Because young children typically pay more attention to obvious features, their early understandings of concepts are apt to be based on such features. For example, in a study by DeVries (1969), children ranging in age from 3 to 6 played for a short time with a good-natured cat named Maynard. Then, as they watched, the experimenter placed a ferocious-looking dog mask on Maynard and asked them, "What is this animal now?" Many of the 3-year-olds asserted that Maynard was now a dog and refused to pet him. In contrast, the 6-year-olds could overlook dog mask, recognizing that it did not change Maynard's catness. As children grow older, they begin to attend less to perceptually salient features and focus more on abstract qualities (Anglin, 1977; Keil, 1989, Rakison, 2003).
+ Show Spoiler +My first graduate school reading and already my mind is drawn back to starcraft even as I try not to play it for this week.

No: part time grad student while teaching. I'm taking a one week course this week that's worth three credits (while I'm off for summer break).

| Huh. I always thought it was popularized in the US by an American player named Maynard, and that this is common knowledge. Is it not so? Also originally called the "Maynard Exchange," but apparently now renamed the "Maynard Transfer." |
