worse/more casual and more about $$$ than gameplay.
Comparing games like Old WoW, wc3, bw, cs, even the old Call of duty/medal of honor and unreal tournament/quake games... nowadays gaming seems to be completely monetised and boring, there aren't really any solid developers anymore - personally I used to know like a core set of games that if I saw on someone's xfire profile that they had played/been playing then I knew they played respectable games.
However recently I've realised that many games such as League of legends and team fortress 2 have been completely corrupted by mass ingame items and a generally noobish playerbase
What do you guys think?

I think you are being silly, as much as i love my favorite games of old you just don't remember all the crap that was around very well anymore.

Back when the games were pure and better, before all these casuals and candy crush scum got involved. Back in my day we had quake and you got the rocket launcher and you were happy. Happy with just the rocket launcher. You kids don’t know anything about real gaming.
Only a few games now a days are good enough to even have the title of “video game”. I know you want to know what they are, but you likely haven’t heard of them. They are made by independent studios and can only run on older operating systems that are pure and better. You likely would appericate how good they are anyways, since kinda like that Dota game and its not really a pure game.
…..Yeah, there are just more games. Nothing has changed that much. The only thing that changed was that we got older.

you aren't wrong about the casual trend, everything else seems like your typical nostalgia whining. I don't mean to dismiss your feels, but...how is league of legends corrupted by "mass ingame items"? that game has plenty of obnoxious shit, including the issues with people feeling pressured to buy champions for different reasons, but none of it revolves around people's strange desire to waste $20 on glorified palette swaps.
saying there aren't any solid developers anymore is by far the biggest sign of nostalgia whining. I'm not saying it's wrong if you're just falling away from gaming in general, you're allowed that opinion but how do you not log on to steam and just marvel at all the good-looking shit that you don't even have enough time to play?
|
It's all perspective. Back when WoW was first released, people were complaining about how much worse games had become when compared to the nineties. Ten years from now, people will complain that the new games are bad compared to League, Call of Duty and farmville. If you ask me, gaming is as much fun as it has ever been, with many great and enjoyable games coming out each year.

Lets be clear, the games we love are not going away, there are just more types of games being made for different types of players. Casual players, as much as I hate that term, make up a group that likes to play a specific type of game. But companies are still going to make games for you because they want your money and they can’t get it with the “casual focused games”.
It just more games. Little to nothing has changed. We still have the games we love.

What do you guys think? Things have gotten actually better recently. I'm very happy with the revival of PC Gaming and all the independent developers. Some genres had fallen into obscurity and are revived by small developers, which I think is a really awesome development.

I agree salema games are much too casual and developers trying to appeal to more customers by making their games worse and monetize so they can continue making games is awful. Consider even Nintendo, a former bastion of hardcore gaming, is now making this: Splatoon!!
Actually that game looks amazing. If I had a WiiU....

Hello Judgy McJudgerson
Also that title is so hyperbolic wow

I like current gaming era more than the one before, there are a lot of quality indie games and still some good AAA games. However I have to admit none of those games will replace my childhood ones in my heart. I remember the shareware CD-rom with the first 10 levels of doom on it, almost all the other games on it were utter garbage.

I think the moment the internet became a part of console gaming it all went downhill.
But meh, you could say the same thing about old movies. Its what happens when a shit load of money can be made.
|
And since when were games not about money?
I think games today are actually LESS about money, just look at indie games.
