From what I have gathered from tutorial videos, articles and talking with members of the community, macro is a basic skill that I should be practicing quite a bit, especially if I'm going to be playing Terran. Following advice, I've been doing practice drills in custom games against the AI, focusing mainly on constantly keeping base production going to build a substantial army.
In these custom games, I only focus on constant unit production. If battles occur, I send my army there and don't pay attention to the battle, instead constantly focusing on keeping base production happening.
I have however noticed that I have two constant problems: I continually get supply blocked, and there are many times where my mineral count hits over 1K; a disaster in the making.
Trying to find tips on how to prevent this from happening, I looked up the following video:
Magnet Terran Macro Tutorial
From this I've decided to start incorporating the benchmark timings into my drills. Going thru my replays, I can see that normally by the 17 minute mark I do not have the substantial army that he has, and I'm usually only just starting to work on my third base.
I will also be incorporating the benchmark of having 19 workers on any one base. Previous the number used to be much higher at around 22 workers on each base, which is overkill.
I will also work on constantly watching my supply in the upper right corner, trying to incorporate a habit of moving my eyes from the corner, to my facilities in the bottom, to the minimap, and back, in a constant circle.
Also I have been considering playing the game at a slower speed that i can keep up with, and slowly increasing the speed as I grow more accustomed to it, but first i will be employing the above tips, then seeing if keeping up with everything is becoming a problem.
Later on during the week, maybe during my train trips to work, I am considering creating some kind of study guide to help me remember unit counters. I have just about zero idea of how to build my army and what counters what, which is obviously going to be very important to learn.
I downloaded a chart that shows the unit counters here.
Unit Counter Chart
I plan on studying this to get a better idea of how to build an army based on what my opponent is building. If you area a new player like myself, I hope this helps you.
I will compare unit production with my previous games and post the results.
