Last night I fractured my left 5th metatarsal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metatarsus). I was at the gym practicing kickboxing, so you should probably have an idea of how it happened. Anyway, I live on campus at UC San Diego and have a few different gym choices. I decided to go to a farther gym then since my girlfriend want to stretch for dance with some of her friends. I'm really completely unflexible, which doesn't help for martial arts at all, so getting a good stretch was pretty attractive. We arrive, do a bunch of stretches, then all the dancers get into doing a few workouts. Since becoming flexible is a way higher priority for me than conditioning, I keep stretching. The room we used is multipurpose, and used by a few of the martial arts clubs, so there were a few upright punching bags supported by big fat bases. The gym I normally go to has regular suspended bags. I'm just waiting for the dancers to finish at this point, so I launch a few casual kicks and am pleased to discover the stretches helped a lot for kicking. Everything seems fine, until I make the mistake of launching a tornado kick on the bag. It actually went so high as to go over the top of the bag, which wasn't really a problem, but my left foot, instead of landing on solid ground like it normally would, landed partially on the bag's fat base. It slipped off after bending a great deal, but I managed to land standing. The first thing I noticed was a great (though tolerable) deal of pain in the outer side of my left foot.
At this point I didn't know that I had broken anything. I figured that the fact I was able to walk, even if walking caused excruciating pain in my foot, was a pretty good sign that it was just a bruise or something that would be fine overnight. I still was stuck at the gym though, but luckily my girlfriend's dorm was very close. It would have been hell to get to my dorm, which was about a mile away despite still being on campus. UCSD is ridiculously huge. I crashed at my gf's for the night, hoping that my foot would feel better in the morning. My foot did feel a lot better when I woke up, and I could hobble around well enough to take a campus shuttle to class.
I went to the student health center after class to make sure nothing serious was wrong. The guy who took my xrays was like "Hey come take a look at these. You sure did a doozy on that." From the picture, it would be pretty obvious to anyone that my bone was broken. The doctor said that he was surprised that I wasn't in a wheelchair and that I wasn't taking anything for pain.
The treatment isn't so bad. I just have to wear a hardsoled shoe for up to 6 weeks while it heals. I'm just a bit sad that I won't be functioning to my best abilities for the first few weeks of the school year. I was also going to take a kempo class, which I out the door until next quarter, I guess. The worst part of all this is the sheer size of UCSD. I walk so slowly that it takes forever to get anywhere. Getting between classes which have only a 10 min window of time between them and take a 10 min walk at normal pace is going to be a challenge. :/

| All I see is an excuse to be late for every class by about 5 minutes. Besides the prof scratching his nuts, what do you feel like you're missing? |
| | Even though you go to the other world, please don't blame me... (don't) |

Getting to class late is (or can be) a big pain in the ass (or foot?). |
