Looking for a recent game similar to Diablo 2

So my Dad's birthday is in a couple of days, and since he bought a new computer about a week ago, and has been making comments about not having played any games in a long time, we thought a good present might be a new pc game.

Games he has loved in the past include:
  • Crystal Caves
  • Dune (the first one, adventure/'rts' hybrid)
  • Diablo 2
  • Mario 64 + Sunshine
  • Zork Series
  • Myst + Riven

Out of those games the one he loved the most by far was Diablo 2. So what I've been trying to come up with over the past week is a game that is pretty similar to Diablo 2 but more recent.

The game I've come up with is Sacred 2, and looking through the forums and a bit of googling it seems a lot of other people make the observation that the Sacred series is kind of a Diablo clone.

I've played and enjoyed the first Sacred, so I can definitely see that it's similar.

But before I go ahead and buy it today for him, I figured I'd ask around here first, does anyone know of any recent (within the last 2 years~) games that are similar to Diablo 2 (that are also decent)? And if anyone has any thoughts about the suitability of Sacred 2, that would also be appreciated!

Thanks

It sounds like he enjoys the adventure-style game. How about something like Fable 2? It's definitely not a Diablo clone, but it's a good game in its own right and may be right up his street.

Titan Quest is a semi-playable Diablo clone. Plus there was another thread here of a nice looking game similar to Diablo, can't remember the name though.

edit: Ahhh found it:

Sacred was awesome, Sacred 2 was basically the same, though I'd have to say the first one was better. Titan Quest, and it's expansion Immortal Throne, are pretty close to Diablo 2. i think they came out in 06/07, or sometime around there. that's all i can remember atm for semi-recent games similar to d2.

oh and if you haven't looked into it, there's a bunch of mods for d2 that are worth playing, most of them add a new element and freshness to the game.

Fallout 3, the vats targetting system makes it take not a lot of mechinical skill (like diablo 2) and has a huge open world/story. Got lots of atmosphere and it's a play at your own pace kinda game, which is good for parents that don't have a lot of free time. Not gonna get raped online cause there is no online. Pretty crazy game overall, eerie too.

Unfortunately we don't have a 360 so Fable 2 is out of the question But thanks for the suggestion.

Wow, torchlight looks perfect! It comes out on the 16th, that's only 3 days after his birthday, pretty acceptable for an IOU I think, now to check that it actually comes out on Australia at the same time..Hmm actually it's 16 days till release.. that's maybe pushing it. Will have to decide haha

My brother and I thought about mods. We never really reached a decision, but with torchlight as a potential choice now I think we'd go that over a mod. I'd probably go Sacred 2 over a mod as well.

I enjoyed Sacred quite a lot, never got around to getting Sacred 2 so yeah, thanks for the quick review

Damn torchlight looks like a lot of fun.

Write him out an IOU or a check for diablo 3, post in on the wall until the day comes. spend the night with him outside the store, enjoy the conversation and time spent with your father.

I would recommend Oblivion or Sacred 2, they are both good games with a lot of content to keep you busy for a long time.

Sacred 2 has an expansion called Ice & Blood, but the developers went bankrupt so only the European version of the game received the expansion which is something to keep in mind.

another vote for Sacred/Sacred 2
imo it's by far the best game similar to D2

I've heard good things about Sacred 2 and one of my old D2 buddies said he liked it a lot and it played like D2, so that's good enough for me to recommend it .

Also if he hasn't played Morrowind/Oblivion those are both very good choices. Morrowind is a bit dated but still a great game and Oblivion just improved on that in a lot of ways.

Your father might enjoy The Witcher, Dungeon Siege 2 or one of the Gothic games.

Sacred 2 plays extremely extremely similar to D2 and is much more fun than Sacred 1 imo. Titan Quest is also very similar to D2. I don't know about their multiplayer replayability value because I didn't play either of them online.

Sacred 2 has about a trillion quests in it but a LOT of them are of the "make the game longer" variety and involve like "bring this guy X number of Y units," where you just walk around a lot. However given that there are a billion quests that still means there's plenty of fun things.

In terms of single player vastness I would go for Sacred 2, as its campaign is enormous. Both Titan Quest and Sacred 2 "continue" by giving you harder difficulty modes just like Normal, Nightmare, and Hell in D2.

Oblivion is a good game too but it's much more "immersive" and "in-depth" than D2; D2 is more of a kind of superficial quest structure where you go around killing monsters all game and I think Sacred 2/Titan Quest fit that a lot better than Oblivion, which involves extreme customization of characters and a LOT more "real RPG" elements. D2, Sacred 2, and Titan Quest basically just involve choosing skills, choosing weapons, and killing things while following an interesting but not particularly detailed storyline.

However if you know he enjoys that kind of in depth stuff then Oblivion is a very good choice and contains about a trillion hours of gameplay. There are also tons and tons of mods for Oblivion as well as 2(? I think) expansions (Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles or something like that). I'm sure you know this but one thing to note is that Oblivion is first person. I liked the game but I would have enjoyed it much more if I had the option to go 3rd person instead. I don't like FP for medieval/fantasy kind of things. There is 3rd person in Oblivion but it's just aesthetic and you'll be handicapped immensely if you play using it.

Titan Quest is the closest substitute to Diablo 2 that I can think of. It's pretty good.

Imho getting someone who truely loved diablo 2 some diablo clone that just isn't as good and doesn't have the same feeling is not the best idea.
Get him an RPG that will be something different, something new, my recommendation would be Fallout 3 or Mass Effect.

There is one game that comes to my mind. Kinda strategic one. You have three different races, one are humans equipped with marvellous weapons, one are very inteligent and mysterious aliens and one are another aliens, quite dumb, but superior in numbers, bloodthristy, and controlled by terryfying mastermind. It all takes place in future, very far from Earth, you have campaigns for each race and the plot is full of twists. Furthermore, you can play it online or by LAN which makes 1000x more fun, because all three races are so balanced. The only drawback might be that graphics are slightly outdated and it takes a lot of effort to get good in this, but it should not be too big concern if your Dad wants to play just for fun.

Unfortunately, I forgot this game's name...

Just so you know, Titan quest and its expansion are $5 on direct2drive and Sacred gold is $10 on steam.
I heard that Sacred 2 was too buggy and some people found it frustrating because there was too many enemines.
Fate is a good one if he can stand the slightly childish graphics.
