Obama writes in his most recent book, The Audacity of Hope: "Affirmative action programs, when properly structured, can open up opportunities otherwise closed to qualified minorities without diminishing opportunities for white students."[69]

qualified minorities = African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans

do not diminish opportunities = Caucasians.

So where's the extra spaces going to come from?

Well, it's not ironic, but you're right and I don't agree with his statement. I don't think AA should operate on race. Maybe economic status.

I've always felt this. I'm still bitter about a black friend getting into Rutgers with very mediocre grades and decent economic standing, while I got waiting listed. Bastards.

I agree that special candidacy for programs should be based not on the color of your skin, but on the

a) content of your character (most of the other qualifications)
b) evidence that you actually are in need of special candidacy (similar to what was suggested above)
