I understand mandarin but not really what cantonese translations are. The one word I really don't get is 唔

Thanks a lot guys.

i think that's pronounced "mm." it's a negation like 不 so like 唔知 means "don't know"

wait, "mm" can be written? i always thought it was only spoken and that if you had to write, you had to use 不

edit - is it a 'new' word?

沒 is mou. i don't really know more than a few really common words of cantonese though haha

edit: wouldn't call it new since cantonese uses older words than modern mandarin. other 'older' dialects like taiwanese also use "mm" though i dunno how it's written

ah, sorry bout the edit lol, i wrote the wrong character

im just surprised cuz ive always been taught that when you speak, you can say like 'ngo mm hai hok saang' (i am not a student) but if you had to write, you needed to write 'ngo bu si hok saang' (我不是學生)

  rauk   United States. November 08 2009 08:14. Posts 24Profile
the few canto subs i've seen had 唔 so i just assumed they always used that ~\O_o/~

  dkpl   Canada. November 08 2009 08:18. Posts 15Profile
It's not 'new' but just only used for cantonese, so you're taught to not write this way, because people who speak only mandarin won't understand it. For people who speak only cantonese, and want to communicate to mandarin-only people, just speak how you're taught to write, they'll understand it.

"This morning at 8 you called, haha, even though we're apart we're still quite close/intimate.
You used a dead person's voice to say that I'm bad and that you don't need me, and then you said that you talked about me with some friends saying I was quite good, saying that you'd come back and marry me... haha

It was so funny, the first time we hung up you called back not 3 minutes later.. hehe

I would feel really happy, but quickly it would turn to sadness. Because I miss you, and don't know when you'll call again.

It turns out, I haven't called you for a month."

Might not be entirely accurate, haven't gone over it, but I think it's pretty much correct.

note: 死人 literally means dead person but 死人(insert noun) would be more like english ppl saying your god damn (insert noun) or your friggin (noun). Usually with no offensive intentions and denotes a close relationship.

My translation:

You called me around 8 this morning, haha even though we've been seperated we're still really sweet and close
You used that annoying voice* to tell me not to leave you... you also told your friends that I was really good, and that you were waiting for me to come back and marry you... haha...

It's really funny, the first time we hung up 3 minutes didn't pass before you called again to talk hehe

When we're talking I feel really happy**, but then soon I begin to feel sad again***
It's because I really miss you... not knowing when you'll call again...

It turns out... I haven't called you in half a month

*[死人聲 - in this context it directly means stupid, annoying and cheesy voice yet the true meaning of 死人聲 in this post tells the sender that the poster actually considers the voice to be adorable/cute as well]
**(happy in a sweet/intimate context)
***(the 'lu' in the orginal message is meant to give the preceeding sentence a tone of cute sadness)

------

Cute message, whos it for and whos it from lol?

also personally this sounds alot like some song or some narrative prelude to those stereotypical canto MVs about love...

In hong kong Cantonese is mainly spoken but for writing they use mandarin.
I think the only time written cantonese is ever used is in courts.
