A summary of my "RSI" pain and recovery

I've noticed a large number of topics about RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) / Carpal Tunnel / wrist pain / etc. I thought I'd share my story about my RSI diagnosis, how it changed my life, and my (not yet complete) recovery, in the hope that maybe others can identify and gain something from it.

Disclaimer: This was originally posted somewhere besides TL so a few sentences may seem out of place (obviously everyone here knows what Starcraft is for example). I apologize if the formatting gets screwed up from copying over; I'll try my best to correct it.

Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if I missed it, but I had to google and search for what TMS was. Very interesting stuff.
It is vanity to love what passes quickly and not to look ahead where eternal joy abides.

Christ, this sounds like me. I read through Sarno's explanation and few other articles on TMS and I can relate to just about everything it describes, and your situation in particular. I was just under the impression I was in really bad shape and spend way too much to time on the computer. I still believe this is mostly true, but it's good to know about this stuff if my other treatments don't work out.

Thanks for the information and good luck to you.

@mordek: That's true, I only hinted at the parts that were relevant to me -- partly because I was originally writing this for a TMS forum! In any case, it has a wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tension_myositis_syndrome (see the theory section). In a nutshell, the theory is that the mind causes pain to distract the person from various repressed feelings (Sarno focuses on repressed rage/anger in particular, though I have seen other people definite it much more broadly). This is in contrast to pain being some kind of physical abnormality.

@seth: I'm not convinced that I do! That was just the diagnosis that I got from multiple doctors. This alternate theory has given me far more relief than anything any of the doctors suggested (which provided next to no relief). In fact, I am not convinced that RSI is a real thing at all (I know that Sarno doesn't think so). Seeing the number of RSI topics I've seen on teamliquid in the past year, I thought I'd share my story in the hope that maybe someone else can also benefit as I have.

@fire_brand: How long have you been in pain? From what I understand, most real injuries will heal on their own in at most a month's time. If you're experiencing things like I did (such as pain mysteriously moving to different areas), it may be worthy of consideration. Feel free to PM me anytime!

Hey LordOfDabu. I just posted something in reply to Klazart, an old caster suffering from RSI. I'll repost it here.

Thanks for the memories Klazart. I was part of the Authonomy army.

By the way, RSI is an umbrella term for any strain due to repetition. Perhaps you have tendinosis, like me. South Park got it wrong in that WoW episode. Carpal tunnel = numbness and tingling due to a pinched nerve. Cartman receiving Bengay is indicative of inflammation of the tendons, and not carpal tunnel tingling.

"A predominance of pain rather than numbness is unlikely to be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome no matter what the result of electrophysiological testing."

CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME : A REVIEW Gadhave S. V.1*, Moon R.S., Kshirsagar R.V. 1Department of pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, SRTM University Nanded-431606, Maharashtra.

http://www.ijprd.com/CARPEL%20TUNNEL%20SYNDROME%20_%20A%20REVIEW.pdf

“When pain is the primary symptom, carpal tunnel syndrome is unlikely to be the source of the symptoms.”

The Value Added by Electrodiagnostic Testing in the Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19047703

There's even a book called "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!: RSI Theory and Therapy for Computer Professionals"
http://www.amazon.com/Its-Carpal-Tunnel-Syndrome-Professionals/dp/0965510999

Tendinitis is the initial inflammation of the tendons, and tendinosis is the failed healing, and structural change of the tendons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tendinosis

Here are 2 open-access articles on tendinosis.

Deciphering the pathogenesis of tendinopathy: a three-stages process

http://www.smarttjournal.com/content/2/1/30

Pathogenesis of tendinopathies: inflammation or degeneration?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2714139/?tool=pubmed

Race horses are susceptible to tendinitis and tendinosis, as they’re massive creatures on twig-like legs, being pushed hard. They can’t race anymore if they’re tendinosis is bad, just like you can’t game anymore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowed_tendon

Race horses are worth a lot, so stem cell treatments have been developed to save them.

Open-access article on stem cell therapy and tissue engineering in equine medicine :

Current and future regenerative medicine — Principles, concepts, and therapeutic use of stem cell therapy and tissue engineering in equine medicine

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2629419/

They’ve worked well on horses, and I believe human trials begin this year. They’re testing it on Achilles tendinosis, I believe:

UK Stem Cell Company Cures Race Horse Tendons, Humans Next
http://singularityhub.com/2011/03/10/uk-stem-cell-company-cures-race-horse-tendons-humans-next/

Stem-Cell Therapy Works Wonders for Race Horses; Are Human Treatments Next?
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-05/stem-cell-therapy-humans-horse-tested-vet-approved

I wish we could petition them to get on the hand and arm area tendons quickly though. I can barely do anything with my hands =(.

This could be a future support group:,
http://www.reddit.com/r/RSI/
But it’s new, and has no regulars like an established support group like Sorehand, but Sorehand uses a mailing list format.

Good luck, and check out Autohotkey for scripting, and Vocola for voice scripting to save your hands. I’ll make a tutorial when I can.

I hope those researchers are successful.

Sorry LordOfDabu, but I have to conserve my keyboard presses right now.
spent presses on above post
excuse grammar for below

2007
Bad back = needed a stiff chair = couldn’t adjust height. Regular desk with no keyboard tray = keyboard was relatively higher. Never had a problem with gaming my entire life, but I never knew that excessive wrist flexion could accelerate the appearance of the problem.

"most real injuries will heal on their own in at most a month's time"
tendinitis, not tendinosis
tendinosis = failed healing = good-bye prize-winning race horse worth more than my house

"Interestingly enough, I've noticed a very high correlation of pain and stress"
"mind causes pain"
once i found out last year that my tendinosis would stop me from working full-time in life, dropped from university, and got so weak from stress that i could barely cut an egg
found out that anxiety causes muscle tension
got tendinitis again, just like in 2007, due to stress and overdoing excercises
this stacks on top of permanent tendinosis of 2008 due to not letting myself heal from initial tendinitis of 2007

"If you're experiencing things like I did (such as pain mysteriously moving to different areas)"
yep. got that. noticeable in my elbow.
not sure if i have Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, or Golfer's elbow, or medial epicondylitis, an inflammatory condition of the medial epicondyle of the elbow.
tendinosis pain in elbow tendons somewhat changes location for me

gamer's thumb = De Quervain's tenosynovitis
got that too in thumb tendons

basketball players get jumper's knee, known as patellar tendinitis, from excessive, repetitive jumping
runners get achilles tendinitis from repetition + bad ergonomics (got mine from flat feet and overpronation)

it's all about the overuse of tendons, not carpal tunnel

chronic tendinitis = tendinosis

Time to abandon the “tendinitis” myth
Painful, overuse tendon conditions have a non-inflammatory pathology
http://www.bmj.com/content/324/7338/626.full

ok ow gotta stop.. way past daily allocation
might be back to talk once I learn windows speech/voice recognition
pm me some day
can't respond now for months
need tendinitis to go away

good luck
