Hey Guys,
After resigning from my job a month ago I decided that I wanted to immerse myself back into the gamer community. My goal is to increase the exposure of video game content (streams, youtube, real life tournaments) across Toronto. Specifically in the cafe and bar scenes.
Now I know this isn't ground breaking and viewings happen, but I believe there is a greater demand than just the tournament views that happen every few months. In an effort to better understand the needs of the target audience, I created a survey. To get a better idea of what I have in mind, I plan to approach bar owners and establish time frames where they would turn on video games instead of sports highlights, or better yet, turn on video games over sports events if demand is high enough. Imagine watching Hearthstone, Starcraft, DOTA, CS in a bar setting after work/school instead of...golf
I would appreciate if any Toronto based Hearthstone players can give me a hand in this and share the survey (if you're not from Toronto, feel free to take anyway, just hit Toronto as main city) Once I get a bit over 100 results I will post any outstanding analysis in hopes that the community can make better choices when approaching business owners on viewing!
BTW, I hope i'm not being a douch by posting this in multiple liquid sites, but it would be nice to get a broad overview based on player base since Strategy viewers might have different preferences over MOBA viewers, etc.
TL;DR Doing research on video game viewer habits, please take this survey! In return, will reveal analysis

Just took the survey.
I'm in a similar position - wanting to get more back into the gaming scene. When I was 'off' or 'out' of the gaming scene, I mean really off...so I didn't know anything about goings on. (I'm in Toronto and I didn't even know IEM Toronto was on) Definitely more into watching RTS than anything else, watching SC2 on Twitch mainly.
Getting a gaming laptop pretty soon (as I'm in a condo sublet and I'm not really going to want to set up a desktop rig) so I will be able to get back into the actual gaming and not just watching it.
I had been thinking recently...it would be awesome if there were more Barcrafts in Toronto (before I lived in Canada I saw tons of Barcrafts going up but I think it's waned a lot).
Edit: I haven't ever attended a Barcraft/gaming being shown at bars, but I always thought it would be fun - as I am a lover of beer, and Starcraft. Maybe places that have hosted them before are more likely to do so on a regular basis. I can imagine some bars doing it in Toronto, but 'hipster' places immediately spring up mind - even then it might feel out of place.
Edit 2: I am quite surprised that games like 'League of Legends' and so forth get so many more views than SC2.
MUST CRUSH PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS.

Are you trying to imply that the likes of Hearthstone or Starcraft 2 are actually more interesting to watch than golf?

Hahah Smurg, yeah man, the scene is still happening but MOBAs are def more popular now days. I hit up yonge and eg last weekend for the LoL tournament...350 people. It's crazy! Given this was at a theater where admission fees were 18 bucks per person. I am in the same boat as you though, i'm a huge SC2 fan and had no idea IEM Toronto happened...
Lucumo, it was just a bit of a joke, i'm sure there are plenty of people who enjoy watching golf over HS, SC2, NBA etc and there is nothing wrong with that
I do appreciate everyone who has been submitting results!! We're at about 40 responses now across the Liquid sites ^_^

^_^ becoming a bit of a grind, we're sitting at 96, so I figure i'll just share the current results!
92% of respondents were male 33% 20-23, runner up is 23-27 with 28% Twitch and Youtube clear winners with Twitch ahead of Youtube Majority of users watch between 10-20 hours per week with 0-10 coming in second. I would assume this correlates fairly well with employment. Predominantly viewers watch more RTS games than any other, with MOBAs coming in second. This might be dictated by the LoL community being a lot less open to filling out surveys (aprox 3-5 of 96) Predominantly viewing is done alone with some vastly less viewers chatting or watching with friends. Game of interest is the higherst valued choice when deciding to pick what to watch, caster/genre is equally likely to be important as second place. Water, soft drinks and beer are the most popular choices in beverages in that order. Honestly, I would be highly concerned if beer was ahead of water due to the average hours of viewership per person! Pubs are of most interest to over 50% of viewers. Popcorn over peanuts, makes sense due to allergies. 1 transit system and driving with travel times under 30-40 minutes tended to be very acceptable. Some University and University grads are the main viewers with 33% and 17%, College grad, some college, graduated highschool are also very close together 13-16% each Nachos, Burgers, club, mixed platter, wings, healthy alternatives in that order. Time frames between 8pm-12am, 4pm-8pm by a large margin. Reddit and Youtube are the social media of choice in keeping up with community news.
Hope this was informative, and please keep sharing the survey! Perhaps we can refine this more
