Hold my pint, I need to fight this guy on Twitter
by eSports Journalist Barry Climbdown
Yeah here I go, rolling up my sleeves. Let me just take off my glasses here and set them down on this shelf I had made especially for resting them on when I am about to engage in all-out war on Twitter. OK, I’m ready. Let’s post!
But first, allow me to fill you in on a little ‘backstory’ as we say.
Hench Needly is the CEO of Flange Gaming, and he’s talking about my article that quoted him as saying that the player-base for their game was mostly “nerds operating in a World where sex with other people is considered technologically advanced”.
The thread goes like this…
@HenchNeedly: Can’t believe this article by @TheBarryClimbdown. How is this journalism? @ShittFecker69: Incredible. Definitely not clickbait! @SofiaHurtsallover: Yet another sad indictment of the games industry’s attitude to women.
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly, I will not have my integrity called into question. Journalism is about the truth and about spreading that truth to as many people as possible.
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown didn’t you write that clickbait article titled “Is Peter Molyneux a Satanist?”
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly I don’t see how that’s relevant.
I know Hench from waaaaay back and we’re really close and everything but that’s not important I just wanted you to know how totally connected I am to the games industry. Anyway, I mean that’s no big deal it’s just…yeah the Hench Needly. He followed me on Twitter for a short time. No it wasn’t an accident, he even replied to one of my tweets. He said
That’s no accident.
We had a falling out because I asked him for a job and he turned me down and I may have called him out on that in an article entitled “Hench Needly Dines on the Hearts of Children”.
Anyway, someone sent me a Skype chat log where apparently Hench said all this shit that I won’t repeat here. Not until I post it in an article that’s going up next week. The article will be called “Hench Needly, CEO of Flange Gaming, Just Called a Female Co-worker a BITCH”.
No he didn’t DIRECTLY call her a bitch, but I mean if you read between the lines it’s clear that he doesn’t like her very much. Yeah this is TOTALLY relevant to gaming, what are you talking about?
Anyway, back to Twitter…
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown would you care to supply a source for that quote where I apparently insult our player-base?
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly Now who is the “fat retarded neckbeard living off scraps from the kids’ table at Christmas Dinner”
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown and would you care to supply a source for THAT quote?
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly I wouldn’t call it a quote. It’s more of a general vibe.
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown YOU CAN’T PUT SHIT IN QUOTES IF IT’S NOT A FUCKING QUOTE YOU LITTLE CUNT
@ShittFecker69: woah @HenchNeedly just called @TheBarryClimbdown a cunt on twitter @SofiaHurtsallover: Yet another sad indictment of the games industry’s attitude to women.
Anyway THAT tweet of his got deleted and he since posted a ten page grovelling apology on his blog asking people to better understand why he called me a “CUNT”. And that’s a quote.
I think getting him to blow-up publically like that was probably my finest hour. I got twelve new Twitter followers after that and there was a thread on reddit about it. It was the top thread in /r/gaming. What was it called? I forget.
(editor’s note: wasn’t it the one called “Barry Climbdown is a disgrace and should be fired”??)
Dude, Hench Needly needs to get taken down a peg or two. At Gamescrum last year I asked him for an interview and he said he was too busy. I managed to grab his arm just as he was about to take the stage to make the keynote speech and I asked him then but I mean come on, those things always start late and I had an important question about how this one time he didn’t flush the toilet and left this big turd floating there for the next guy.
See THIS is what’s wrong with the Games Industry. Nobody takes accountability, and Games Journalists like me are just called bitter liars and fantasists, and then we get denied access to the people at the top which makes my job so fucking hard.
I mean is it any wonder we have to make shit up? I mean, not ‘make it UP‘, per se, but you know, I mean “made UP”, it’s “upped”. It’s increased in goodness. It’s made UP, not made DOWN.
All we have to work with is what we can glean from covertly copy-pasted chatlogs forwarded to us by disgruntled former employees, and infer from blogs and forum posts and press releases. That’s not really enough to construct an article, y’know? I mean I don't know how some of these guys do it. I think they must be sucking the games industry's dick or something. When they write something that looks all "researched" and fucking "journalistic" and things like "integrity" and so on....tryhards, man. They're just desperately hoping someone will give them a job.
Anyway we’ll see what people make of my new article “Hench Needly – is he an Anti-Journalite? If Not Why Hasn't He Hired Me?”

I didn't get what that was about. Maybe i'm a sad indictment of the attitude of this thread ?
|
I think I'm either missing some context or some sense of british humor to fully understand this text.
|
It's a satirical take on journalism. It point out how "news" sites often use clickbait-y titles/headlines that have almost nothing to do with the actual content of articles, just to get more views. It also calls out journalists for targeting certain celebrities/industry leaders with rumor-mongering/tabloid journalism, hoping to get a rise out of them and thus attract more attention to themselves.
Humorous and accurate, whether applied to e-sports or just journalism in general. 5/5

Thanks for the explanation.
Now i get it.

ye man, I don't get it either,it looks like Barry is the only real journalist right? there is no way that people like thooorin and richard lewis actually research instead of sucking riots dick right?

Not sure what the fuck I just read but since I randomly stumbled across a link to the whole Zoe Quinn saga today this satire feels comparatively sane.

I also strongly agree with this. Seriously though, how are you going to make up shit and expect him to be fine with that? You call that journalism?
|
|
I did not understand what this was about. This is visibly some form of satire but I don't get who or what is satirized.
|
You need to punch up your titles. They're not ending in a question. Like, "HenchNeedly says I can't put shit in quotes if it's not a fucking quote - Why Not?" Or maybe go with the more vogue tag these days, "- And you won't believe what happened next!"
All in all, just another sad indictment on the game industry's inability to properly create satire outside of Esportsexpress.

sorry PyrionFlax, but HenchNeedly is right about the journalism and quoting.

If I won't believe it anyway, then there isn't much of a reason for me to read it, and I can just as well go and do something more useful, right?

It's basically: "If you did unethical stuff, I disagree with it, and now leave me alone because I don't want to be dragged down into this hellhole".
Edit: Also, 5/5 for OP, very entertaining especially after the whole Zoe Quinn drama.

Should have reserved that question for his speech though, it would be easier to get the word out :\

This satire is too close to reality to even make me laugh. You can't even differentiate between female feminists, trolling faux-feminists, male feminists, extreme feminists. Drama, regurgitated drama, drama that's been through the 4Chan blunderbuss (good term): eat enough of it, and you'll start spitting it out too. Take 2 weeks off and pass it all by with some adage about kids and a bemused smile.
|
I'd like to publically state my support for @Sophiahurtsallover, you can quote me on that you integrity-loving cunts.

Pyrion Flax's blogs are always twice as good because of the comments.

How do video games have journalism? Is there gonna be a video-game-TMZ that reveals Princess Peach's shocking affair with Kirby!?
|
God damn this was painful to read....
If you just read the first half and you're innebriated you can easily believe the the 'journalist' is actually an entitled piece of shit who thinks making up statements and throwing quotes around them is acceptable.

You're probably kidding, but just in case, ideally video games journalism follows news in the game dev industry – who's coming out with a new title in their franchise, who's going out of business, whose new game sucks, etc.
Alternately you write a headline about anything controversial Phil Fish said, then sit back and enjoy the page views as everybody argues about whether or not he's an asshole.

Disclaimers would make sense for this type of cryptic satire. Just saying. I'd make it less confusing and much funnier.

any chance this can be placed somewhere in the OP or something? because i thought that guy was actually serious until i read this post. i guess you could do that to avoid confusion among other viewers who don't read comments? just a suggestion. i loved the blog "though" OOPS I PUT "THOUGH" IN QUOTATIONS AND IT IS NOT A QUOTE.o_O

I thought the satire was pretty obvious, but that may be because I'm familiar with Pyrion. If you see a blog from him on TL/LiquidDota, you can pretty much go ahead and assume it's satire.

It's always a bit of an odd argument for someone to misunderstand a piece of art and then say "well, if it were any good I wouldn't have misunderstood it." It's not totally false, but also a bit obnoxious to blame other people for your own failure to comprehend.
