Technically a camera isn't that big of a deal, true. But, when they tell you to do something that's ostensibly for the safety of the plane, it's a bad idea to do it (especially in the age of anything strange = terrorism). If it had been a cell phone, I would have been more annoyed. Those things are actually meant to transmit, unlike say a camera. For those of you wondering why it matters, the explanation is that a defective unit (held by the passenger) could release radiation on a frequency that is critically important for the operation of the airplane's systems. Even 'shielding' of the airline's components wouldn't really protect it from that. Note the scene in the west wing where Toby is trying to argue that he should be allowed to use his cell phone because all the plane's equipment is brand new, state of the art, etc... and he's totally wrong (very rare in that show tbh).

Rofl please. Do you honestly think that if cell phones would really be dangerous they'd let you take them with you? I've been on planes with people who were speaking on their cell phones WHILE THE PLANE WAS TAKING OFF. Sure, it's an asshole-ish thing to do especially with the flight attendant asking you repeatedly to stop, but it doesn't affect the plane at all. And neither do cameras, mp3 players, radio receivers, etc. Why would terrorists bother to get knifes and such on a plane when they could simply try to smuggle in a few phones AND TURN THEM ON. PAM PAM PAM!!!

PAM PAM PAM!!! Okay now, you have to realize that the odds of the phone affecting the plane are very tiny. Sure, I will admit that. A proper functioning phone won't destroy the plane. But, there is still a tiny chance, and there are hundreds of lives at stake. The odds are probably small enough that they let you have your phones on you, but not small enough that they let all of you have your phones on at the same time. However, to say it 'doesn't affect the plane at all' is not right in a literal sense. Before I posted I ran this by an electrical engineer who works for a company building radar planes for the US government. His role is to integrate the IFF (identification friend or foe) into the E2D Hawkeye... and yes he believes passengers should turn their shit off.
