I figured I would do a blog on an interesting experience I had today. I would do some flashy intro or something, but I guess saying that I'm not doing a flashy intro is a flashy intro in itself so.....whatever let's get into the story.
So a week or two ago, my coworkers and I decided to go to a trip to a local (well 2 hour drive lol) water park called Blue Bayou. This is kind of weird in itself because it is a high-school boy (me), four pretty college girls (them), and one of the girl's boyfriend. But whatever. Despite our different backgrounds, we were all really good friends.
Here is a little relevant background: I am and was always scared of roller-coasters and rides with big drops and sickening turns. The fear of a ride's drop is because I'm a pussy, but the turns and stuff actually make me kind of sick.
Okay, so unfortunately the first slide we do is the "Mad Moccasin." It is a stereotypical ride that I would not like. Turns...so many turns, curves, twists, ect. But it is the first ride, I'm not gonna pussy out. I did express how scared I was going on the ride though. (Well I get scared for every ride even though I know it won't be bad.)
I knew of the "Mad Moccasin" since I was a little kid. When I was in about 5th or 6th grade, I went to Blue Bayou, and I saw the "Mad Moccasin." I automatically knew I was not going to like that ride as a kid...especially because it shakes. I saw it shaking from far away when I was a little kid.
Well standing in line was even scarier, no matter how old I was. Walking up the stairs to get to the top of the slide, you would see the whole foundation of the slide shake every minute. And I was already nervous X_X.
So after a while of being nervous and waiting in line with my coworkers, it was my turn to slide down. I was the last one of our group to go. As I'm going down, I just close my eyes because of the random dark tunnels you go through and the slide was stupidly fast and sickening. So I'm twisting, turning, and doing a bunch of other stuff that made my stomach hurt, I suddenly feel myself going "up." WTF. The slide doesn't go up. Whatever, the ride should be over soon, so as long as I keep my eyes shut, I should be fine.
I feel fresh air (the tunnels during the ride have a distinct atmosphere to them), and I think for a second, "Finally, this is over." Well I get launched into a pool at the end of the slide...and I can't find the surface. Well remember how I thought I was going up? I thought up was down and down was up. So even though I should've been fine, I start swimming down. This is a problem, and I start panicking and just keep trying to swim to what I think is "up." Well now I can't fucking breathe, and I'm drowning. Cool. Actually...not cool. I can't even make that sarcastic because I was fucking about to die. Thankfully, someone (lifeguard) picks me up, and I get my head out of the water after another set of hands lift my head up. I cough out a bunch of water from my lungs. They ask me if I was okay, and I give a thumbs up. I stand up...disorientated...and say, "Dude, I almost fucking died."
For the rest of the day, we just joked about how I almost fucking died, and I rode every ride (but one because just watching it was making me sick). It was fun. The End.
Bonus: Spectator's Point of View of my Drowning: Oh, here is my friends' story of me drowning. They saw I was launched out, but didn't see me surface for a while. They thought I was just swimming to the surface underwater, but obviously that wasn't the case. Apparently, I stuck my head out for a second to gasp for air, but I went back down. (I don't remember this) Then the lifeguard, who was pretty small, tried to lift me up, but he is small and I am bulky. Not fat though. Well he tried to pick up, but my head was still underwater, so a coworker's boyfriend came lift my head up...so I can live, ya know.
And my coworkers keep joking about no one telling my mom. My mom co-owns the Quiznos restaurant, and my mom is very paranoid about my good health. She was even skeptical about me going >_>. Well, if she was to find out that I almost drowned...lol she'd kill my coworkers and probably me too.

WHOA O__O I'm glad you're okay!!
A few questions, though: 1) Does your mom co-own the entire Quiznos restaurant chain?! 2) You're coworkers with college students?! 3) What is your line of work?! |

1) No, it is a franchise, and we only own a single store. Pretty good though because it is almost like a "family restaurant" (other owners are cousins).
2) Ya, they're college students who live somewhat close to the college, but the restaurant is really close to their home. They (well who doesn't) need the money for college and stuff, and getting a really good part time job with good hours and stuff is incredibly rare. Everyone gets almost 40 hours/week if they want, and the staff is really fucking cool. (except for this one guy)
3) Typical Quiznos stuff. Make sandwiches and shit.

Nah, that is only for immediate family...like me. harharhar. I actually ate almost only Quiznos for a month because my mom was too busy to cook. I got sick of it and quit eating any Quiznos products for like 3 months. lolLast edit: 2011-07-26 11:50:08 |

When you almost drowned, did it feel peaceful when your body was about to give up? One of my health teacher said survivors felt at peace when they were about to die from drowning.

I suppose I wasn't deep enough in the drowning stage to do that. I would only imagine that to happen about a few seconds from certain death. I can't compare it to something. Stuck, confused, and suffering- that's what I was feeling.

Haha, the quoted part is just like myself.
I remember going to Disney in Florida, and every one of my friends was like LETS GO ON THE ROCK'N'ROLLERCOASTER...I mean, it was inside a building, how bad could this "coaster" be?
Well I found out I'm fucking stupid and didn't make the connection that you can dig a big hole in the ground and stick a crazy fucking roller coaster in it. Holy shit standing in line when I saw the powered launch shoot that coaster out of the station at like 80mph I was practically shitting myself.
Holy crap that coaster was nuts, and probably my favorite ride of the park, lol.
Glad you didn't drown, anyways. :D

Reminds me of Revenge of the Mummy in Unviversal Studios, although it wasn't that bad. The Jurassic part ride was fucking silly though. 90% of the ride is basically doing nothing until the last drop which is the most intense drop ever. If you sit in the first row of seats, you are actually not touching the seat. If the bar would become lose, you would legitimately fly off and die. |

Speaking of roller coasters, I went on my first one in about a decade just this weekend. It was at Canada's Wonderland. Of course my friends bring me to the most aggressive one in the park at open. Fuck. But fun.

I have an excellent picture from the Jurassic Park ride of me looking like I was shaving or reading a book and not plummeting 60 feet down a water plume.
I guess growing up next to amusement parks and the ocean kinda take the fun out of drowning. Rip tides lost their appeal by thirteen and my favorite album is from our broken surfboards during a hurricane in 2002.
Sorry you almost drowned. There is a very palpable fear of the unknown when you're in water, even if you practically live in it half the year like me. I know your experience differs from any of mine but I bet I know at least a little about how that feels.

The feeling of almost drowning is horrible! I used to be (and still am, to a degree) an avid bodyboarder and there has been a few times when I've come close to drowning. ie its been a day of huge swell, I've paddled my heart out trying to get past the break and I decide to go for a big wave as soon as i get out the back. This of course means im out of breath and those few times ive come down the face of the wave at an awkward angle which means insta-stack! Being out of breath and being thrown about and sucked under by the wave is fucking scary.
tl;dr - dont catch big waves if you're out of breath. |

I'm from a town called Cut Off which is about an hour or so away from New Orleans. It is further south. Actually further south than the people on Swamp People lol.
And even though I live right near a water and a beach, Grand Isle beaches aren't exactly the prettiest (especially with the oil spill lol)Last edit: 2011-07-27 04:40:54 |
