For some backstory:
On July 26 2008 05:21 TechniQ.UK wrote:
All the people who said I'm a fool and I'm retarded I challenge to write their own blogs with their views on the subject of God and the conclusions they have.
TechniQ.UK wrote a blog post about how he found God and how it changed his life. The blog is still being replied to and it's up to a thousand or so views already. He was caughting a lot of flak for what he posted, because there are a few paragraphs where depending on how you read it, it sounds a lot like preaching and he says some shit about feeling sorry for non-christians and how we haven't been found; or something like that.
Anyways, so he challenged people who called him retarded or a fool to make their on blog about their views on God. I didn't call him a retard or anything, but I got nothing else to do, so whatever.
I grew up with very religious grandparents and I went to a Catholic school and went to Church rather regularly. I don't if most people legitimately think a lot about Christ, God and the bible when they are little, but I never did. Church was just like this place I had to go, where I had to sit, stand, sing songs from a book, occasionally kneel, sit quietly as the adults received the consecrated bread & wine and then I got to go home, which was the best part.
When I was 11, I switched to a public school because my parents didn't like the way the Catholic school board ran things and then slowly we just stopped going to Church and obviously I never had any more religion classes. I never asked my parents why we stopped going, and I didn't really care because I never liked going anyways.
So I like to think I have am rather qualified to give my opinion on religion. What i mean by that is; I have gone to Church for a long time, I know the stories and at one time, I could recite the prayers. (though not anymore, I just mumble after a few verses) Whenever I think about whether there is probably a God or whether they probably isn't, the one thing I cannot get over is religions track record. For a long time before the bible, people held their book and stories as the word of God or Gods and structured their lives by that. Ancient Greece is a great example because we now read their books and stories are literature, and I often think how funny it is that people believed some of it; yet they did.
However, I know a lot of people that say they were saved by God and Jesus Christ when they accepted a religion into their life and they are better people. They have better values, morals and structure in their lives now; I just don't buy their claim that it was due to anythng other then a strong community with a good hook
I am curious why this time we got it right with religion, as opposed to before when it's known now that some people made up tales to tell to their people. I'm not really trying to accomplish anything with this blog or convert people; (if that were my goal, I did a really shit job of giving reasons to doubt religion) just to throw my own opinion out there.
Edit: Oh, and the title for this blog I got was from was a youtube video with Kevin Smith talking about his experience with religion. He basically reiterates the same thing (older religious books & stories being fictional literature that we read in school) I was always hung up on when I was little.
+ Show Spoiler +I don't want to give the impression that you should base your beliefs off of a comedian, but I always found this hilarious and somewhat true:

I agree.

Yeah, probably. Although that is probably a good thing, because that OP of that guy wasn't for people to discuss whether they is or isn't a God; he was just telling his story.

the title seems a bit too bold for your opinionated blog

It's purposely bold to catch people attention. I didn't write this to get 0 views and no responses.
Read the edit, I wrote where I got the title.

Something else to consider -
If I was up in heaven knowing that some of my friends were in Hell for not following the religion, then that for me would be Hell itself.
And if God is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful, then at best we can describe him as incompetent.

if he is all-powerful can he cease to exist? Can he die?

Kerry King is one of, if not the best guitarists in metal. It is largely true, though exaggerated quite a bit.
I mean honestly, you must be a pretty shitty person if you need an incentive (ie Heaven) in order to be a good person.

kerry king is far off 'the best metal guitarist'
im not saying anything about religion vs atheism, kerry king is simply a fucking retard and has numerous fights with others (particularly in metal) and has 0 tolerance of anything

lol religion
I look at religious people like Rekrul looks at white english teachers

It's no wonder these kind of topics achieve nothing. Everyone just asserts their opinions, whoopee. Truly a masturbatory discussion.

religion is a controlling factor that is all e.e..
People use it to explain why things happen and fill the voids of the unknown. If there was a god lol kevin pretty much says exactly how I feel about the whole subject. He is incompetent. I am a firm believer in proof of something being the way it is. I just dont think god feels that area for me because I cant bring myself to believe something thats not there. Any who, just felt I would rant a little.

Let's say God is the king of a vast country. This king obviously has laws. He loves his people. And let's say that a vast majority of the people love him too. But there are a few people who keep questioning his authority and try to revolt. While this king does want everyone to be happy, he cannot tolerate the people who revolt and hurt the "good" citizens of his country.
Thus, what does this king do? He is portrayed as a loving king. And yet, the revolting citizens blame the king for trying to put them in prison. And if there was a heaven that the king could send his people to, he would obviously send the good ones, and leave the bad ones behind.
Any questions?
You should rather focus on the fact that there is no physical proof that God actually exists. Or that the fact that there's no solid proof that much of the Bible is actually inspired by God. Don't use this stupid and elementary argument about God being a "loving" God and how he can stand sending people to hell.

Yeah, I wouldn't use that point for the sole reason that it's easily debunked.

There's this father and he loves his kids but they aren't following his rules, so he sends his kids to hell. THAT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE.
For some super being that's supposed to be omniscient and omnipotent he sure is quite spiteful. It break down when you talk about murderous people sure, but what if a person never goes to church or doesn't believe in God. Will he still be sent to eternal damnation? What if he does everything morally "correct" but refuses to live his life by a book. What then? TO HELL WITH HIM OF COURSE.
|
See, that's a real big problem for Christianity. You get some logical problems when you try to place the attributes "omnipotent", "omniscient", and "benevolent" onto the same entity and reconcile that with the current and past world situations. It would be much easier for Christians if they just picked two.
Physical proof is irrelevant for Christians. Forget the ones that claim physical evidence in favor of their faith; their crackpottery is self-evident. The ones that like to think of themselves as logical use only faith to justify their belief in God; it cannot be undermined by physical evidence. Philosophical arguments will still apply, such as the one I presented.
|
Let's put it this way. I don't care about the existence of God, gods, or whatever the fuck. I'm going to live my life by what I think is right and I would expect a being like God to understand that I'm not going to blindly follow what people say, and if this God can't understand that then he's an idiot and I will kamehameha his face.
I mean, if a man were to live like a saint but not have faith in God by the rigid rules of Christianity he will go to hell correct? Doesn't make sense to me, so I choose to believe God isn't as rigid as Christianity or he doesn't exist and either way I'm covered.
|
How about when I spoke about the bible being literature? Other civilizations used to hold their own documents or stories to be the word of God, but now we view those as tales and interesting literature.
|
i find stuff like ancient greek myths and stories of gods to be highly interesting, even though they are just stories with no evidence

I think more of the disagreements about religion stem from religious people misinterpreting their own religion than anything else (including most of the violent crimes committed by religious zealots [pun may or may not have been intended huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu]).
Two men having sex is an abomination. This is why many religious people try to get it legally banned. However, eating shell fish is equally an abomination if my understanding of the bible is correct, and yet I don't see religious activists lobbying for the closing of seafood restaurants :-/

JohnColtrane, I'm sure a couple of second on Google will find you the relevant verses. The Jewish, who follow the Torah (the Old Testament) more literally than Christians, eat "kosher" for a reason.

Yeah, because the spelling is more important than the topic at hand.
If you're gonna get nitpicky about that, stop using triple punctuation marks where they're not grammatically correct. And stop using nonstandard English. Or just ignore errors in the English if you can figure out what he's saying anyways.

That's because the ridiculous laws of leviticus were overturned by Jesus. Which inherently makes no sense, but whatever.

I've stopped debating about religion because its just impossible to prove a point about faith to someone religious.
Watch that documentary of Richard Dawkins named The enemies of reason. He sets up an experiment where dowsers have to "feel" which one of 15 closed boxes contain water. I forgot the exact number, but not a single dowser got it right more than half the time. Even though the results clearly proved that dowsing does not work, the dowsers still believed in their paranormal gift and they made up excuses for why it didn't work this one time.
if you can't even convince a dowser that he can't "feel" where water is with clear evidence, then how can you convince a Christian that there is no invisible god?

To prove a point. What are you retarted? You and all you other nai-sayers when it comes to religion why don't you just shut the fuck up. It's not the fact that some people have different oppinions that's pissing me off it's about constantly forcing your own opinion on someone else. Which is btw a nice little history twist if you think about it.
It's simply not important, people. What matters is what you personaly believe in and if it makes you happy and keeps you on track. That's the friggin fucking point!! It doesn't matter if she ate an apple or a banana or if there really is a place that anal probes you for eternety.
So you have your own theories and this whole christ thing doesnt sound right to you anyway. O the fuck K. Grow up and learn to respect other peoples way of life and view on life. All these debunking missions miss the point of religion by miles. And i'm stunned that in this time and age people still dont get that. Its a personal way of life to pursue happyness and peace. Either it works for you or not. You are free to believe in whatever you want.
I know that most of you are kids or in their early twentys. You need to chill out, grab your backpack and travel around the world. And then learn trough the lesson of dealing with different cultures how there are many ways of life and how you can pick out the things that work for you and make you happy.
btw. im not a christian

+1 religious thread at teamliquid...
|
Jayson X, your post is a disgrace. Seriously.
Religion to some may be a personal road to happiness. That's true enough. That doesn't justify everything that's done in the name of religion.
When I get bit by a person who's doing it "for God," I'm going to question his belief, and I might try to dissuade others from similar beliefs in the hope that it will reduce the chance that I'll get bitten by another religious maniac. Now, ridiculing my efforts by saying that religion is a personal thing, and thereby implying that it's not my business, neglects to consider my motivation for butting into other people's personal decisions - because their "personal" decisions end up affecting me.
I have absolutely no problem with people obeying their God, as long as it doesn't hurt me. As such, I have a problem with pretty much everyone who makes it known to me that he is religious. Unfair? I don't think so.
You really did do a good job of taking your own advice, though. Pick and choose the pieces you like. Conveniently ignore the rest. I'd invite you to open your eyes, but something tells me that doing so might cause some sort of psychological harm.

Sorry about my last night. When I get tired I get mean? It sucks hahaha but I am sorry. I dont know if I could delete it? But If the op of the blog would be as kind to delete the last post of mine I would appreciate it.
I'm not trying to debunk anything. Just wanted a half decent quality debate with my fellow teamliquiders.
I just find pursuing happiness in a fictitious book is mind boggling.

Pursuing happiness in repetitive arm movements is strange too. And just as OK.
But it stops being OK when that arm... er... I'll leave that unfinished.

Omnipotent and omniscient do not have any moral connotations. Benvolence is typically understood to mean "is nice to me" as opposed to "is mean to me," both of which are highly subjective and perhaps influenced by one's perception of "good." However, an omnipotent and omniscient entity would be able, if willing, to appear benevolent to any and all other entities.

Thing is it can help a lot of people. Though not me, I can't believe in something it has no solid reasoning(talking about chistianity now)... hell I can't even obey rules that I find purpuseless. Maybe I could be a budhist or a sun worshipper... I don't know.
On the other hand it's good to have faith that keep you going in the hard times. And also If you are being controlled/brainwashed by one thing the chances are you are immune to all other(possible harmer) forms of the same thing.

lol, i was thinking this thread had 3 pages of flames and disagreements on religion...

a god existence can not be proved ~,nor its non-existence in my honest opinion, a god wouldnt care if you believe in his existence, but he would care if you believe in goodness and friendship, and whatever.. love"? a good example is that if you just get born in an island in the middle of the pacific -with no tv, pc, or ppl to tell you what to do -you just would never know anything about bible , christ, or god, and after some years you will be treating the rain as a goddess and the sun as a god , as done by aztecs , maias and whatever~ that proves that many of our beliefs were created to dominate us, as made by the catholic religion in middle-age(dark-age)with the crusades-and by killing many scientists,"witches"- but the very core of any belief is that you should make the things the right way to reach a heaven/paradise with 17 virgins/eternal life... the common place that we all want to reach is, -peace,faith,justice,valor,honor,courage,love,friendship,dexterity,stamina,intelligence,macro,micro, ok... yeah, you got it.

So, do we still worship the Starcraft gods or.... Also, just for kicks, read the Harry Potter book and every time it says "Harry" you read "Jesus" and every time it says "Voldemort" you read "Satan". Kind of off-topic but also substitute "wand" for "penis".

my main problem with the concept of christianity is all the good people that went to hell simply because they existed before christianity came into existence
that said, i realize religion is a helpful tool for some, go ahead and use it. just don't bother me about it, i won't bother you and we can live together in harmony (atheists/agnostics seem to hold up their end of the bargain.. maybe it's your turn?)
