First, a little about myself. I am 17 years old, and live in Cleveland, OH. I joined vVv Gaming about a year ago as a community member in silver league. From there, I grew to become a top level zerg through hard work and the right guidance from mentors (specifically vVvTitan). It may come as a surprise that I started in much the same skill level as an everyday player, with SC2 being my 1'st RTS.
@ MLG, Flashes are bright
Eventually, I got to the point where I was facing top level players, made GM, and was winning more than losing versus the pros. It is here that I made plans to attend MLG Columbus. Going in, all I had was a water bottle, mouse, keyboard, headphones, and $100 pocket money. I was the 222 seed, one of the lowest in the tournament. Here's how it went for me:
WR1: 2-0 JoshFreeman WR2: 2-1 StoicRegret WR3: 2-1 EGMachine WR4: 2-0 Spades WR5: 1-2 VileDdoro LR7: 0-2 MillStephano (reps attatched below)
Needless to say, I turned quiet a few heads. When I was preparing to play Stephano in front of a crowd of about 30 people crammed in around us, I received 2 pieces of advice from vVv's owner, Jerry (Jerry tends to be "outspoken" and "brutally honest").
1) It doesn't matter how good your opponent is yesterday, or tomorrow. All that matters is how well each of you play NOW. 2) Focus on the basics. Inject, scout, creep spread, ect. Remember that every player will make mistakes. Think of the game as how well you exploit your opponent's mistakes.
*Stephano Thinking Face*
I would encourage every one of you to remember those 2 things. Don't cramp under stress, and don't worry about who you're facing. Each game is different, a new chance to take advantage of your opponent's mistakes. I went in knowing that I had the capability to do very well, and achieved more than I had hoped. Who knows, every loss was very close and only based off a few mistakes. A win here or there in place of a loss and I could have seen pools (or not.. coLHeart is pretty good :D )
Also a few extra tips: -BRING WATER BOTTLE. Unless you want to drink only DrPepper, water's your option -Make sure your gear works on MLG computers. I had the Steelseries 7G, which doesn't work on MLG computers (Had to use managers) -Take a minute after each game in a series. Politely ask the referee just to give you a minute to think about the last game, then focus completely on the game ahead.
We had a crowd
I have taped up cheap headset. Switching to steelseries headset this week
That's it, a brief talk about my games vs Stephano. Here are the mistakes that I have identified in each game (Reps attached below, very close games and would encourage a fast watch for ZvZ) :
I apologize, SC2replayed is down
1: (http://www.gamereplays.org/starcraft2/replays.php?game=33&show=details&id=259418)
-Only single evolution chamber, meant for 2 -Lost mutas to queens outside of Steph's third -Near end of game, ran drones from third without returning
2: (http://www.gamereplays.org/starcraft2/replays.php?game=33&show=details&id=259419)
-Forgot to rebuild roach warren after he sniped in 1'st all in -Better muta harass at the third (opening at bottom)
Thanks for the read!

edit: as good as the read was i think this belong most in blog section

wow that's impressive. this is EXACTLY what NA needs; new blood in the scene through hard work and dedication. Gz on your run ^^

Awesome man, what a cool experience.
Best of luck in the future, you seem like you have a good attitude and know how to have fun - Don't change!

GJ glon, glad t osee you've been really improving and doing well! Sadly I'm still not getting any better, but meh. congrats bro!

impressive, I know you'll make your breakout performance soon :> Tbh the crowd was all around Stephano in that picture. Just a couple quick questions
1.) Did the fact that Stephano had such a huge crowd around him effects you at all mentally? 2.)How tiring does it get pumping through so many games in front of a live audience? 3.)What was your goal walking into MLG?
|
Wished Titan was still playing a ton ;~; I miss his cuteness so much.
Gl to vVv in the future, they've definitely still got some real talent. Unfortunate run for Daisuki, but he's definitely going under the radar right now with how good he actually is haha. To the above, the spectators are not allowed to come into the gaming area, only teammates and coaches can watch from where Glon is sitting, which you actually see often in later rounds. + Show Spoiler +Although, yeah, they did probably want to see stephano play.

Good job getting as far as you did.The write-up was a nice read, I hope to see you getting even farther next time.

Cool story. It' nice to see talent come from the bottom up - it helps us causal gamers dream and think, "It could be me..." Good luck in the future!

@Noctern 1. I just focussed. Nothing but the moniter in front me mattered 2. It gets tiring, especially when you have a new series every hour. Just fight through it, endurance 3. I didn't really have a goal. Basically just wanted to get as far as possible and impress everyone -- most importantly myself.
Thanks guys! Damn... "blogs" doesn't get nearly the publicity, but maybe eventually *sigh*

We'll have to get pictures with some TL guys next event so they let you put it on the main page.

That's pretty awesome man, nice job.

You vVv guys definitely made an appearance; y'all were everywhere! And I think I watched some of your first game against Stephano. Sounds like you had an awesome MLG experience.

congrats! Also just curious, why does the SteelSeries 7g not work on mlg computers?
|
Good stuff Glon, you rock.

It connects via PS2, all MLG computers use USB only.

I was one of the people watching you vs. Stephano live. I was really impressed with how well you played, even though 99% of the spectators thought you were going to get stomped. It's not often that relative unknowns (no offense) from the NA server put up a fight against Stephano, but the games were really close at a few points. The ling run-by during the Antiga game was great.
One thing though, for the vVv members in the crowd: the constant cheering got kind of annoying haha. I think Stephano turned around and said something because it was getting on his nerves (for good reason tbh). It's great to support a teammate and be enthusiastic, but during the games, let the players focus.
Anyways, really liked watching you play and I hope you do well.
