Today, at work, we closed 4 hours early(6pm). I don't really know why since Thanksgiving is tomorrow, not today, so I asked a co-worker. He said that everyone eats Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving eve, and not Thanksgiving.
I don't see why this is. Why would you celebrate a holiday the day before the holiday?? My family has always eaten Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving so I found it really weird when he told me that.
What do you guys think of this? Do you eat turkey dinner on Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving eve?

Also, a second question. I guess you could say when my family eats dinner(any day) we don't do it the traditional way at the table with everyone together. We just go out to the kitchen, thank my mom, then chill in the livingroom or our bedrooms or wherever, instead of sitting at the table together. Mind you we don't even really have a kitchen table though. Does anyone else do this or do you all eat together at the dining table?

In America I'm pretty sure everyone typically eats Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving itself. That said, it's on a Thursday and people often have the following Friday (Black Friday) off, so perhaps in Canada lots of people prefer to eat the night before the holiday and enjoy a relaxing evening knowing they don't have to go to work the next day (also assuming that is in fact the case).
They do say it's important for a family to eat together if possible and share some quality time. It's usually the only time everyone is together during the day. Obviously though a family is what you make of it and each one has its own unique flavor. |

| I'd rather eat and get drunk on Sunday and have Monday for the hangover. This way the holiday won't affect me at work when I return on Tuesday. |

| I can see how people might eat it earlier because Thanksgiving is on a Monday this year, but he said that every year people eat on Thanksgiving eve, regardless of the day. |

Nope, we'll get a day off for Thanksgiving. And we'll enjoy it not playing StarCraft but being American.
Sorry, Canadians. |

Your poll is going to be massively skewed by Americans voting.
The reason why many people eat on sunday night is so they can use monday for resting or travelling back home. |

Just because 90% of your friends don't do it, doesn't mean everyone else has to behave that way.
I think if anything your friends have a highly introvert way of being if they can't even just sit and eat with their family. In my house that's like some of the only time we're ever able to all get together on a regular basis.
Oh and by the way starting out any response with 'wrong' is a pretty insolent act in itself.Last edit: 2009-10-12 15:45:04 |
