There is this guy in his mid 30s, totally random, unknown, but that has managed his way up to the pastor rankings. How?
I've been attending this church for about five years already, and it's been a good place to go, or it was until about a couple months ago, when this ugly creep arrived and since then has been telling the church exactly what they want to hear.
"This is a good church, the best church, god is going to give you favor and this and that and such and fill in the blank here bitches _________".
Well the pastors, for some reason, love it. They simply love it. This guy HAS to come up to the pulpit at least twice during a sermon to preach some random prophecy that favors the church somehow and people clap and clap.
Guess what the pastors did not long ago homies: They requested an EXTRA offering "to help our new prophet" on top of the one they normally request. He made a shitload of money you know, because we usually have two sermons per sunday. In other words, he got two offerings all for himself.
I really don't know whether to say that this dude is legit or not or just a scam trying to make money out of a stupid church that can't think for themselves; abusing their stupidity for his own good. Like literally, people in there agree with everything the pastors say; in the five years that I've attended, I've yet to see someone stand up and question a pastor or anyone.
EVER
Since that moment on the pastors have been requesting two offerings per sermon (totaling 4 offerings a Sunday) after they found out they could leech more money out of their congregation "for good purposes".
They even changed the church's carpet to make them think their money is being put to good use and the people are all happy with their shiny little faces :D
There are some really smart people in this world, trying to find the slightest chance they can get to abuse a weakness in a system for their own good.

You're totally right about those things, but the shame is that there are parts of religion that are very good, and people miss out on it coz of the shit the organization does.

Is not what religion IS.
Those are things that are done by people who are demented, but happen to be somehow tied to the organization.

This does not shine a positive light on your regular pastors. They are either "in on it" for some extra cash, or just too placid and incompetent to react properly and put an end to his crap.
I am not the least bit religious, but I do admire crafty speakers in any profession. Joel Osteen is an amazing public speaker and speech writer - highly recommended. |

Sounds like smart businessing to me. I mean, if you want to sell food, you go to the hungry. If you work in security, you go to the worried. If you want to exploit other people's stupidity, you go to the gullible.
His scheme only works on gullible people, and who's more suited for something like this than a collection of people who've already proven their gullibleness in their religious belief?

Leaving aside the inevitable church-bashers which seem to crop up much more on the internet than in person because on the internet you aren't actually talking to someone face to face, so you don't really need to think as much about what you're saying....
Really, if your church is turning into a money-making-machine (sadly this is starting to happen again), then complain. Lodge a complaint with the elders (prominent people with a say in the church community), you must have elders, right? Say something along the lines of "this guy's message is that we're good and we're fine, but we shouldn't come to church to hear that. Church is not for stroking your ego, church is for learning about, working for and worshiping God, and things that detract from that should not be pursued."
But really, 4 offerings?? That is excessive man, I've only ever seen two offerings in a service(one normal and one for a special "mission" project to Nepal or Zimbabwe...). I dont know how your church works, and I dont really know how requesting offerings works in America (never lived there), but having an offering just to "help out" this guy is just not cool. You should also demand that if he's so important to them (and their egos?) that he be hired (if he isin't) so that the money transaction there isin't so sketchy (because the way you describe it, it appears quite shady).
So yeah, raise doubts about his teachings/theology and about the sketchy "payments". I don't mean stand up in the middle of the service and yell it, but talk to the right people y'know. Oh and by the way, what denomination is your church? Hope it helpsLast edit: 2009-11-04 02:24:56 |

| So you feel that there is something suspicious, but it doesn't sound as if you approached some officials and asked what the money is used for? If they aren't just collecting the money for their own good, they will be able to show you what the money was used for in detail. |

| The whole idea of a 'real prophet' is laughable. Either prophesy is verifiable, and able to be proven wrong, or it's deliberately vague and general, a la Nostradamus, and worthless. I'd love to hear about ANY prophet from ANY context who made specific, verifiable predictions, was proven correct, and didn't do so by simply spewing enough shit that some of it was bound to be correct. |
