I'm looking for some tips on how I might rig something to verify my suspicions. I was thinking about sticking a piece of paper in the slit of the door so that if it opens, the paper should drop to the ground, but I tried it a few time and it doesn't seem very reliable. Any suggestions?

When you're gone call your landlord with an urgent voice and ask if you had forgotten anything.

Then you come home and see if your room has been turned upside-down looking for the camera. Or what my brother used to do (I was a shitty older brother) was have a shirt or something tucked into the top of the door which would fall when it was opened. He got really good at hiding it, too.

There are a lot of tenancy rights here though.

If you are paranoid that your landlord might replace the tape, sign your name or something in the tape too. Best to use tape that easily rips. if you want to be more creative you can tie a string(like thread or something thin) to something inside the house and tie it to your doorknob when you leave the house. Make sure that it's not too long so that when they open the door, the string breaks. And then you can even be more creative, and add something like when the string gets pulled, something happens. You can even add traps like a cup of water falls on them or something by attaching a string to a cup of water on a bookshelf/ladder beside the door and tie it across the door so when they pass through it gets pulled and the water falls on them.

Unless she's straight up stealing or damaging something, I feel like you could just talk to her. It varies a lot place to place. Generally I think most places it has to be announced in a reasonable timeframe, usually like 24hours, but they could very easily invent a 'valid' reason like saying there was a leak they thought was in your unit and they happened upon your dead hooker storage. Having busted tape or a piece of torn hair as proof of their snooping wouldn't be proof of anything even if it were illegal. You'd most likely need video proof of their entry, and proof that it was without merit. It's a lot easier to just get a cheap safe and lock up anything valuable/thigns you don't want them to see. Do some door thing to see if anyone came in and if they did I guess figure out something with your laptop camera

From what I understand, for now he's just curious if his landlord is indeed entering his room, and for his purposes, that should be plenty sufficient. But yes, obviously if you want to go to court or something, then you need some better proof like a video or something.

This is called a game camera. It takes a picture when it senses motion. http://www.basspro.com/Wildgame-Innovations-Blade-5-IR-Game-Camera/product/1404031216/
