Contagion (2011) - A Review

tl;dr It's a great movie, probably the best you'll see for a few weeks. Beautifully shot, fine acting, suspensful.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I'm gonna do movie reviews now and again, not so much because I feel they should be criticized, moreso because I feel people should pay attention to the films mentioned. Oh yeah, I'll try not to divulge any spoilers but there are no real big surprises anyway.

That being said, I just got home from watching Contagion, and I'm still recovering from thetensiondelivered in every single frame. Unlike Apollo 18 (which for me was saved only by the incredible sets), this movie is genuinely suspenseful; case in point: towards the end, Matt Damon is flipping through digital photos on his dead-cheating-wife's camera, and the deliberate clicking sound is enough to make you tense, as if you expect him to stumble onto a photo of her naked with a donkey. It's that good.

Mentioning Matt Damon reminds me to include the incredible ensemble of Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Marion Cotillard (including some other recognizable faces) that surrounds him. They each get a seperate thread of the same plot, and the idea isn't to showcase different points of view for point of view's sake, but rather the relevant points of view. I.E. you're not going to see the story from Shady Grady's perspective, rather the doctor's and the grieving husband's and the head of the CDC. This is what Cloverfield messed up--because who honestly gave a shit about those stupid fratboys and their idiot girlfriends? Each character basically gets the same amount of screen time, which is slim at best, but they all make the most of it. Matt Damon--to his credit--avoids coming across as withdrawn and coldhearted even though he gets just one scene to openly grieve for his wife and son (strangely enough he doesn't seem to think about the son at all). Maybe he's no Sean Penn in Mystic River, but you can tell he's depressed anyway, which is impressive in itself.

As for the other actors, they're great. Nuff said? Matt Damon's daughter is a bit ungrateful after being protected from looting and potential home invasions, and I'm still not convinced his wife deserves to be grieved over, as she came across as a partying little pixie, but everyone is up to snuff, even Laurence Fishburne. Jude Law is dynamite, per usual, as the bigheaded and morally superior blogger. His performance is key to driving home the theme of social networking as a valuable and--more importantly--a credible source of information in the modern world.

Contagion is subtle. There are no explosions, no gratuitous scenes of violence, just dialogue and a borderline arty cinematography to move the plot along. Occasionally the camerawork is too arty, such as when one scene hangs on a door closing for about ten seconds. Hint: no one wants to see a door closing for ten seconds. Uh, let's see, what else...oh! did I mention the science isn't paperthin like in Apollo 18? Maybe it's mostly made up, but at least it sounds believable, unlike space crabs.

But yeah, go see it. *poke*

Also it can actually kill units now! But can please we ignore how it does like 200 less damage?

Anyway I actually really want to Contagion, even more following this review.

I thought it was decent, but not as good as I was hoping (I love apocalypse/disaster scenario/sci-fi movies). The story-telling style was compelling with the multiple viewpoints, but as a whole the movie lacked overarching structure and direction, with the end result being a rather unconvincing ending IMO.

I'd still recommend it if you like these kinds of movies, but perhaps I went in with inflated expectations and was a bit disappointed.

if it kills within days doesn't that kinda stop the spread in itself? I thought the best plagues started out weak with like sneezing and minor shit and took weeks to finally kill so as to spread faster and more infiltrator style.

yeah i was actually hesitant to see the movie because of the mixed reviews that i've seen, but I usually never go with reviews and wanted to see it for myself. Another reason was because Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad was going to be in the movie and I love Breaking Bad. His role in the movie was really unnecessary, they could've given that role to any random person. I'd probably give it a 0/5

Just watched the movie and it was brilliant. Probably one of the most underrated movie of 2011.

Fact that it also got praised from scientific world makes how much realistic this movie is.

yeah this movie looked amazing from the trailers but it really wasn't that great. I've seen too many movies that are similar in nature that have way more suspense.
