I've never owned a car before but I have been driving on and off for the last 10 years or so. I had no need to own a car previously as I had been taking mass transportation instead. My newest job sort of demands a car though due to location so I'm trying to figure things out. My parents are going to help me out with getting a car and they seem pretty set on a new 2012 Nissan Altima. I don't really know anything about cars so I have no idea if this is good or not. Seems like a nice car from what I can tell.

So first off I'm curious what you guys think of the 2012 Altima and second if you guys have any advice for a first time car owner.

First time car owners: Used cars that are cheap. Should only really get a good car when you are only going to drive it once or twice a week, not 5 times a day.

New cars are the biggest rip off of the century. The second you drive it off the lot, it loses 15% value instantly. I was a mechanic for 5 years in college and still work on my own cars and I can tell you, save a FORTUNE by buying a car with 5,000 miles on it. Not only is the engine barely even broken in at that point, the warranty will still be intact as well as you will avoid paying the OBSCENE markup on a brand new vehicle. Altimas are decent but they have zero personality, get something you enjoy driving; even if its less practical. People that love their car ALWAYS take better care of it.

I don't know your financial situation, but here are my thoughts.

Cars and Houses are what break the bank for 99% of the population. Really consider your options and your priorities. I drive a somewhat non-inexpensive car, but I can comfortably afford it and I value my safety above anything and everything else in a vehicle.

Try doing some research on consumer reports for equivalent class vehicles. Consider Used vs New. See if any of your friends are looking to get rid of their old ride. See if your parents would sell you theirs, so that they may buy a new vehicle for themselves.

Here are the two factors that I would focus on:
1) Safety
2) Cost

If you really want a nicer, newer car, try to find last year's model. Otherwise just look for something in good shape that will get you there without breaking down, and don't waste money on something with a ridiculously low return value.

@Mr. Nefarious: My parent's are helping me out with the car and would prefer to get a new one since they said they got a really good deal on this one, being only $2k or so more than a used one. I consider myself a very very frugal person so if it were up to me I would have bought used as well. Also, what you say about "personality" doesn't really apply to me. I just need something to get me to and from work, I don't care about having a fancy car. That said, I will take care of this car to the absolute best of my abilities. I expect to be with this car for a long time.

@thedeadhaji: I really wanted to stick with mass transit but it's 1 hour 15 minutes by train and 1 hour 30 minutes by bus unfortunately. By car it's 15 minutes. I planned on trying to buy one of my parent's cars but my siblings need them.

I'll try to do more research on my own though, thanks. For me, safety, reliability, and cost efficiency are my main goals with this car.

Well by all means buy a car for sure. That lost time more than makes up for the money.

Here's some math
http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/10/06/the-true-cost-of-commuting/

Also, that "$2k more than a used one" sounds very suspicious to me at first glance.

I'm thinking whether I can even recreate this scenario in my mind or not. Unless your bus goes in circles? Breaks daily? I don't know. For me bus is faster because it can use an HOV lane. Getting to Boston in the morning is ridiculous.

It takes a fairly roundabout route and it makes 20 stops, requires a transfer, then requires 50 more stops. The train literally makes a "V" shape and requires a transfer. My place of work is only 10 miles away.

I would suggest getting an 2011 car within the next 2 months.. Dealership prices begin to drop and salesmen are more willing to negotiate when it comes close to the end of the year/month because they want to make their sales goals.

The altima is a good economic car, can't really go wrong with it. I do agree that you should get a car that you like/love because you will enjoy it taking care of it that much more. If you're not really a car person then just go for the best economic car you can get for the best price like the honda civic, toyota corolla or the nissan altima.

I haven't been following car reviews and pricing too closely since I bought mine a couple years ago, but if you're looking for a sedan, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima are all decent options. (I would rank the Altima in last out of the 3, but it's still decent.) I also really like the current Hyundai Sonata and I think it might also be cheaper.

Any of these options are good choices imo!

Personally I think if it's the first car that will be yours then you should go used. Granted, you have been driving for longer than I had when I got my own car (my first was used) but I still suggest against a new car the first time.

However, a nissan altima is a very reasonable car in general.
Thanks Epoxide for all your help. Without you I never would have figured out how to install that boost gauge into my car.

My brother has an Altima (not sure what year, but i think 05 or 06) that he bought used and although I don't know about price, it is a very nice car. It's the best quality car my family owns (and we own 6 cars -- big family) and it runs like a charm. I bet you would like it.

I'll chime in that I bought my first car (Jeep wrangler) 4 years ago and I still owe 7K on the fucker, if I could go back I'd buy the cheapest car from some trusted source that I could find in good condition. If your first car is new or over 10K you know you done screwed the pooch...unless you have rich parents or rob a bank. Cheap house/car=nice start into adulthood, it may seem shitty at first but after a few months your like oh my god my payments are low as hell, I can actually have money to save for my future (i.e. have a good one not loaded with debt).

I bought a Nissan Juke SL AWD earlier this year, and absolutely love it. While at the dealership I talked with several owners and buyers of the Altima, all of which gave it high praise.

If I was shopping for a fair priced majorly reliable car however, I would go with the Toyota Camry, it is a bit boring, but solid as hell.
