Hey, I'm a master protoss in sc2, and want to try something new, so I decided to try my hand at BW terran. I feel that this game will force me to improve my mechanics, and could be a fun diversion while i wait to upgrade my computer.
What are some good resources for players COMPLETELY new to BW (just played first game, took me 3 minutes to realise that you have to tell SCVs to mine, if you want to appreciate my noobishness). So basic builds, or even a guide that tells me what key differences I need to note having come off the sequel.
Additionally, is it normal that I can't see my hotkeys? Can you customise hotkeys, as having to hit M for marines feels awkward after having had the luxury of setting my own in sc2. What is the limit for amount of units on one hotkey?
This game looks tough as balls, but I'm really keen to try my hand at it.
Thanks!
EDIT x2 fixed the problem

Liquipedia's BW section should still help you. And no you can't customize hotkeys.
-12 units to a hotkey or control group in general.
Really, it's just going to be trial and error I would think, I don't believe there are any guides of "You play SC2, this is what's different in BW"
Also, forgot to link this thread - http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=272674

- You cannot customize hotkeys. - You cannot see your hotkeys like you can on sc2 - Max 12 units per hotkey, 1 per building unless i'm having a brain fart - Liquipedia's BW section if you want to read about general builds ect..

you only option would be to use a registry modifyer like sharpkeys to change how your keys respond in windows (what i did before cusom hotkeys in sc2). Otherwise you gotta deal with it. I did the same (master zerg trying bw out) and its pretty brutal getting used to the whole keyboard...
gotta do whatcha gotta do though, not complaining :S
Edit: almost forgot 1 building per hotkey is also a bitch. Thank god i used camera hotkeys before cause they are soooo much more important, so get used to it. Its a much more conscious effort but not horrible once your used to it

You can't change the hotkeys (i.e. m for marine will stay that way).
And the limit is 12 per hotkey
And if you want to know what you hotkeys just double click 11 22 33 and you can see
Great resource is the liquipedia... it's pretty good (the BW-version).

nice to see some sc2 players try bw but you need balls of steel if not you will get frustrated by getting owned like a noob all the time cause master in sc2 means nothing in bw also terran is the hardest race to learn for beginners, try to play protoss first and switch to terran later gl hf

any particular reason you want to switch to terran? while its true terran is a bit more control intensive, protoss in bw are so awesome

Agreed, as a SC2 Protoss I have way more fun with BW Protoss because of one thing

Good luck, during a beta break of sc2, I played bw and it was very annoying (and hard) because of the control groups and the hotkeys. Pathfinding wasn't a problem since I played wc3 a ton tho.

Some good resources are minerals and gas - sorry, had to be done Good luck in discovering the game. If you approach its difficulties as challenges, you're going to have a good time! BW is like the hardest girl to get - if you happen to tame it at least a little, it will deliver.

If you stay as Terran or switch to Protoss, remember to use your thumb alot for hotkeys on the right side of the keyboard. Hitting M for marines, O for siege and P for probes etc feels very nice and quick when you get the hang of it.

You also use your thumb in giving a thumbs up, which you get for this post.
I played BW with my keyboard angled a bit, and used my ring finger on 1a, middle 2 ring a, so on. Really once you get a hang of the different hotkeys and smaller control groups, you'll be on the track to actually learning the game and improving those mechanics.
Don't forget to use your camera hotkeys as well for production....if you're terran you can hotkey a single barracks to 4 and tap 44 to focus your view to your barracks (which you hopefully crammed together in one spot)
+ Show Spoiler [random TvP tip of the day!] + Build a supply depot as close as you can to your barracks horizontally
[BARRACK][SD] -or- [SD][BARRACK]
Like that...marines can run through the gap between the buildings but zealots can't...mariners shoot at zealot and he runs around to try and get you. might help you in a zealot aggression scenario :p

read the other 2 threads that were started in the same topic

While I never played protoss I sorta disliked toss in bw, but compared to sc2 bw protoss is best race ever created in a game haha, if you are toss in sc2 you will enjoy toss in BW more. They were much better designed in BW

note that supply depots can NOT be burrowed and that protoss warp gates are NOT possible. Note that this game is more balanced than SC2 in many people's opinions and it also takes a ton of skill to learn and even play. The only way I learned how to play BW was by watching my brother play when I was little and then reading up on it at TL before I was old enough for my parents to buy me the game. No matter what never give up, you WILL enjoy it. First play the campaign to get a feel for everything. The storyline is very fun and interesting and incredibly different from SCII's.
For fun UMS(non-melee) maps to play there is staredit.net. For mostly unknown melee maps in development and finished (All very good) look to broodwarmaps.net for help. Really good site with map makers that put in their own personality into their maps. Each map is different and quite a few are iCCup/Korean tournament-level material. Some members here make maps there. There is also a kulass ravine brood war version there that is pretty fun to play. It also demonstrates the difference in playing Kulass on SCII and on BW.
Remember to watch for dum unit-pathing. Really dum unit-pathing. Also watch for drops and make sure to expand. Edit: 2012th post. I will now be posting once a year while lurking at TL.net. Have a great year guys! Pm me if you need me. Ciao!
