1. My voice gets dry and low
2. I can't breathe right, like I choke on my words
Do any of you all know how to get rid of this? I've had this problem forever now. I wanna be more confident and just talk to an audience.

edit: Also, just know your shit when you go up to do whatever you're doing, it makes it a lot easier. Just think of how awesome you'll feel when you're done. I wish back when I was in school I would have been made to do such things on a weekly basis or something... It took me some time out of high school to get to the point where such things didn't freak me out anymore. It doesn't really affect me anymore now that I've done it a million times.

if you go into it dreading it of course it isn't going to go well instead, embrace it and look at it as a free 50 points or however much an oral presentation is worth. just be adequately prepared for your presentation. sometimes it might even help doing the presentation in front of a sibling. during this practice run, don't have them measure you on content, have them tally how many "um" and "like" etc you say. my 9th grade english teacher had a snapple bottle cap with that freshness seal thing and would "pop" it everytime she heard one of those things. my first presentation i had around 30 or 40 "um/like/etc" in a 7 minute oral presentation lol. eliminating those already makes your presentation sound much more professional and prepared. also on that note, remember that its better to have a second filled with silence than a second filled with "umm". while the silence might feel like an eternity for you, it really isn't that long. and actually you sound more confidence compared to the obvious "don't-know-what-to-say ummm".

So I went from dreading the thought of speaking to an audience to really enjoying it and wishing I could do it more. For now, you should probably practice giving the presentation at home before doing it in class.

Also, in classes, your audience is usually quite sympathetic, and aren't looking for your faults. At worst, they'll just wait until you sit down. The worst presentations I've sat through in classes, I was thinking "oh man, this guy's gonna get a bad grade" not "nice try, asshole, I'm gonna find your house and burn it down!" You don't have to give a perfect presentation; the purpose is to say your shit and sit down.

Join speaking classes/debate clubs/what have you and also practice on your family and such (if it's an option.) I also agree very much with that knowing your subject very well helps.

The hard part is to become so ignorant that you actually believe in the above.

- join a debate or theater class/group or even better sign up for improv; do improv for a few months and u will eventually learn to handle it; works like a charm - basically u have to expose urself to public speaking over and over - alternatively, get ur doctor to prescribe u propranolol 20 mg (a beta blocker - it blocks part of the effect of adrenaline) and take it 1.5 hours prior to public speaking to prevent most of the symptoms of stage fright - it usually helps reduce the time it will take u to get over the problem too; don't use propranolol unless you doc approves it and he has checked u out, its a pretty safe med at that dose if nothing else is going on with u but it in some conditions it may not be (asthma, diabetes, some heart arrhythmias, list is longer) - don't use alcohol or anxiolytics because though u migh obtain temporary relief they will never help u overcome this problem and sometimes actually make it wose over time; it is something u have to face over and over until u lose the fear associated with it.. - google "stage fright techniques" and "stage fright" and you will find some useless advice and some very good advice in some of the links..
