Whenever something big happens to change the way I think about my life, I check my teeth. I know I’ve said it before, on a different blog, but for those who haven’t read it, it bears repeating. So when I say that at three o’clock this morning I found myself staring into my own mouth in the mirror, tapping my dentistry, I need you to know that it has little, if anything, to do with my teeth themselves.
I find myself in the same position as I was nearly two years ago, when my brother decided that he’d leave Ireland for a brighter hemisphere, moving to Australia. This time though, it’s Jane, who would hate if I wrongfully noted her as “my youngest sister” here, being the elder of twins, who has decided to give another continent a try.
Jane is, in profession if nothing else, the one of my siblings who has generally remained closest to me. The fact that we have fairly similar day-to-day work means that whenever there’s something that I simply must consult someone on, it doesn’t matter that there might be a houseful of people around me; my first instinct is to hit Skype and give her a call. That should go some way towards explaining why, even though she’s spent the past two years in Kerry, it doesn’t seem to have happened that I’ve felt too distant from her.
I suppose it’s a little ironic that, being the most distant geographically, Jane is the sibling with whom I speak most, but that’s life.
Now that I think about it, this whole post might just be a little premature, considering the fact that the poor girl hasn’t actually left yet. When I wrote a similar post about my brother leaving, it was literally the night that he left the country, after a small family get together to say a proper goodbye – something we won’t have for Jane for another week or two yet, not until the day before she goes, I imagine.
Still, today was the day when it really hit home that she’d be gone, and so it was that on the walk home I realised with a sudden, lurching sadness that I wouldn’t be in quite the same position I am now; even if all the change that happens is a time difference, it still puts her in foreign time.
Having realised that the time between now her actually leaving is fast thinning, it occurred to me that I felt very sad and, in a vague way, quietly out of touch. In the way as these little realisation can, it made me want to do something with myself, something lively. Somehow thinking it a good idea, I ran the rest of the way home, cutting directly across the fields and woods that lead to the house, enjoying the smell of freshly settled dew being kicked up, watching the long shadows of my legs from the old gas lamps.
There’s a simple joy to running at night in spring, especially this close to summer, when the nights are warm and clear, but still dark enough to be night, rather than the semi-permanent twilight of midsummer… and the squeak of a shoe against the wet grass on a dry night.
At the end of the night though, I still find myself, as always, staring at my teeth in the mirror, the dew gradually drying from my jeans and shoes, tapping first at one canine, then another, as though they might tell me something about myself I don’t already know, something that might cheer me up. Another two years older, teeth still big and white, but with another filling or two… holding up alright, I suppose, all things considered.

I'm not going to lie to you, I wasn't particularly interested in what you're talking about. But at the same time, it was written really well. For me to read through the whole thing without actually being interested in the topic has to say something for your writing.
Are you at all pursuing a writing career?
Edit: Just saw your little quote thing or w/e so ignore my question Last edit: 2010-04-11 11:58:34 |

I'm not really a write, I write news for a tech blog, but you know how these things go man; you write the stuff you don't enjoy for money, so you can write the stuff you do enjoy in your free time.
I'm glad you read it, and happy you liked it |

your 3rd paragraph is a bit too confusing for me
I had to read it several times before i understood exactly what i was supposed to. and i actually stopped reading there the first time because it was too much for my mind to comprehend.
apart from that i enjoyed the rest. Last edit: 2010-04-11 12:20:39 |

I clicked the link to make sure the movie was what I thought it was (and it was) but the real surprise was that "teeth in her vagina" was a link. Thats right, wikipedia has a page for vagina teeth, finally proving it is possible for an encyclopedia to be too complete.
My apologies for derailing thread ^^ |

Wow, sorry to have missed that one, no, his name is Seán. Seems a lot of Irish guys end up trying their luck in Australia though. He ended up working on a watermelon farm, sounded like he had fun there. |

I tried to dig up the older blog post where I first thought about the teeth thing and couldn't find it except on my really old blogspot blog from ages ago. I thought I had posted it here, but I can't seem to find it.
Anyway, I know it's not normally cool to link to external blogs, but I didn't want to add it as a new post and shit up the blogs here, so for anyone who wants it, here it is Last edit: 2010-04-13 08:08:07 |
