Apparently, Australia's wildlife services have added a new way to prevent extinction. "Professional snipers have been brought in to guard a vulnerable colony of penguins in Australia." More info:+ Show Spoiler + The deployment follows the mysterious deaths of nine of the flightless birds over the last two weeks.
The mutilated bodies of the animals, known as fairy penguins, were found in a national park near Sydney harbour.
The main suspects are dogs and foxes. At 40cm tall, the world's smallest penguin species is clearly no match for such aggressive enemies.
To even up the fight, two snipers have been deployed as bodyguards.
They have started night patrols and have instructions to do what it takes to protect these tiny creatures.
They have joined a legion of volunteers, who have also been guarding the birds during the hours of darkness when they are most vulnerable to attack.
Traps have been also been set in a concerted attempt to catch Sydney's penguin killers.

The thread title had me believing snipers were hired to kill off poachers. I was slightly dissapointed. But this is still pretty awesome.
penguin<dog<sniper the normal follow up to create a balanced wildlife environment would be penguins>snipers

Seriously, these two dudes have the best job on the planet right now Imagine putting that on your CV

lolol I wonder how Peta feels about this? I'm gonna send this to my vegan friend and see what she says.
This is exaqctly the kind of creativity we need to apply to the economy to com eout of the recession. 1. Hire snipers(YAY NEW JOBS!!) 2. Shoot people(those that have jobs are preferred because that CREATES NEW JOBS!!) 3. ??? (self explanatory) 4. Profit.

"I'm a cunt blah blah blah" :O Just my educated guess. She'll probably say they should be using tranq's instead of bullets to protect the penguins. I might agree, unless they plan on eating what's preying on the penguins.
Won't this just begin a penguin hunter/penguin arms race? Before we know it the foxes will hire counter-snipers and then tanks will be involved and before we know it ICBM's are going to be flying.
They should surround the penguin nesting grounds with landmines spider mines obv.

so the penguins can't get out and starve to death. hopefully they will evolve and learn to fly within the next few weeks.

Are you stupid? It takes a MUCH MUCH longer time to evolve. Few weeks? More like hundreds of millions of years. + Show Spoiler + You gotta train your pokemans.
Dude above was joking. Um I'm not the brightest person in the world but killing off native species that naturally prey on another is a bit counter-productive, no?

No, I did read the spoiler but I still felt like the pokemon reference was irrelevant to his refutation of what redtooth said. If he was joking also, then good!
This is why i love my country.
Am I the only one that thought this would have been a thread about Hwasin? "red sniper"?

That is actually not a bad idea. It won't be long until some country implement that system on their wildlife protection.
I saw this on the BBC RSS at work today, it was worth a smile. This is not going to be used as an anti-poacher measure since poachers directly factor into human economies. Furthermore, the vast majority of humans place greater value on one human life than on one non-human life.
