If you want to try some of the best sushi in NYC, I'd go to Sasbune (omakase), it's expensive, but not Masa level expensive. I remember this place having a sign outside that said: "no california rolls, no spicy tuna rolls" or something to that effect. This is a sushi snob type of place.
For a place that is a little cheaper and has a better atmosphere (doesn't take reservations though), I'd recommend Blue Ribbon sushi. I'd get omakase here too (the one that comes with the lobster sashimi platter) |

| If you want to wow her with atmosphere, I'd maybe recommend Morimoto (sushi / asian fusion) or on the same street is Buddakan (asian fusion). Buddakan definitely has that wow factor, especially if you make reservations for a table on the bottom floor near the communal table area. Last edit: 2011-09-07 06:08:47 |

Wow, took a look at the pictures for both of those places and they do look fancy. I know she likes sushi but I'm leaning towards Buddakan for a change of pace. Both look like great places for a date though, tough choice.
Thanks for the tip! |

So a follow up to how it all worked out:
I actually ended up going with Morimoto's because after looking at the menu for Buddakan I was worried my girlfriend wouldn't have enough choices due to her crazy allergies. She can't have wheat/gluten, dairy, and shellfish which rules out ALOT of stuff unfortunately. The safe bet always being sushi for her.
She actually didn't like the place as she felt it was "too pricey" and she felt uncomfortable with the atmosphere being so upclass. We're used to eating at chain restaurants like the Olive Garden for occasions so this place was actually daunting for her. I had no idea she felt that way but it was still an experience that I enjoyed. She said the sashimi she got was good but not enough to warrant the price, she liked the toro tartare a lot, I liked the black cod, and we both were really really not pleased with the wasabi sorbet lol. Spicy sorbet is just weird to me. XD
So while my attempt to wow her with an upscale place sort of backfired it was still a good experience. I've never eaten at a $$$$ yelp rated place and it's definitely a different kind of service and atmosphere.
Big thanks to TheMango for the suggestions, was a huge help!
Oh yeah, and the rest of the night turned out really well. She really liked Zarkana at Radio City Music Hall and I picked out Radiance Tea House for lunch prior to the show and dinner and she was very happy with that place, I'd recommend it.Last edit: 2011-09-30 06:01:27 |

Radiance Tea House is pretty good, bunch of us from TL met there a while back after dinner at Hagi Sake Bar (might want to check out this place as well)
If Morimoto atmosphere wasnt to her liking, Blue Ribbon Sushi is a lot more down to earth and cozy (miso butter sauce <3). Also on the same street is Blue Ribbon Brassiere which is pretty good as well (not sushi, but same owners) |

Cool, I'll have to look into that. She much preferred the environment of Hatsuhana, cozy I suppose, so that might be a better fit. |
