I’m taking a little break from Mr. Greg Fields and his travels to write something less affected. God knows why, I have a few essays due and apparently they won’t write themselves.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJSjspGcmMU

I’ve been watching a few movies lately, among them:

Magnolia

Long but well worth it. I found Julianne Moore excruciating to watch (the point I think), though I really liked every other character, and the narrative style. I find it very hard to take John C. Reilly (the cop) seriously after seeing him in Tim and Eric. The movie felt a little “gimmicky” at times, a little too “Get it? Get it?!”.

Alphaville

Old French sci-fi flick, no special effects, interesting viewing.

Boogie Nights

I enjoyed this less than Magnolia, both are directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

L.A Confidential

The book by James Ellroy is on the syllabus for one of my units. His writing style is unique. He was once told by one of his editors to cut down one of his earlier works from 700 pages or so to 300. Since he didn’t want to remove any of the plot, Ellroy simply excised a lot of the verbs. It reads like:

Character’s name, noun: list of nouns, abstract noun.

Nicola, table: .45 automatic, switchblade, pump action, devastation.

I’m exaggerating, still. It’s disorientating at first but I think it works, though I probably wouldn’t have finished the book if I didn’t have to. The movie was less agreeable. I’m not really into the crime genre.

A Woman Under the Influence

Probably the best film in this bunch. It shows – and I think “shows” is the best word here, very fly on the wall – the mental breakdown of a wife and mother of three. Her husband has her committed, and after six months she comes back to the family home. Gena Rowlands is superb, superb, superb. One scene in particular was very poignant; if anyone here has seen the movie, I mean the sequence when Nick returns to work at the mine. The men are walking behind the Caterpillar earth-mover, the camera is following them slowly from quite a distance, and these very ominous piano chords fade in. Then Eddie takes a tumble.

Annie Hall

First Woody Allen I’ve seen in its entirety. At first it was a little cringe worthy, the jokes felt stale and contrived. I did warm to it though (the red wine helped).

Well, films aside. Here’s a little anecdote. Two nights ago I went downstairs to make a cup of tea (black, no milk) . I was doing some research online at the time. I head back upstairs, sit down, put my cup of tea on the desk. Of course, not looking, I put it on the edge of a book. It falls and tea spills down a little channel I had so fortuitously created between books and my speakers, off the desk and right onto my internet modem on the floor (a silly place for it). I’m rushing downstairs to get some paper towel when I trip on the bottom step and bang my knee on the wall. A broken modem, a heavily bruised knee, very annoyed housemates, a trip into Telstra (my ISP), thirty minutes on the phone with them afterward (the new modem wouldn’t work): all in all a good excuse to delay work. That or a blog.

Addendum: potentially NSFW.

I think my entire generation is fucked in the head (don't know your age, I'm 21 and feels this at least).

That modem looks like mine... Thomson?
Ever since I got that thing I had troubles playing BW online. (Yes, even with properly forwarding ports!)
I can only play 1v1 or I need to host.

Aaaaand...this blog wins the title (pun intended) of the most misleading title I've read today
Glad you liked Magnolia, though.

I'd say half best.

Ok, I guess I'm going to have to provide a blog about sex and periods, maybe a series of them, a periodical if you will.
